Super Bowl Chat and Open Thread: Steelers vs Cardinals
posted at 11:00 am on February 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It’s the end of the line for the NFL season, the playoffs, and the weeks of easy open-thread posting here at Hot Air for one lucky blogger whose team went farther than he’d hoped early on. It’s also going to be the end of the road for the amazing run of the Arizona Cardinals, who spent the regular season getting blown out by Philly, New England, and the Jets, and then besting Philly, Atlanta, and surprisingly Carolina to get to their first-ever Super Bowl. They’ve turned into an impressive team, no doubt about it, and will give Pittsburgh a tough time.
However, in the end, the Steelers have been here before and have a defense unlike the Cards have seen this year. They have also shown that they know how to take advantage of an off week, being the only bye team in this playoff cycle to advance to the championship games. They’re rested, they’re experienced, and they will have too many weapons for Arizona to handle. Since I gave Hugh Hewitt ten points and the Cards, I’ll predict a 28-17 victory for the Steelers today. And the last time I ever gave anyone ten points in a Steelers game, Pittsburgh beat the LA Rams in the 1980 Super Bowl … by eleven points.
I’ll have family over today for a Super Bowl party, on the new HD TV system I bought myself for Christmas this year, so I won’t be live-blogging — but that doesn’t mean we can’t do live chat during the game! If Jazz Shaw has forgiven me for giving his lovely wife the idea of torturing Jazz with the Mamma Mia DVD last night, perhaps he’ll moderate the chat room — or if not, maybe he’ll just insult me as often as possible from it during the game. Either way, we’ll cheer the culmination of a great season by two surprising teams tonight, talk about the awful commercials, and celebrate the fact that Hot Air will continue its ongoing mission regardless of the momentary stumbles and obstacles, thanks to The Boss … and not the one performing at halftime tonight. Be sure to join us!
Update: I forgot to mention that people need to register for free at Ustream to participate in our live-chat sessions. (And if the log-in prompt doesn’t come up in the chat box below, use this link instead.)

Okay, back to the “America’s Next Top Model” marathon on Oxygen! WOOHOO
SouthernGent on February 1, 2009 at 10:12 PM
If you have any doubt the officials are in Pitt’s pocket you need to join the democrats. Absolutely pathetic!
Hammerhead on February 1, 2009 at 10:12 PM
Why does life suck so bad? I hate the Steelers.
2009 isn’t shaping up to be a good year, either.
HYTEAndy on February 1, 2009 at 10:13 PM
Bad defense on a crucial drive. Why can’t three people guard one receiver.
Zaire67 on February 1, 2009 at 10:13 PM
I know…had they called the 10 holding calls against the Cards that were not called….the Steelers would have won by 20
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:13 PM
Oh, c’mon. Tell me Warner’s arm wasn’t going forward. Geez.
Plus, 15 yards on the “champs” after the play? Fucking Pittsburgh is, and always has been, the most whored-up and classless team I’ve ever watched.
Blow me, Pittsburgh. The better team lost tonight. Blow me.
wccawa on February 1, 2009 at 10:14 PM
be a steeler fan. it don’t suck.
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:14 PM
The Patriots are close.
HYTEAndy on February 1, 2009 at 10:14 PM
I wonder if we just saw Warner’s last game. His stats were better than Big Ben’s. That bully Harrison better not be MVP.
Terrie on February 1, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Oh, yes it does. You’re just retarded enough not to know how much.
wccawa on February 1, 2009 at 10:15 PM
WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOT!!!!!!!…GREAT GAME!!!!,..even with some pretty crappy calls,….I’m sure tomorrow every inch will get a second look,..but tonight it’s the STEELERS BABY!!!!!!!
christene on February 1, 2009 at 10:15 PM
I’m a Cowboys fan, so I didn’t have a dog in this fight. When the referee staff gets two calls overturned due to challenge, that doesn’t speak well of their on-field calls.
Slublog on February 1, 2009 at 10:15 PM
= bandwagon.
Just like the Gators.
HYTEAndy on February 1, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Agreed.
wccawa on February 1, 2009 at 10:15 PM
And if the refs had stayed out of the game the Card would hve won by 20…..who’d da thunk it.
Congrats to the Steelers……….ugly game refs…..
Rovin on February 1, 2009 at 10:16 PM
What a Game!!!
I was dead wrong but loved it, the pinnacle of football greatness!
abobo on February 1, 2009 at 10:16 PM
Classy ……….sarc
whine on ….. so many holds against harrison not called and you haters always have an excuse. how about they defend holmes in the endzone…enjoy
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:16 PM
There were quite a few horrendous calls in this game – but lets give credit to the STeelers – they had the toughest schedule in the league this season and they won.
But the Cardinals showed that they belonged on that field – they never gave up even when they were down by 13 points and faced the best defense in the league – I feel terrible for Kurt Warner. But he played the game with the heart of a champion. Just as many on the Cards did.
The Cards would be wise to re-sign him, but something tells me that Warner will call it quits. Something also tells me that he will not cause the retirement ruckus that Brett Favre has been causing for the last 4 seasons and is all set to do it one more time.
Congrats, Ed. Your team won.
nagee76 on February 1, 2009 at 10:16 PM
STEELERS 6 TIME WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!
STARTING THE RINGS ON THE OTHER HAND NOW!
Travis on February 1, 2009 at 10:16 PM
Right foot wasn’t down after the last touchdown. Notice how NBC showed the replay once then went back to lousy angles? And the last play, how was that not the arm being in forward motion? The ball even released forward. Ridiculous. Now Seattle and Arizona fans can start a support group.
Pitt sucks!
Hammerhead on February 1, 2009 at 10:17 PM
Yeah dude, totally loose sh** on the refs part! *_* = WTF!!
abobo on February 1, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Wow, what a terrible way to end the game. That was clearly an incomplete pass. Sure, the Cards would have almost certainly lost anyway, but that was a *bad* call.
Not a fan of either, but it throws a damper on an otherwise great game.
On a side note, why do team always play prevent when trying to hold a one score lead at the end of the game?
18-1 on February 1, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:18 PM
I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I hoped Phoenix would win. Too bad they couldn’t have stopped that last td and go into overtime.
Congrats Steelers!
Bambi on February 1, 2009 at 10:19 PM
hilarious…get your eyes checked
losers always trying to tarnish the winners
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:20 PM
I’m actually a Ravens fan myself. But if your team loses the Championship game, it’s some consolation if that team goes on to win the Super Bowel. Or something like that. Anyway, it’s time to start on my Income taxes. Maybe I’ll use my refund to buy a crying towel.
Zaire67 on February 1, 2009 at 10:20 PM
Your momma ever tell you 2 wrongs =/= a right?

….and as if on cue the sore losers and unhappy haters start complaining about the refs. Boo hoo. You sound like leftists…got to penalize excellence. Must suck to go through life like that.
GOT SIX!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers (again), the best franchise in the NFL.
Dreadnought on February 1, 2009 at 10:20 PM

Roethlisberger should be the MVP. His arm won this game.

what’s up w/ that Obama comment? are you looney Rooney?
jgapinoy on February 1, 2009 at 10:24 PM
I totally give my respects to P’burg in spite of the bad calls and not as a way of rationalizing some of the dumbest holds (by the Cards) I’ve ever seen in a super bowl!
abobo on February 1, 2009 at 10:24 PM
Rooney, please shut up on Obama! Mike Tomlin, pure class!!

Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Holmes’ catch was awsome 64, (I didnt know your were reffing every hold and callin’ them from your tv.)
Seen much better SB’s without the stripes so involved.
Rovin on February 1, 2009 at 10:26 PM
The Lombardi Trophy resides in Pittsburgh AGAIN! All the crying in the world will not take it away.
Travis on February 1, 2009 at 10:26 PM
I didn’t think this game could top last year…WRONG ON ALL COUNTS!
MVP–Santonio Holmes. 9 catches, 134 yards for the game. I was thinking Big Ben would get it. But one question…WHERE WAS THE CAR?!
BobAnthony on February 1, 2009 at 10:27 PM
Steelers barely beat the Cardinals, friggin’ hilarious. How pathetic.
Christien on February 1, 2009 at 10:27 PM
If you are tired of being immature, why do you continue?
18-1 on February 1, 2009 at 10:28 PM
no surprise the immature haters coming out with their ref comments. hilarious…enjoy….

Someone change Rooney’s diaper. He messed himself over bin hussein Obama.
SouthernGent on February 1, 2009 at 10:28 PM
The ONLY postive was that a member of THE Ohio State Buckyees made the game winning catch. Why must those we love hurt us so bad?
kriscoleman on February 1, 2009 at 10:28 PM
I heard all week how Fitzgerald and Boldin were going to team em up . What happened?
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:29 PM
My only consolation in all this sh** is the thought that McCain is out there somewhere tonight weeping sweet sweet tears of bitter agony, First Obama – now Rothburger, PA screwed him twice so we wouldn’t have too!
abobo on February 1, 2009 at 10:29 PM
“tear em up”

He was robbed.
Slublog on February 1, 2009 at 10:31 PM

just sayin
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:31 PM
Um,..so he did say President obama??….Good grief!!!…who the hell is he trying to score points with!!,….trying to burst my bubble!

Christien on February 1, 2009 at 10:34 PM
Christene-
Exactly. Obama picks steelers for ONE game and Rooney thanks him first??!?? Unbelievable.
conservative pilgrim on February 1, 2009 at 10:34 PM
I first wanted the steelers to win..
but as i watched the cardinals play
they played a better GAME..
they actually showed something i dont see often
Sportmanship and grace..
The steelers won and i congradulate them
But the Cardinals PLAYED a much better game
As better men
With more sportmanship
With more class.
They are the true winners here.
jcila on February 1, 2009 at 10:34 PM
Well at least Ben isn’t quite as overrated as Kordell Stewart was. Pitt fans have that to hold onto.
Hopefully Zona brings back Warner. He shredded Pitt’s D like nobody else this season.
Hammerhead on February 1, 2009 at 10:35 PM

Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:39 PM
My thoughts exactly! Careful though, such sympathy for the defeated can get you labeled an immature, whining, liberal around here. Take care one and all Card fans.
abobo on February 1, 2009 at 10:39 PM
jcila,
Good points. And, do you see Steelers fans here saying “good game” to their opponents? By and large, they are the only thing worse than sore losers–poor winners.
Christien on February 1, 2009 at 10:39 PM
What about ~100 yards in penalties equals “sportsmanship” and “Class” in your universe?
Maybe the penalties were better than harrison’s holding behavior (total douchery), but still, we’re talking about matter of degree.
bilups on February 1, 2009 at 10:39 PM
Agree,..First half not so much, I watched Mall Cop..: o )..Last years game rocked from the coin toss to the final second.
christene on February 1, 2009 at 10:42 PM
Must be Obobo’s and Christien’s mother. lol.
sure does sound liberal
a trophy for everyone…
lmao
Go Steelers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:43 PM
True dat. But then Harrison went from hero to zero with that ugly penalty. He should have been ejected.
Check the stats. Big Ben had nothin’ to do with Harrison’s TD. Warner had more yardage.

cya child…no more of you
Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 10:49 PM
I expect the “blow me” remarks and stupid, paranoid theories about the refs and the whole NFL on sports blogs but I thought the 12 year olds weren’t around here. Hello, people, it is a game — there are no grand conspiracies except in your substandard head. Just human beings working and winning or losing together. If you can’t deal with that, get a good psychotherapist. And don’t watch sports.
IlikedAUH2O on February 1, 2009 at 10:50 PM
