Ultimate heart-ache: Palin supports the stimulus? Update: Or does she?

posted at 2:00 pm on February 1, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

The same stimulus that head RINO John McCain opposes for its porkiness?

Most Republican governors have broken with their GOP colleagues in Congress and are pushing for passage of President Barack Obama’s economic aid plan that would send billions to states for education, public works and health care.

Their state treasuries drained by the financial crisis, governors would welcome the money from Capitol Hill, where GOP lawmakers are more skeptical of Obama’s spending priorities.

The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, planned to meet in Washington this weekend with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and other senators to press for her state’s share of the package.

In fairness, there’s a difference between supporting a bill on the merits and agreeing to accept funds from a bill you oppose that’s destined to pass anyway. Jindal, for one, freely admits that he’d have voted against the bill in Congress but will take the money to help Louisiana. No sense standing on principle when it won’t do any good, right?

Right?

The most outspoken critic has been South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who has warned for months of a steep spike in inflation and a severely weakened dollar if Obama’s plan passed. His state is on track to receive $2.1 billion of the stimulus money; Sanford has not yet said whether he would accept it.

“It’s incumbent on me as one of the nation’s governors to speak out against what I believe is ultimately incredibly harmful to the economy, to taxpayers and to the worth of the U.S. dollar,” Sanford said in an interview. “This plan is a huge mistake and is going to prolong and deepen this recession.”…

Associates say Sanford, who recently was elected chairman of the Republican Governors Association, has been disappointed in how few of his GOP colleagues have joined him in speaking out against the size and scope of Obama’s plan.

See Flip’s latest graphic for a handle on that size and scope. Exit question one: She was instantly forgiven for supporting amnesty and TARP. No biggie on this either, right? Exit question two: I’m getting yet another demerit on my conservative permanent record for even pointing this out, aren’t I?

Update: Commenters are yelling at me for (1) knocking Palin for supporting TARP when I supported it myself and (2) supposedly misrepresenting her position on the bill. First: I’m not knocking her for supporting TARP. See, e.g., NRO’s David Gitlitz on how TARP might well have saved the financial system. I brought it up here to illustrate how she gets a pass for heresies that lesser conservatives get hung for. Second: Quoting from above, “In fairness, there’s a difference between supporting a bill on the merits and agreeing to accept funds from a bill you oppose that’s destined to pass anyway.” I.e. I wasn’t suggesting she loves the bill on the merits, or that she’s suddenly a fan of trillion-dollar spending outlays. My point was that, like Jindal and unlike Sanford (maybe), she’s willing to accept federal spending as a way of kickstarting the economy provided it’s directed to “good” projects. I thought the grassroots conservative position on economic recovery was for the feds to either do nothing or do it all through tax cuts. Am I mistaken?

For the record, here’s a statement from her office dated January 12 emphasizing her opposition to earmarks in the stimulus. And here’s the conclusion of her letter of January 7 to Alaska’s congressional delegation urging fiscal responsibility in the final bill:

Although it is beyond my purview as Governor, I also urge you to consider how the economic stimulus package will affect the national debt and the future economic health of the country. The need for economic stimulus should not become an excuse for the continuation of the unsound policies of the past. The nation’s economy will never achieve long-term stability if we continue borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars from foreign countries, all the while Simultaneously sending huge amounts of money overseas to OPEC countries for oil that could be produced domestically. In this regard, I am astounded by amounts of a trillion dollars and more that are currently being discussed in some quarters.

I believe our nation is truly at an economic crossroads. Properly constructed, the economic stimulus package will greatly assist in sending our country down the right road. Without question, you will be called upon to make very difficult decisions on behalf of Alaska and the nation, and I want to assure you of the cooperation of my administration in achieving the best possible result.

Allah, then please consider that just maybe the problem isn’t everyone else. From what I’ve seen in your years of posting, I think you have a real problem with religious intolerance (and perhaps even religious hatred). That stuff is no good, and you shouldn’t want to spread the poison.

As a governor, getting free money from the feds is never turned away. Never.
So parts of the stimulus that would benefit her state would be welcomed. That’s just being pragmatic. However, there is enough crap in the stimulus bill that’s not stimulus, but just spending to make work. Whereas some of the stimulus is not stimulus at all, but just outright nonsense.

They need to go back and rethink tax cuts, rather than spending what we don’t have.

I disagree with her on the federal ban on gay marriage; she should be consistent on that issue, if she’s going to call herself a “federalist.” Gay marriage should be left to the states like abortion.

She is nowhere near Huckabee on immigration. He tried to give tuition breaks to illegals as a pander to Walmart. Palin has just said she thinks rounding up and deporting all the illegals is extreme. There’s no reason to offend Latinos during an election, too. Every politician tones it down on the issue, because there are many personal stories.

Palin and Huckabee are worlds apart. Plus, he comes off as shifty while she’s got a much sunnier disposition.

Huck didn’t support the surge. She did, at least on the campaign trail. Sarah must have done something to endear herself to libertarians while huckis an abomination to them. That should make them real different from each other.

it’s clear that you’ve created a strawman, many strawmen, while dealing with Palin.

And her support for amnesty is something you dreamed up , just like today. She actually said ” not total amnesty” in her interview with Spanish televsion. You turned that into not total amnesty? OMG Sarah palin supports amnesty for illegals. It’s only fair to ask/wait for the details of what her plan would be which you’ve never done.

The 100-yard pick notwithstanding, his performance tonight seals it; an Arena Leaguer who only got to start at QB in the NFL because the Nos. 1 & 2 QB’s on an also-ran team got hurt in preseason play will be in the Hall of Fame.

Let me interrupt this post to say two words to Dan Rooney, who invoked the name of Barack Obama within seconds of accepting the Lombardi Trophy.

I checked out your sad little blog:

Since the election, one which I feel seals the final downfall of the ideal of liberty on which this country was founded, I have “turned off” a lot of things in my life. Fox News (and all such similar political programming, MSNBC, CNN, etc.) is first on my list.
I have also turned off all political discussions with friends and family. What’s the point of arguing something that cannot be resolved. Perseverance is a value, but futility is simply idiocy.
I have also turned off four of my children. The awful transgression of our so-called natural rights, unalienable and freely given to us by God, in what our politicians have laughingly named “Family Court” is finally too much for me to bear.
As I occasionally listen to the farcical and blatant communistic coverup of the Blagoviech Affair to protect our first American Tyrant I am confident I made the right decision.
Liberty is dead.

Why don’t you just go ahead and turn us off, too?

dakine on February 1, 2009 at 10:37 PM

Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.

promachus on February 1, 2009 at 10:38 PM

And predictably, here’s joey faithfully defending his pretend girlfriend.

dakine on February 1, 2009 at 10:39 PM

This is the garbage AP is talking about, Palin didn’t cut taxes or spending, ever. And she has no energy plan. Where do you guys get this?

jcila on February 1, 2009 at 10:33 PM

No need to be sorry. I am a Conservative and I feel the same way. I will be calling them tomorrow before I go to work. That is all we can do. They are ignoring e mails. The Stimulus isn’t a done deal. I hope it never is a done deal. Err the Pork Bill is what it is.

So what is it? Drill baby drill? That’s a slogan, not a plan.

chunderroad on February 1, 2009 at 10:35 PM

You’ve shown where I was wrong, just thrown out insults. Show us where’s she’s cut spending and lowered taxes, show us.

lowandslow on February 1, 2009 at 10:41 PM

My point was that, like Jindal and unlike Sanford (maybe), she’s willing to accept federal spending as a way of kickstarting the economy provided it’s directed to “good” projects. I thought the grassroots conservative position on economic recovery was for the feds to either do nothing or do it all through tax cuts. Am I mistaken?

I haven’t had time to read the comments but this is my take:

Drill here, Drill now is the best infrastructure/stimulus package we could devise. So to the extent that the Feds help states with mega-expensive things like pipelines which benefit everyone in the country, or direct money to the states for national defense items, or slash regulations which prevent access to our natural resources, I support Fed involvement.

If we end up with more oil and natural gas flowing then that is a huge, permanent stimulus to the economy and benefits our national security.

Given Palin’s obvious flaws and the primal rage with which she’s defended by many, I get the feeling she’s a lot of people’s secret gf.

It’s like, I think we all dream of making love to her on a tropical shore but you’ve got to be practical.

I agree. The syntax in Rooney’s sentence was weird. I heard it as saying Obama is a Steelers fan, but I guess he is now.

sheebe on February 1, 2009 at 10:43 PM

Drill Baby Drill is not a Sarah Plain quote directly I don’t believe. She’s a proponent for completing the natural gas pipeline and opening a modest portion of a non-vegatated portion of ANWR to the surface gear and facilities necessary to drill the oil there.

We still need updated refineries and off shore drilling in the Carolinas and shale conversion.

I look at the extreme defense of Palin as a way of fighting the liberals where they live. Sort of like going to the Middle East to fight terrorists. You fight them where you find them.

And you normally find the most deranged liberals on a Plain thread right here on good old Hot Air. God knows there wasn’t a lib to be found defending his PressSec on the BlackWater Info Blackout. Or his Iran concession. Hmm, or his rendition concession.

But Holy Crap on a Palin thread you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a liberal troll.

hawkdriver on February 1, 2009 at 10:51 PM

I wonder, do the Palins pay their taxes?

Boy, that head is full of nonsense, isn’t it? And there’s no editor on duty.

RalphyBoy on February 1, 2009 at 10:06 PM

Always full of nonsense. But seeing as how the Palins aren’t Democrats in search of a Cabinet post, I’m sure they do.

Did Michael Steele come up with at the convention?

joey24007 on February 1, 2009 at 10:53 PM

Palin’s energy plan was described by the LA Times ambitious and exciting:

Anyway, our colleague Margot Roosevelt, over at the Greenspace blog, reports that Palin has just unveiled a statewide green energy plan. It would do even more than California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 33% renewable electricity plan by 2020.

Palin’s new plan would get the utilities in oil-rich Alaska to produce 50% of their power through renewable sources. She’ll introduce the legislation during the current legislative session, she says. (Obama, btw, has suggested 25% by 2025.) Margot’s got the new Alaskan details.

joey, just checked out your blog. Looks like something you might see from a fan of one of the American Idol finalists. Seriously embarrassing, especially from somebody who purports to be a conservative.

chunderroad on February 1, 2009 at 10:46 PM

Defend it? Her budgets have increased every year she was Governor, hell even the operating budget she submitted this year, when she’s facing billion dollar deficits increased. As for taxes, the only tax she cut was a temporary gasoline/diesel tax, her ACES was a massive tax increase no matter how you look at it. That’s just the way it is, to claim she cut spending and taxes is just not true.

Oh for crying out loud, that’s her plan for Alaska. She could easily accomplish that by building some hydroelectric damns but she won’t even do that.

I came here looking for a write up on Sarah’s State of the State address expecting to see one because Allah always posts about her…I saw nothing because of course he posted nothing yet that would have been a great debate and a lot could have been gained from it. So why didn’t he?

Once you get the feds money in your hand.
You get to spend it however you want.

However, if you have a senator bring in pork. It’s hard not to be against it.
