Super Bowl Chat and Open Thread: Steelers vs Cardinals

posted at 11:00 am on February 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

It’s the end of the line for the NFL season, the playoffs, and the weeks of easy open-thread posting here at Hot Air for one lucky blogger whose team went farther than he’d hoped early on.  It’s also going to be the end of the road for the amazing run of the Arizona Cardinals, who spent the regular season getting blown out by Philly, New England, and the Jets, and then besting Philly, Atlanta, and surprisingly Carolina to get to their first-ever Super Bowl.  They’ve turned into an impressive team, no doubt about it, and will give Pittsburgh a tough time.

However, in the end, the Steelers have been here before and have a defense unlike the Cards have seen this year.  They have also shown that they know how to take advantage of an off week, being the only bye team in this playoff cycle to advance to the championship games.  They’re rested, they’re experienced, and they will have too many weapons for Arizona to handle.  Since I gave Hugh Hewitt ten points and the Cards, I’ll predict a 28-17 victory for the Steelers today.  And the last time I ever gave anyone ten points in a Steelers game, Pittsburgh beat the LA Rams in the 1980 Super Bowl … by eleven points.

I’ll have family over today for a Super Bowl party, on the new HD TV system I bought myself for Christmas this year, so I won’t be live-blogging — but that doesn’t mean we can’t do live chat during the game!  If Jazz Shaw has forgiven me for giving his lovely wife the idea of torturing Jazz with the Mamma Mia DVD last night, perhaps he’ll moderate the chat room — or if not, maybe he’ll just insult me as often as possible from it during the game.  Either way, we’ll cheer the culmination of a great season by two surprising teams tonight, talk about the awful commercials, and celebrate the fact that Hot Air will continue its ongoing mission regardless of the momentary stumbles and obstacles, thanks to The Boss … and not the one performing at halftime tonight.  Be sure to join us!

Update: I forgot to mention that people need to register for free at Ustream to participate in our live-chat sessions. (And if the log-in prompt doesn’t come up in the chat box below, use this link instead.)

Cool to see Max Weinberg from Conan up there though.

nickj116 on February 1, 2009 at 8:10 PM

Springsteen just humped the mic.

Guacamole dip’s comin’ back up.

nickj116 on February 1, 2009 at 8:10 PM

You noticed that, too, huh?

uncivilized on February 1, 2009 at 8:11 PM

A great half of football. A little too great.

RightOFLeft on February 1, 2009 at 8:11 PM

Dang, I’d rather have 30 minutes of commercials…

Maquis on February 1, 2009 at 8:11 PM

What is this? Tom Jones does Springsteen?

Ronnie on February 1, 2009 at 8:13 PM

Harrison +1

Springsteen -1

And I used to like him.

Something is missing…Yea, a Cadillac MVP Award.

IlikedAUH2O on February 1, 2009 at 8:15 PM

Springsteen is awful. I thinks it time for retirement.

OldeSCfan on February 1, 2009 at 8:15 PM

Man, the boss sounds like shite!

conservnut on February 1, 2009 at 8:15 PM

There Springsteen is with his very large group of “back up singers” again. Didn’t like it the first time.

DrStock on February 1, 2009 at 8:15 PM

Puppy Bowl is on Animal Planet…much easier on the gag reflex than Bruce.

Maquis on February 1, 2009 at 8:17 PM

Glory days are over Bruce!

conservnut on February 1, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Fitting how the Boss sings about “glory days” passing someone by….hehe

p40tiger on February 1, 2009 at 8:19 PM

I hope they saved some of that bottled oxygen for Springsteen.

Slublog on February 1, 2009 at 8:19 PM

a 3D commercial? Like that’s gonna work for someone like me that didn’t know about the glasses until about 3 this afternoon. sheesh.

uncivilized on February 1, 2009 at 7:59 PM

You did not miss much . I had my glasses from the SI swimsuit issue many years ago and the special effects in the mag were much better than that stuff on tv. Now I may use them tomorrow to watch Chuck. What a great show .

Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 8:20 PM

Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 8:20 PM

Sorry haters…Bruce rocked the shit out of that halftime show.

dakine on February 1, 2009 at 8:20 PM

I don’t know about Disneyland, but Florida definitely sounds like the right state for him. I found Glory Days especially fitting. And I was actually looking forward to him performing.

LevStrauss on February 1, 2009 at 8:21 PM

Some of Bruce’s voice is gone, but the man knows how to put on a show.

Still, I wanted to hear Steven Van Zandt say “Hey, skip.”

He has had better performances in the AC Bus terminal, when his music plays on the speakers.

I like Springsteen, but then again I am from Jersey. And Paterson can knock on Jersey all he wants. We all do.

I’ve never been the biggest Springsteen fan. He sounded about like he did 30 years ago. I reacted as I did back then, waiting for the next thing to happen.

Oh, and I still roll my eyes when he goes into ‘wail mode’ in a song.

klickink.wordpress.com on February 1, 2009 at 8:28 PM

According to a fan, the original guide for the writers said:

We invented “Stardate” to avoid continually mentioning Star Trek’s century (actually about two hundred years from now), and getting into arguments about whether this or that would have developed by then.

Can’t vouch for that personally though…

Dawnsblood on February 1, 2009 at 9:07 PM

I was laughing the entire time, so while it was long, I still loved it.

nickj116 on February 1, 2009 at 9:07 PM

Just like the game against Seattle, the refs are once again firmly in Pittsburgh’s pocket. Pathetic. Would be a good game otherwise.

Hammerhead on February 1, 2009 at 9:10 PM

Quit watching.

The fix is in; as they say. Better-half can stomach the crap calls against The Cardinals and the blatant non-calls against The Steelers, but this football fan is ready for Comish Goo-Goo Clusterf@*khead to get the boot.

Better things to do – like shove rusty nails in my eyeballs then to listen to anymore of the blubbering Madden….

IMAO!!!!!!!!

Branch Rickey on February 1, 2009 at 9:10 PM

….or….what was his name again?

Vntnrse on February 1, 2009 at 9:18 PM

Some one should tell the refs that they can stop with the crap calls………it’s getting embarassing. The Steelers could win this game without leaving a question of referee’s interference.

96 yards against one team does seem a bit excessive. I’m amazed at the number of calls against Arizona.

There seems to be a really whimsical theme to this year’s ads.

Really likin’ the Coke ads.

Is it just me or do the commercials all SUCK? Especially Pepsuber!

Vntnrse on February 1, 2009 at 9:35 PM

I didn’t watch the half time. I had a feeling that Steelers would win. The Steelers tend to really kick butt when they know it is an important game. Err usually. Go Steelers!!!

sheebe on February 1, 2009 at 9:36 PM

Is it just me or do the commercials all SUCK? Especially Pepsuber!

Yep.

The commercials have pretty much sucked (with a few exceptions) for the last 10-15 years, I think.

Too much hype, trying too hard.

reaganaut on February 1, 2009 at 9:37 PM

No way Harrison can be game MVP after that penalty. No way.

Go Cards!

Is it just me or do the commercials all SUCK? Especially Pepsuber!

Vntnrse on February 1, 2009 at 9:35

No. Pepsuber was hilarious. On the whole, the commercials this year are vastly superior to last year (I mean, “what is love?” “Thriller”? seriously?)

I’ve guffawed a good half dozen times so far this year. That’s success to me.

Terrie on February 1, 2009 at 10:08 PM

I’ve switched over to NBC 3X this afternoon to hopefully catch something good on pre-game and had to switch away immediately. First time, they have the all-time worst GM of any sport, Matt Millen, analyzing the players and the games – yeah, he’s proven he understands the game. Second time, Olberdouche is yapping, third time Obama’s on. I’ll flip over to NBC at 5:20 for the game, otherwise I refuse to watch these idiots. It’s too bad, I’ve always kind of liked Collinsworth.

Steelers 27 – 23.

PatMac on February 1, 2009 at 5:42 PM

Good call on the score, if I do say so myself. Plus Steelers 7, Cardinals 3 wins me $350 in the office squares pool.
