Showdown: RNC chair voting now underway; Update: Steele wins!

You can watch live online on C-SPAN or follow along with the running updates at Hotline or Campaign Spot. First man to 85 wins. The bad news: After one round of balloting, current chairman Mike Duncan leads. The good news: Some people thought he’d start off in the neighborhood of 70 votes, with a possible clinch on the second or third ballot. Instead he’s stuck at 52, just six votes ahead of Michael Steele. Ken Blackwell, who I thought would end up the favorite, is dead last with 20. Stand by for updates.
Katon Dawson’s third at the moment, but third-place finishers in the first round have gone on to win before. Here’s tomorrow’s headline today if he somehow manages to pull it out.
Update: Is the man of Steele about to shock the world? 48-48 after the second round.
Update: Steele 51, Duncan 44 after the third round. A money quote: “It’s a diverse party. We’re tired of being labeled as white supremacists.” Ambinder thinks Anuzis will make a deal with Steele, which would means 24 more votes for a total of 75, but I read somewhere else that Duncan and Dawson, the southerners, might make a deal of their own. That would mean 78 votes combined. Which would also mean Ken Blackwell, with 15, would get to play kingmaker.
Update: Duncan feels the “winds of change” blowing and calls it day. That leave 40+ votes in play. I’ve got a bad feeling that most are going to shift to Dawson and we’re going to see those headlines tomorrow after all…
Update: I can’t believe they’re going to elect a guy who has a whites only club in his past. After four, with Duncan’s votes now split, it’s Dawson 62, Steele 60. Anuzis has 31 and could put either of them over the top if he makes a deal.
Update: Blackwell says goodbye, and reportedly endorses Steele. If all 15 of his votes swing that way, Steele has 75, within 10 of clinching. Anuzis is the kingmaker now.
Update: Here’s what Blackwell said about Steele. Think he’s worried about the racial implications of Dawson defeating Iron Mike?
“I cannot change the composition of this electorate [pause for laughs] nore would I want to,” Blackwell said.
But he added, Republicans must “unleash a new birth of freedom” He said, Republicans need a candidate who “must inspire hope,” “have leadership ability and a “vision to pull us together and … Americans together” …
“That is why I put my fullest support behind Michael Steele.”
Might not be good enough. Blackwell’s supporters are hardcore conservatives, and Steele has a reputation (mostly unfairly) as a centrist.
Update: The fifth round is history and Blackwell’s supporters seem to have listened to him: Steele 79, Dawson 69, Anuzis 20. Your move, Saul.
Update: Anuzis is out, without an endorsement. Can Steele pull six votes from his pile? It’s all down to this.
Update: No word yet on the final tally but the man of Steele is the new leader of the party. He’s speaking now; we’ll have video soon. Let the racist “progressive” photoshops begin!

Get real, you have no basis to accuse him of being a racist.
I guarantee that if Michael was Michelle Steele, Lorien would give her fair consideration in deciding whether to “hit it” or not.
Furthermore, I actually agree with his observation that many are overtly pleased with Steele because of his race. Given the option of an obviously racially exclusive Southerner, not quite an ideal image, it makes sense. I think Steele is as moderate as McCain; he’s just smarter.
If you hear Steele refer to himself as African-American, will you cast him aside? Most black folks use these terms interchangeably…even those of whom eschew the term African-American. Same goes for whites. Everybody uses both terms. A few of you have an even more expanded palette of terms when referring to us. So I’m not gonna complain with Black or AA.
As far as referring to someone as a “fake” Black, you’re sad. That’s the same posturing taken by those who would call Steele an Oreo. I know you can’t see it, but believe me. You’re out on a limb on this one.

I’m more optimistic. If you look back into the past, the Republicans were the Party of fair treatment and championed minority equality (e.g.: MLK was a Republican, and Republicans were instrumental in passing the Voting Rights Act). It will take some time to get that message out and have it resonate with minorities, but it can and should be done. There is no need to compromise our principles. We need to engage people more and get our message to everyone.

MLK was not a Republican. Republicans were instrumental in passing the Voting Rights Act. That is correct.
Michael Steele is a good man and maybe he will hit the ground running and pull Republicans out of the sludge they have been dwelling in for a while. It’s a new day for the Republicans and the way things have been going for the last 10 days we should be inspired to start fighting for our freedom.

Footnote worthy at best. As was the election of the corrupt bastard in the White House.
The “Historic Day” Big H worthy, only comes when race isn’t even a factor in the public debate.
Obama isn’t even worthy of the credit he’s getting for breaking the race barrier because he’s actually multi-racial and multi-cultural and doesn’t have any reference to the so-called “black experience” that his election supposedly represents.

Plus, this is a Bold New Era, as the high priests of the One keep assuring us. 2006 was a trillion dollars ago. The campaign that lost the Senate in the previous era might sound very good to the tax, spending, and corruption-weary voters of 2010. I’d strongly recommend Steele work on building a squeaky-clean party – he’s going to be running against an administration that was already setting record for corruption before it was even sworn in, flanked by allies that stole elections by stuffing ballot boxes. The Republicans will lose an awful lot of momentum if the media can tease out a Mark Foley, or convince one of them to dance the macaca.
The post-Reagan era has been one huge stalemate between left and right, with the Left gaining steadily through the sheer momentum of an ever-swelling government. Bush I wins a war, but cedes domestic policy largely to the Democrats… Clinton implements huge tax increases and diversifies government into a swarm of micro-programs, but also signs welfare reform… Bush II signs significant tax relief into law, but spends like a drunken compassionate conservative sailor… it’s been a tug-of-war over a battle line slowly moving leftward. But not any more. Now everything is different, because the Left is trying to lunge across the table and grab all the chips. Suddenly everything is possible. If we can have eight hundred billion dollars of pork spending and limitless deficits, why can’t we try for eight hundred billion dollars of tax relief when the “stimulus” inevitably fails? If we can talk about nationalizing industries now, then we can also talk about privatizing government. Obama is setting the stage for the inevitable mournful press conference where he tells the middle class they’re getting a huge tax increase, instead of that tax cut he promised them… but when he gets there, he might find himself forced to discuss year-long tax holidays and flat tax plans instead.
Anything is possible now. Place your bets and draw your cards, Mr. Steele.
Doctor Zero on January 30, 2009 at 7:51 PM
This is truly a great day. Michael Steel is a great RNC leader for the party. More pork is getting exposed in the “stim-up-u-@ss bill. Even Dem Senators are pulling their support for the bill and there’s talk of re-writing the whole thing eliminating half of Pelosi’s communist takeover. It’s a win-win for conservatives.
Sunday, when the Cards win the Superbowl, it will have been a great week.

Bear in mind that it was a black person who told me that the party should stand for being inclusive, but I didn’t take it to mean that the party isn’t or she wouldn’t have been there. I think she meant that it has to be preceived as inclusive to the public and perhaps mostly to other blacks.

Congratulations Mr.Steele!
canditaylor68 on January 30, 2009 at 8:17 PM
He’s got a boatload of work to do. First he has got to put a muzzle on the old GOP and that means McCain, McConnell, Hatch, Specter, Graham, etc. and start getting guys like Coburn, Cornyn, Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, etc. out in media as GOP spokesmen. The old leadership failed miserably, we don’t need them as the face of the GOP.
Next he’s got to start searching for solid local conservatives to run in 2010 and really start raising money and directing it to places we make up lost ground. A daunting task.
Lastly he has to refocus the GOP platform around fiscal conservatism and limited government, this should be the easiest to accomplish but the GOP has become so entrenched in populism the last decade it may be hard to change.
lowandslow on January 30, 2009 at 8:18 PM
Steele. Palin. Jindal. Coburn. All faces of the NEW GOP.
We are truly living in historic times. If we can actually stay on message, walk the walk as well as talk the talk, people will look back at 2010 in much the same way that they looked at 1994, only with more reverence.
I am GIDDY with the possibilities. The Left will never see it coming, even with the help of the MSM and the current trappings of power that they have and enjoy.
Be upbeat, my friends. There will be some rough waters ahead, but the ultimate horizon will eventual lead us to smooth sailing.
Best speed to victory in 2010 and beyond, Mr. Steele.
Engage! ;-)

clinker46 on January 30, 2009 at 8:55 PM
Thanks for posting that, nelson. I had read that MLK registered as a Republican in 56. Every week I hang out with a buddies and the talk often trends towards Conservatism and minorities. Many of the guys seem to think that minorities will never embrace conservatism, but I disagree. I try to stress to people to understand history (and not just listen to the twisted version spun by the current Democratic party) and look back more than 40 years. I’m optimistic that some fresh faces can leverage the power of positive action and direct communication to these communities. I expect I’ll see the day when the Republican Party taps into the explosive power of Hispanic, Black, Asian family traditions and values and starts to make noticeable inroads in those communities. Conservative, limited government is the friend of the immigrant and the disadvantaged. I am putting a lot of ‘Hope’ into Michael Steele that he is the guy who can begin to deliver that message and make this happen.

Michael Steele to his Conservative Critics: Wake Up People!”
“I wasn’t saying, ‘well now I’m really a closet moderate and I can get to play with all the big boys.’ This is stupid. What I’m saying is lets build this relationship amongst ourselves because people are watching and there are a lot of people who would join us and be a party of our efforts who are PRO-CHOICE but they love our message on money; they love our value system on family values broadly speaking so then how do we cross appeal, how do we make ourselves relevant to the 21st century electorate which is clearly of a different mindset on a host of issues.” –Michael Steele
This is code for conservatives to compromise on issues like abortion and gay marriage to win over the center-left. Steele uses the threat of staying relevant to impliment the new philosophy. Watch. Give it time. I hope that I am wrong, but I’m not optimistic about this pick. Say “hello” to the Republican party’s new chairman!

Is there not room for people of differing views on some issues though? There are plenty of Blue Dog Democrats in the South and in the Rust Belt who are ardently pro-life and the Democrats are happy to have them. I kind of think this brand of extreme dogma does more to hurt us than help us. No one is saying the GOP has to compromise its core platform. But I think Steele is right about not being so exclusionary about the people we welcome into our ranks. I know *I* certainly don’t agree with every tenet of party’s platform, but I’m not a one-issue voter either. Nor are most Americans. The Republicans are more closely aligned with my views, but they aren’t perfectly aligned. I think it’s possible to stick to a platform of core conservative principles without running off voters who might otherwise identify with the Republicans but for their militant position on particular social issues. The Democrats have managed to stay on message for the last 100 years, even as their ranks have swelled and grown more diverse. I don’t see why we can’t do the same. I wouldn’t consider it selling out. I would just call it dialing down the rhetoric a bit. There are a whole lotta independents out there who are right of center and who could easily be pulled into the fold if we could just loosen our grip a bit.
The Republican Party has a major image problem. I think from listening to him that Steele is just the one to retool that image. I think it’s possible to put a new face on party without compromising its substance.

Who decides which issues are primary focus? Personally I find abortion abhorrent and gay marriage distasteful. But I think conservative fiscal policy, border sovereignty, national defense, tax policy and restored 2nd amendment protection are important as well.
There is nothing constitutionally rejecting same-sex marriage or abortion. In fact, the states’ rights argument is an argument for legally sanctioned abortions as allowed by states.
The rift between conservatives and Republicans is gonna be a messy pimple when it pops.

Steele is still the only African American to win a statewide election in Maryland. Dr. King himself would not have won that Senate race as a Republican in 2006. But at least he made the effort and ran a great, positive campaign. Democrats were so afraid of him that the DSCC illegally obtained his credit report to try to smear him.
And he was part of the only ticket to defeat a Kennedy in an election.
rockmom on January 30, 2009 at 11:46 PM
I don’t care what color the man is, he is very smart and a pretty savvy politician. BUT, from what I heard him say tonight, I get the feeling that he is going to take the McCain side of the biggest issues facing us today. When he said something about ‘if you plan on raising a ruckus, you better plan on being knocked down!’ The only time conservatives have raised He11 is when the GOP started acting like Ted Kennedy. If he is trying to warn the conservative right that he is going to be a dem-lite in order to attract more people to the party, then the party is over.

So, will you call him an oreo now?
Johan Klaus on January 31, 2009 at 12:06 AM
Very eloquently put, my friend. I tend to agree with you.
I really cannot conceive of the Republicans being so dumb as to still think that being RINOs is still the way to go, not after they got pasted in 2008 and not after the House Republicans showed some mojo in their unanimous rejection of the “stimulus” bill, to rave reviews by their base, raising the question during a FoxNews report as to whether Republicans have now “turned the corner” by finally demonstrating some leadership and some backbone.
“RINO” is in the eye of the beholder. Some automatically label as a RINO a Republican who is not to the far right on all social issues. Yet if that same Republican is strong on staying on the offensive in the War on Terror, and is fiscally responsible and lowers taxes to stimulate the econonomy, and cracks down on illegal immigration and strengthens our borders, and supports judges who do not legislate from the bench, and backs the Second Amendment, then it would be difficult for me to classify that Republican as a RINO despite more centrist viewpoints on social issues that may be harbored.
I believe (admittedly, a gut feeling without data yet) that the type of Republican that I describe above is the kind Steele wants to project to try to broaden the electorate without alienating the base. Steele has a tough job ahead of him. The adage “you can’t please everyone” comes to mind. As thoroughly demonstrated here at HotAir, people are naturally very passionate about their personal conceptions about what it means to be a conservative Republican, and getting people to be open to differing views is an uphill battle, to say the least.
Steele likely knows Republicans cannot survive if they continue to be beholden to far right positions on social issues, allowing for no exceptions. At the same time, Steele knows as well as anyone that we cannot pussy-foot around with the liberals, either. We shouldn’t hesitate to hit them back when they try to hit us. (He experienced first-hand the vitriol of the loony left when he had to dodge Oreo cookies being thrown at him in Maryland.)
Steele may be just the person to walk that tightrope and deliver a strengthened, and more conservative, Republican party than it has been in recent years, while being able to project a theme that can attract more people to the party. The time is right for a man like Steele to give this a real shot, and we all should be rooting for him. We all stand to benefit from his success.

Noneya = tool who should be banished.
It is not possible to try to defend idiots like this in the spirit of free speech when in fact there is no substance being stated.

I believe Howard Dean lost his election bid too.
Oops! There we go being rational.
Sorry.
Mojave Mark on January 31, 2009 at 1:01 AM
Exactly. It’s like trying to nail jello to the wall – there isn’t anything substantive to work with, and the more you try to work with it, the bigger mess you get.
Trolls should be BANNED.

That is awesome that Steele Won!!!! He is a good man.

There are three key issues that, IMO, Steele is on the wrong side of…
If you read his own platform, from his writings…
He still likes Affirmative Action.
He is for CO2 Cap and Trade.
He is squishy on the Border and Anmesty.
As all three of these issues will be brought up in this Congress… and all three are VERY important… I have my doubts about Mr. Steele.

I hire a lot of kids like this who are just out of college. After a few years of working, they usually become more conservative, especially after they see how much is taken from their check for taxes.

I hope he changes,
because that could kill the deal.

The illegal immigration was tolerable until the last ten years, but Texas has been overrun and it has become unmanigeable.
Johan Klaus on January 31, 2009 at 2:04 AM
Thanks for bringing this up. I don’t like those three things.
sheebe on January 31, 2009 at 2:15 AM
Is it worse then Ca.? Here is seems like they are filtrating every where. Americans are going to start cleaning up soon. This isn’t right and we must do something about it.
sheebe on January 31, 2009 at 2:17 AM
Seriously. Steele is a RINO?
Are you &^$ting me?
If Steele was the biggest RINO of the possible choices, we’re on pretty solid ground.
Besides. Did we really want “2 failed election cycles” or “whites only club boy” as RNC chair.
I eagerly await the liberals’ tarnishing of Mr. Steele. Let them revel in all their ugliness. And then say the words: “But I thought in The Age of Obama, we were supposed to look beyond race.”

Red State of Mind, NoLeftTurn and Vision said most of it for me
I would humbly add:
Steele

Pork in a pot
Falling Despot
