The obligatory “Hot Air’s revenue stream goes up in smoke” post; Update: PJM speaks

Starting tomorrow, you too can read HA for the low, low price of $99.95 per year.
No, just kidding. Or am I?
As you know, last September Pajamas Media began a new initiative in Internet television called Pajamas TV. When we started with our RNC coverage from Minneapolis, we noted that we would be in a Beta Phase through the first quarter of 2009. In the last few months we have strengthened the PJTV lineup with shows covering Media Bias, Education Bias, Middle East Update, Sharia and Jihad, Powerline Report, Ask Dr. Helen, Hugh News, Poliwood, Conservatism 2.0, Economy and Finance, National Security, and others.
As the end of the first quarter approaches and we near the production phase of Pajamas TV, we will continue to build our emphasis in this area. As a result we have decided to wind down the Pajamas Media Blogger and advertising network effective March 31, 2009. The PJM portal and the XPressBlogs will continue as is.
Thank god I have that pothole-filling job in the new Obama WPA to fall back on.
Seriously, we think we’ll be okay. I figured traffic would crater after the election, settling somewhere around 350-400K hits a day by the inauguration. Thanks to you, we’re considerably better positioned than that. Things will be tight after April, as they are for everyone, which is why we hope/expect we won’t have to come begging for donations. But, er, stay tuned. As for PJM, Ace said it best: It was a good deal, it kept a lot of righty bloggers going during the election, and now circumstances have changed. Business is business, red in tooth and claw. I just hope there’s a conservative entrepreneur out there willing to snap up some of the talent that’s now on the market. Are there any new sites around flush with cash and looking to establish a presence in the blogosphere that could use full-time bloggers and the built-in audiences that would come with them? Hmmm.
Exit question via Atlas Shrugs: That PJM-sponsored blogger’s row at CPAC is going to be a little awkward, huh?
Update: You’ll know we’re in dire straits financially when you notice that every last post is comment bait about Palin and atheism, instead of every other post the way it is now.
Update: Another idea. If the man of Steele is serious about expanding the party’s reach online, how about hiring someone to blog for the RNC?
Update: Roger Simon weighs in:
Actually that part of our business has been losing money from the beginning, so the people getting their quarterly checks from PJM were getting a form of stipend from us in the hopes that advertisers would start to cotton to blogs and we could possibly make a profit. Didn’t happen. No wonder those people are kicking and screaming now that they are off the dole. I might too. [What's their beef? I thought most of them were free marketeer libertarians or something.-ed. Go figure.]

Dickless wonder, I mean Splashman… Damn, that was funny.
Can’t imagine how stupid & pathetic one must be to actually think a post like that was somehow meaningful or helpful. In fact, the Dickless Wonder must have posted that dribble just to get a negative reaction of some sort. Well done Splash!

hawkdriver’s name infers that he drives Hawks, which I take to mean BlackHawks or Yard Darts as we call them, and thus if I am correct, gives him every right to hate those that try to get him killed, whether it be by defunding he and his comrades or making disastrous decisions. of course that is all just guess work from his name…

Roger L. Simon – ready for MSM -

- Attack your critics…
Yup, Rog is ready to switch back the the left… bye bye Rog… Can’t say that I have ever found anything you’ve written to be remotely interesting…

I’m amazed some of you are knocking Ed for being a blogger on a, ya know, Blogsite? Not just a blogger, but arguably the best one on the right side of the sphere.
AP is fun but more of a sensationalist and his like is a dime a dozen on the Internet. Snarky blurbs and an attempt at caustic wit are prevalent, from Ace to Z.
If Hotair/PJM want to grow the answer isn’t driving away customers or moving your model to TV in this generation of busy workers with A.D.D. who are here for quick reading fixes and won’t tune in for these snoozefest shows. It’s innovating, streamlining, and offering up what is the main reason people come here and a better and more innovative way.
Reading this thread makes me realize why the GOP has cratered. While the tunnel visioned types screamed “go to the core, support just these values, appeal to the base!” The oppositon worked on broadening their appeal even if much of it was smokescreens and cheap mirrors.

Do you really think Conservatism is finished? Are you willing to bet the farm on that? The way you write on your site you snug little freak infuriates me because you are the arrogant elitists you people always claimed the Republicans and Conservatives to be. You have no claim to the white ivory towers of purity you believe liberalism to be. ANd I’ll tell you something Slappy. You’re going to fail. Your administration is failing already. And when we come back…

Blogs will have to develop a revenue stream. It is the inevitable consequence of old media’s demise. You can’t keep doing it for free. Imagine this site if Allahpundit had to wait tables to cover the bills. We like the content and we’ll pay for it.
Bloggers that have an affinity for each other should start to seriously think about a business plan. A for pay website that will feature original content and reporting. And gives users greater access to content. Let the capitalist gorila loose! The successes will end up much for mainstream in the near future. The horrible economy to come is going to leave the newspaper business in ashes, be ready to pick up the pieces and move talent into the mainstream. Allahpundit writing for FOX, Ed Morrisey interviewing Senators and hosting Lincoln Douglass style debates on CNN, Michelle Malkin Presents. It can happen!

Voice in the wilderness here but the Internet isn’t amenable to single income stream business models unless like DKOS and Huffpo you can have backers who are willing to throw money away and content providers willing to work basically for free. Even then Huffpo is taking a bath and Arianna’s investors will never see in return on what they put out.
My political blog is one of several blogs and the blogs are one of several income streams my wife and I have set up. Even with multiple blogs payouts are meager and unreliable, especially if you rely on adsense and the like. You’ve got to hustle, try different ad programs, offers etc.
But even if you’re doing everything right the days of the blog millionaire are over. My wife and I like to work at home so we can spend time together and be our own bosses, but the trade off is knowing we will make much less money. Red Alerts biggest score has been boxes of swag from promotion companies for blogging about their crime dramas which while nice doesn’t pay the bills.
Diversify. Maybe out should start a Hot Air porn site. I’m just thinking out loud, but a lot of people want to see Allahpundit, why not really give’em the what they want?

I found the real reason behind PJTV’s turn about… it’s on their advertising page
I guess we “Regular Joes’” are not who they are targeting. they just want Joe the Plumber types to do the reporting, not as viewers… maybe they should have more Lamborghini commercials…
Kaptain Amerika on January 31, 2009 at 4:59 PM
AP has never had any use for Rush but generally tolerates the Rush acolytes well. But this last series seemed to hit a nerve with him. I don’t remember the exact wording and have no intention of digging it up, but he let slip the veil somewhat.
The fact that AP despises Limbaugh, has no respect for Palin, and thinks their fans are idiots doesn’t diminish the site, necessarily, but it’s … sobering.

William Amos on January 31, 2009 at 5:16 PM
I love this blog!
HotAir has the line editing standards of the print edition of WSJ. Michelle’s instincts as a reporter create a high water mark for AP and Ed. It’s tough for two guys to be on top of every little curve and swerve in the infotainment industry. But they do a damn good job.
That being said, I think you’re dreaming. FoxNews is the premiere cable news network. They have countless producers, interns and paid employees working for them. More importantly, they have a paid phalanx of reporters.
Fox doesn’t need HotAir, neither does Rush. But, I do, You do. We do. That’s the problem, until a sizable number of loyalists and interested parties define themselves as a bankable revenue stream…HA won’t be able to compete with or said giants.
Now is not the time to delude one’s self with illusions of self-importance. Our numbers don’t mean dick if the money is not there.
It’s foreboding, but reality is a bitch.
***
More constructively, I recommend the gangsta rap, East v West model. Hire some ill-ass reporters, perhaps adorn them with gold teeth or at least big shiny rims on their feet. Then just start calling out reporters and networks by name. Roll up on Olbermann at MSNBC and “represent” all over his hatsize 9 head. Put that jammy on YouTube. What!?
Threaten mayhem and annihilation if they can’t respect HA’s game. A few videos, with MM, AP and Ed chillin, makin it rain money. Playa Palin could do mad fat cameos.
Ali GAllah P. What?!?It’s nothin but a GOP thang baby…

The Race Card on January 31, 2009 at 5:19 PM
I don’t despise Limbaugh and I do have respect for Palin. It’s the fact that I’m described that way merely for criticizing them that bothers me, not either of them. I don’t like sacred cows, either on our side or the left, and too many people are willing to hold both of them sacred and above reproach. If the cult of personality around each of them relaxed a little bit, I wouldn’t tweak either of them nearly as much.
Allahpundit on January 31, 2009 at 5:21 PM

Tzetzes on January 31, 2009 at 5:23 PM
Okay, understood.
But how do you “tweak” them?
By the threads you post? Cuz I really don’t see it.
hawkdriver on January 31, 2009 at 5:24 PM
Fair enough. I have long known that he’s no fan of Limbaugh, and that’s fine, whatever. His comments the other day were mostly related to commenters dismissing poll results from Carville on the Obama-Rush kerfuffle, prompting this response:
I’m not sure what criticism of Rush it is that AP is happily spewing – Carville’s poll results suggesting that he loses a public opinion war with the Messiah?
In this particular case, I couldn’t agree more with Limbaugh – to hell with Obama’s leftist “remaking” of America, and his “non-partisan” $900 billion pork/crap sandwich of a stimulus bill. That’s all Limbaugh said, and he’s dead on.
The other part of this “why can’t I criticize Palin and Rush” tantrum should be pretty obvious – other than Bush himself, you can’t name two other conservatives who are so universally despised and unfairly criticized by the monolithically liberal media and entertainment borg.
If there actually is a why, that’s why.
Jaibones on January 31, 2009 at 5:27 PM
I barely do tweak them. I point out stuff like the fact that Palin and Huckabee aren’t all that different on policy (so far). But because the cults of Rush and Sarah are so intense, anything I say about them that isn’t wholly complimentary is treated as dire heresy and evidence that I’m not conservative.
Allahpundit on January 31, 2009 at 5:27 PM
If the hate cult wasn’t so overwhelming, their fans wouldn’t feel so threatened by criticism from the right that aligns with the rest of the haters.
Jaibones on January 31, 2009 at 5:29 PM
Yeah, this is a big part of it too. “Why are you helping the left dump on the people we love?” Answer: I’m not. I don’t care what the left thinks. But if the sky is blue, it’s blue whether or not it helps the left to say so. The left shrieked for years that Iraq was going nowhere and — they were right. It shouldn’t be heresy to agree when they are. The problem with them is that they still shriek it’s going nowhere even when it obviously isn’t.
Allahpundit on January 31, 2009 at 5:29 PM
Then just ignore the hate cult. They’re irrelevant.
Besides, this logic doesn’t hold for everyone. Hannity and Bill Kristol are utterly, roundly despised by the left and no one minds when I tweak them.
Allahpundit on January 31, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Hard to do. Fair point, but hard to do. The entire newspaper, cable, network, and entertainment industry speaking with one really shrieky, obnoxious voice. Hard to do.
Jaibones on January 31, 2009 at 5:33 PM
I have no use for either of them, either, although I probably agree with every position either has ever taken.
Maybe it’s just my sacred cow. I love that cow.
Jaibones on January 31, 2009 at 5:34 PM

You seem to have a problem with trolls like Poptech who are just spamming the same material over and over again. He probably accounts for 25% of some post’s comments and its the same thing over and over again. People might not like reading that so much.

Allah. The left is never right. At least I haven’t witnessed such an example in 53 years. War is war. That’e why they call it war. Most don’t have the stomach for it. It’s dirty and mistake riddled.
Don’t worry, I’ll read your chit if it has to be scratched on the subway walls. I’ve been here from the very beginning and you smackin’ down conservatives is nothing new. 99% of politicians and conservospeaks need smacked down. Liberal and conservative. It does come down to a percentage type deal and a priority type deal though. All liberal politicians are corrupt and stealing from America. Every last one of them. Whereas, only 40 or 50% of conservative politicians are corrupt and stealing from America. So most would just as soon you crack on the majority and leave the honest heartfelt public servants alone. The mainstream has never willingly separated the corrupt from the honest. They can’t tell the difference, because they are corrupt. You being the honest all around great American guy should be able to accomplish this task. Hence the anxiety of the conservos here. The Allah-mos, so-to-speak. They expect more from the great American author… errr blogger. Hang in there Allah, I don’t like subways.

I have no problem with you criticizing Rush and Palin. I don’t like Rush myself. However, you especially seem to enjoy posting stuff from over the top Palin critics. You posted a video of Hugh Hefner criticizing Palin. Did we really need to know what Hef has to say about her? You also seem to be hung up on her social conservatism and religious beliefs.
terryannonline on January 31, 2009 at 6:10 PM
One of the most endearing aspects of anything on the internet is that one way or another you can get what you need for free. If people start charging for the good stuff that you could previously get for free it reduces the amount of hits to the site in exchange for some revenue. Some will stay, but exposure withers.
Then the free sites start growing again and draw away what’s left to the best of the free.
Free. Get it? If I wanted to actually PAY for someone’s opinion I’d have done it by now.
Spiritk9 on January 31, 2009 at 6:17 PM
As if this year couldn’t get any worse. Unreal, I gave PJMTV a shot (even won a T-shirt, which I do wear), but the quality of the product is not up to “pay per view” standards in my opinion. This is sad news if it all comes to pass. Allah is easily one of the top 5 bloggers out there and Hot Air is by far where I spend most of my interweb time.
Vigilante on January 31, 2009 at 6:21 PM
AP, I came to this site through Ed’s CQ and Michelle’s Hot Air Vents. When it started, there were good discussions without too many trolls and without too many commenters getting so bent out of shape that they became incoherent (including me). That has changed over the months. This site has become more noisome without substantial contribution to our knowledge and understanding.
I really enjoy the Instapundit site, where Glen Reynolds posts many newsy and informational items, often with his editorial comments included. I would think if you could post more news/informational synopsis, with your comments, the site would be more eclectic and interesting. We want to replace newspapers, and shouting match sites are not going to do that. I know that the tumalt and the shouting lures in commenters and visitors, but evidnetly it isn’t luring in the gelt.
Newspapers may seem like they only have one page of information with all the ads, but they do really cover a lot of territory, slant and all. Why don’t you tell us what is happening in YOUR town or with YOUR organizations. Think, how can I get the readers of newspapers to come to this site?
Old Country Boy on January 31, 2009 at 6:27 PM
I don’t want to watch TV – even good TV – at my desk when I could be watching it sitting on the couch or lying in bed. The PJMTV venture is going nowhere.

First off, my apologies for the comment during the McCaskill thread. It was over the line and mean spirited.
Second, sorry about this. It’s hard for me to see how a site like this couldn’t make some decent scratch from advertising, if the advertising is well-tailored to the readership. There’s got to be some competent advertising agencies out there that can connect you guys with the right sponsors.

eh on January 31, 2009 at 7:07 PM
that’s just the the movement and the party the user base represents going into a tailspin. can’t help it. i don’t visit a lot of other blogs, but i imagine that most righty blogs are having this problem because most conservative web users are feeling pissed off and quarellsome.
eh on January 31, 2009 at 7:11 PM
AP does a great service by popping our reality bubble of how the non-conservative universe views people like Palin. She could be the greatest thing for conservatism, but if she can’t get elected she is just the Governer of Alaska, which is nice but is not really important to 99% of us.

Hey, that’s an idea! Of course, I had a dream that Allahpundit was a woman…which we know is not the case.

Two Words: Google Adsense
With your web traffic you can be making $3000-5000 off Google Ads.

I don’t think there’s any reason to be upset at PJM for dropping something that’s not working for them.
If, as many here are saying, the money is in the blogs, present them with a model that works and they’ll come back. Or, better yet, come up with a model that works and cut out the PJM middle man.
Without a model that works, no one can really be upset at business people for cutting loose something with a negative ROI.

Hmmm. I though one of the image ads in HA was a Google ad. I guess I was wrong.
terryannonline on January 31, 2009 at 7:54 PM
The ads have to be embedded in each post on every page. You need to use large rectanglular blended ads. You need to use the maximum amount Google allows page, in addition to the embedded square, top banner, top link ad units ect… You can pay me my commission later :)

Was taking a shower and just had an epiphany:
The Jesse Jackson style of blog funding!
Take something like Pepsi’s stupid Obama homage earlier this week. Gin up all the genuine outrage you can, supplement with faux outrage where needed. Tell them that Conservatives are offended and will boycott their company en masse over this…
…but, it could all go away if they just buy a few hundred thousand dollars worth of advertising on HA.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
JadeNYU on January 31, 2009 at 8:06 PM
They might be but they are not going to produce the revenue stream that blended embedded ads will in each post. The top banner is fine but the right side below the fold will not earn much of anything. The ads have to be embedded in the content.

well I don’t know about Poptech being a troll, I haven’t seen any troll stuff from him, but I don’t pay a whole lot of attention to comments. but he’s dead on with the adsense and embedded ads thinking. HotAir should be able to clean house with Adsense.

Not really. Conservative sites get F$#@ by Google due to content. I regularly get stuck with Muslim dating ads and PSA (which you don’t get paid for)because of content. Adsense works best on sites with high pay-out targeted content. Lovecraft sites would kill for traffic like Hot Air because they would be rich, but you just won’t get the same kinds of ads here.
Plus adsense works best when you have a site designed to make people want to move on. On a site like this where everyone stays for awhile you’ll get less curiosity clicks. Adsense being something you have to “tweak’ to make pay is what has lead to the whole Made for Adsense page phenomenon.
