With the Left it’s always a war of attrition. If we don’t let them wear us down, I think there will be a tipping point.

Arrogance give politicians deaf ears and that leads to blunders and those blunders build up. The wagyu steak moment and the thermostat for orchids may be harbingers of things to come. Some incident or phrase may come that will kind of crystallize in the public mind all of the problems with Obama.

Why don’t you just admit that choosing tax cheats and lobbyists doesn’t exactly reflect well on the guy who was supposed to unite the nation with new and honest character.

Wasn’t there someone while defending the Clinton administration saying something along the lines of ‘if you are going to demand saintly purity, then no one could ever serve in government.’ Who said it and when? Someone in the media, or a politician? As I remember, that argument didn’t hold up well.

There have always been crooks in Washington… but now they don’t even try to hide it anymore… and somehow STILL get elected and re-elected.

Daschle is Indefensible

No need to fumble for words that sum up the stew of hypocrisy, arrogance and insiderism that is the unfolding saga of Tom Daschle. This is the audacity of audacity.

Daschle, the former Senate Democratic leader turned multimillionaire power broker, is defending his nomination to become secretary of health and human services despite having failed to pay all his taxes, despite having failed to tell President Barack Obama’s transition team about his six-figure nonpayment before his appointment was announced, and despite having raked in about a quarter of a million dollars in fees for giving his insider insight to health insurers and others that the department he wishes to run happens to regulate.

When Vice President Joe Biden said during the presidential campaign that it is a patriotic duty to pay taxes, I agreed. So did most of us who believe in the ability of government to better Americans’ lives. But we also believe this responsibility is to be born by plumbers and power brokers alike.

If Daschle and the Senate Democrats still believe this, they have their own duty: It is to end this sorry spectacle now.

BigWyo on February 2, 2009 at 11:56 PM

Great article from the WSJ:

Driving Mr. Daschle: Tax avoidance and Democratic Party standards.

This one is going to be fascinating to watch, less for what it says about Mr. Daschle than what it will reveal about Democratic standards. Every Republican in America knows that if Mr. Daschle were a Reagan or Bush nominee he’d now be headed back to private life faster than you can say John Tower. That’s the way Democrats have treated GOP nominees who were accused of far lesser transgressions than Mr. Daschle’s tax, er, avoidance. The question is whether Democrats are going to treat Mr. Daschle according to the standard that Mr. Daschle set when he was running the Senate.

The WSJ goes on to remember:

Mr. Daschle’s Senate Democrats led the campaign against “Benedict Arnold corporations” that earn too much income overseas.

Then there was the assault on legal tax shelters, led in the Daschle Senate by Democrat Carl Levin.

INC on February 3, 2009 at 12:00 AM

The WSJ also mentions Eugene Scalia. Bush nominated him for Labor Dept. attorney.

More info on that from Kate O’Beirne:

“I don’t believe he has the 60 votes that are required,” Daschle announced before labeling the 38-year-old lawyer a “very controversial nominee.” To bolster this assertion, Daschle lied about the nominee’s record, claiming that Scalia refused to commit to enforcing all relevant laws.

Back to the WSJ:

They also mention Miguel Estrada:

He [Daschle] also filibustered Miguel Estrada, a judicial nominee of wide renown, on the trivial grounds that the Bush Administration wouldn’t release internal memos when Mr. Estrada had worked as a Justice Department staff lawyer.

INC on February 3, 2009 at 12:00 AM

Compare the WSJ article to this total whitewash and cover for the Obama administration from the same press that hounded Bush for years with scandals and accusations that proved to be nothing but partisan witch hunts and lies:

This is how the press covers for Obama!!
PROMISES, PROMISES: No lobbyists at WH, except ..
.
By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer Charles Babington, Associated Press Writer
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090203/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_reform_promises_2/print

Maybe he shouldn’t have promised so much, some open-government advocates say. They’re willing to cut him some slack — for now.

“Even the toughest rules require reasonable exceptions,” said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

“It was probably a mistake to come down so hard on lobbyists,” said Melanie Sloan, who is not shy about criticizing lobbyists or politicians as executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. “I think the Obama folks’ intentions were great here,” she said. “But sometimes you realize you can’t actually govern on just what you campaigned on.”

Daschle, a former senator tapped to head Health and Human Services, is not technically a lobbyist. But he was paid more than $5.2 million over the past two years as he advised health insurers and hospitals and worked in other industries such as energy and telecommunications.

Fred Wertheimer of Democracy21 is one of Washington’s best-known advocates of more open and honest government. He called Obama’s executive order “unprecedented and almost revolutionary in nature” and “a direct attack on the culture of Washington and the way business is done here.”
“A few waivers will not undermine it,” he said, provided they are justified and limited.

Over and over and over the AP/Yahoo article does nothing but justify the hypocrisy and corruption of Obama.

It is just sickening to watch the MSM work so hard on scarring up their knees and forcing their heads as far up Obama a$$ as they can in defending this Paparazzi President.

Unfortunately the WSJ article is an exception instead of the norm.
We watched for 8 years as the MSM pumped bogus scandals like Bush stole the 2000/2004 elections,Bush lied about pre-war intel,Bush did 9/11,the bogus Plame scandel, torture, constitution being ripped up…blah..blah…blah.

Not one single rant or conspiracy theory ever evolved into the truth and was dis proven over and over.

We watched hour long specials on CNN and NBC/MSNBC/CBS about Foley,Rove,Abramoff to name a few.

Now we have Rangel,Jefferson,Dodd,Barney Frank,Richardson,Blago,Spitzer,Geithner,Daschle and many others from the democratic party and all we get is

“minor mistake,could happen to anybody”,

“distraction,nothing to see here,move along”,

“This is just a red herring”

The democrats know that the press will cover for them no matter what.
Pravda west at it’s finest.

Obama could pull out an AK-47 and shoot 20 polar Bears while yelling “take that you ni$$er Fa%%ots”

and all the press would do is congratulate him for providing food and clothing for the poor.

How pathetic!!!

I hope you are right.
We need to see this corrupt liberal activist arm called the MSM to come crashing right down with him.

I believe the more people turn to the internet, the more they will reject this hypocrisy, corruption, and failure that is liberalism.

Why places like Detroit,NY,LA,and DC that are broke and swimming in crime and failed schools have not gotten it yet is amazing.

How much failure do these people have to be slapped with before they wake up.

Baxter Greene on February 3, 2009 at 12:46 AM

Someone mentioned impeachment in an earlier thread. Right now, with the democrap Majority in the house, the articles of impeachment wouldn’t stand a chance. Obama could rape a class of second graders at halftime on the 50 yard line at the superbowl and he’d still be prez.

HOWEVER, if there is enough backlash and conservative republicans take the house in 2010, then Obama will probably be soiling his drawers

Now, I’m sure he would know that so I think we can look forward to every possible underhanded trick being used to assure a democrap majority in 2010.. It isn’t even going to be close to fair. He’s got a little less than 2 years. Acorn, the press, false accusation and contrived crisis will be used in every possible way

I forgot to highlight it,but this quote shows more than anything how full of sh!t the AP/Yahoo article is:

Even Republicans praised Daschle’s cerebral, soft-spoken approach to government and politics, and his expertise on subjects including health care. He didn’t choose to leave Congress for a high-paying job, but was defeated in a close re-election bid in 2004.

I would love to know which Republicans feel this way if any.
It is not like this guy was running things for the democrats 20 years ago.
He was booted out due to his partisanship and scandal mongering that embarrassed his constituents and lead to his own people rejecting him for his ineffectiveness.

In short,
Daschle was an A$$hole!!!

And to think, our ancestors broke from Great Britain over mere pennies…

gmoonster on February 3, 2009 at 1:33 AM

On the other hand, it was Obama’s decision to nominate Daschle in the first place; presumably, he knew all along that this guy was a classic Beltway animal. Scads of lawmakers have left Capitol Hill and promptly cashed in on their connections and expertise by signing up with the deep-pocket companies that they once regulated. Daschle epitomizes that traditional Washington two-step. He has taken in roughly $5.3 million in the last two years alone – including $300,000 from health-care companies that he would have to regulate if he is confirmed as HHS secretary. And he was savvy enough to elude the strictures that are imposed by lobbyists, because, while he has been giving “policy advice” to private sector clients, he has never registered as a lobbyist.

Will Daschle be confirmed? A Senate Democratic spokesman said yes, citing Daschle’s “long and distinguished career and record in public service.” Translation: Daschle is a member in good standing of the Senate club, and it’s hard to imagine that club members will sandbag one of their own, for the behavior that they too would indulge in the private sector if given the chance.
- Dick Polman

Bankrolling charitable gifts

Financial firms and other companies receiving billions of dollars in federal bailout money spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for meetings and charitable gifts on behalf of lawmakers.

At one event in December, several of the biggest financial firms in the country sponsored a reception on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and dinner at the NYSE Club where Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, was the keynote speaker.

Bank of America contributed $35,000 for the Dec. 18 event, which was organized by the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, records show. Justin Nelson, the chamber’s president, said Citigroup contributed $17,500 and Goldman Sachs another $35,000, although records do not include those expenses. The three banks have received a combined $105 billion in bailout money from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). Bank of America and Citigroup have required repeated bailouts from the government.

Many of the fundraisers are well-known moneymen and women in Democratic circles. Those leading the list raised at least $300,000. They include two of Obama’s top campaign fundraisers: Louis Susman, who retired this month as vice chairman of banking giant and government bailout recipient Citigroup, and billionaire Hyatt hotel heiress Penny Pritzker.

How’s this for “hope and change”.

There apparently is an expiration date on this from Obama also:

“what I’ve done throughout this campaign is to propose a net spending cut…. What I want to emphasize … is that I have been a strong proponent of pay-as-you-go. Every dollar that I’ve proposed, I’ve proposed an additional cut so that it matches.”

Well, if it’s sanctioned by the IRS, no problem. Doubly so if the recipient doesn’t know that the IRS knows of their foreign “evasion” holdings. I’d start outing those folks first, on the right. Nowhere to hide, nowhere to run, but the IRS is going to have some fun.

Not all of those 3 million “green” jobs are environmental jobs.

sethstorm on February 3, 2009 at 2:45 AM

But we don’t need to worry about corruption because Obama promised that his administration would be the most transparent in history.

Yea right:

Transparency, Huh?
http://moorethoughts.com/2009/02/02/transparency-huh/

I was just watching Mr. Gibbs, President Obama’s press flack. He plugged the new site, http://www.recovery.gov saying there would be “details” about the “stimulus” bill. Here is a great example of “transparency”.

Check back after the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to see how and where your tax dollars are spent.

That’s right suckers, look at what we are going to do with your money “after” we have already passed the bill.
How progressive!!!

What a joke.

UPDATE And now we’re “saving or creating” 3 or 4 million jobs. That bar just keeps getting ratcheted farther and farther down … don’t trip, Mr. President!

Joke is right.
Nothing this Paparazzi President says is credible at all.
Typical liberal.

This “saving jobs” line is a joke. This can’t be realistically measured and is nothing but rewriting the level of success that use to be measured in “jobs created”.

Can we now say that Bush created millions of jobs and saved
about 50 million with the tax cuts.

Baxter Greene on February 3, 2009 at 2:53 AM

Not all of those 3 million “green” jobs are environmental jobs.

sethstorm on February 3, 2009 at 2:45 AM

I have heard that most of these “green jobs” are not jobs created at all since going green actually puts people out of many jobs they are doing now and switches them over to these
supposed “green jobs”.

If this is true, it’s not going to make a dent in that unemployment rate.

Baxter Greene on February 3, 2009 at 2:57 AM

Baxter Greene on February 3, 2009 at 2:57 AM

Adding more people to the rolls of the IRS to pursue foreign “evasive” holdings will. Adding more people to go out and carry out their deeds will. Getting people to manage all that equipment the IRS uses will.

I hear there would be plenty of folks already unemployed who have no issue with being with the IRS.

Scepticism grows over the viability of green projects

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/economics/wef/article5607996.ece

Doubts have surfaced over the Government’s commitment to cut UK greenhouse gas emissions by at least 34 per cent by 2020 as falling oil prices and the global credit crisis have triggered a funding crisis. Last week E.ON, the German utility group, and Masdar, a fund controlled by Abu Dhabi, said that they were reconsidering the viability of the London Array.

Shell pulled out of the scheme last year, citing spiralling costs, while BP also said it was abandoning the UK’s renewable energy sector, blaming a lack of incentives. Gordon Brown has put the creation of thousands of “green-collar” jobs at the centre of his plans for an economic recovery.

The Europeans are supposed to be leading the way in “going green” but have shown mostly jobs losses and businesses threatening to leave the country if these “green mandates” that have cost them billions are not pulled back.

Mandate could force gas stations out of business

Economy hits home

ARCADIA – Dozens of gas stations around California are choosing to shut down rather than comply with a state mandate that would require owners to purchase new equipment to reduce vapor emissions at the pump

So far,a lot of the talk of going green has resulted in taxes, massive increases in business costs, and “carbon credit” money that can’t be shown to have accomplished anything.

Does not look like a recipe for job growth to me.

Baxter Greene on February 3, 2009 at 4:09 AM

With a world wide economic crises, many countries like
China and India that are not “going green”,and global warming losing credibility each passing day,I think the American people need serious actions taken by Congress on job creation.

Economic crisis threatens EU measures on climate change

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080921/sc_afp/euclimatechange
by Christian Spillman Sun Sep 21, 2:45 PM ET

BRUXELLES (AFP) – The recent economic downturn could push the European Union to adopt more modest ambitions in its fight against climate change.

Although the European Commission has said it wants to cut greenhouse gases by 20 percent by 2020, business leaders oppose the use of fines to oblige industry to reduce its emissions — especially in the current economic crisis.
The cost to industry is estimated at some 44 billion euros per year between 2013 and 2020, with a tonne (1.1 US tons) of C02 costing 30 euros.

Business leaders have denounced the policy as a “tax”, threatening to take their investments elsewhere and move their more polluting activities out of Europe.
Faced with the threat of job losses, governments are feeling the pressure.

Green tax revolt: Britons ‘will not foot bill to save planet’
Majority of Britons are opposed to increases in green taxation

More than seven in 10 voters insist that they would not be willing to pay higher taxes in order to fund projects to combat climate change, according to a new poll.
The survey also reveals that most Britons believe “green” taxes on 4x4s, plastic bags and other consumer goods have been imposed to raise cash rather than change our behaviour, while two-thirds of Britons think the entire green agenda has been hijacked as a ploy to increase taxes.

Billions of pounds are being wasted in paying industries in developing countries to reduce climate change emissions, according to two analyses of the UN’s carbon offsetting programme.

Raising taxes and making it harder for people to compete and conduct business is not going to create jobs.

There have always been crooks in Washington… but now they don’t even try to hide it anymore… and somehow STILL get elected and re-elected.

That’s because there is nobody decent to run against them, to give us an alternative to the same ol’ same ol’. The party machine puts up a candidate and says, “vote for him.” Nobody else to vote for.
On the other hand, I doubt decent people would be in politics in the first place.

Explain “tax havens”…do you mean like wRangel did with his offshore investments? Or what Soros is doing offshore? Do you mean Feinstein’s husband’s offshore businesses that she was caught giving contracts to? Or do you mean Feinsteins and Pelosi’s businesses that they gave special income tax breaks to? Maybe Kennedy’s holdings and banking in the Carribean?
You mean those kinds of tax havens?
The dems made those legal after they had been caught…except they forgot to pay taxes like wRangel, and they never paid any late penalaties, like wRangel.
Thanks for reminding us of more dems tax cheaters…

Don’t bother fighting the Daschele nomination. Let Barry have him and all the complications and conflicts of interest. The sooner these crooks reach critical mass the sooner this administration will implode. The sooner it becomes undeniably clear that we, as a nation, bought into a lie.

Granted, we’ll have to clean up the mess. But I’d rather get that over with sooner than later.

sethstorm on February 3, 2009 at 8:04 AM

Hey, HA readers, here’s a red herring alert.

I’ve chased this clown sethstorm for several days on a couple of threads addressing the tax issues relating to Geithner and Daschle. Each time he throws up the red herring of tax havens without explaining the issue and, then, without providing a link to demonstrate that it’s a uniquely Republican problem.

Don’t waste your time. Besides, he’s doing nothing more than engaging in a rhetorical technique in which, because his guys are conducting themselves indefensibly, he chooses to change the subject. Obama did the same thing in his famous race speech. There, the issue was how Obama could sit in that hateful man’s church for 20 years, and, according to Obama, the issue was really about race in America. Yeah, right. Thanks for changing the subject.

At any rate, the only issue with Geithner and Daschle is whether they are honest people. Given the way that they’ve handled their tax matters, I say that they aren’t. As it’s been said, character is how you conduct yourself when no one is looking. Geithner and Daschle fail this test. In the end, we deserve better.

So, just ignore sethstorm’s tax-haven accusations because he won’t explain the issue, and he won’t provide any links to support his comments. More important, his comments have nothing to do with the appointments of Geithner and Daschle, two lying sacks.

BuckeyeSam on February 3, 2009 at 8:51 AM

Actually I thanked him for pointing out some of the most egregious examples of dems using “tax havens”…I think his are valuable in the sense that what he posts, ends up being a disaster for the dems.
wRangels argument of not paying taxes on rent he received was because his investment was “off shore”, a tax haven.
wRangel has never paid the fines or the interest on this tax evasion.
So thanks to sethstorm for pointing out how the dems have been using tax havens, we have actual proof that the dems are using that to cheat the U.S.
