Report: Ted Nugent might run for NRA president

posted at 5:55 pm on January 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

Just the man gun-rights advocates need to counter the left’s stereotype of them as belligerent, wild-eyed cranks.

But Nugent tells Whispers he stands ready to battle the antigunners in Washington. “Clearly, the NRA is the ultimate ‘we the people,’ family, grass-roots organization for what is clearly Job 1 for free men everywhere: to guarantee our God-given right to keep and bear arms and defend ourselves,” he tells our Suzi Parker. “To be so honored to participate in any way, as an NRA board member or the ultimate honor of serving as president, would surely be a duty I would put my heart and soul into. I am genuinely moved that it is even being discussed. I am ready, willing, and able to serve if the good NRA members call upon me.”

From August 2007, here’s the would-be chief executive displaying his lobbying skills. Content warning.

I like it. The left uses celebrity culture to their advantage. We might as well, especially when talking about someone with as much charisma and, dare I say it, gravitas, as The Nuge.

Gun owners are caricatured as bloodthirsty, drooling morons no matter who runs the NRA, still I don’t know if Nugent is the right guy for the job; might be a bit high-strung.

Gun Owners of America needs more funding so they can have a bigger voice beside that of the NRA.

AP are you serious? Or are you talking about what you know not. Nugent is an incredibly articulate spokesman for gun rights, gun owners and conservative ideals in general. As has already been said we will be caricatured as knuckle dragging savages no matter what we do.

It is high time we fought back and fought back hard with a take no prisoners attitude. Uncle Ted is the perfect man for that job.

Just the man gun-rights advocates need to counter the left’s stereotype of them as belligerent, wild-eyed cranks.

Allah,

Were these decisions left to your type, James Brady would be up for the job.

Nugent is far from a “wild-eyed crank” if you look at his record and what he’s done with regard to the issues surrounding responsible gun ownership. You just can’t separate the public persona from the private citizen which until the corrupt bastard in the White House intervenes, has second amendment rights.

That’s all we need to see. He’s a loose cannon.

toliver on January 30, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Why? Because he’s controversial? It’s a virtually ceremonial position- the personal face on the only group protecting the Second Amendment. You post a video clip from a concert but you don’t know a thing about what the private citizen has done with regard to these issues. In an era where the local gun store was running “pre-inaugural specials” on firearms before the corrupt bastard took office, I’d say the advocates of gun ownership need somebody who is unequivicol in their support of ALL aspects of the Constitution.

highhopes on January 30, 2009 at 6:34 PM

I’m with Allah on this one.

I don’t think Ted has the wit to respond to an interviewer who said something to the effect of Smith and Wesson has no problem with blah. Heston: I’d expect that from a British company.

MirCat on January 30, 2009 at 6:35 PM

When Ted is in the role of 2nd Amendment and Hunting Rights Advocate, he is serious and delivers a strong, well reasoned message. I would consider voting for him. I would also would consider Tom Sellack.

DAT60A3 on January 30, 2009 at 6:35 PM

The trouble is, Nugent’s let himself become a cartoon when it comes to hunting. As a hunter, I’d like a more sober level-headed image before the public. I’m sure in practice, “the Nuge” is a conscientious hunter and firearms handler, but that’s not the image he’s projected over the years. He acts like a nut. He’s turned himself into a cartoon, and that’s not what the NRA needs right now. We don’t need “in your face.” We need “in you mind.”

RBMN on January 30, 2009 at 6:36 PM

baldilocks on January 30, 2009 at 6:44 PM

Sorry, I’m with AP on this one. Gun owners have a public image problem and some dude swinging his AR15 around screaming, “Suck on this bitch” isn’t going to fix it. If it is indeed just a “ceremonial” position, then we need someone a bit more stoic. Heston was ideal. I vote Tom Selleck.

RBMN on January 30, 2009 at 6:36 PM

I agree. I’m an NRA Life Member, and although I appreciate Mr. Nugent’s passion for freedom, I would rather someone else speak on behalf of the NRA.

DrMagnolias on January 30, 2009 at 6:50 PM

Ted Nugent represents the face and “personality” of the new Conservatism – if it is to survive in this country at all. We can no longer adhere to the “nice” and “civil” tactics of Nixon’s silent majority while the gates are being overrun by barbarians. The new Conservative movement will have to be down and dirty – and very much “in your face” if we are going to keep the free country our forefathers passed on to us. Liberals use these tactics because they know we’ll back down. We must use them ourselves and Uncle Ted has been PISSING Liberals off for years.

HondaV65 on January 30, 2009 at 6:51 PM

As a NRA Life member and a fan of Ted I’d vote for him. He is articulate and passionate. Perfect!

alilianstrom on January 30, 2009 at 6:54 PM

He’s turned himself into a cartoon, and that’s not what the NRA needs right now. We don’t need “in your face.” We need “in you mind.”

RBMN on January 30, 2009 at 6:36 PM

Naw, we do need “in your face”. That’s what draws headlines- no such thing as bad publicity and all that.

The people who pay dues to the NRA aren’t those on the fence, they’re people who hold firm beliefs in the 2nd Amendment and the freedom to own guns.

Calm, sober John Lott articles are great, but to draw attention to the cause someone like the Nuge could go a long ways. Someone in the anti-gun “reasonable restrictions” camp is going to have their mind changed by either.

AP has a point, but the NRA is more about rallying the base and making their voices heard rather than winning converts.

Hollowpoint on January 30, 2009 at 6:54 PM

Why should conservatives care about countering Lefist stereotypes? They will make them up on their own, in case you didn’t notice.

Right. It won’t matter who it is.

We don’t need “in your face.” We need “in you mind.”

RBMN on January 30, 2009 at 6:36 PM

Why? You think anyone will be able to change the minds of the anti-gun lobby? The anti’s will never change. With a guy like Ted the pro-gun folks just might get enthused for a change.

BacaDog on January 30, 2009 at 6:56 PM

I truly love Ted, but no.

Midas on January 30, 2009 at 6:56 PM

I’ve seen a couple interviews with Ted on gun rights and he came across as calm and knowledgable. I am a long time fan of the motor city madman both his music and his views though he can seem a bit over the top at times. I am a gun owner but not an NRA member so I have no choice in the matter. I do think he could be a good choice to stand up to the gun banner/grabbers though.

As firearm owners, we should respect firearms, and not wave them around like nut making boorish quasi-threats. I didn’t mind Heston when he held up the musket, but this is way over the line, and it will be played a million times in the press if Ted ever were to reach the NRA seat in question. This man can not be the NRA’s PR guy.
