Audio: Hannity wonders why Democrats don’t pay taxes

posted at 6:59 pm on February 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Some might say that Sean Hannity is being unfair to Democrats, but they’re the ones who provide the examples. With Al Franken and Charles Rangel already exposed for their serial tax evasions, the last thing Democrats needed was a couple more high-profile examples — but Barack Obama provided them anyway as Cabinet appointments. And four does start looking more like a trend:

Here’s the question. Why don’t liberals pay taxes? We kept hearing the Caroline Kennedy had a tax problem. Timothy Geithner has a tax problem. The committee that writes tax law, the House Ways and Means Committee, well their chairman Charlie Rangel, whoops sorry, he failed to report seventy-five thousand dollars in income. Oh it’s a hiccup, it’s not a problem, and of course we have I guess, the hero of every liberal is Al Franken and Al Franken didn’t pay his taxes in what, eighteen states or whatever it was at the time. I mean just absurd.

To be fair, we don’t know that Caroline Kennedy has tax problems; that was just one rumor among several that got floated as a reason for her withdrawal from consideration as a replacement for Hillary Clinton. I don’t think I’d characterize Franken as a “hero of every liberal” either. I’ve met more than a few that are embarrassed by his presence, although not nearly enough. Still, four looks less like coincidence and more like a pattern of people who want to jack up taxes while doing their best to keep from paying them.

Why is anybody surprised? It’s always the liberals who want to tell the “unwashed masses” what to do, but they’re just little people. Liberals are “thinking” people, “enlightened” to the point that their mere presence on the planet is sufficient to cover not only their unpaid taxes, but their carbon footprint to boot.

I’m no lawyer but isn’t tax evasion up there with SEC violations? If so, then Martha Stewart should be screaming bloody murder. She was sent away for a year and forced to live without her glue gun and sauce pans and yet, other common criminals are getting appointed to cabinet positions.

Look, I still like all of you. I feel that this is a good place to go so that I can find opposing viewpoints. I get tired of groupthink whevever it might be, a conservative point of view or liberal point of view.

Don’t get so angry. It’s not personal. I think it’s fun. If you allow this stuffto be personal, you’ll be like some liberals have been for the past eight years.

And as for Dick Morris; this thread gave me an opportunity to criticize someone that I believe is a scumbag. And for right4life; he contiues to go on tv, along with other conservative pundits, to say that Al Franken is “stealing” the election. That’s not true. The process has been incredibly transparent. And I don’t even like Franken that much. I do, however, like him much more than I like Coleman.

I guess Hannity is just a divisive hater. Today, Monday the 2nd, I heard a fool named Hugh Hewitt say that Daschle’s and Geithner’s tax problems are no big deal. Let them pay the taxes off, and drop it as an issue. Hugh wants to “fix” the confirmation process, whatever that means. Hugh also says those guys make a lot of money, way more than you or I do, and these things just happen. No biggie.

I am not kidding. Draw your own conclusions.

Even more hilarious, he said Daschle and Geithner and the rest are not the big story of the day… the big story is… wait for it… Michael Phelps took a bong hit. Again, I’m not making this up.

George Orwell on February 2, 2009 at 8:41 PM

Liberals don’t pay taxes because the government exists to take money from others to give to them, not the other way around.

notagool on February 2, 2009 at 9:04 PM

Hey getalife. You also must remember that Joe the Plumber likely didn’t have expensive accountants working for him either. There is no excuse for Daschle and Geithner.

And again, Joe the plumber is a normal citizen and he got smeared for having tax problems. He also likely had to pay a fine on his what 1,000 dollars in back taxes. Where is the fine Daschle had to pay. I haven’t heard about it yet.

I recall the gist of a factoid regarding MA taxes from Jay Tea, formerly of Wizbang!: some years ago, a state tax hike was about to end. The difference in the increased amount was roughly one half of one percent (IIRC, between 5.2% and 5.8%). Renewing that hike was not popular with voters, so MA legislators made provision at tax time such that taxpayers could voluntarily pay the portion that was not renewed.

Guess how many MA residents voluntarily paid the higher tax bracket?

NONE.

BTW, don’t forget the wealth of the Kennedy clan, nor that of remarried Kerry. Neither Teddy (D-Chivas) nor Jawn (D-Clueless) elected to pay the higher tax bracket.

Nor is there any penalty for voluntarily overpaying Federal income taxes, either. In fact, others here have posted the link to the Treasury website outlining how individuals can make donations to retire the public debt.

When BJ Clinton was whining about how insulted he was that taxes were not increased to pay for the Iraq war, how much did he or his foundation elect to donate to retire the public debt?

NOTHING.

All of these pikers say the same thing when they get caught: “Oops, I missed that one.”

But the U.S.’s insanely complex and confusing tax code (that they helped create and maintain) forces millions of businesses and individuals in this country to pay the “hidden tax” of hiring tax professionals to keep themselves out of just these situations.

None of them blamed their accountant. Do they have tax accountants? Do they realize the miserable burden that is just part of normal life for so many of having to pay someone to figure out how much you owe the government so you don’t loose your house, your business or your freedom?

These jokers belong in jail.

tell me sandman, why hasn’t the IRS filed a lien against DASCHLE, or GEITHNER??? hmmm?? like they did against morris…why don’t those RATs have to pay any interest or penalties…kind of like RANGEL that good ‘RAT???

Rep. Carter introduced a bill Wednesday to eliminate all IRS penalties and interest for paying taxes past due.

The legislation calls for the creation of what he calls the, “Rangel Rule,” — drawing attention to the recent legal issues of House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y., enabling citizens who fail to pay taxes on time to do so later with no additional fees.

Rangel, who writes the country’s tax policies, acknowledged last fall that he failed to pay thousands in real estate taxes for rental income he earned from a property in the Dominican Republic.

As of September 2008 the Harlem Democrat reportedly paid back more than $10,000 in taxes but that did not include any IRS penalties.

link

from your article

Morris says he’s reached an agreement with Connecticut and his name will be removed from the next delinquency list. He says he is committed to paying his taxes: “Following a difficult period in my life, I fell into arrears. But since then, I have paid almost $3 million in state and federal taxes.”

Geithner, Rangel, and Daschle made NO EFFORT to pay back taxes, faced no action from the IRS…hmmmmmmm…wonder why???

Let’s start with the facts about Joe the Plumber. It was widely reported that he had a tax lien of $1200. The county acknowledged that they had not notified Joe. It was then discovered that he, in fact, did not have a lien at all. Not widely reported by the leftard MSM.

nondhimmie on February 2, 2009 at 9:59 PM

right4life, they have no liens because they have already paid their taxes with interest. If you pay your bill, you will have no lien.

The object is to retrieve payment, and your friend Dick Morris will have the opportunity to pay his back-taxes. He still owes money. He has yet to fulfill his obligation. When he does, those liens will disappear.

Why do you think he’s on Fox News so much, promoting his book, website, column, or other projects. He’s working hard to pay this thing off. Next time you see him on tv, just listen for the amount of promotion.

“That never said all tax cheaters should be imprisoned.”

F15Mech on February 2, 2009 at 10:01 PM

Why do Democrats cheat? First, note that, for all their generous programs, they never consider charity as a vehicle. As a matter of fact, most of them resist private donations and try to limit the scope of private charities.

It is widely recognized that there is an ingredient of sadism and jealously in their programs which leads to constantly inventing programs to punish those who are more sucessful than they are. If taxes punish, don’t pay them. Only masochists want to punish themselves.

I can’t claim to be a psychotherapist but liberals tend to be left brained and rebellous. Conservatives tend to respect authority and follow rules. Therefore, they pay taxes and respect law.

The major support for the above is actually simple. Namely, if they feel that their expansion of government has the impetus of caring for their fellow citizens, why be unwilling to pay for it?

IlikedAUH2O on February 2, 2009 at 10:03 PM

WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary-designate Timothy Geithner said Wednesday he was careless in failing to pay $34,000 in Social Security and Medicare taxes earlier this decade but declared “I have paid what I owed” and apologized to Congress.

He told the Senate Finance Committee he was sorry that his past transgressions were now an issue in his confirmation at a time of deepening economic crisis and urged Congress to act quickly. A top administration priority is to foster economic recovery and “get credit flowing again,” Geithner testified.

As to his failure to pay the payroll taxes from 2001 to 2004 while he worked for the International Monetary Fund, Geithner said: “These were careless mistakes. They were avoidable mistakes.”

Job titles or positions don’t matter anymore.

Even assuming only 4 years…

4 years will be the longest BO ever held an executive position in any way shape matter or form in his lifetime.

F15Mech on February 2, 2009 at 10:34 PM

Oh, no. Not more attacks on community organizers.

Rudy, is that you?

sandman on February 2, 2009 at 10:34 PM

mankai, in case you haven’t noticed, right4 is a classic authoritarian fundamentalist. Full on scripture quoting, fire and brimstone, if you don’t agree with me, then you are a communist, pinko, heathen, DemocRAT, kind of guy. In his world, no way you can be a conservative and hold a differing opinion on any subject whatsoever. I’m with you…Hannity is a lightweight. Spouts the same tired old talking points. Nothing original…all schtick.

dakine on February 2, 2009 at 9:10 PM

better fire, brimstone, and truth, than stupidity and lies…

right4life on February 2, 2009 at 9:42 PM

Let him spout his Greek mythology… that adds nothing Hannity’s ability to make an argument. And if he truly is a fundamentalist (in the purest historical sense), one look at Hannity’s silly “Beyond Belief” segment ought to shake some sense into him.

We shouldn’t settle for Hannity just because he’s “cute.”

mankai on February 2, 2009 at 10:45 PM

We shouldn’t settle for Hannity just because he’s “cute.”

mankai on February 2, 2009 at 10:45 PM

and how big is your audience?? hmmmm?? and what TV show and radio show do YOU host?? hmmm???

where is that rolleye emoticon????

right4life on February 2, 2009 at 10:47 PM

because it would mean that your premise that everyone who doesn’t find Hannity substantive is a Dem/lib/RINO is wrong.

That’s where we are now.

It’s Vintage, Duh on February 2, 2009 at 10:16 PM

I’m still waiting for our outrage at my being called names…

but when you spout left-wing talking points, as whatever his name was..that you came in to defend…and then say you’re a conservative…then I’m gonna call you a liar.

deal with it.

right4life on February 2, 2009 at 10:48 PM

All that I pointed out was, despite his frequency on Hannity’s show, Dick Morris has not been asked about his tax problems.

My comments were directed at the absurdity of Sean Hannity. Dick Morris was the example that I used, and some people didn’t like it, so they began to defend Dick Morris.

sandman on February 2, 2009 at 10:18 PM

as I said, you’re a liar.

Anyone who gives Dick Morris a platform to lie about Democrats, without asking him about his tax evasion, can have no credibility on this subject.

sandman on February 2, 2009 at 7:57 PM

still waiting for all those ‘lies’…and that story about lyin about poor old TAX CHEAT FRANKEN is laughable..he is stealing the election…its what democRATs do!!

right4life on February 2, 2009 at 10:47 PM

I can tell you’re a Hannity fan… you are incapable of making a logical argument.

Try this bit of stupidity on for size (using your ignorant method of analysis)… “How many votes for president did Hannity get? Hmmmm?” Or next time you criticize Obama, “How many votes did YOU get for president? Hmmmm?”

Your line of reasoning is so pitiful, it’s hardly worth addressing (as I doubt you have the mental capacity to comprehend how dismal and illogical it is).

Again, just because I don’t pitch in the majors, doesn’t mean I can’t be critical of the pitchers on my favorite team. So if I think a guy is all flash, but he can’t pitch worth a darn, I’m restricted from being critical because I don’t also pitch in the majors?

Hannity gets three PRIME hours a day and gets paid MILLIONS of dollars… for that we deserve someone who has the capacity to make the conservative argument not just repeat the same drivel incessantly. Hannity brings ZERO people into the movement, he just kisses up to the simple.

mankai on February 2, 2009 at 10:57 PM

And to think the left used tax liens against Joe the Plumber to eviscerate him.

What FUC|<ING hypocrisy these people have.

I really can’t take much more of this FUC|<ING B.S.

James on February 2, 2009 at 10:58 PM

I can tell you’re a Hannity fan… you are incapable of making a logical argument.

and your ‘argument’ is just more left-wing BS. ya got nothing, as usual.

aren’t you the one that said Hannity didn’t get us any more votes??? PROVE IT. put up or shut up.

lets see you make an argument…all you have done is spout left-wing talking points….moron.

right4life on February 2, 2009 at 10:59 PM

Our founders revolted over taxation without representation. Now we have representation that avoids taxation. They are like lords or something. Nobility. Why should the taxman pay taxes?

James on February 2, 2009 at 11:00 PM

you’re obviously an obamabot leaguer…

right4life If you’ve already been called authoritarian fundamentalist you must be doing something right. These liberals do love their lables!!! Way to go. Also, last I checked, Morris isn’t up for a cabinet position. Just saying….

That for four months translated into ZERO votes.

mankai on February 2, 2009 at 7:45 PM

post your proof that this translated in zero votes. you have no argument, no logic, just spew BS. ya got nothing.

He’s just not terribly bright. He misses so many opportunities to make salient points because he just isn’t capable of making them.

bright enough to MAKE MILLIONS..duh, you sound just like a left-wing stooge..insulting people…and then you whine about ‘ad hominen’ attacks…poor dear. jacka**

Hannity is what’s wrong with the GOP. His giddy “zingers” at the left lack substance. Watching him on H&C trot out quotes and repeat them ad nauseum in the faces of his liberal guests made me feel sorry for the liberals.

left-wing talking points…pure BS. you libs pretending to be ‘conservative’ is geting old, can’t you come up with some new lines…

so much for your ‘logic’

laughable idiot.

It's Vintage, Duh on February 2, 2009 at 11:35 PM

I think I’m detecting a pattern here…lefties with blogs who are trolling for website hits, have been posting here in large numbers lately. So, read their drivel first before you click on their liked names…here are 2 perfect examples (and remember, if you click them, google sends them money).

mankai on February 2, 2009 at 10:57 PM

It’s Vintage, Duh on February 2, 2009 at 11:35 PM

So, just be aware of this, before these ‘free thinkers’ convince you that they may be making sense. Otherwise, you may be paying the rent of a lefty deadbeat.

AUINSC on February 3, 2009 at 12:02 AM

Haha. I do love what I would have to do for all that to be true, though:

1) Start blogging.

2) Try to impress doubleplusundead enough that he starts inviting co-bloggers, me included.

3) Write a few conservative/libertarian posts a day.

(All of this, mind you, while really being a liberal.)

4) Wait for a post on Sean Hannity.

5) Stand up for Dennis Miller, who I knew would get slammed by Hannity the Friday before.

6) Take up the uber-liberal position of wishing he was more of an intellectual conservative (i.e. Rush or Levin), instead of just dropping talking points ad nauseum.

All that work, just to get called out so quickly for the liberal I am!

It's Vintage, Duh on February 3, 2009 at 12:15 AM

right4, you’ve demonstrated your authoritarian fundamentalist bona fides time and time again on this site. In your very small world, your version of the truth is “The Truth”. Anybody who dares disagrees with you is stupid, a liar or both, and is doomed to burn in hell for all eternity. You believe in a literal translation of the Bible, you are a creationist, and in the bubble in which you reside, the ends always justify the means. Evidence, reason and rationality mean nothing to you, as you continue to cling to the dogma that rules your existence. In short, you are an authoritarian fundamentalist. You are NOT a conservative. Crawl back under your rock.

Perhaps we all should stop paying taxes.

Unless you’re a lefty politician, you’ll go directly to jail.

jgapinoy on February 2, 2009 at 7:11 PM

uh, didn’t I just read an article that 1 of every 100 americans is in jail or prison? sounds like the system is over flowing with criminals. let them try to put millions of tax evaders in jail. sound’s like a taxpayer revolt to me. ghandi would be proud.

YYZ on February 3, 2009 at 1:13 AM

That’s because we’re not part of the Obama Mania Media with tingly feelings running up and down our legs! (Quick, play the “Endless Love”/Chris Matthews mash up.)

P.S. – Did you hear that The Messiah descended from the heavens at Invesco Field, and has associations like Rev. Wright, Fr. Pfleger, and the *professor* terrorist Bill Ayers. After Sean Hannity gets done with his 4-5 minutes of intro audio sound bites at the beginning of each hour, he’ll tell ya all about it!

It's Vintage, Duh on February 3, 2009 at 1:22 AM

If I can follow Joe Biden’s logic, Democrats do not pay their fair share of taxes because they are unpatriotic.

DrStock on February 2, 2009 at 9:18 PM

yes, you can. democrat = unpatriotic. this used to be obvious.

anti-boomer on February 3, 2009 at 1:23 AM

YYZ on February 3, 2009 at 1:13 AM

but, only if you fill out new w4 and mark “exempt”. great American’s don’t pay taxes. that’s today’s lesson kids. sounds good to me.

anti-boomer on February 3, 2009 at 1:25 AM

Audio: Hannity wonders why Democrats don’t pay taxes

I wonder why Republicans don’t admit to using tax havens if such things have a moral benefit.

Clean out your own and see which right-wingers are tax cheats or have money that somehow is being hidden.
