Super Bowl Chat and Open Thread: Steelers vs Cardinals

It’s the end of the line for the NFL season, the playoffs, and the weeks of easy open-thread posting here at Hot Air for one lucky blogger whose team went farther than he’d hoped early on. It’s also going to be the end of the road for the amazing run of the Arizona Cardinals, who spent the regular season getting blown out by Philly, New England, and the Jets, and then besting Philly, Atlanta, and surprisingly Carolina to get to their first-ever Super Bowl. They’ve turned into an impressive team, no doubt about it, and will give Pittsburgh a tough time.
However, in the end, the Steelers have been here before and have a defense unlike the Cards have seen this year. They have also shown that they know how to take advantage of an off week, being the only bye team in this playoff cycle to advance to the championship games. They’re rested, they’re experienced, and they will have too many weapons for Arizona to handle. Since I gave Hugh Hewitt ten points and the Cards, I’ll predict a 28-17 victory for the Steelers today. And the last time I ever gave anyone ten points in a Steelers game, Pittsburgh beat the LA Rams in the 1980 Super Bowl … by eleven points.
I’ll have family over today for a Super Bowl party, on the new HD TV system I bought myself for Christmas this year, so I won’t be live-blogging — but that doesn’t mean we can’t do live chat during the game! If Jazz Shaw has forgiven me for giving his lovely wife the idea of torturing Jazz with the Mamma Mia DVD last night, perhaps he’ll moderate the chat room — or if not, maybe he’ll just insult me as often as possible from it during the game. Either way, we’ll cheer the culmination of a great season by two surprising teams tonight, talk about the awful commercials, and celebrate the fact that Hot Air will continue its ongoing mission regardless of the momentary stumbles and obstacles, thanks to The Boss … and not the one performing at halftime tonight. Be sure to join us!
Update: I forgot to mention that people need to register for free at Ustream to participate in our live-chat sessions. (And if the log-in prompt doesn’t come up in the chat box below, use this link instead.)

Until the penalty, I think Harrison was the MVP. It was a team victory. My point is simply that the Steelers’ quarterback didn’t distinguish himself enough to be singled out.
I live in SoCal and don’t have a home team to root for. I actually was a huge Steelers’ fan in my childhood during the Bradshaw/Hanratty years, but I’ve been super impressed by Fitzgerald in the playoffs.

CHAMPIONS BABY!!!!
Celebrating here in Pennsylvania…gone nuts, had great dinner and what a game folks. I was stunned when we won. Just shouting out away from home.
Congrats to the fans, to the TEAM, and TWO men should go to Disney, not one.
ProudPalinFan on February 1, 2009 at 10:54 PM
I didn’t read all the comments, but the Cardinals played very well, and the Refs were clearly beholden to the Steelers.
Regardless…congrats to the Steelers. They won, but barely. They were supposed to destroy the Cardinals. What happened with that?
JannyMae on February 1, 2009 at 10:54 PM
Warner had better stats across the board, “facts is facts”.
You’re choking on the Kool-aid, this game was a travesty to the sport.

funny how everyone ignores all the holdings and blocks in the back that were not called.

With how I talk about Dan Rooney, it is clear I am not a Steeler fan. But I would love to fly to a certain area tomorrow and get to Schmidts by the Airport for an Iron and maybe later, to Eat N’Park or Primatis. For real, I will get there before the month is done and while I have the beer, I shall think of Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Bradshaw, Swann, Ward, Rod Woodson and even Greg Lloyd. The memory of guys like them is what the NFL is all about.
IlikedAUH2O on February 1, 2009 at 11:00 PM
What’s that they say about a broken clock?
abobo on February 1, 2009 at 11:01 PM
Did anyone else see the porno trying to interrupt the game in the second half. We turned it off before something was shown. We had a child in the room. Here in Tucson on Comcast there was a definite hijack of the signal at least twice and the second time was a porno, but no nudity. It was getting close when we got the TV turned off though. Just wondering if anyone else in the country saw that too?
Great game. Too bad Arizona couldn’t hold it at the end! The interception return at half time was all the difference. I’m proud of the Cards, but victory would have been sweeter.
Ordinary1 on February 1, 2009 at 11:02 PM
They were too busy watching the refs serve the Stealers the game while Harrison got his thug thizzle on by punching players without being ejected, taking his helmet off, etc. etc.
You probably think that the Steelers played a nice clean game against the Seahawks, don’t you? Ben probably scored that phantom TD during that game too, right?
darclon on February 1, 2009 at 11:03 PM
Sorry to hear that.
abobo on February 1, 2009 at 11:04 PM
Hilarious ..the Steelers d did what they wanted as
they made the Cards one dimensional. The Cards had no running game. They knew they could let him have 300 plus yards and still win if there was not a running game. They have done it before and will do it again.
enjoy
so many losers always trying to take the shine off
will not work here
Go STEELERS
Champs

so little class shown by the haters as they claim to congratulate the Steelers.

Jamson64 on February 1, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Crazy. After the go ahead Cardinals TD somehow the broadcast cut to a porno. We got the TV off before she got his pants off, but there may have been nudity here in Tucson on Comcast. I’m still Googling.
Ordinary1 on February 1, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Ref’s clearly handed the game to the Steelers. The last touchdown wasn’t a touchdown either. Madden & Michaels must have bet on the Steelers with their lopsided commentary. Last touchdown camera angle clearly showed his right foot did not touch the ground but rested against the left foot. A disappointment that such a close game is measured by crappy calls. Hitting the placeholder? Give us a break. Thefluffy touch on the Steeler quarterback a roughing the passer…BS. NFL is losing it’s class with this stuff.

So Harrison is classy, right?
Way to ignore everything I stated while living in delusion. I was not even interested in this game but once it was obvious the refs rigged this game I became pretty mad.
I’m not someone who calls shenanigans lightly, but this game was pretty sad.
Please use your vast intellect to demonstrate how Warner fumbled the ball? and then follow up by explaining why that call wasn’t reviewed. That miscall was enough to taint the game.

You still haven’t answered my questions while claiming I had no case.
The Steelers are thugs, they cheated, and this wasn’t the first time.
You’re outta here because you can’t rebut obvious examples of thuggery (see Harrison) or the refs steering the game.
darclon on February 1, 2009 at 11:15 PM
According to the article there was nudity before it went back to the game. I’m glad we got the set turned off in time. One of my friends had his 4 year old with him. That would not have been good. Apparently the phones are ringing off the hook at Comcast and the local NBC is not commenting.
Ordinary1 on February 1, 2009 at 11:15 PM

What a game. What a #$%^ great game. Heh. Congrats Steelers.

After reading the comments to the AZ Star story it looks like it was isolated to Comcast in Tucson. A lot of people are talking about canceling their cable. I hope they catch the pirate, or master control operator, or whoever was responsible. We were able to turn the set off in time. Other families were not and some children saw something the definitely should not have.

That was a great game.
I had no dog in the race so I did not care who won.
Steelers dominated the first half but Arizona came back in the second.
Congrats to all Steelers fans!
Arizona fans should be proud too. They gave it one hell of a try.

Amazing game, I’m glad to see bi-partisan hate for Springstein. Go away old man, you’re bordering Streisand/Hank Williams territory in terms of annoying politicized celebrities.
In reference to the nudity. I think the adolescents who were young kids when they saw Janet Jackson’s boob are still suffering PTSD. It’s the silent destroyer of lives and futures…brief flashes of nudity totally outside of a sexual context at the age of 6. Nothing ruins a child faster. Stop this epidemic. Make constant phone calls to the FCC and/or comcast because there’s certainly no political cause worth organizing or protesting other than those heartbreaking brief flashes of nudity. Now we’ll never have to ask “won’t someone PLEASE think of the children” because you are.

Sounds like Terry McAulay is the Steeler’s bitch.
Check his bank account in the next few weeks.
Better yet, ask any Ravens fan. McAulay broke NFL rules by reviewing a play AFTER another play had been run. Tennessee Coach Jeff Fisher, co-chair of the league’s competition committee that’s charged with maintaining the league’s integrity, later called the mistake “costly” and “unacceptable.”
An NFL spokesman declined to confirm the Super Bowl crew’s identity, and declined to make Mike Pereira, the league’s vice president of officiating, available for comment. Don’t belive me? Look it up. I don’t watch the NFL any more for two reasons: First, the inane and completely clueless television broadcasters. Second, the referees who seem to have their minds made up in advance about who should win the game.
gordo on February 2, 2009 at 1:54 AM
I never thought that Kurt Warner would have been able to redeem himself in the second half. Having thrown the ill-advised pass at the end of the first half and caused a 14 point swing Warner and the Cardinals looked like toast. But Unbelievably Warner and the Cardinals came all the way back and took the lead with only 2 and 1/2 minutes left to go in the game. And that was despite over 100 yards in penalties. That the Cardinals did not win the game with Warner having a 112 passer rating and over 400 yeards of offense is not Warner’s fault. The Cardinals’ defense did not make the plays at the end of the game when they needed to. Roethlisberger rose to the occasion and the rest is history.
technopeasant on February 2, 2009 at 5:34 AM
Congratulations to the Steelers.
And thank-you Cardinals, for giving us fans here in Arizona such an exciting season.
AZCoyote on February 2, 2009 at 7:14 AM
It was a good game. I missed most of the first half, though.
I knew the Cards scored too soon.
I don’t know about the refs, I guess I missed some of the calls. I do like to see the flags stay in the pocket in big games, except for really blatant stuff. That running into the holder call would have been a great non-call, but didn’t factor into the scoring.
The one really bad call I saw was a defensive holding on the Cards, but that’s the NFL for you. That happens all the time, guy grabs a little piece of the shirt and the ref just happens to glance that way – out comes the flag.
I think the refs have become “worse” as camera technology gets better.
A porno is a brief glimpse of nudity outside sexual context? I realize you’re probably 14 or 15 and think boobies are cool, but don’t fret, in another 15 years you might grow up.
reaganaut on February 2, 2009 at 8:26 AM

They were too busy watching the refs serve the Stealers the game while Harrison got his thug thizzle on by punching players without being ejected, taking his helmet off, etc. etc.
You probably think that the Steelers played a nice clean game against the Seahawks, don’t you? Ben probably scored that phantom TD during that game too, right?
Quit yer biatching. Have a problem with the penalties? Talk to the league and the refs. The Steelers had plenty called on them, and more than a few plays called back against us tot he Cards favor. Harrison was held so often in that game (and this season as a whole) the offensive players looked like wool sweaters draped around his shoulders like a college preppy. After about a season of that with very few penalties called in our favor on that, I give Harrison credit for not punching the refs.
I don’t fault the Cards, if you can “cheat” with a penalty they don’t call, do it. I blame the refs for overlooking it.
Blame the refs, son. Blame the league.
Better get to work on that petition for redress of grievances.
Saltyron on February 2, 2009 at 10:20 AM
The Cardinals had roughly 100 yards or penalties against them. The Steelers had around 15.
If you want to prop up Harrison as a hero or even argue that he should have been in the game after that personal foul, then go ahead. But don’t claim that you support sportsmanship of any sort or understand how football should be played.
Cheating is cheating whether you are caught or not.
darclon on February 2, 2009 at 10:30 AM
Good Bless Kurt and his Cardinals, they did good, and hopefully they will come back next year…better than ever!
dec5 on February 2, 2009 at 12:14 PM
Overall, a good game, but I was disappointed with the lack of review of Kurt’s “fumble” at the end — it made the game end on an odd note, imho. I realize that the booth announcers said that there was a review, but excuse me for not buying it. How often are reviews completed that quickly? With a change of possession (called on the field) there was no need to rush that last call.
Officiating was not the best, but that seems to be par for the course this year.
Y-not on February 2, 2009 at 12:24 PM
Here’s some official stats for that grievance petition:
Penalties-yards: Steelers = 7-56; Cardinals = 11-106. The difference in penalties called = 4. Not 60. 4. Yards? 56. A little more than 15, girlfriend. If the Steelers were buying the refs, they didn’t really get what they paid for, since they had to hustle a come from behind win at the end.
The Steelers had a TD called back from them, and had big plays called back from penalties as well. Bear in mind sweetness, the Cards were WINNING at the end and had the Steelers on their heels, and likely would have won without some serious come-from-behind guts under pressure by the Steelers.
Maybe we can go over the film like the Kennedy assassination and point out where a shoe lace was untied and how mean stupid that made the refs, or the Steelers got a little too much dirt on Warner’s jersey in a “CONTACT SPORT” and how he should burn in hell for it, but it don’t change a thang. Steelers 27, Cards 23.
And to name names re- officiating, the officials for the game were:
* Referee: Terry McAulay, #77; second Super Bowl, refereed Super Bowl XXXIX.
* Umpire: Roy Ellison #81
* Head Linesman: Derick Bowers #74
* Line Judge: Mark Perlman #9
* Field Judge: Greg Gautreaux #80
* Side Judge: Michael Banks #72
* Back Judge: Keith Ferguson #61
* Alternate Officials
o Referee: Ron Winter, #14
o Umpire: Darrell Jenkins #76
o Line Judge: Darryll Lewis #130
o Field Judge: Doug Rosenbaum #67
o Back Judge: Billy Smith #2
Get to work on that petition.
Further, read my damn post. I didn’t prop Harrison up as a personal hero or replacement for Mr. Rodgers, dipshite, I said he was held ALL YEAR and many times in last nights game, with I think only one called. But that’s OK right, cause I don’t read ya biatching about it, do I? That cards player shouldn’t have walked off the filed and flogged himself for his sins, but Harrison should have thrown himself on the sword? THAT”S WHAT REFS ARE FOR. He could be Ted Bundy, but HE WAS STILL HELD AND PENALTIES (your favorite thang) WERE NOT CALLED. I understand penalties should be called in situations like that. Didn’t happen much. Harrison and the Steelers could have boo-hooed and left the field, but they stayed and played. And won. If you want him on house arrest with Ray Lewis, again, start that petition.
I long ago quit blaming teams for the decisions of the officials. In 2005 I watched the Colts get a second chance against the Steelers in the playoffs when the refs blew a Palomolu interception/fumble/recovery that the BLIND could see was legit, and I didn’t blame the Colts for it.
I like the Cards. Warner is a good guy, and Whiz is da man. If they would have won, if I was a Steeler I would have been proud to lose to them. They earned it. If the refs tipped the game, blame the refs. Each team is in it to win it, and as many pros say, a holding penalty could be called on damn near any play. If that bothers ya, you don’t tell the players not to block, you tell the league to revise the rule or enforce it and throw the flag on every f*ckign play. But when the Steelers main rusher (and NFL player o da’ year), whether he is a child molester or not, is held all game in such an obvious fashion to keep him from piledriving the QB, that gets f*ckign old real quick.
Again, save your biatching for the refs.
Saltyron on February 2, 2009 at 12:30 PM
In the first place, I simply can’t believe there’s someone here so freakin’ JUVENILE as to be blaming the referees for throwing the game. The refs are part of the game, for better or worse, and if you haven’t grown up enough to swallow that, you really shouldn’t be watching sports.
In the second place, to call penalties like holding “cheating” is too silly for words. There are penalties for real cheating, and they usually involve suspension from the league. What you’re talking about are rules designed to keep the game civil and safe; minor infractions of those rules are expected, that’s why the refs are there.
Personally, I thought the refereeing of the game was bad, and I got irritated at the refs for not letting the players play the doggone game, but to whine about it like you are is childish.
philwynk on February 2, 2009 at 1:40 PM
I know the discussion is pretty much over, but I have to say, that was the most exciting Superbowl I recall. Great game, and major kudos to the Arizona Cardinals, who proved beyond doubt that they belonged in the game. Congratulations to Pittsburgh fans; the Steelers are a grade A franchise.
philwynk on February 2, 2009 at 1:46 PM
Holmes had a great game, and he made a lot of yardage with his legs AFTER some of his earlier catches, and that TD catch was spectacular. He deserves the MVP.
Big Ben might have had fewer yards passing than Warner, but he did save a lot of otherwise broken plays by scrambling to avoid being sacked, then completing passes for first downs. He’s a close call with Holmes for MVP.
If the Cards had won, the MVP should have been Fitzgerald–so many acrobatic catches, and that man can FLY!
In any case, a great game, worthy of the Super Bowl.
Steve Z on February 2, 2009 at 4:07 PM
Actually, I think you are right – the NFL should seriously review holding. As it is now, it happens quite a bit and gets called randomly. While I do believe the refs try and call it fairly, this is an inherently unfair system, as what is a foul on one play is not on another.
Perhaps it is a flaw in my memory, but it seems to me that holding was called more consistently in the past.
Oh and PLEASE drop the “roughing the passer” penalty. The rules should be the same for the QB as any other player.
18-1 on February 2, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Congratulations to the Cards, they won the game, the officials stole it, and the Steelers accepted a tainted victory on a golden platter.
What a shame. Welcome to our brave new world, where the media is even silent about the inequities of bad officiating.
I’ve never seen a team so little pleased to win a superbowl.
