By his logic, we’d have smaller government if we just jailed people for smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol. Right.

I have a friend who was a cop in L.A. for 25 years. I asked him once what the source of most of the calls he got called out on were, and he said “domestic violence.” Also said it went both ways: male on female, and female on male.

Out of curiosity, I then asked what was the major factor in most of the incidents, and he said “alcohol.” Following up that, I asked if there were ever any incidents of domestic violence brought on or made worse due to marijuana as a factor. Without missing a beat, he said “never.” And this is a guy who is personally vehemently opposed to legalizing pot.

Sure it’s anecdotal, but it is telling. Go figure…

Depends on the drug, but otherwise your point is solid.

Drug addiction is bad for everyone who comes in contact with the addict.

And, it is our duty to help those addicted, not pass laws that enable the vice and make them shrivel to nothing.

Alcoholism imposes a far more devastating social cost than drug-taking. Unless one supports restoring prohibition, it’s incoherent to reason from “bad for everyone” to “ban the activity”.

Seriously? This is a debate worth intelligent responses. There are good arguments on both sides, so there’s no reason to start with the insults. That’s nearly always true here, but this one in particular seemed to come out of nowhere.

Plus, not all people who use drugs are addicts, just as not all people who drink become drunks and not all people who consume caffeine have the desire to mainline Jolt (Cherry Jolt’s my fave).

Personally, I’m more in favor of decriminalization if only because I don’t want drug use out in the open, nor do I want drug users jailed. I don’t believe either is beneficial to society.

He clearly has balls like church bells to withstand the kind of liberal echo chamber he lives within.

On the other hand, there’s MJ, which you couldn’t OD on if smoked all day and all night for years. Can’t really see that one being illegal.
