New Obama tax-evasion scandal: Tom Daschle; Update: Even more evasion!

posted at 8:10 pm on January 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

So far, the incoming Barack Obama administration has given us a tax cheat/incompetent to run the IRS (Tim Geithner) and at least three lobbyists to regulate their industries (William Lynn, Mark Patterson, Neal Wolin).  Now we’re back to tax evasion, and once again it’s a major Cabinet appointment:

ABC News has learned that the nomination of former Senator Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-SD, to be President Obama’s Secretary of Health and Human Services has hit a traffic snarl on its way through the Senate Finance Committee.

The controversy deals with a car and driver lent to Mr. Daschle by a wealthy Democratic friend, a chauffer service the former Senator used for years without declaring their use on his taxes. …

Based in New York City, InterMedia Advisors is a private equity firm founded in part by longtime Daschle friend and Democratic fundraiser, Leo Hindery, the former president of the YES network (the Yankees’ and Devils’ broadcast network).

That same year he began his professional relationship with InterMedia 2005, Mr. Daschle began using the services of Hindery’s car and driver.

The Cadillac and driver were never part of Daschle’s official compensation package at InterMedia but Mr. Daschle — who as Senate Majority Leader enjoyed the use of a car and driver at taxpayer expense — didn’t declare their services on his income taxes, as tax laws require.

Daschle’s team claims that the former Senator deserves the credit for revealing the problem himself.  Daschle did report this — but only after getting picked as HHS Secretary.  If that sounds familiar, it’s because that’s when Geithner suddenly discovered that he owed Uncle Sam money too, only Daschle paid back a lot more: over $100,000.

How many more people will Obama nominate who either are too incompetent or too dishonest to declare all of their income and pay all of their taxes?  Is this the new career track for tax cheats — a Cabinet office?

Update: Apparently, Daschle can’t even use the Geithner “I’m so stupid” excuse, as ABC also discovers that he flat-out failed to report direct income:

The report indicates that Daschle’s failure to pay more than $101,000 taxes on the car and driver a wealthy friend let him use from 2005 through 2007 is not the only tax issue the former Senate Majority Leader has been dealing with since his December nomination prompted a more thorough examination of his income tax returns.

Mr. Daschle also didn’t report $83,333 in consulting income in 2007.

Plus, Daschle claimed almost $15,000 in charitable donations over three years to organizations that don’t qualify for the deduction.

How many Americans make so much money that they could forget about $83,000 of it in a year?

Don’t forget Chris Dodd. It’s now been over 6 months since he said he would release his mortgage papers to put the sweetheart deal controversy to rest.

He says he can’t find them. He should ask Hillary. Maybe there on her coffee table next to her billing records.

Or with the State Department secret documents that Sandy Berger stuffed in his socks and then couldn’t remember what happened to them so they could be returned.

Be careful what you wish for. Daschle is not in favor of the more leftwing version of national healthcare, specifically, he doesn’t want single payer system. I wouldn’t be surprised if his replacement (if not confirmed) came from further to the left. I’m surprised at the lack of tax vetting that was done by the Obama team. Get it together John Podesta.

I agree, but I don’t think it’s accidental – it’s purposeful. Doing this rids ‘O’ of his rival power structure. I’ve wondered about his choices, but with Hill and Biden out of the senate, and major voices from the party discredited, he can lead from a blank slate and make the party whatever he wants it to be.

I expect more shenanigans to be exposed.

Daschle is the poster boy of what’s wrong with this country….More people would know this if he wasn’t such a passive/passive poof.

Oh, Liberals are now recommending we take the lesser of evils with their crooks because it might be in our best interest. Er, okay. By what Nancy Peloski has said over the last two years about cultures of corruption in the Republican Party and having the “most ethical” government evah in store for us and by what B Hussein Obama said during the campaign about transparency I would have thought that meant you guys had a bunch of were actually going to appoint honest people.

And are you really surprised what these amateur are capable of? If I were a Liberal Dem, I’d always consider the favorable factor if I were going to consider something illegal.

How quickly was the media movement against Tom Delay?

How long has William J. “Cold Cash” Jefferson been under investigation, without findings? The Dems let his situation go clear to an election in hopes he’d win and they could replace him with another Dem. Rangel, Conyers, the list goes on and on.

When guys like you are acting a little indignant now because of a “lack of vetting” by Podesta I literally roll my eyes. This is what you voted for. This is who these people are. If the media covered both sides fairly, we’d know even more about them.

One Clown (Obama) opens the door, and a bunch of clowns (Harry Reid, Geithner, Pelosi, Porkulous Bill, Attack on Rush, Obama’s half-brother, Rangel’s wife, Blago, Rahm’s morning phone calls) keep coming out.

I could see this being the case with Richardson, Obama never really wanted him anywhere near the Administration and now, with Congress in session it seems he’s going to appoint Gregg from NH giving the Dems 60 seats, a pretty brilliant move. Though an unnecessary once since Snowe and Collins are pretty much voting as Democrats (and considering how much Obama won their states by, do you blame them).

But with Daschle? Unlikely. Obama’s big staffers, Alexrod, Plouffe and Hildebrand all have history with Daschle as do people like Bill Burton. There’s too much Daschle machine in the Obama machine for him to just throw him overboard and the guy worked tirelessly on the campaign trail. No, Obama wanted Daschle around, but we’ll see what happens.

Before the inauguration the MSM couldn’t stop telling us what a seamlessly smooth transition was taking place, demonstrating how marvelously competent we could expect the Obama team to perform in the future. The image: a beautiful, perfect cast of a fishing line.

Ten days later, as the cast is being reeled back in, it’s nothing but a huge, wadded snarl of line that the entire White House staff is trying to disentangle, but can’t.

Incompetence and poor judgment is popping up everywhere–cabinet appointments, stimulus bill, letters to Iran, closing of Gitmo with no plan, picking a fight with a radio personality . . . (somebody finish this list, I’ve got to get another cup of coffee)

Some states have laws that require the Governor to appoint a member of the same party of a retiring/appointed Senator. N.H. is not one of those states. And if you’re suggesting that a Republican would “honor” the seat if the situation was reversed you’re a silly partisan hack.

I think many somewhat smart people are running around convincing others that the world really consists of a lot of grey and that they are simply working within that large grey.

I guess I’m pretty simple-minded because I see a lot more black and white. Whichever color marks the wrong and evil, Daschle and Geithner and the Wall Street bonus recipients are the most recent examples that have come to light. And Obama will be our ongoing example for at least four years.

Screw nuance. I’ll take some commonsense straight shooting. Give me leaders such as Palin and Cantor and Pence and Paul Ryan and Jon Kyl and some others who seem willing to take a two-by-four and club corruption in the face.

Nobody is too valuable to exclude when they’ve done wrong.

No sweat. I think you hit both the quote button and the strike button.

At any rate, I “read through the lines,” so to speak, and I agree. I think it starts with ourselves–to be personally responsible. And once that’s established, we can call others out.

To be sure, we need to be mindful of hypocrisy, on one hand, and casting judgmental stones, on the other hand. But in the case of casting stones, the woman at the well was actually repentant. I don’t regard, for example, Geithner and Daschle as repentant. These guys came forward only after they were under a microscope, and they confessed nothing.

The minute I hear Geithner and Daschle admit that they tried to pull one over on the IRS, then I’ll forgive them. But they’ve both stopped far short of that kind of full confession. But assuming such a confession, it doesn’t entitle them to a Cabinet appointment, because they aren’t entitled to “cheap grace.” They can go establish a track record for character and integrity and then return for consideration in another administration. Until then, they’re turds.

Single payer = the Government. As in the Government decides what is a reasonable price for a health care provider to charge for a service, the Government decides who is eligible to receive what health care services (and who is not eligible), etc. The Government gets to do this because the Government is the sole entity paying for the health care services.

Sen. Tom Daschle, President Obama’s nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services, reportedly received $220,000 in speaking fees from health care groups with a vested interest in the work he would do once confirmed as health chief.

hawkdriver on January 31, 2009 at 11:46 AM

Yeah, I did. And I’m still waiting for a fricking answer. It’s like watching Joseph McCarthy yelling, “I’ve got names.”

sethstorm, if we can interrupt your cartoons for a link, put up or shut up.

And for the last time, I haven’t read a news report where a Republican under consideration for a Cabinet post is being asked about his or her use of tax havens.

Your problems raise a larger point. A significant problem with liberals is their complete inability to deal with analogies. Their notion of moral equivalence is completely illogical. An example is Obama’s hokey race speech. He told us that his grandmother’s conduct was the moral equivalent of Wright’s rantings 50 weeks a year for more than 20 years. A woman whose racial insensitivity was the product of an earlier generation versus a “man of God” who poisoned minds and hearts for years with hate and even lies. C’mon, get serious.

BuckeyeSam on January 31, 2009 at 12:00 PM

Consulting income likely is self-employment, as Geirthner’s stint at IMF. This old CPA wonders if Little Tommy paid his self-employment taxes or did he “forget” those, also.

Harry Schell on January 31, 2009 at 11:43 AM

I was wondering about that too. Wouldn’t he have received 1099 forms from firms that paid him for consulting work?

AZCoyote on January 31, 2009 at 12:00 PM

For payors, it’s a only $50 failure to file penalty if they don’t issue a Form 1099. How much you want to bet that they checks got written, but the accounting department was told to run it through as some kind of miscellaneous expense that wouldn’t trigger any Form 1099 reporting. After all, these clowns who hired Daschle were friends of his. He’s a snively loser; I hope he gets crucified.

In fact, given the omission, the IRS should audit the guy, bank records, the whole bit–a bona fide financial rectal exam.

The liberals have a problem with basic morality and simple truth. Those two things are merely what they decide they are at the moment. Thus the endless “You guys are just as bad! No, a hundred times WORSE!!!!!!” crap.

Obama Tax Cuts Cutters

From the president who refused to produce his own documentation for scrutiny, more of the same.

And Obama says YEARS not months to economically recover from his election, given his “stimulus” newspeak Socialist purchase of our packaged government at the expense of our Constitutional rule of law, liberty, and prosperity.

DrStock on January 31, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Daschle is compleley typical of the Washington revolving-door crowd. That’s what is so depressing. I realize that many very capable and talented Democrats have stayed in Washington after leaving Congress, but they almost invariably get sucked into the money game and end up like Daschle, with papered-over lobbying deals, unreported “consulting” income, exorbitant speaking fees. It is a non-partisan culture of corruption that is very real.

One of the true attractions of Barack Obama was that he had not been in Washington long enough to get sucked into this game, and so he might actually do some things to put an end to it. Guess not. He is rewarding its worst practitioners.

I would rather have a Cabinet full of small town mayors from around the country (even Alaska, cough cough) than one full of Tom Daschles and Eric Holders.

They are following corporate’s example of not paying taxes.

Yes, the same folks that gambled and lost huge, took our money to save their sorry companies, then used that money for bonuses.

It’s the Chicago way: “Your friends may be crooked or not, but they are still your friends.” As long as they are not yet in jail, what’s the worry? Get use to it folks, it’s going to be a long 4 years.

Plus, Daschle claimed almost $15,000 in charitable donations over three years to organizations that don’t qualify for the deduction.

How many Americans make so much money that they could forget about $83,000 of it in a year?

Darn, I need to hire Mr. Daschle’s tax man.

Senator Douchebag:
Please answer one question please. Why would a person making 2 million dollars a year want to give up that income and all your perks to go back into govt. service? Could it just be that since your wife is a lobbiest that the influence you can peddle her way will make you soooo much more moola then what you are already getting from your first kick at the can as a senator from North Dakota. You truly are a piece of work! You are living proof that corruption pays as one can’t say that crime pays as your a professional politician for you guys its all about the “culture of corruption” and wink wink everyboby knows that all politicians do it and expect us to do it.
What a joke. I hope you are charged with evading income tax and thrown into jail for the max.

prediction. If this gets worse for Daschle, we’ll hear Obama say “this is not the Obama I knew”.

hawksruleva on January 31, 2009 at 7:37 PM

Rangle-Geithner-Daschle amendment inbound. Any crony of the “dear leader” is considered a national hero and pays taxes only voluntarily – at an amount the individual deems appropriate.

Lost tax revenues can always be recouped from Republican voters – until they’re all jailed that is.

HondaV65 on January 31, 2009 at 7:42 PM

And the President tells us that Wall Street bonuses are “shameful”? I thought Joe Biden said paying your taxes is patriotic, so not paying your taxes is what?

Mr. Joe on January 31, 2009 at 7:46 PM

It is just so so so wrong about this. These stinking Democrats who live their lives to increase our taxes and rob us of our wealth and here they are not paying their own filthy taxes!!!
They should go to prison for life! I am not a fan of Zero tolerance in schools. However,,, zero tolerance for politicians who are tax cheats may be a good idea. If you get caught and it’s more than a few hundred dollars of back taxes,,, you go to jail. If it’s in the thousands and you have spent your life raising other peoples taxes you go to jail for life! If you sat on a committee writing tax rules and you get caught not paying tens of thousands in back taxes it’s death row!

How many more people will Obama nominate who either are too incompetent or too dishonest to declare all of their income and pay all of their taxes? Is this the new career track for tax cheats — a Cabinet office?

When is the effing Senate going to stop giving the filthy bastard a rubber stamp on nominations? The administration has proven itself unethical and unfit for office (in just two weeks!) Each and every one of filthy bastard’s choices need to be fully vetted and not confirmed when they prove to be tax cheats.
