Ultimate heart-ache: Palin supports the stimulus? Update: Or does she?
posted at 2:00 pm on February 1, 2009 by Allahpundit
The same stimulus that head RINO John McCain opposes for its porkiness?
Most Republican governors have broken with their GOP colleagues in Congress and are pushing for passage of President Barack Obama’s economic aid plan that would send billions to states for education, public works and health care.
Their state treasuries drained by the financial crisis, governors would welcome the money from Capitol Hill, where GOP lawmakers are more skeptical of Obama’s spending priorities.
The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, planned to meet in Washington this weekend with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and other senators to press for her state’s share of the package.
In fairness, there’s a difference between supporting a bill on the merits and agreeing to accept funds from a bill you oppose that’s destined to pass anyway. Jindal, for one, freely admits that he’d have voted against the bill in Congress but will take the money to help Louisiana. No sense standing on principle when it won’t do any good, right?
Right?
The most outspoken critic has been South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who has warned for months of a steep spike in inflation and a severely weakened dollar if Obama’s plan passed. His state is on track to receive $2.1 billion of the stimulus money; Sanford has not yet said whether he would accept it.
“It’s incumbent on me as one of the nation’s governors to speak out against what I believe is ultimately incredibly harmful to the economy, to taxpayers and to the worth of the U.S. dollar,” Sanford said in an interview. “This plan is a huge mistake and is going to prolong and deepen this recession.”…
Associates say Sanford, who recently was elected chairman of the Republican Governors Association, has been disappointed in how few of his GOP colleagues have joined him in speaking out against the size and scope of Obama’s plan.
See Flip’s latest graphic for a handle on that size and scope. Exit question one: She was instantly forgiven for supporting amnesty and TARP. No biggie on this either, right? Exit question two: I’m getting yet another demerit on my conservative permanent record for even pointing this out, aren’t I?
Update: Commenters are yelling at me for (1) knocking Palin for supporting TARP when I supported it myself and (2) supposedly misrepresenting her position on the bill. First: I’m not knocking her for supporting TARP. See, e.g., NRO’s David Gitlitz on how TARP might well have saved the financial system. I brought it up here to illustrate how she gets a pass for heresies that lesser conservatives get hung for. Second: Quoting from above, “In fairness, there’s a difference between supporting a bill on the merits and agreeing to accept funds from a bill you oppose that’s destined to pass anyway.” I.e. I wasn’t suggesting she loves the bill on the merits, or that she’s suddenly a fan of trillion-dollar spending outlays. My point was that, like Jindal and unlike Sanford (maybe), she’s willing to accept federal spending as a way of kickstarting the economy provided it’s directed to “good” projects. I thought the grassroots conservative position on economic recovery was for the feds to either do nothing or do it all through tax cuts. Am I mistaken?
For the record, here’s a statement from her office dated January 12 emphasizing her opposition to earmarks in the stimulus. And here’s the conclusion of her letter of January 7 to Alaska’s congressional delegation urging fiscal responsibility in the final bill:
Although it is beyond my purview as Governor, I also urge you to consider how the economic stimulus package will affect the national debt and the future economic health of the country. The need for economic stimulus should not become an excuse for the continuation of the unsound policies of the past. The nation’s economy will never achieve long-term stability if we continue borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars from foreign countries, all the while Simultaneously sending huge amounts of money overseas to OPEC countries for oil that could be produced domestically. In this regard, I am astounded by amounts of a trillion dollars and more that are currently being discussed in some quarters.
I believe our nation is truly at an economic crossroads. Properly constructed, the economic stimulus package will greatly assist in sending our country down the right road. Without question, you will be called upon to make very difficult decisions on behalf of Alaska and the nation, and I want to assure you of the cooperation of my administration in achieving the best possible result.

You guys are as anti-Palin as some posters here are pro-Palin and all for the same reason. To effect her ability to run again and her status in the Republican Party.
If you guys on the other side really cared about incompetence, you’d be railing against a very poorly executed start by the one.
hawkdriver on February 1, 2009 at 11:04 PM
hawk, the look of the thing is fine. I was referring to the content. joey sounds like a lovestruck teenager. He’s president of the Palin fan club. It’s embarrassing. Sounds like my 13 year old niece when she talks about the Jonas Brothers.

You must go through a lot of Chapstick.

All I do is point out the way she has governed, nothing more. If that effects “her ability to run again and her status in the Republican Party”, that’s her problem.
lowandslow on February 1, 2009 at 11:07 PM
joey, you obviously. You talk lame ass trash about welfare and food stamps and then back away from your own junk. Let me guess: you also have a JTP fan site, right?
dakine on February 1, 2009 at 11:07 PM
That’s what true believers in a candidate do. Let her have a shot and see where the chips fall. I’m sure there’ll be more sites like his if her star keeps rising. You have to admit, the Obama sites were nothing short of idol worshipping. It was pretty nauseating.
Dakine, I never really saw or asked, but are you an Obama supporter?
hawkdriver on February 1, 2009 at 11:08 PM

Rooney actually endorsed Obama and campaigned for him along with one other Steeler player. Strap on your airsickness bag; here’s a public letter from Rooney dated April 14, 2008:
Rooney is also the namesake of an NFL rule requiring teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head coaching positions before making a final decision — or face a fine. As a black man who finds affirmative action patronizing, I am against such measures. Rooney made the right decision in hiring Mike Tomlin over former Steeler coach Whisenhunt; would have chosen a white man if his rule was not in place? Former Raider coach Art Shell — who crapped out in spectacular fashion in his second stint as Raiders coach — says yes:

hawk, I was a McCain guy going back pre-2000. His decision to run with Palin caused me much heartburn and I thought it was a huge mistake. Wasn’t enough to cause me to sit out the election, so I voted McCain/Palin, but… Absolutely, the Obama worship sites were hugely embarrassing to those folks. It’s even harder to stomach when so-called conservatives act in a similar fashion with respect to Palin. joey and his site are a joke.

Definition of “troll” according to our resident geniuses joey and Kaptain A: anybody who doesn’t think that Gov. Palin is the second coming.
dakine on February 1, 2009 at 11:19 PM
I got that. I was a Romney fan but I went with your guy for the election. I just think we do the Dems job for them by going after each other a little too much. If Joey is going to back Palin, let him and see where it goes. If his site is a little corny and he talks her up, let him. I’ll respect other folks ideas of who they post about if they respect him. If she emerges as the front runner, I’ll go with her. If it’s Jindal or whoever, I’ll back them. I hope there’s a ton of sites touting the up-side of all of our guys/gals. The MSM will make sure the ugly babies we need to know about are reported.
hawkdriver on February 1, 2009 at 11:19 PM
Only in your mind. You and ramrocks defend her tax increase and the way she expanded the size of her government while interfering in private enterprise and you claim you made me look like a fool? You’re freak’n delusional.
lowandslow on February 1, 2009 at 11:19 PM

Joey, do you post at Conservatives4Palin.com? It’s become my mainstay in just two days, replcaing Hot Air.
promachus on February 1, 2009 at 11:23 PM
Again, where are the numbers? Saying this or that governor “expanded the government” and “increased taxes” is meaningless by itself.
ddrintn on February 1, 2009 at 11:23 PM
That’s a very generalized and sophomoric comeback. It was an honest question. I just wondered who you support. It relates to your Palin opinion, in “my” opinion.
I can’t ask you a question? I asked dakine and he gave a civil answer.
May I ask again?
hawkdriver on February 1, 2009 at 11:23 PM
Oh, I hear ya hawk. I should just shut up, but guys like joey bug the shit out of me. I’m not a “fan” of any of these people. That are politicians, not rock stars. To the joeys of the world it’s like some sort of game or high school social scene. I find it really embarrassing to the conservative movement.

If it gives you any relief, i was a little allergic when we found Gizmo but the cat actually helped me get past a lot of the allergies I think by being being around him. When he was little he would sleep on my lap even through the sniffing and sneezing. No effect at all these days.

hawkdriver on February 1, 2009 at 11:28 PM
I love how people dis this site and say they don’t come here anymore, as they make comments…
as conservatives we must be willing to debate the issues as they come and not just stand in defense of a person because we like them… I love Sarah and I would vote for her in 2012, but that does not mean I agree with all her views. we must be willing to debate these issues on their merit.
as conservatives do we all not agree the way to stimulate the economy is through tax cuts and not government spending?
Kaptain Amerika on February 1, 2009 at 11:28 PM

Would it help if I suggested that the main aim of a political party is to put their guy or gal in power. Having said that,Obamas camp beat the living daylights out of us in the media,so can I suggest that you accept, even grudgingly the fact that Joey’s site serves a purpose?
Im not taking sides in any of this argument but merely suggesting that the conservative movement can humble a bit of the pride in order to further the cause. A bit Machiavellian of me I know, but again we can all see that these sites do offer something rather than having no sites at all.
canditaylor68 on February 1, 2009 at 11:32 PM
you got a whole bunch of beautiful women on that site of yours Joey… albeit one woman.
Kaptain Amerika on February 1, 2009 at 11:34 PM
It really can be confusing here by single posts about whether someone is a Conservative or not. My fellow cat lover Sheebe can tell you that about me. I never thought she was a real Conservative until I got past her criticisms of Palin and the wolf hunting. Just something she felt strongly about and I had her pegged as someone trying to steer votes away from the ticket. She’s a very sweet and sincere poster.
I admit I still lose my temper with the real left-wing trolls but try hard to see eye to eye with anyone who wants to join arms to beat them.

I agree to a point-There were ads running everywhere for Obama donations and information sites-I barely saw any of ours out in cyberspace. Not only did it pull in mega donations but it also made his face known everywhere and thus more people felt comfortable with it.They felt as though they knew that candidate, you could not hit a single site without seeing the ads. This is the media line that I am referring to.
canditaylor68 on February 1, 2009 at 11:41 PM
You know the trolls’ objective is to destroy positive conservative sites. I don’t know why they don’t get banned but it is so obvious that they come here to hijack and to get everyone to descend into fighting and nastiness and then we start losing members. Joey’s content-lush site — Conservatives4Palin.com — is far from a joke; what IS a joke is that Joey is reading reports, finding transcripts, and double checking sources. He’s doing the job the maddog MSM should be doing when instead, they are forwarding false rumors and DNC talking points about Palin.
BTW, dakine, as a “McCain guy” from before the GWB campaign, why don’t you tell me what it is McCain has stood for this past decade without giving yourself whiplash — including his support (in deeds, not words) of Palin.

Allah,
This thread was not one of your finer moments, but I think the problem is not one of malice on your part, but that it wasn’t up to your usually stellar writing and research standards.
You used a question mark. Fine. But you also said “et tu Sarah?” which reinforced the perception that you thought Palin backed the stimulus, and implied that it was an act of backstabbing treachery on her part.
You did not parse the Associated Press story or react to it with the skepticism it deserved. Your only conciliatory statement was this:
But that is based on a false premise which implies that you’re either with the stimulus bill or against it’ and there’s no room to negotiate.
If people took your cultist statement the wrong way it’s because you did not make it clear to whom you were referring. I agree that there are a lot of commenters who refuse to accept any criticism of Palin. I would add that running to Michelle like a tattle-telling toddler is incredibly juvenile, so I don’t blame you for being irritated. However, people were mostly responding to the incorrect and misleading AP story. Wanting the facts to be aired hardly makes someone a cultist, and while it was not your intention to lump all of us into that category, that is how it came across.
I for one enjoy your posts immensely and it would be a shame if you stopped posting about Palin (or anything for that matter). Of course I’m also someone who doesn’t want the leftie trolls to be banned either :)

Well, he must have been banking on the fact that nobody researches Blunt

Blunt didn’t run for re-election, and his father is talking about going toe to toe with McCatguts on the next run, so I’m thinking Matt will run for his father’s house seat and win hands down. his father wins the seat every year by 95% to 5% dems… that’s my district.

No scope yet. I’m looking on line. I shoot the standard rail sights on my Superior Arms AR15.
I like the AIM scopes and sights like we had on our M4s last deployment.
I’m leaning towards this one.

KA I’ll send the whole thing to you on Tuesday. We’re off tomorrow. I saw on your site a “contact in the mean time” address, is that where to mail it?
hawkdriver on February 2, 2009 at 12:23 AM

One of the posters at my site is in the Air Force and he made a nice post on Track Palin and his unit in Iraq:

Matt Blunt said he was stepping out of politics to be with his family and that he believed that a politician needed to go back into the private sector from time to time to stay connected to the people, but there was rumors of an affair that would come out if he ran. but this taking over his father seat could have been the plan all along. McCatguts beat out Talent for our jr Senate seat and we’ve been shafted ever since.
Matt kinda screwed us by not running for re-election, we have a pretty conservative democrat who was attorney general and he won the Governor’s seat easily.

LowandSlow then told us about Matt Blunt being the most
You’re lying, you asked to name one Governor who has governed more as a fiscal conservative and I gave you one.

I am.
KA too. The interview was done about a month ago with a SFC that flies in my MEDEVAC unit. He was awarded the Silver Star by President Bush last summer during All American week here at Ft. Bragg. It was for bravery under fire while being hoisted down to a ground unit that was ambushed near a village were they had been conducting a Shera, (village counsel visit)
The article was written from his own AAR and the interview in between him and I but you could make it from your site. I also had pictures of him taken during the interview.
