The obligatory “Hot Air’s revenue stream goes up in smoke” post; Update: PJM speaks
posted at 1:18 pm on January 31, 2009 by Allahpundit
Starting tomorrow, you too can read HA for the low, low price of $99.95 per year.
No, just kidding. Or am I?
As you know, last September Pajamas Media began a new initiative in Internet television called Pajamas TV. When we started with our RNC coverage from Minneapolis, we noted that we would be in a Beta Phase through the first quarter of 2009. In the last few months we have strengthened the PJTV lineup with shows covering Media Bias, Education Bias, Middle East Update, Sharia and Jihad, Powerline Report, Ask Dr. Helen, Hugh News, Poliwood, Conservatism 2.0, Economy and Finance, National Security, and others.
As the end of the first quarter approaches and we near the production phase of Pajamas TV, we will continue to build our emphasis in this area. As a result we have decided to wind down the Pajamas Media Blogger and advertising network effective March 31, 2009. The PJM portal and the XPressBlogs will continue as is.
Thank god I have that pothole-filling job in the new Obama WPA to fall back on.
Seriously, we think we’ll be okay. I figured traffic would crater after the election, settling somewhere around 350-400K hits a day by the inauguration. Thanks to you, we’re considerably better positioned than that. Things will be tight after April, as they are for everyone, which is why we hope/expect we won’t have to come begging for donations. But, er, stay tuned. As for PJM, Ace said it best: It was a good deal, it kept a lot of righty bloggers going during the election, and now circumstances have changed. Business is business, red in tooth and claw. I just hope there’s a conservative entrepreneur out there willing to snap up some of the talent that’s now on the market. Are there any new sites around flush with cash and looking to establish a presence in the blogosphere that could use full-time bloggers and the built-in audiences that would come with them? Hmmm.
Exit question via Atlas Shrugs: That PJM-sponsored blogger’s row at CPAC is going to be a little awkward, huh?
Update: You’ll know we’re in dire straits financially when you notice that every last post is comment bait about Palin and atheism, instead of every other post the way it is now.
Update: Another idea. If the man of Steele is serious about expanding the party’s reach online, how about hiring someone to blog for the RNC?
Update: Roger Simon weighs in:
Actually that part of our business has been losing money from the beginning, so the people getting their quarterly checks from PJM were getting a form of stipend from us in the hopes that advertisers would start to cotton to blogs and we could possibly make a profit. Didn’t happen. No wonder those people are kicking and screaming now that they are off the dole. I might too. [What's their beef? I thought most of them were free marketeer libertarians or something.-ed. Go figure.]

If even one percent of our users was willing to pay $29.95 a year, I’d be shocked.

I hear the Daily Kos is hiring. Do you a history of mental illness + a love of socialism + a tendancy to cling to government figures?

Obama just issued a statement:
There will be a time for HotAir to make profits and a time for them to get bonuses,” Obama said. “This is not that time.”

There’s numerous paid forums out there that people get banned from all the time, like [H]ardForum, AR-15′s forums, and SomethingAwful. All of them, though, have rules and regulations. When you pay for the membership, you have to agree to abide by those rules. Some of them offer full refunds if you’re banned, some don’t.

I’m just a college student, and I can honestly say I’d chip in $5-$10 a month to keep Hot Air going.
HYTEAndy on January 31, 2009 at 2:16 PM
$2.50 a month, even in a recession, is a pittance. XBox Live costs twice that, and you really don’t get much for your money.
MadisonConservative on January 31, 2009 at 2:16 PM
Oh yes. And given how much traffic we have, that server ain’t cheap.
Allahpundit on January 31, 2009 at 2:17 PM
I can think of one conservative sugar daddy who acknowledges using Hot Air as show prep. But AllahPundit would have to take Rush Limbaugh off the comment bait list.
I’m totally serious about this. As the de facto leader of the Obama opposition, Limbaugh needs to build a network and this site has a lot of pluses.

HotAir folks need to start telling other folks about HotAir. I do, and HotAir’s readership has probably increased by .0000000001% as a result. Hey, every little bit helps.
Maxx on January 31, 2009 at 2:19 PM
Forgive me for spouting off here. This should be a stand alone site, not tied to the main body of PJM.
With this amount of traffic the site could thrive off advertising alone and could kick back a franchise fee to the PJM corporation. Sink or swim then.
Regarding Amazon or other affiliate links. Generally they don’t pay the freight but you guys have a very loyal reader base that would click to buy from affiliate sites.
All you have to do is remind your readers to “support our sponsors” often.
Good luck. People don’t generally understand the total dedication necessary to keep a blog like this rolling.
Some bloggers never leave their keyboards, ever.

Allah, I’ve been out of work for 5 months and running at quite a monthly deficit. Even so, I would very happily pay $99.95 annually for this site. That’s just chump change compared to how much time I spend here and how much I love what you and Ed do. I’d probably do the same for Ace, although HA has kinda edged him out as my top fave blog (pretty much since the comment registration opened a few months ago and I could
spout offdialog here).I just hope there would be a way to do it without having to donate online. Just can’t bring myself to totally trust that process. I would gladly send you a check (today) or call in a credit card payment.
Just don’t leave us, man, we need you!
califcon on January 31, 2009 at 2:31 PM
Yeah, but on the other hand, few people would pay so they could be a troll. And second, the rules still apply, paid or not.
Maxx on January 31, 2009 at 2:32 PM
Maybe Ed can start doing conservative book reviews in addition to his movie reviews. You can become an Amazon affiliate, link the book and get 15% of sales from that shopping session.
I spend several thousand a year at Amazon and would be glad to start my shopping sessions via a Hot Air link, even if I don’t buy the book.
Valiant on January 31, 2009 at 2:32 PM
1) Find a conservative star to back us up. Maybe Ted Nugent, Tom Seleck or James Woods?
2) If this site is run by ad revenue, place more ads. I’ve been hear for a long time and have enjoyed the relatively modest amount of ads. There’s plenty of room for more.
3) Pay subcriptions would be a good idea. I pay monthly fees to Glenn Beck and Laura Ingraham, but I think Hot Air is the best Conservative news source out there. It’s my first source for news, and I can tell that many other talk show hosts are reading it, like Michael Savage and Dennis Prager.
4) How about a poll on the site asking “Would you be willing to pay a membership fee for commenting priveleges at Hot Air?”
cannonball on January 31, 2009 at 2:33 PM
Once people start paying to have commenting privileges the amount of hits will dry up quickly. Especially in the current economic climate. Why visit if you can’t comment? Kind of goes against the whole freedom of expression thing that has been so appealing in regards to the internet.

I’d be willing to pay for membership here to preserve HotAir—but not if it becomes a mouthpiece for the RNC. However, since the RNC probably considers HotAir to be opposition, that’s unlikely to happen.
If you do start charging for membership, I’d suggest the first month should be free. Don’t even ask for a credit card until the month has elapsed; get them hooked first.

As a member from the very first day Hot Air opened its operations, I always said you ought to have a donation button, or that I’d be glad to otherwise pay to be a member here.
I’m no longer sure that I would do so, because, frankly this place has gone from insightful and full of good rational discussions to being mostly stupid and nasty.
My own reading of the site has gone from several hours a day on average to just a few minutes a day. From hundreds, maybe thousands of hits and page refreshes per day to a couple of dozen at best.
I was so glad when Hot Air started up because I was getting sick of Free Republic for pretty much the same reasons mentioned above. Yet since the last couple or rounds of open registration, I have been participating more at FR , because it is actually more civil than this place has become.
Go ahead and start that membership fee; Maybe the nasty little trolls would go away and Hot Air would again be my favorite internet hangout.
Oh, and I’ll pay extra if Michelle will take a more active part in the threads, and start doing the daily Vents again.

Snarky Post…Isn’t he a blogger at HuffPo, or izzat the Daily Kossack? So many bloggers, so little time left to exercise our 1st Amendment rights.
If HA needs some dough, I’ll contribute. Sites like Lucianne.com started doing that years ago.

I think I like the idea of pay-to-comment best (pay-to-play!). I’d pay a pretty penny for access to HA– I love this site– but if it was pay-to-access, wouldn’t it be near impossible to attract new people; ie, how to you get paid readers if they don’t know what they’re missing?
I converted a few people into HotAir heads during the election; I’d hate for the word-of-mouth factor to die if it was pay-to-access.
Pasalubong on January 31, 2009 at 2:40 PM
put some ads up on your site and shamelessly plug your site in comments… I just went to your site to click on an ad, too bad there were none for me to click.
Kaptain Amerika on January 31, 2009 at 2:40 PM
I’m sure the RNC would love having their official blogger go by the name “AllahPundit”. (Rolls eyes)
Seriously, you guys will be fine. HA is uniquely prepared to handle this simply because you guys have two different audiences heading to the same place. Let’s be honest, while you and Ed have a lot of crossover, you have different styles and attract different readership. And on the very, very, very, very, very off chance that MM decides it is no longer financially viable to bankroll your arsenal of Eeyore conservatism, artificial religious controversies, and Palinmania blogdom, someone out in the internets will.
Congratulations! You win the internets!

I visited A LOT before I could comment. Was looking forward to the next open registration – then I got busy and spaced it and came home to “HotAir comment registration is now closed” post in the left column! Gaagh! Had to lurk for a few more months ’til the next one but it was worth it.
Just the other day on the radio there was discussion about how some big brand of scotch used to be considered a middling quality, so they decided to double their price and their sales actually went UP! Perceived value, baby. Put a modest price tag on reading and/or commenting privileges and people will want to be “in the club.”
innominatus on January 31, 2009 at 2:43 PM
Wrong. People get tossed out of places they’ve paid to enter all the time. That’s why club bouncers exist.
You have the muscle — ban hammer baby. Most of the dunces would likely re-enroll just to talk sh*t and get booted again.
The Race Card on January 31, 2009 at 2:43 PM

Ronnie on January 31, 2009 at 2:44 PM
Good question. I’m sure they do much more than we do; they’ve been around for so much longer. The Freepathon is the sort of thing we’d do if the crunch got really bad.
Alternately, I can see us opening a diary or bulletin board section if we became desperate for extra traffic. That would boost our numbers a lot, but at a steep price of quality control.
Allahpundit on January 31, 2009 at 2:44 PM
A Conservative Cookies bake sale sounds like a good idea.
Actually, $5 a month for members and a talk radio spot sounds like a good bet (ala Rush), a broadsheet style site with abstracts that fly out?

The “tip jar” won’t work AP. If you and Ed decide to stay together and make a go at this, an annual membership fee is the only way you will make this work long term. you can’t depend on tip jar money as a way to make a living.
For what it’s worth coming from a business owner of 27 years.
Figure out your annual overhead costs best you can; server fee’s and such. Figure out what you need for an annual salary. Make sure to include all overhead; taxes, accounting, legal, and insurance if any applies. Divide that number by a conservative number of subscribers, and charge an annual fee somewhere in the neighborhood of that number.
My best guess, is that you could get 20,000 members within the first month. Many more will follow. You don’t need to call your blog HotAir or Captains Quarters. The two of you are the vehicle, and the forum for discussion is the destination. If you could get the annual membership fee down to around 20 bucks, you will not need ads that take up valuable space. Forget the ads, and give us pure red meat.
Rush Limbaugh will help you in any way he can. I would recommend having guest posters on a regular basis. Start with Rush himself. Rush has an eye on Captain Ed, and I don’t blame him. Ed has a gift AP, it’s called the language of the heart. Stop writing about Sarah Palin, get her to write a guest post herself. Get other Conservative politicians to guest post. Think big, as we need to stick together and stand as one.
I’d sign up on day one!

I think a paypal button would not be a bad idea; it doesn’t cost you anything really to have up and if you just asked folks for a couple bucks every month or so you would get, well, you should get, a decent amount. Like other folks have said, I don’t subscribe to any newspapers or watch that much tv (the tv exists solely for the xbox); I get the weightier part of my news and analysis here and that has a value which I’d be willing to pay for.
Mr. Bingley on January 31, 2009 at 2:55 PM

wow those are small… (I clicked one or two) I would suggest a few more larger ads, like the 300×300 squares at the bottom of each post, and a skyscraper on the side. wordpress has some plugins for adsense.
well as “the race card” loves to point out, not if it’s relevant… I click on lots of the links to people’s sites and don’t mind a bit, I like getting multiple points of view. the only people it will bother is a few anal retentive commenters and who cares what they think… the whole point of blogs is to link and inform. that’s one of the problems with ads on blogs, most sites that make money do so by providing a service or product, blogs product or service is links to other sites, so inevitably you send your “customer” away from your site to an informative site and not to an advertiser. that’s why blogs do well with ad models like those damn hover ads in the text of the website. that’s what news sites like foxnews do.
Kaptain Amerika on January 31, 2009 at 2:57 PM
I like Hot Air more for the convenience of seeing the latest headlines that concern me. To be brutally honest, the commentary is not my cup of tea. I have noticed AP and even Ed seem to buy into some of the premises of the lefties.
From a business perspective, again to be brutally honest, anyone running a site who was depending mainly on Pajamas Media ads to support themselves was being naive if they thought that was going to go on forever. You need to diversify your revenue stream more, or heaven forbid, the bloggers need to get other jobs and do this on a part time basis.
I run a site that gets 20,000 page views a day and it took tons of work to get it to that point, even still it will probably never get to the point where I could live off of it. You need to get millions of eyeballs per day to do that. I would probably donate to this site from time to time having said all that though, I wouldn’t want to see it go away.
