Ultimate heart-ache: Palin supports the stimulus? Update: Or does she?
posted at 2:00 pm on February 1, 2009 by Allahpundit
The same stimulus that head RINO John McCain opposes for its porkiness?
Most Republican governors have broken with their GOP colleagues in Congress and are pushing for passage of President Barack Obama’s economic aid plan that would send billions to states for education, public works and health care.
Their state treasuries drained by the financial crisis, governors would welcome the money from Capitol Hill, where GOP lawmakers are more skeptical of Obama’s spending priorities.
The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, planned to meet in Washington this weekend with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and other senators to press for her state’s share of the package.
In fairness, there’s a difference between supporting a bill on the merits and agreeing to accept funds from a bill you oppose that’s destined to pass anyway. Jindal, for one, freely admits that he’d have voted against the bill in Congress but will take the money to help Louisiana. No sense standing on principle when it won’t do any good, right?
Right?
The most outspoken critic has been South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who has warned for months of a steep spike in inflation and a severely weakened dollar if Obama’s plan passed. His state is on track to receive $2.1 billion of the stimulus money; Sanford has not yet said whether he would accept it.
“It’s incumbent on me as one of the nation’s governors to speak out against what I believe is ultimately incredibly harmful to the economy, to taxpayers and to the worth of the U.S. dollar,” Sanford said in an interview. “This plan is a huge mistake and is going to prolong and deepen this recession.”…
Associates say Sanford, who recently was elected chairman of the Republican Governors Association, has been disappointed in how few of his GOP colleagues have joined him in speaking out against the size and scope of Obama’s plan.
See Flip’s latest graphic for a handle on that size and scope. Exit question one: She was instantly forgiven for supporting amnesty and TARP. No biggie on this either, right? Exit question two: I’m getting yet another demerit on my conservative permanent record for even pointing this out, aren’t I?
Update: Commenters are yelling at me for (1) knocking Palin for supporting TARP when I supported it myself and (2) supposedly misrepresenting her position on the bill. First: I’m not knocking her for supporting TARP. See, e.g., NRO’s David Gitlitz on how TARP might well have saved the financial system. I brought it up here to illustrate how she gets a pass for heresies that lesser conservatives get hung for. Second: Quoting from above, “In fairness, there’s a difference between supporting a bill on the merits and agreeing to accept funds from a bill you oppose that’s destined to pass anyway.” I.e. I wasn’t suggesting she loves the bill on the merits, or that she’s suddenly a fan of trillion-dollar spending outlays. My point was that, like Jindal and unlike Sanford (maybe), she’s willing to accept federal spending as a way of kickstarting the economy provided it’s directed to “good” projects. I thought the grassroots conservative position on economic recovery was for the feds to either do nothing or do it all through tax cuts. Am I mistaken?
For the record, here’s a statement from her office dated January 12 emphasizing her opposition to earmarks in the stimulus. And here’s the conclusion of her letter of January 7 to Alaska’s congressional delegation urging fiscal responsibility in the final bill:
Although it is beyond my purview as Governor, I also urge you to consider how the economic stimulus package will affect the national debt and the future economic health of the country. The need for economic stimulus should not become an excuse for the continuation of the unsound policies of the past. The nation’s economy will never achieve long-term stability if we continue borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars from foreign countries, all the while Simultaneously sending huge amounts of money overseas to OPEC countries for oil that could be produced domestically. In this regard, I am astounded by amounts of a trillion dollars and more that are currently being discussed in some quarters.
I believe our nation is truly at an economic crossroads. Properly constructed, the economic stimulus package will greatly assist in sending our country down the right road. Without question, you will be called upon to make very difficult decisions on behalf of Alaska and the nation, and I want to assure you of the cooperation of my administration in achieving the best possible result.

I don’t like the ‘recovery’ bill either, but I’m going to take my check anyway(if it comes)and donate it to Sarah or whomever runs in four years. In the meantime , it can sit in a bank CD and draw interest(which may not remain small given the coming inflation). Yes, I suppose I am one of the cultists too because I really like Sarah. But, I’m willing to support any sane and reasonable GOP candidate in 2012.

you’d think you monkeys would appreciate Allah’s willingness to debate you in the comments, instead of insulting him and trying to deride his intentions… I take him at his word on his intentions and he’s right about the way you all hold Sarah above reproach, I support her in a lot of issues, but not all, she’s only human people, and she’s not your mother… calm down.
Kaptain Amerika on February 1, 2009 at 8:08 PM
I love Sarah. LOVE her. And I think she’s our only hope, right now.
But I don’t see anything in that press release that isn’t in Allah’s post. She’s still just saying that Alaska isn’t getting enough from the stimulus, not that she opposes it.
And I understand that. She can’t stop the stimulus, and if her people need the money, I think she needs to stifle her real opinion and take all she can grab. (As much as it makes me want to puke, to say that.) Better that Alaska gets money for education or mass transit, than have it go to freakin’ STD prevention.
After all, her people are paying for it too.

Fuquay Steve on February 1, 2009 at 8:19 PM
No. I support her but never ‘asked’ anybody to support her. I did say go to TeamSarah IF you are a supporter of hers. As a supporter, it is not like Obama. She’s human, not a deity like Obama. I am Catholic and worship the Trinity. Now there may be people who are fans of Sarah who have substituted her in place of God, but I have yet to find one. Most think of Sarah as a Champion, like the QB on your favorite team. Many Obama people raise him up too high like a god because many are not religious and Obama is being put into that gaping hole in their psyches rather than the true God.
There is a difference between the supporters of each. I don’t believe Sarah is gonna pay my utilities bill and mortgage/rent payment.

OK. I want to pour oil on fire. You missed the part about grave concerns. Sarah Palin has grave concerns about the stimulus and her press release doesn’t contradict what we the cultists have been saying all along. See, there’s regular infrastructure funding and then there’s this once ina lifetime stimulus. She doesn’t support the latter but for her, the former comes packaged with the latter, so she has to make sure doesn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

The point of the alternate headlines I’ve posted is to focus on our current leaders – not our future ones. There is so much crap being missed by focusing on Sarah – leave her alone until 2011 and keep your eye on the ball. I finally caught on the problem with Sarah’s answers. We all want her to wax eloquent on pet abstractions. She really answers in concrete. We ask her about federalism and she says fill this pothole and don’t build that bridge. Hence, we assume she hasn’t read Hayek or Paine or Brooke. She may well have read obscure but no less conservatives. Remember that Westbrook Pegler guy?
Yeah, it’s time to start addressing national level questions too. She’s speaking at CPAC, so that gives her some opportunity to reveal more of her philosophy and I hope she’d plow through that.
Till then, let’s not read too much in little short bites.
I guess this doesn’t have anything to do with what’s going on heres but I just want to calm things down. Oh, I am really sad that Jim2 has been kicked out. What’s a cultist to do when a head-priest is not available?

What’s weird is that I’m on perfectly cordial terms with our commenters on every other subject, including religion. It’s only when I criticize Palin that I get treated like I work for the New York Times. I could write a post saying, “I admire much of Christ’s teachings, but I think his view of hell is nutty” and all I’d get by response is, “Interesting view, AP, but…” But if I say, “I admire much of Palin’s policies, but I think her view of amnesty is nutty,” I’d get, “WHY IS THIS LIBTARD WRITING FOR HOT AIR, MICHELLE?”

I am a grassroots consertive and I don’t any bailouts. What I support first is cutting all the pork out of what we all ready have going. Then I support changing the education and welfare system. There are billions being abused there. Start by looking at the current books. Then if only then there is nothing you can do I say some sort of stimulus but it would be very limited to producing our own oil, starting a small business, and cutting the capital gains tax. Look what is going wrong first, fix it and then go from there.
Brat4life on February 1, 2009 at 8:44 PM
No, we generally don’t, unless it is wartime.
But, from a governor’s position, they can’t stop it so get the money you can for the best needs/causes. Make the best of a spendthrift situation.
But, yes, conservatives don’t Keynesian spend in peacetime. Bush did that after backing out wartime marginal spending. That’s one minus on his record.

My $.02 is that, as a Christian, I know you’re atheist background. You often seem to be respectful of religion, even if poking fun or asking questions. The “atheist-Christian” dialogue/distance is also built into the equation.
With Palin, the repetition and idea that we’re reading a conservative site makes the (IMO) unfair snark more egregious. E.G., in this post the casual reader would see “OMG! Sarah’s pushing hard for the trillion-dollar package!” Reading the article, knowing a little of her history with AK budgets and googling a few articles shows it ain’t necessarily so.
Add that in to the media history of Trig trutherism, McCain staff backstabbing, etc. and nerves are a bit raw.
Which leads to the question, Why is AP doing this? And quite frequently, too.
FWIW.
cs89 on February 1, 2009 at 8:51 PM
Yeah, now that all cultists have been kicked out you can take cover with your fanboys and act all coy.
I think many cultists have explained why they go nuclear on you. Even though we are all cultists, we have our own reasons but I’ll give the general culty consensus. It’s because we’ve been through a most vicious camspaign where we saw a decent politician being absolutely vilified like no one before with no pretense of even common courtesy accorded to public figures. That’s why when you misrepresent Sarah and load your posts with snark and then label us cultists, we’ll blow up.
You throw bombs at people and then complain that people are mad at you.
There’s a difference between expressing an opinion(like yours on atheism) and misrepresenting something or someone(as you do frequently with Sarah) and I guess we’ve grown to suspect that you’ve an underhand agenda. Not fair? By your own logic, you should be the one to clear that impression up by being nice to Cuda, just as you expect us cultists to expect all non-culty behavior even though you’ve done all you could to encourage just such a behavior.

hawk, my comment was in response to your MediaHack post. He strikes me as a smart guy, and I’m sure he is capable of understanding your political philosophy and worldview. Your comment to him is what I’m used to seeing from social con fundamentalists, who are poison to the conservative movement IMHO. Sorry for going ad hominem on ya.

Iran will not take over the US and institute shariah. No one ever said that here that I recollect.
But Iran may have nuclear weapons soon, and they already think Obama is weak. If they were to attack Israel, I doubt Obama would do a thing about it.
As for shariah, look at Europe. The Arch Bishop of Canterbury thinks England should allow shariah to co-exist with British law. Geert Wilders is being prosecuted for hate crimes for simply voicing his opinion about Islam. Within 20 years, if birth patterns and immigration continue as is, Europe will be a predominately Muslim continent.
No, we have nothing to worry about.

I think it will last. I just want her to be the conservative everyone thinks she is. Notice, I never knock her for advocating drilling. Because she’s 100% right on that.

Back in January 2008 when the article featuring the “NEW LEADERS OF THE GOP interwebs” in Campaigns and Elections Magazine which featured the star trek photoshop of Erik Erickson of RedState, Pat Ruffini of Townhall, Robert Bluey of Human Events, and DAVID ALL of nothing.
It ALL became crystal clear (so to speak) and I made it my business to find out WHY this David All guy would be featured with these other “giants of GOP blogdom”. Because he’s Allahpundit!

Many of us supported TARP in principle, though the way it was pitched was highly suspect. But the need to inject liquidity into the banks and unfreeze credit was legitimate.
Of course, there was no oversight, and the funds were never allocated as they were supposed to be. So, it looks like we got rolled. This “stimulus” is a joke.
There is a time and place for Keynesian economics, but in a crisis, you stick to tried and true methods.
What is so weird about this Palin argument is that she has not said she supports the stimulus, and she’s a governor. It doesn’t matter, since she doesn’t vote on it. Her state is basically a large national park that relies on the govt.
Of course she’s going to ask for infrastructure funding when that is the greatest challenge her state faces now, with oil prices dropped and already severely cut budgets. The feds should direct money her way, since her projects are crucial to the lower 48.

Simply incredible. It has been a few hours since I was here and we’ve gone from the “Don’t you DARE criticize Sarah” to the “Allah Pundit is a leftie Palin hater”.
One would think that the self professed conservatives would actually have the class to avoid that type of behavior. Says to me one of two things are likely; (a) poster is a fair weather conservative at best who gets petty and childish if their opinion or favorite pol is criticized or (b) they are dirty leftist plant sent here to upset the business of the true conservatives….
And you guys wondered why we lost the election…..

Grooooooan. Dude, I swear to you on a stack of Bibles and a stack of “god is not Great” books that I’m not David All. I goofed on one of his videos a long time ago, although I can’t find the post now. If you’re really paranoid about this, e-mail MKH and ask her. She knows me and All and she’ll assure you we’re different people.
