Obama to meet with Chavez

posted at 10:37 am on February 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Call it the first fruits of Barack Obama’s boast in the July 2007 YouTube debate.  Obama will meet one-fifth of that obligation in April, when he will apparently meet with Venezuelan dictator-wannabe Hugo Chavez in Trinidad:

United States President, Barack Obama will have a face-to-face meeting with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez in April in Port of Spain, when the two leaders will be among three dozen heads of government and state at the three day Summit of the Americas.

This information was confirmed by Summit Secretariat Communications Co-ordinator, Felipe Noguera.

Top of the agenda of the Summit will be burning energy issues in which both the United States and Venezuela have a keen interest.

The Trinidad Express reported that Noguera told newsmen that Secretariat Chairman, Ambassador Carlos Luis Alberto Rodriguez indicated that Venezuela and the USA were at loggerheads on energy issues to be highlighted in the Declaration of Port of Spain. The declaration — outlining policy goals in coming years for the 34 countries in the Americas in the fields of energy, education, environment and health — will be signed by the leaders during the April 17-19 summit.

Recall that Obama promised to meet with the leaders of five rogue nations “without preconditions” in the first year of his presidency.  The question in the debate specifically mentioned Hugo Chavez, along with Kim Jong-Il, Bashar Assad, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and whichever Castro is still breathing.  Later, Obama tried to back away from his pledge, saying that “preparations” would take place rather than “preconditions”, but could not articulate the difference between the two.

Now we stand at the event, and we have to wonder what “preparations” have taken place for this summit meeting.  Has Chavez stopped funding FARC terrorists?  Has Obama even demanded that publicly in these first two weeks in office?  If he has, it’s escaped the attention of the press, and certainly Chavez hasn’t repudiated FARC since the discovery of his funding in the Colombian raid last fall.

I have contacted the White House for confirmation of this meeting and to get an answer as to whether “preparations” include a demand for Chavez to stop supporting terrorism in Latin America.  I will keep you updated on their response.

I must have missed the section in my classes on American History where our Founding Fathers exploded bombs around the necks of civilians and extorted millions by kidnapping other luckless civilians. Making excuses for terrorists, Hack? Lame. No wonder Hack and other progre-ives don’t believe there’s a war going on against Islamic terrorists. They’re just poor, misunderstood ”Revolutionaries” like our Founding Fathers, don’t cha know?

Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Danny Glover, Fidel Castro, Vlad Putin and now Barry Obama lending their prestige President for Life Hugo Chavez. Perhaps they all agree that political power is best horded once obtained, that elections are to be ceremonial formalities and that free speech is for me, not for thee. Exactly what Chavez behavior is being positively reinforced by this gesture, Barry?

I don’t think he understands what you just posted. Here’s my help:

Any birthrate lower than 2.0 means the population is decreasing AND growing older. Any birthrate greater than 2.0 means that the population is increasing and growing younger (subject to mortality).

Obviously, a birthrate of exactly 2.0 means that (subject to mortality) the population is replacing itself, and is neither getting younger nor growing older.

I add the phrase “subject to mortality” to indicate that if the country has a high infant mortality rate, the birthrate number needs to be adjusted to account for that.

Hence, the better measurement is “rate of population increase”, which adjusts for overall mortality. Choosing that measure, interestingly, still makes your point.

Ryan Gandy on February 2, 2009 at 1:45 PM

Well, Obama was awfully cagey about what exactly those “preconditions” were.

But the good news is that, whatever the Hell concessions Obama wanted from the world’s terrorists and dictators, it looks like they were all met within a few hours of him taking office.

Oh, wait… Except for the meetings Obama had with Iran “several months ago.”

Damn. Believe it or not, I was honestly trying there.

Seriously, there is flat-out NO way to justify ANY of this crap.

haha, i don’t mind debating at all. i hope that nothing i said came across as an attack, but you did say some pretty far-out-there stuff that can get people upset. whether you’re a plant, or just a regular person, i would hope that you keep your eyes open and your mind fluid and learn something. listen to both sides and don’t believe everything the main-stream-media is selling you.

this “stimulus” package being pushed by democrats is just a way to pay constituents and buy votes. the government is not going to invest in anything or make wise business decisions so they get a nice return, their only mission is to get re-elected. they are investing in votes.

Obama, Colombian president talk by phone

Both Clinton and Obama, as Democratic senators, opposed ratification of a free trade agreement with Colombia, expressing concerns over continuing slayings of labor leaders in the Andean nation, the world’s most dangerous for union organizing.

If you’re a vehement America hating, terrorist sponsoring dictator like Ass-hat, Ackdermeinjihad or better yet a communist union wannabe all of the above like Yugo F-vez, hey baby lets do lunch lets talk about good times, yeah.

But if you’re a Democracy and an ally that attacks the drug trade, fights the F-vez terrorists and is a great bargain for us in free trade? Screw them, phone it in and by the way, kiss my a$$ cuz we like drugs and communist unions..dude.

Chavez has demonstrated goodwill towards Americans, if not towards the Bush Administration. He’s more popular here than people think and is one of the few leaders who makes sure his oil wealth is distributed to the people who live on the land (I’m looking at you Nigeria). It’s very Palin like when you think about it. And he won in Democratic elections, the people are big fans. What’s the problem again?

Obama is like Hitler in one ominous aspect: like Hitler he stated his goals and agenda clearly.

That he is extending a hand of friendship to Iran, Syria, Hamas, and Chavez should pose no surprise.

Obama is a socialist, Marxist, totalitarian, or autocratic. His goal is to ‘transform’ America into a ‘socialist paradise’ and in so doing dismantle and destroy the foundation of American society that has existed in the past 220 years: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, freedom of speech and religion, 2nd Amendment rights, American exceptionalism, free enterprise, personal initiative and responsibility, and importance of family life and the belief in the natural rights of man bestowed to us by God.

If Obama and his merry men and women can establish a permanent presidency by abolishing the 22nd Amendment, they will succeed. I do not question their motives. I know their motives.

The only thing I don’t know is what the American people will do when Obama comes first for their guns, then takes away their rights and then finally decides to marginalize them or ‘purge’ them. Will they fight or will they acquiesce to the Messiah?

technopeasant on February 3, 2009 at 4:29 AM

The truth is, you never know how good you had it until you don’t have it anymore. I see socialism in this country the same way as a alcoholic has to hit rock bottom before he can appreciate what he lost and turn his life around.

When the mindless masses can’t get things they can get now because the government tells them they can’t, they’ll turn around. It’ll happen. Unless there is no USA at that point.
