Daschle: I’m Sorry

posted at 12:00 pm on February 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Tom Daschle has sent a letter of apology to the Senate Finance Committee for his multiple tax failures, proclaiming himself “embarrassed and disappointed” now that they’ve come to light.  He needs to convince them that he’s repentant enough to give them cover to confirm him as HHS Secretary.  However, that misses the point entirely:

Thomas A. Daschle, fighting to defend his nomination to be secretary of health and human services, released a letter early today apologizing to the top lawmakers on the Senate Finance Committee for mistakes on his personal income tax returns that resulted in $146,000 in back payments.

“I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required me to amend my tax returns,” he wrote to Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa). “I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have had to devote time to them.”

Well, no one doubted that Daschle regretted the errors … now.  It just seemed that neither Daschle nor Timothy Geithner bothered to feel remorse until after their appointments, and after their tax failures came to light.  Criminals often feel remorse at about the same point in their lives, and their remorse means little to their victims.

And Daschle made it clear eleven years ago that tax evasion is not a victimless crime (page S4507).  They “cheat us all”.  That includes people who want us to believe that they never thought a limousine service provided by an employer could be considered taxable compensation — until the possibility of a high-profile government appointment suddenly appeared with Obama’s success in the Democratic primaries.

Still, Daschle has a lot of friends on Capitol Hill, and the Senate almost never refuses to confirm one of its own.  The last time I recall that happening was when John Tower got rejected for his appointment as Secretary of Defense under George H. W. Bush in 1989.  Interestingly, the Democratic-controlled Senate rejected Tower for his closeness to the defense industry, as well as  unsubstantiated allegations of womanizing and drinking.  (Dick Cheney instead got appointed and confirmed as SecDef, in one of life’s little ironies.)  Considering Daschle’s close ties to health-care contractors and the myriad tax failures surrounding that relationship, Daschle’s apology should not keep the Senate from giving him the Tower treatment.

We need a tax code that:

The Treasury Secretary
The HHS Secretary
The Ways and Means Chairman

Can all understand. And one of these guys actually writes the tax code.

Obama seems intent on surrounding himself with a variety of crooks–not just tax cheats. What is becoming more and more apparent is that he has become so hardened to this sort of thing after his years connected with Chicago(or maybe always?), that he sees it as the norm and quite acceptable. Witness his cavalier and indifferent response to a what is a terrible stimulus bill. He took the stance of ‘well, if no one notices it we’ll just move right on ‘ and never took his own Party in the house to task for it right up front as he should have done. Little or no self honesty or self imposed integrity I’m afraid.

I only found out within the past month or so that “serfs” as a class only came into existence in Czarist Russia under “Peter the Great”. With a swipe of the pen he bolstered his coffers and gained the loyalty of his powerful dissidents. All he had to do was decree that if you weren’t currently one of the wealthy – as defined at the time by owning land – then you automatically owned by the landowner you rented from. With no way for you, your children, your grand-children ad infinitum to purchase your freedom. Of course, he is “The Great” because he brought Russia, kicking and screaming, into the mold of European society. Scary, huh?

Just as a reminder:

Joe the Plumber, a.k.a. Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher of Holland, Ohio, is suddenly (sort of) a household name, featured in a McCain ad and sought after by networks news anchors and newspaper reporters. McCain would like to meet him in person this weekend, but Wurzelbacher’s got a date on Mike Huckabee’s Fox News show and might not have the time.

But the emergence of Joe has allowed the state of Ohio to locate the man it says owes nearly $1,200 in back taxes. His motives for confronting Sen. Barack Obama at a campaign stop in his neighborhood earlier this week are the subject of intense Internet speculation. The city of Toledo is preparing a letter to his employer seeking to determine whether he is violating city codes, and the plumbers union is on his tail…

Reporters wondering who Wurzelbacher is quickly found that he owes the state of Ohio $1,182 in back taxes, leading sharp-tongued liberal commentators to say he was not so much concerned about rising taxes as paying taxes at all. (A spokeswoman for the state said it is possible Wurzelbacher did not know about the lien.)

canditaylor68 on February 2, 2009 at 12:38 PM

Though he is always difficult to stomach, especially when describing American soldiers as Nazis, I found DICK Durbin’s assessment of Daschle’s selfless career profoundly enlightening in its contempt for the voter and normal citizen.

Get this; after serving in Congress for over 20 years, Poor Tom’s net worth was under a million dollars. Can you feel his pain? Let me repeat, after serving his country, not himself, his ambition, his family or his despicable political party mind you, this mensch, this altruist, was not even worth a million dollars.

Now there are a few things one might infer from this statement: (1)DICK is indeed one. 2)DICK thinks he and his fellow tax cheaters are terribly underpaid. (3) DICK believes that Daschle (and he, DICK) sacrificed his enormous talents for the public good and that had his humongous intellect been applied to something like, oh, radio broadcasting (oops, bad example) he would have made tens of millions just like all the other incredible intellects sitting in the House and Senate. (4) Daschle (and DICK), because he gave up his life for us, the ungrateful lower lights, should be given credit for not having been corrupt while in office (this asks us to believe he was not corrupt)and piling up millions while a sitting Senator. (Is he intimating there are others doing just this? Hey, DIANE, is he talking about you and hubby, Richard, the other DICK?)

Thankfully, for Tommy, he was able to make up the Great Deficit, after the voters of SD, (sensing perhaps they had a tax cheat as a Senator) sent him off to lobbying school.

Folks, the Bolsheviks had it right. They just had their pistols pointed in the wrong direction.

My e-mail to Daschle’s office:

I’d communicate this more harshly if you were a conservative because I’d expect more in that case.

You’ve demonstrated yourself to be dishonest when no one was looking. You feign sorrow and regret now that you’re under public scrutiny. But character is what you do when no one is looking, and you have no character.

This is a great country, and it deserves honest people in leadership–people other than you.

FWIW: Daschle’s e-mail address relates to an office has at a DC law firm styled Alston Baird. It’s a megafirm that, I believe, is based in Atlanta, and Daschle must be associated somehow with its DC office. Virtually, all megafirms have DC offices–and the DC offices consist of not much more than lobbyists. Sure, there are other areas of practice, but lobbying is usually the raison d’etre.

It just seemed that neither Daschle nor Timothy Geithner bothered to feel remorse until after their appointments, and after their tax failures came to light.

I have dealt with the criminal mind throughout the centuries. It never changes. They do not feel remorse. They just feel set upon and like victims that they were found out. If they get away with a display of crocodile tears it only emboldens then to seek self redemption by attempting to commit even bigger crimes and not get caught next time.

Secretary of Health and Human Services nominee Tom Daschle has an even bigger tax problem than Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner: Daschle paid more than $140,000 in taxes and interest on January 2, 2009 for three tax mistakes he made on his 2005-2007 tax returns comprising over $350,000 of omitted income and overstated deductions that were uncovered in the vetting process:

* Failing to report over $255,000 of income from the free use of a car and chauffer provided to him in 2005-2007 by InterMedia Partners, a private equity fund and its managing partner, Leo Hindery, Jr., a prominent Democratic fund-raiser.
* Failing to report over $80,000 of consulting income from the same source in 2007.
* Failing to properly substantiate $15,000 of charitable deductions in 2005-2007.

The Senate Finance Committee staff also notes that there are two unresolved tax issues:

* Free travel and entertainment services provided to the Daschles by EduCap, Inc., Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation, Academy Achievement, and Loan to Learn.
* Additional unsubstantiated charitable contributions for 2005-2007.

Is there somesort of Michael Richards / David Duchovney rehab program for these folks?

The fix is in. Dasche will be the sacrificial lamb… Obama now considers the tax issue “serious”..

Give this 48 hours and Tom will be a good soldier.

I don’t see what the issue is. He said he was sorry. I am hopeful that if the day should ever come and I make a little $128,000.00 mistake on my taxes all I need to do is say I’m sorry. It’s good for me and good for the government. Think if the money that would be saved by me and by the US Government.

I hope they get Tom Daschle on the take federal payroll soon. He is Obama’s kind of guy.

Why is he not getting the Wesley Snipes treatment? I’m I to understand the way the U.S. Tax Code works is that you are required to pay your taxes at the end of a shotgun or face jail time for the regular citizenry but if I’m a lawmaker I have the get of jail card free safe word, “Sorry…”? Then I don’t have to pay or I can just pay some of the back taxes and be done with it?

Where do I get one of these lawmaker jobs?

Now I understand where Harry Reid got the idea income taxes are “voluntary.”

Daschle: I’m Sorry I got caught.

I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed

We understand the feeling, you were once part of this country’s leadership. You still should go to prison though.

Hog Wild on February 2, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Well, no one doubted that Daschle regretted the errors … now.

No, he regretted being caught.

If you were really sorry and repentant…resign, then we will know you are sincere.

right2bright on February 2, 2009 at 1:16 PM

Absolutely – at the very least, turn down the Cabinet appointment…

uncivilized on February 2, 2009 at 6:49 PM

He doesn’t feel ‘remorse’ for having cheated the government, he feels remorse that the committee has to turn over all his rocks and see the slime there. He’s worse than Blago.

eaglewingz08 on February 2, 2009 at 6:54 PM

Daschle’s sorry performance filled with sorry excuses makes him one sorry limosine liberal.

Actually, you are way off in this analysis. Politicians do not get special status in committing tax fraud. DEMOCRAT politicians do, but not just any old politician.
