Power to NSC

posted at 9:22 am on January 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The wheels of the bus go round and round, but sometimes they kick things back up in the air.  After having been one of the first people to get tossed under the Obama bus during the primaries, Samantha Power has landed on her feet with a new appointment at the National Security Council.  And lucky for her, one of the perks of the job entails international travel — with the woman she described as a “monster”:

Samantha Power, the Harvard University professor who earned notoriety for calling Hillary Rodham Clinton a “monster” while working to elect Barack Obama president, will take a senior foreign policy job at the White House, The Associated Press has learned.

Officials familiar with the decision say Obama has tapped Power to be senior director for multilateral affairs at the National Security Council, a job that will require close contact and potential travel with Clinton, who is now secretary of state. NSC staffers often accompany the secretary of state on foreign trips. …

Power told the Scotsman newspaper that Clinton would stop at nothing to defeat Obama. “She is a monster, too,” Power said in the interview. “She is stooping to anything.” Power added that “the amount of deceit she has put forward is really unattractive.”

A few hours after her comments were published, Power announced her resignation, saying the remarks were inexcusable and contradictory to her admiration for Clinton.

Think she was a monster as an opponent, Ms. Power?  Wait until Hillary’s your boss.  Supposedly the two women buried the hatchet during the transition process, but perhaps Hillary figured that any contact would be short-lived.

As entertaining as that will likely prove, Power’s appointment should concern supporters of Israel.  In October, I warned that Power would find her way back into the administration, and that her views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict match up much closer to Hamas’ than to most Americans.  She makes reference to the conspiracy-theory canard of a huge Jewish lobby controlling American foreign policy on behalf of Israel — as if we wouldn’t naturally ally with the region’s sole functioning democracy over the last fifty years and oppose radical Islamists for any other reason.

And then Power gives her recipe for solving the conflict by essentially destroying the IDF:

Because, of course, the real problem in the region is the one force on which we can rely to fight the radical Islamists and Iranian proxies of Hamas and Hezbollah. Let’s occupy Israel, disarm the IDF, and fight them ourselves! What a brilliant idea! Only a Harvard professor could come up with something this stupid. And isn’t this the same group of people who spent the last six years screeching about how arrogant and wrong-headed the Iraq War was?

This woman is a foreign-policy disaster.

Netanyahu will probably win the elections in Israel and will do whatever it takes for Israel’s survival no matter what Obama and Power say. But it will get very messy if Iran gets the bomb. Armaggedon days are here again.

drflykilla on January 30, 2009 at 10:10 AM

I definitely think Netanyahu will be elected. Israelis are going to be too frightened to do otherwise, especially with these picks, and the fact that over the next months it’s going to be increasingly obvious that Olmert/Livini fumbled the Hamas war just as badly as the Hizbollah one by stopping short of victory.

wildcat84 on January 30, 2009 at 10:57 AM

I have to laugh at her declaration that Hillary would stoop to any deception to get elected. And Obamessiah has just been the epitomy of openness and honesty, especially as his values are now exemplified in his approach to “bipartisanship” and this so-called stimulus bill.

Power’s appointment to NSC is very telling.

And this is why Hillary Clinton will travel the least of any SOS. She will be so busy trying to cover her back and turf in Washington D. C.

It is quite a yardstick for how left-bent The Chicago Prophet (PBUH) is that Hillary is the hawk on the diplomatic team.

Forget Israel, we will need a major miracle to survive this administration. Obama has no use for American power, the faster he can marginalize this country the better for his agenda. When the “stimulus” fails (by design) the rape of the DoD begins.

The artsy Vogue-ish photograph of Power says everything about the superficiality of the poseurs who now occupy important administration positions. What serious policy person would care to be photographed like a fashion model wannabe?

The Obama Administration is living up to its billing as being all about the hipness of exercising power. This is what The One sold to his slack-jawed army of half-wit supporters, and this is what we’re all going to get.

People in influential diplomatic positions should actually study Islam, its history, read what is actually written in the Koran & hadiths (very scary) and know how these have been historically interpreted by the clerics. But they don’t know Islam, otherwise they would have to realize that there is no peaceful two-state solution possible between Israel and the Muslim Palestinians as a matter of Islamic beliefs & mandates - denials by “moderate” Muslims are lies, perhaps to themselves also but still lies. This impossibility is because the land upon which Israel stands was once part of dar al-Islam and must revert to the Islamic world as a sacred duty for Muslims. Hence, all truces and treaties can only be temporary.

Islam is very clearly a warlike religion of conquest and Muslims as such cannot concede to a permanent Israel, period – as many an Islamic cleric as screamed – and they never have so conceded.

Samantha Power needs to study up & grow up and face the gruesome reality in the mid-East.

Chessplayer on January 30, 2009 at 5:00 PM

Neither one of these women have a clue what they are doing.
Hillary tries to sell herself off as internationally experienced due to dodging sniper fire that never occurred and having tea and biscuits with other countries Reps. while traveling with her husband on Foreign Policy visits:

Senator Clinton’s Claims of Foreign Policy Experience Are Exaggerated
By Greg Craig
To: Interested Parties
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/03/clintons_exaggerated_experienc.html
From: Greg Craig, former director, Policy Planning Office, U.S. State Department

When your entire campaign is based upon a claim of experience, it is important that you have evidence to support that claim. Hillary Clinton’s argument that she has passed “the Commander- in-Chief test” is simply not supported by her record.

But looking at Obama’s far left history and associations with radicals, this country could have done a lot worse than Hillary. Her drive to ensure that she is not upstaged or embarrassed should keep the appeasement meter on half at least.

Powers is an absolute disaster waiting to happen:

Samantha Power and Obama’s Foreign Policy Team
By Richard Baehr and Ed Lasky
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/02/samantha_power_and_obamas_fore_1.html

Also of note is a recent opinion piece Power wrote for TIME, titled “Rethinking Iran,” the thrust of which rethinking involves the need to engage diplomatically the mullahs and pretend that the Iranian nuclear program is a figment of the paranoid imagination of the Bush administration. She writes:

The war scare that wasn’t [the recent incidentbetween Iranian speedboats and the U.S. Navy in the Straight of Hormuz] stands as a metaphor for the incoherence of our policy toward Iran: the Bush Administration attempts to gin up international outrage by making a claim of imminent danger, only to be met with international eye rolling when the claim is disproved. Sound familiar? The speedboat episode bore an uncanny resemblance to the Administration’s allegations about the advanced state of Iran’s weapons program-allegations refuted in December by the National Intelligence Estimate.

That is just one example of the idiocy and apparent truther mentality she possess.

That NIE was politically driven and has been shown to be absolutely wrong in it’s assessments that Iran was not close to having a bomb.
Our enemies must be licking their chops looking at this group that is so ready to blame America first and give them
a basketball and a kiss on the cheek when it comes to their intentions of building WMD/nuclear weapons programs and supporting terrorism.

Mr. President was not listening in church, or Rev. Wright was too dense to explain this. And Soros, the puppet master, just doesn’t care. There are consequences for messing with Israel. God said to Abraham:

2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse…Genesis 12: 2-3

kingsjester on January 30, 2009 at 9:34 AM

You nailed it right on the head but so few people understand this principle that they read right over it without realizing the dire consequences they will suffer when they curse Israel. It doesn’t matter if you believe in God or not. It doesn’t matter if you believe in Israel or not. It does not matter if you are American, Muslim, Black, White, or polka dot. The principle still holds true.

As for me: Jesus, I bless Israel according to your word.

I also ask you bless Israel richly and abundantly for they are your chosen people.

This woman is a prime product of what I call the “Dark Nexus” - a political zone where Neo-Nazis, the Far Left, Islamists and other extremists can put aside their differences and converge – almost to the point of merger.

A Dark Nexus can occur on many issues and the central parties can vary. Don’t expect to see too many Islamists or Neo-Nazis in an environmental Dark Nexus – but you will see Stalinists who become indistinguishable from extreme environmentalists, with a bunch of conspiracy nuts and nude Berkeley bores thrown in to the human soup.

Samantha Power is from the Anti-Israel/Anti-Jew nexus. She’s supposed to be a liberal, but she’s in bed with people who stone gays and make women dress like Darth Vader. And when they all get going it’s hard to tell them apart.

How can someone who’s a political millimetre from David Duke get a position of responsibility and influence in US policy? Easy – her boss is of the same political breed and America was dumb enough to trust that he wouldn’t be. The writing was on the wall.

I don’t believe Israel needs America. Which is just as well, with this sort of anti-semitic/anti-israel nexus forming. Good luck to Hillary, though.
