Iran to Obama: Your willingness to talk proves your weakness

posted at 6:15 pm on January 31, 2009 by Allahpundit

Like CJ says, that fist sure looks clenched.

US President Barack Obama’s offer to talk to Iran shows that America’s policy of “domination” has failed, the government spokesman said on Saturday.

“This request means Western ideology has become passive, that capitalist thought and the system of domination have failed,” Gholam Hossein Elham was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

“Negotiation is secondary, the main issue is that there is no way but for (the United States) to change,” he added.

Surprised by the knock on capitalism from jihad HQ? Don’t be. The enemy of Iran’s enemy is its friend, which is why they’ve buddied up to anti-American socialist regimes via the Nonaligned Movement with a special emphasis on Chavez. International opinion matters, especially to Democrats, and digs at capitalism help advance Iran’s cause internationally even if they’re not exactly a raison d’etre for Islamic fundamentalists. (See also Bin Laden talking up Noam Chomsky and dumping on corporations in his last video message.) The significance of this isn’t that they’re using The One’s outreach to their own ends; self-aggrandizing propaganda is what Islamists do, after all, which is why Israel kicking the hell out of Hamas for a few weeks somehow gets spun as a Hamas victory. The significance is that it shows how obsessed the regime is with the perception that it’s winning its ideological battle with the west, to the extent that even rare attempts at rapprochement from the U.S. are sneered at as crude concessions of defeat. Like I’ve said before, that bodes very, very ill given how much national pride they’ve invested in the nuclear program. How can they make a deal with America to give up nukes when they’ve built their identity on defiance of America? Why, it’s practically a national slogan.

Despite all the liberal blather about multiculturalism, they really don’t understand some foreign cultures all that well. Offering to negotiate, maybe even compromise is seen as a sign of weakness (dare one even say submission) to many Middle Eastern Muslims.

And thinking one can negotiate with a suicidal death cult, like that in control in Iran, the same way one could with the Russians is another mistake. The Russians had a rational wish to survive, so one could have a Cold War of Mutually Assured Destruction. When your opponent does not care if he or his country live or die (they’ll all be martyrs in Paradise if they go up in a mushroom cloud), Obama’s “let’s negotiate” is ineffective and even dangerous.

Wethal on January 31, 2009 at 6:27 PM

Settle down, folks. The real fireworks will come when Hillary’s efforts at trying to avoid being embarrassed over there, are undercut by Samantha Powers who is quietly back in the inner circle. Our foreign policy is going to look like recess for 1st graders.

This is proof that the sock puppet in chief’s I.Q. was very greatly exaggerated. Someone said he had an IQ of 153, an obvious lie. It’s more like 83.

I can’t help but feel there are some really sneaky hard right conservatives out there that put McCain up against Obama purposely knowing Obama would win. Also knowing how utterly stupid Obama really is, that he would end up burying the liberal side for another 30 years so the hard right could finish what they started before getting interrupted with Klinton.

Crazy huh.

Spiritk9 on January 31, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Well, they have to start off at 100% belligerent so they can dial it back to 80%; then maybe 70%; then maybe some back channel communications; then maybe 60% belligerence; then maybe some multiparty talks; then a cooling off period; then 50% belligerence; then some direct talks; then concessions from the US because a deal is “imminent”; then the deal falls through; then it’s 4 years later, and oh, by the way, Iran is now a nuclear power. They will stall and rope-a-dope Mr. HopenChange until they have the only thing they want fom us: Acquiescence to their more powerful position in the region. Then Obama will blame Bush. Man, this crystal ball gets excellent reception!

I heard somewhere that Obama is a trekkie. Star Trek stories often featured very self-important sensitive diplomatic negotiations. Perhaps that’s Obama’s model for international relations.

But here’s the problem:

1. The “sensitive diplomatic negotiations” in Star Trek were always backed up by the enormous firepower of Star Fleet.

2. Star Trek is fiction.

ZenDraken on January 31, 2009 at 6:54 PM

How many times do we have to learn the same stupid lesson; when we broadcast our self-doubt and fecklessness to a world full of predators, we will soon be fighting for our lives.
Every major conflict we’ve ever been in has been preceded by a period of desperate peace mongering and conflict avoidance behavior on our part. The inevitable result has been a gross underestimation of our willingness to defend ourselves on the part of some international thug or other, and a fantastic miscalculation that triggers a maelstrom. The Presidential campaign of 1940 was highlighted by FDR’s proclamation that “your sons will not be sent to fight in any foreign wars” and the very next year saw the “surprise” attack on Pearl Harbor and an almost flippant declaration of war by Hitler’s Germany.
The current penchant for comparisons between our current economic travail and that of the “Great Depression”, should also include the notion that the prolonged period of weakness and isolation and indecisiveness not only ended with World War II but in fact also caused it. The entire strategy of the Axis Powers was founded on the notion that America was prostrate both economically and morally. They didn’t just dream that notion up out of thin air; they got it from listening to us!
What do you suppose the predators of the world are hearing from us now???
Good Luck!

Iran’s a revolutionary government. They can’t “unclench their fists” since the clenching is the very basis for their power and the background for their entire worldview.

The usual methods of carrots and sticks can’t work with ideologically-based states. They don’t respond to normal incentives that ordinary nation-states do.

A realist foreign policy approach is fundamentally incapable of dealing with such a regime since these regimes view accommodation or compromise as weakness.
