Flashback: U.S. apologized to Iran in 2000 for past actions

posted at 4:52 pm on January 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’m embarrassed to say I forgot about this when I wrote that post about Ahmadinejad demanding an apology from The One. Or did I just repress the memory?

I wonder if the mullahs remember and simply want us to grovel again. To let them know we really mean it this time.

The Clinton Administration tried this tactic. President Clinton confessed in “unprompted” remarks that “Iran … has been the subject of quite a lot of abuse from various Western nations. And I think sometimes it’s quite important to tell people, look, you have a right to be angry at something my country or my culture or others that are generally allied with us today did to you 50 or 60 or 150 years ago.”

Then in 2000, at a state dinner in Washington, Secretary of State Madeline Albright directly apologized for specific past American actions toward Iran, from our role in orchestrating the overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddeq, to our backing of the Shah, to our backing of Iraq in its war with Iran. Albright also highlighted President Clinton’s personal belief that America “must bear its full share of responsibility for the problems that have arisen in U.S.-Iranian relations.”

The bit about Albright comes from this old page-one LA Times story, lest you doubt its veracity. I’m strangely glad to find out we’ve been down this road before: Not only does it increase pressure on Obama not to repeat the gesture, but it’s a neat microcosm of how long and fruitless the “dialogue” has been. How keenly aware of that is he? Maybe more keenly than we think.

Here’s a timely reminder of the mindset we’ll soon be engaging. Could be worse, I guess.

When is the US going to apolgize to US citizens for not laying waste to Tehran after they took our embassy personnel hostage, or after they blew up our marines in Lebanon, or after they blew up our embassy in Lebanon, or after … ?

At some point will the US feel obligated to US citizens more than to the citizens of enemy countries?

progressoverpeace on January 30, 2009 at 4:55 PM

I apologize for America– not having put you in shackles at Patrice Lumumba West Columbia University and put you on trial for your crimes against us.

Obambi will apologize, after all, this is the Clinton third term.

Yes. In 2013, if we’re lucky.

I expect even more groveling from Osama Obama than from Bubba and Maddie combined. Even more than if you add Jimmuh into their total.

MrScribbler on January 30, 2009 at 4:58 PM

I completely forgot this Clintonian gesture, too.

Reason # 3,412,862 that I miss Dubya.

This sort of thing just wasn’t the Gunslinger-in-Chief’s style.

At this point, I’d be happy to forget all that in exchange for an apology for STILL allowing Iran to arm and train the insurgents in Iraq and our enemies in Lebanon and Syria.

They’re waging a proxy war against us and we’re pretending its not happening. But the men on the ground know.

Professor Blather on January 30, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Trust me Allah, we’re more embarrassed to learn that it actually occurred.

groveling before the crazy mullahs always works

The US was right to apologize for some of the past actions. They did it once… no need to do it again.

The puerile demand for another apology should be ignored. That does not mean there is not room for improvement in relations.

I wish that the Iranians were demanding an apology for us actually having laid waste to Tehran for the hostage crisis.

But don’t worry folks, soon President Opologize will be telling everyone how sorry he is that America even exists.

Yes. It is going to be ugly and stupid for as long as our new Precedent stays in office. It will be up to Israel to do what’s right, I guess, as we are out of the game, now. I wouldn’t be surprised if BHO signs some neato nuke deals with Iran, or just starts giving them cash, outright.

At this point, I’d be happy to forget all that in exchange for an apology for STILL allowing Iran to arm and train the insurgents in Iraq and our enemies in Lebanon and Syria.

Professor Blather on January 30, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Right on, Professor. I’d also be willing to forget our past mistakes with respect to Iran if we would just get it right, now. What we let them do in Iraq was totally unconscionable, especially as we had specific reasons to come down on Iran and stop their nuke program.

progressoverpeace on January 30, 2009 at 5:06 PM

Can’t the federal government make a law, requiring every “non-person-of-color” American to apologize for slavery, and for America’s intransigence to Iran, every day?

Isn’t there something that can be done?

OhEssYouCowboys on January 30, 2009 at 5:06 PM

Groveling before the Islamacists merely shows we have no backbone…and this is what they want. When Clinton/Albright groveled, it got what results? Anyone?

So what that they complain, or make nasty negative political commentary about the United States? What this shows is that we are indeed a major thorn in their side as they try to push the Euros and the American Left to join the new Caliphate, and so long as we are a thorn in their side, they are worried that we will take them at their word one of these days, and then they’ll come to understand first-hand that 10th Century Islamic world they seem to sorely desire.

Apologize? For what?

I’ll apologize for us being stupid enough to elect Jimmy Carter, and therefore allowing you to get into power, and I’ll apologize for us being stupid enough to elect Clinton, so he could make a stupid unnecessary apology, but that is as far as I will go.

Well stated, I’m sick and tired of our government (mostly the liberal left demo-craps) being dihmmis to these hateful and murderng sacks of shiite!

We need to stop apologizing for being freedom loving people and start slapping the hatred out of the fascist death cult that is Islam. Our government needs to start crushing them with extreme prejudice until they reform or surrender their death cult fascist ways…no if’s, and’s, buts, or apologies about it…OUR GOVERNMENT’S MAIN JOB AND FIRST PRIORTY IS TO PROTECT THE REPUBLIC AND ITS CITIZENS…SO JUST DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE ALREADY!

lexhamfox on January 30, 2009 at 5:05 PM

The only thing an apology or negotiation will accomplish is to make us look like weak dihmmi’s in their eyes and all the negotiating for past 40 years hasn’t accomplished shiite and the reason is their goal isn’t peaceful co-existence with the West but rather a world rule under Sharia law, therefore when one side of the negotiating table has an agenda that they are unwilling to compromise on (e.g., the world ruled under Sharia law) then any negotiations are a moot point and that is something many (for whatever reason) unwilling to come to terms with.

Iran, Hamas, AQ, fascist Islam, et al are like the Terminator, they cannot be negotiated or reasoned with and we need to face this reality soon and do what has needed to be done for the last 40 years before it’s too late!

Liberty or Death on January 30, 2009 at 5:40 PM

President Clinton confessed in “unprompted” remarks that “Iran … has been the subject of quite a lot of abuse from various Western nations.

Yeah, and that worked wonders didn’t it, Iran has been respectful ever since.

Dear Iranians,
We apologize to you for letting president Carter let the shah get kicked out of power. We should have propped him up until you were able to elect a a mature government to replace him instead of allowing a thugocracy to take over. If you want we will fix this mistake so we can be friends in the future.

The note should read: “next time you take American hostages, kill our service people by proxy (Lebanon and Iraq) because you’re cowards we will turn your country into one big sheet of glass and let pigs deficate on what used to be your nation…ooops…what am I thinking…pity you won’t be able to read this note as you’ll have been vaporized and are now nothing more than a bad memory and a shadow on a wall!!”

My bad….muahahahahaha!

***
I remember reading about the Islamic “student” takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran 30 years ago. An armed guard (U.S. Marine probably) had been ordered not to fire his weapon (shotgun) at the mob that broke down the door and surged into the embassy. He let them take the gun and shoot him instead.
***
As an ex Army draftee I would have said, “Screw that order!” and would have started stacking up the bodies in the hallway. And would have been praying for backup or more shotgun shells.
***
Yes–kissing their A**ES really worked out quite well. Thank you Jimmy Carter–and now Jimmy Carter II (aka “Messiah”) wants to try the same approach.

Maquis on January 30, 2009 at 6:15 PM

So Lord BJ apologized to Iran back in 2000.

How has that worked out so far?

Vic on January 30, 2009 at 6:43 PM

Dear Ahmeduchebag,

I wanted to write and express by most sincere apologies for the 56% of our country that is so fascinated with shiny objects, obsessed with American Idol and otherwise brain dead that they elected a terrorist-loving, Chicago criminal that does not have enough experience to be elected dog catcher, much less POTUS. I am profoundly sorry that this failure in our media and electoral process has allowed this to happen. I regret that this error has caused you confusion and lead you to believe that we actually give a damn what terrorists like yourself, who are directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans over the past several decades, thinks. In addition, I am profoundly sorry that we’ve spent so long trying to appeal to your clearly non-existent sense of decency or concern for human life and rights.

Rest assured that it is my sincere intention to do everything possible to rectify these past errors on our part. Therefore, effective immediately, we are ceasing any consideration of you as a human being, or even a creature worthy to breathe the same air as all the decent and reasonable people on this planet.

The bombing will commence in 5 minutes (minus the time it takes you to read this letter).

Sincerely,

Damiano

PS- hope you enjoy your 72 virgins… my bet is that where you are going, they will be sex staved men named Bubba who have spent eternity waiting for your rank ass to show up.

Uh, so is overthrowing a secular democratic government and installing a kleptocratic dictatorship in its place something to not be ashamed of?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_Iranian_coup_d'%C3%A9tat

AJB on January 30, 2009 at 8:38 PM

The U.S overthrew the first attempt of democracy in the middle east, installed the Shah who murdered thousands of political prisoners.
The U.S. gave him economic, military and political backing at a time he was cooking opponents alive on stroves.

The U.S trained the brutal police -Savak ,who used torture and other brutal acts to suppress any dissent to the dictator.

This led to the iranian revolution, they took American hostages in case the U.S tried to bring the Shah back ,to have something to bargain with.

U.S support for Iraq to invade Iran, the aggressor, providing them with intelligence, weapons, money including chemical weapons that were used against the iranian civilian population .
It was one of the most horrific wars ever. Dramatic increase in fetal abnormalities for the poor women affected by chemical warfare.

Then there is the shooting down of Iranian flight 655.
A civilian plane killing 290 including 66 children.

You must see how they might be annoyed.
