Yeah, they are Republics and Constitutional Monarchies in much the same way that the (former) USSR and (current) PRC are actual Republics.

Any one of those countries that allows proportional representation is closer to a democracy than anything in North America.

So, Austria, Finland, Croatia, Germany, Greece and so forth. Proportional representation is why the Weimar ‘Republic’ fell.

Would they themselves choose to live in a dictatorship, even one that didn’t rely on terror to maintain its power?

Yes they would. Many have before.

Oh, wait a second, Europe is chock full of Democracies.

No it isn’t. Name one.

Europe, are you paying attention? Israel? CENTCOM? Obama?

The acceptance dictators is called “realism” or realpolitik, and Obama has bought back into it; it’s Scowcroftian.

9/11 proved it was a bad and failed policy.

And amoral at best.

How did 9/11 prove that realpolitik was a bad policy? Besides which acceptance, really coddling, of the House of Saud has only increased in the years since.

The democracies of the world should shun oppression and dictatorship if they value freedom at all. Would they themselves choose to live in a dictatorship, even one that didn’t rely on terror to maintain its power?

The powerbrokers in our Democracy and others recognize that Dictatorships are only harmful to the Dictated.

Now, if you are among the Party in Power… no such problem. So, yeah, I’ll say that they would prefer to live in a Dictatorship – one where their man is the Dictator, at least.

Obama like it because he’s a postmodern leftist. Postmodern leftists have rejected the universalist humanism of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt and JFK. Instead, postmodernists are cultural reltivists who think one culture has no business interfering with any other.

Postmodernists wouldn’t have tried to stop the slave trade, or even have sent Freedom Riders to the deep South in the 1960′s.

Yeah, I remember that, specifically because it was the only condemnation of Hamas to come out of a Euroweenie’s mouth.

The standing army part is going a little too far–but, then Madison lived in a special time and place in history when a civilian militia was sufficient to prevent conquest and enslavement. Basically, what was sufficient and available for personal protection was also largely sufficient for national defense. Not particularly true earlier in history, and definitely not true now.

Are you sure about that? Most Chinese students I know here in Ireland won’t discuss Tibet with anyone for fear their government will find out about it. I’d be very sceptical that any some would publicly applaud a demonstration against the Chinese President. Maybe they never intend on going back to China.

The protestor screamed: “This is a scandal.”
