Super Bowl Chat and Open Thread: Steelers vs Cardinals
posted at 11:00 am on February 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It’s the end of the line for the NFL season, the playoffs, and the weeks of easy open-thread posting here at Hot Air for one lucky blogger whose team went farther than he’d hoped early on. It’s also going to be the end of the road for the amazing run of the Arizona Cardinals, who spent the regular season getting blown out by Philly, New England, and the Jets, and then besting Philly, Atlanta, and surprisingly Carolina to get to their first-ever Super Bowl. They’ve turned into an impressive team, no doubt about it, and will give Pittsburgh a tough time.
However, in the end, the Steelers have been here before and have a defense unlike the Cards have seen this year. They have also shown that they know how to take advantage of an off week, being the only bye team in this playoff cycle to advance to the championship games. They’re rested, they’re experienced, and they will have too many weapons for Arizona to handle. Since I gave Hugh Hewitt ten points and the Cards, I’ll predict a 28-17 victory for the Steelers today. And the last time I ever gave anyone ten points in a Steelers game, Pittsburgh beat the LA Rams in the 1980 Super Bowl … by eleven points.
I’ll have family over today for a Super Bowl party, on the new HD TV system I bought myself for Christmas this year, so I won’t be live-blogging — but that doesn’t mean we can’t do live chat during the game! If Jazz Shaw has forgiven me for giving his lovely wife the idea of torturing Jazz with the Mamma Mia DVD last night, perhaps he’ll moderate the chat room — or if not, maybe he’ll just insult me as often as possible from it during the game. Either way, we’ll cheer the culmination of a great season by two surprising teams tonight, talk about the awful commercials, and celebrate the fact that Hot Air will continue its ongoing mission regardless of the momentary stumbles and obstacles, thanks to The Boss … and not the one performing at halftime tonight. Be sure to join us!
Update: I forgot to mention that people need to register for free at Ustream to participate in our live-chat sessions. (And if the log-in prompt doesn’t come up in the chat box below, use this link instead.)

I’m rooting for, and picking, the Cardinals. Their defense is playing great in the playoffs and they have a high powered offense to counter Pittsburgh’s great defense. Should be a good game!

GO CARDINALS!
When it’s supposedly a done deal, I’ll root for the other team every time. Of course, that didn’t work out so well for Travis against Santa Anna in the orginal Alamo Bowl. And I fear this game may be similar.
Besides, the Phoenix people have rooted for our Cowboys as much as their own team for long enough; time to repay the favor.

What the hell is with all the Cards support here? Good god. Look, kids, it was a nice run for you guys but the Superbowl is where the cream rises to the top. A 12-4 team that had the toughest schedule in the NFL vs. a 9-7 team that squeaked into the playoffs? The best defense in recent history vs. an Arena League grocery bagger?
This is Superbowl 14 all over again, Cards in the Rams role. They may make it entertaining for a half but by the end the Steelers (and the thousands of fans that will make today a home game for the black and gold) will be happily toasting yet another Lombardi trophy.
Here we go, Steelers, here we go. Pittsburgh’s goin’ to the Superbowl!

Dude. Relax. Kurt is a Super Bowl Champion and NFL MVP.
Cards have one of the top two or three offenses in the league. Warner is the second or third highest rated passers this year, and that’s with the team taking a few weeks off :-) (Jets, Patriots, 1st Eagles game) I gotta believe they will find a way to move the ball on Pittsburgh. They managed against Philadelphia and a lot of people were picking the Eagles to win today. Doh!
Cardinals deserve some respect! Hopefully they’ll do their talking on the field. Should be a great game!

I fail to see how any schedule that includes two games against the Browns and two games against the Bengals can be considered the #1 most difficult schedule.
I mean, come on now.
Here’s why the Cards will win today:
a) Kurt Warner is good against blitzing because of his ability to see the field. With three 1000+ yard receivers, he’s going to have one of them open at all times. Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Bolding don’t even really need to be open, actually. And, the Cardinals O line is built for pass blocking (not so much the run blocking).
b) Many on the Cardinals coaching staff were formerly with Pittsburgh. They know the Steelers. When these two faced off last season, the Cardinals had a relatively easy win, even with Matt Leinart at QB.
c) Both run-centric teams in the playoffs (Atlanta and Carolina) did terribly against the Cardinals defense. Roethlisberger will have to beat them in the air, and he has bruised ribs and Hines Ward has a sprained knee. Roethlisberger holds on to the ball too long and will get creamed early and often for doing so.
d) These teams are evenly matched – great offense (Cards) vs. great defense (Steelers). Average offense (Steelers) vs. average defense (Cards). But, the Cards defense has been playing better in the playoffs than they did during the season, and the Steeler’s offense has not had a similar surge in play level. I think that will be the difference today.
Prediction: Cardinals 32 Steelers 30

Dr. Manhattan on February 1, 2009 at 11:59 AM
Ditto. As a 49ers fan, I’d hate to see Steelers get to #6 first. But their Super Bowl record is already tarnished, so San Francisco will remain on top in that regard regardless of the outcome.
Even moreso I’d hate to see a divisional opponent — especially the Cardinals who have been pathetic for so long — get to enjoy their fist championship in Arizona.

1) Strength of Schedule 2008
http://www.theredzone.org/strength.asp
2) To compare that Offense to the Steelers defense is way off base. The Steelers defense in a tough schedule was number one. The Cards offense was ranked towards the top but against a week division and a week overall schedule.
I imagine the divisional games the Cards played on their way to a 9-7 record were much tougher/sarc.
Interesting you failed to mention their divisional opponents are: Arizona, Seattle, and St. Louis. Too friggin hilarious.
3) The Steelers defense always keeps these games close and Ben manages to win close games often by converting 3rd downs at a better pace than other QBs the last several years.
4) The Steelers will not blitz that much and they have not been lately. They will contain the Cards against the long pass. They will give up yards and a couple of tds and 2 field goals but they will not give up more than 20 points. Look at their history.
5) The Steelers as well know their old coaches. I really tire of sports talking points as well as political ones.
6)
You have far too much respect for the Cards D against that lousy schedule. Ben makes big plays often out of the pocket. Watch him burn the birds.
Sorry but when one speaks of strength of schedule, please at least do your homework.

The Steelers opponents in their own division won 19 games this season while the Rams and those other awesome teams in the Cards division won 13.
Like I said it will be close (24-20) and the Cards have done what they need to do to get to the game. They can win it with that offense but please let us look at the facts. The Steelers defense has not gotten rolled this year while the Cards lost to the Pats 47-7 in December.

Christien on February 1, 2009 at 1:00 PM
Cards lost to the Pats 47-7 on the road in ice because they had already clinched their division and didn’t want to get hurt. Anyone who watched that game (including the ESPN crew who gave the whole defense a “Come on Man!” segment that Monday) could see that the Cards weren’t motivated to play. The Cards don’t get to the playoffs very often, so the “don’t get hurt” thinking was in full effect. Meanwhile the Pats were battling to get into the playoffs.
How they played in the regular season is one thing – but they’re not playing in the regular season. Based on the 3 playoff games (against good teams with winning records, just like the Steelers) the Cards have done quite well. A motivated Arizona Cardinals team can play up there with anyone, and believe it, they are quite motivated right now.
Also, my earlier point about Roethlisberger getting hit early and often still stands – he’s one of the most sacked QBs in the league, specifically because he does hold on to the ball too long and plays break down. Often he manages to create something out of nothing, as you said, but he sure gets sacked a lot as well.

I love sports and this is the greatest game of the year. My take? This game is the Steelers if they can just manage to score more points than Phoenix. That is the strategy they have to follow if their going to come away with the win.
I think, though, that it is going to go right down to the 9th inning.
Kasper Hauser on February 1, 2009 at 1:17 PM
One game – 60 minutes. The Steelers could catch the Cardinals unprepared and run away with it. However, with Warner and his weapons, if the offensive line can hold up and the defense continues doing what it has been doing, it could be very interesting. Do not count Warner out. The Cardinals were supposed to lose all three of the past playoff games.

For the most part, I’m going to piggyback on this sentiment, and Warner’s got a great story and Fitzgerald is unstoppable.
I wrestle with the choice because Big Ben attended my alma mater and the Steelers have a great franchise.
That said, I heard this week that the Rooney family backed Obama. Of course, Ohio went blue in November, thanks to Bob Taft and ACORN. But PA always turns into Fool’s Gold for the GOP, so I hope Arizona kicks Pittburgh in the teeth.

The strength of schedule statistic can be very misleading. After all, the San Francisco 49ers won 5 Super Bowls despite having very easy strength of schedules in several of their Super Bowl seasons, especially in the 1980s, a decade in which they won 4 of their 5 SBs.
In the 1981-82 season, the 49ers strength of schedule? 13th out of 28 teams.
In the 1983-84 season, their SOS was 16th.
1987-88 season: SOS was 24th out of 28 teams
In the 1988-89 season, their SOS was 5th
And in their final SB season, 1993-94, their SOS was 21st.
Between the late 1960s and the late 1980s, the division the 49ers played in, the NFC West, had no other good teams. It took the 1987 New Orleans Saints to break that monopoly. Until then, SF basically swept their division every year.
Del Dolemonte on February 1, 2009 at 2:04 PM
Yes, but the ‘Niners were clearly a top flight team in all of those seasons. It wouldn’t have mattered what division they played in, they’d have been there at the end. Can you say the same about the ‘Cards?
KGB on February 1, 2009 at 2:16 PM
Whatev’s big boys! The Bowl is all about destiny, not stats- which like polling samples can be used to prove nearly any point. Cards got that special something this year that means more than what the egg-headed prognosticators can put their collective finger on. Zona shouldn’t be here but they are, and they shouldn’t win but they will. They have, in the words of Dr. Evil: “a certain something the French call, … , … I don’t know what”

You make a good point as On any day almost any team can beat another( see Stanford vs. USC). I do think it helps to sharpen the blade as one may say against a better schedule.
The strength of the Steelers’ defense can rarely be doubted. They will be the difference.

I see the “dude” hit home…hmmmm.
Whine on… every group of fans has some bad eggs. In fact, I bet based on your posts alone that you egg them on and wonder why you get your ass kicked. One thing for sure that in a fight I could pick out the 10 toughest Steeler chicks in the stadium and whip up on the 10 toughest San Diego surfer dudes at San Diego’s stadiun on game day. No doubt.

Good Grief. I turn on NBC to see what is on pre-game and they are trotting out Keith Dobermann. Does this network have no shame.
