The Age of Obama: Heat for me, but not for thee

posted at 10:44 am on January 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Last week, Barack Obama caused quite a stir when he allowed himself to be photographed in the Oval Office without wearing a suit jacket, ending the Bush tradition of coat-and-tie for the West Wing.  The New York Times reports on how Obama made that possible during a colder-than-usual Washington winter.  All Obama did was turn up the thermostat to Hawaii hothouse levels:

The capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.

“He’s from Hawaii, O.K.?” said Mr. Obama’s senior adviser, David Axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. “He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”

Thus did a rule of the George W. Bush administration — coat and tie in the Oval Office at all times — fall by the wayside, only the first of many signs that a more informal culture is growing up in the White House under new management. Mr. Obama promised to bring change to Washington and he has — not just in substance, but in presidential style.

And thus did the Times fall down on the job yet again in the Age of Obama.  While candidate Obama talked endlessly of the need for energy conservation and limits on the use of fuels that produce so-called greenhouse gases, President Obama has no trouble heating the White House for himself to greenhouse levels, according to David Axelrod.  Did the Times even note the hypocrisy, or at the very least the incongruity, in its report on Obama’s White House?  Not at all.

Many people in America, especially where I live, would like to heat their homes to a comfort level where sweaters and coats become unnecessary.  However, Obama and the Democrats want to impose ruinous taxes and penalties on energy production and fuel that produces carbon dioxide — a naturally-occurring element — and make that choice economically unbearable for us.  In fact, candidate Obama spoke directly to that end in May of this year:

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.

“That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.

Well, apparently some of us can, and those lucky few do call themselves “leaders”.  The rest of us call them hypocrites as we fetch another sweater.

We live in Concord, CA – CONCORD, CA!

Lovely Concord, California, home base for one of the ships I was stationed on in the Navy.

Any nuclear weapons protesters lose their legs recently while laying on the train tracks heading into the base?

DamnCat on January 29, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Ah. HYPOCRITE! Well I am not surprised.
I am lucky enough to be able to heat my home in the winter to a sweltering 85 degrees or more.
But I use wood I cut from the river I live on. I am therefore release a larger carbon footprint I suppose, but it’s free except for my labor & I am self sufficient & don’t have to depend upon charity to heat my home, like LIHEAP etc.
When I’m not running my wood stove in the winter,(propane heat) I keep the temp at 68 or so. When the ND wind howls, I burn the wood.
Simple.
Obama needs to cut some wood.

Obama approaches a window of the Oval Office, instead of the door, shown to the right.

It looks like President Obama hasn’t gotten acquainted to his White House surroundings. On the way back to the Oval Office Tuesday, the President approached a paned window, instead of the actual door — located a few feet to his right.

At what point did these idiots not think that using hollywood, living in mansions, flying around in private jets, and having none of their eco-fundamentalist predictions coming true was not going to catch up with them.

lorien1973 on January 29, 2009 at 10:52 AM

This is very post worthy for obvious reasons. Various laws will be passed that will raise the price of energy and the cost of doing business. Meanwhile, Obama sets his ownthermostat to orchid friendly temperatures.

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.

“That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added. — Hypocrite-in-Chief

I live in CT, and got snookered into a heating-oil company who sets the contract price in July for year through the following June. I’m stuck paying $4.50/gallon ALL YEAR during an unusually cold winter while the market price is about $2.50, so MY thermostat is set to 61 degrees (although it’s warmer than that in the bedrooms).

Welcome to my humble abode, Barry O! You could parade around here shirtless if you’re willing to pay the heating bills! Maybe you could take it out of the $300K you saved on your mansion in Chicago!

Steve Z on January 29, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Axelrod is a tool. Obama may have been born in Hawaii, but he’s been representing the people of the great state of Illinois for how many years now? Does that mean that Obama has been cranking the heat in his Illinois home for years on end, just so that he can be reminded of his Hawaii upbringing?

Sheesh.

He has lived up to his statement. The Oval Office thermostat is no longer on 72 at all times. In the winter, now, it is on 84. Promise kept. We expect it to be on 58 during the summer.

Hehe, yep I thought the same thing, they look like monks! I especially laugh at the commercial when they show the family wearing them outdoors at a game; the family looked like they came straight from the monastery!

Oh and the “one size fits all” is laughable as well, when the young girl at the game puts her arms up half the sleeve is dangling down…what a joke, just like Obamabi, a hypocritical joke!

That is why this story is worthy of posting Lorien, especially since if it were Bush instead of THE ONE doing this the left would be up in arms over it screaming about how it’s proof Bush is not only an evil war monger but he’s waging war on the environment, that is when he’s not kicking or juggling kittens!

Maybe we should have a law passed for Global warming costs increases similar to this one being brought forth concerning the corrupt tax cheating by democrats:

LEGISLATING A NEW “RANGEL RULE:”

http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NDQ2NjlmZmRiOTQzODNhYzMxMjJiNzY1OWQxZDhjODA=

All U.S. taxpayers would enjoy the same immunity from IRS penalties and interest as House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY) and Obama Administration Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, if a bill introduced today by Congressman John Carter (R-TX) becomes law.

Carter, a former longtime Texas judge, today introduced the Rangel Rule Act of 2009, HR 735, which would prohibit the Internal Revenue Service from charging penalties and interest on back taxes against U.S. citizens. Under the proposed law, any taxpayer who wrote “Rangel Rule” on their return when paying back taxes would be immune from penalties and interest.

(via instapundit)

We could have a rule that states we don’t have to follow any Global Warming penalties or fees unless the lawmakers that put them forth and the celebrities that push for there
implementation follow them two.

I demand
Equal carbon contribution and representation!!!!

America Held Hostage: The Obama Presidency, Day 14.

We have three years and fifty weeks more of this hypocrit sitting in an overheated Oval Office. I predict the Obummer will have a serious and precipitous fall from the Fellatio Media’s good graces (and lips). It will leave Obummer stuttering more than his usual eloquent self, maybe even reprising the Lady Macbeth role, wandering from hot room to hot room in the White House muttering, “Out damn spot.” Or maybe even a revival of Richard Nixon’s paranoia, but with four years of tapes erased (if they bother to record any details of anything at all).

The ‘he’s from Hawaii’ comment shows the Dems can say anything they want, anything, and get away with it. Our Fellatio Media doing the hard hitting stories no one else will touch.

I’m sorry for you but I really don’t understand why you would lock in a price that high. We chose not to do a contract for the last year, knowing the nature of bubbles – betting the price would go down instead of up. I pay around $2.50 a gallon now and I won’t do a contract until the price is around $1.50, which it will be again (until hyperinflation hits that is).

Just tried to unsuccessfully post this at NY Slimes comment section. They must have found it conveniently off-topic or “abusive” amongst all the cloying, zombie-like ‘gee, we love how comfy Obama(that adorable hothouse flower) is in his own skin’ comments:

Because of high heating costs, my thermostat is set at 60 degrees, and will probably need to go lower as the cold weather increases. I wear at least four layers of clothes to stay warm, and don’t heat my bedroom at all. So, I was completely disgusted to read that I’m paying taxes so Obama can pump up the White house thermostat to “orchid” raising warmth – so he can sit like royalty in his shirt sleeves! That Axelrod would try to make a dumb joke out of this is inexcusably insensitive to those of us who are suffering from the cold. Obama: Suffering for thee (you stupid Americans), but not for insufferably snotty me.

Dude, you are on fire! So to speak.

baldilocks on January 29, 2009 at 1:41 PM

here is a sure way to make money in any bar

Just find out when the Goricle is goig to make a speech about global warming and you can rest assured that
their will be a snow storm

but if its anywhere near
A bunch of liberal senators or enviromnentalists
you can be guaranteed the temerature will drop by another 10 degrees and it will asolutly freeze

But to make real money on this bet
you add into the equasion
If Al gore conference + liberal senators + environmentalist wakos && President Obama (are within a 10 mile radius)
then Temperature >= 20 degrees && for Each (1 mile closer to center) that all participants are closer the temperate will drop an addition 2 degrees

So using this formula
Each time they schedule a global warming conference
Depending upon how many liberals show up
Depending upon how many liberal senators show up
If the enviromental wakos show up
AND President obama is within a 10 mile radius

Then the outer temerature at the radius edge will be
> 32 degrees guaranteed.
The temerature at 1/2 radius will be > 27 degrees
The temperature at the center of the conference will be > 22 degrees

hey i want 1/2 of all profits for this formula if you use it
in any baroom bet and you win..

When the heat is on
Some feel the heat and decide that
They can´t go on
Some like it hot, but you can´t tell how hot
Til you try
Some like it hot, so let´s turn up the heat
On Til the One in the White House does fry

Parents certainly influence their child’s behavior. Could explain why the Bush twins spent years falling down drunk.

I couldn’t agree more, college girls using fake IDs to drink is so out of the norm that we should have stoned them in the village square. But I guess to put a positive spin on it, despite their unusual behavior they did manage to graduate, much to the dismay of all their fellow students none of which ever touched alcohol, I’m sure.

Yet another post in which Mr. Hardapple does not defend Obama’s hypocritical behavior, but instead chooses to take a few more whacks at the left’s pinata of choice.

Keep digging. I’m sure your fingers will scrape the bottom of that barrel eventually.

MB4 your poem made me think…

What if the reason Obama turned the heat up is so he could have an excuse as to why he’s sweating so much. I mean it would look kind of odd if the thermostat was set at 60 or 65 and then you look over at Obama and he’s sweating bullets.

Aren’t they bored of that yet? Talking about bitter clingers.

Have you heard any rumors about how the smoke detectors in the Oval Office have been turned off?

MB4 on January 29, 2009 at 2:12 PM

A suit and tie is a symbol of respect. Both Reagan and Bush would not enter the oval office without them. Mull on that.

Typical limousine liberal.

Honestly, if Obama was trying to fix the economy by using the Austrian school of Economics principles, he could go to work naked every day and I wouldn’t care.

In writing to my Dem Senator about the “stimulus” package which includes some global warming payout, I included this item. It hit the news just in time for me to send it in to him.
