Obama to Washingtonians: Toughen up, pansies
posted at 1:30 pm on January 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Here in the frozen wasteland of the Upper Midwest, we know how to clear streets even during blizzards to ensure that traffic continues and schools can stay open. In Chicago, where the lake effect creates huge dumps of snow in cold winters, they have the same expertise. However, ice storms are another matter entirely. Schools close as people want to keep children off the roads and traffic to a minimum while the streets remain dangerous. That’s one of the few appropriate times we can say that it’s all about the children.
Or at least it used to be. Barack Obama today told Washingtonians they needed to toughen up and send their kids to school when the roads ice over:
The suburban schools systems and many private schools in the region were closed today and the District public schools opted for a delayed opening because of the sleet and freezing rain that made some roads and many sidewalks treacherous.
“Because of what? Because of some ice?” Obama said to laughter around the table. He said Sasha, his 7-year-old, pointed out that in Chicago, not only is school never canceled for snow, “you’d go outside for recess. You wouldn’t even stay indoors.”
He concluded by saying: “We’re going to have to apply some flinty Chicago toughness to this town. I’m saying that when it comes to the weather, folks in Washington don’t seem to be able to handle things.”
Spoken like a true Hawaiian. Schools don’t close for snow in Chicago and Minneapolis because we have large infrastructures to deal with the reliably heavy snowfalls in our communities. That’s not the case in many areas socked in this week by snowstorms stretching from St. Louis to Schenectady and beyond. An unplowed inch or two of snow on the ground means a lot of accidents in areas unused to that kind of weather, and for that matter here as well.
An ice storm, with a sheet of tractionless ice on the road, practically guarantees accidents by the scores, if not by the hundreds. It would close schools here and in Chicago as well.
And this is the man who wants to tell us what the weather means and why we have to completely revamp our energy production because some years are hotter than others?
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

We had 3 closures last Nov & Dec alone here in SW ND bcs of ice. ND is a cold place-colder than Chicago by far on avg.
Evidently we love our children more here in ND than DC must if they go by Obama.

You mean they haven’t called in FEMA yet? It is a national emergency, oh the humanity!
deadbackpacker on January 28, 2009 at 1:35 PM
Proof of cluelessness –
We just had a major snowfall here in my town. While snowfall is common here LARGE amounts aren’t. The city keeps enough equipment/salt on hand to handle the average snowfall (and must ration use of the salt to keep throughout the season). So today was a mess.
Large amounts of snow in Chicago is a fact of life. The city pays a huge amount of its budget for street clearing.
DC gets little snowfall. It makes no fiscal sense to maintain a fleet of trucks and a storage facility plus salt for a day or two of snow per year, which melts by the end of the day.
If Obama had just been making a joke (like I do of my Florida relatives when they go nuts when it gets near 32 degrees.. OH MY!) I could understand. But this wasn’t a joke. This was clueless arrogance.

I wish my street got plowed. We just had another 6 inches on top of packed down, turned to slush and now refrozen snow. I wound up getting stuck at lunchtime right outside my house. Snow I can deal with; ice, not.
I remember seeing a clip from Bastogne, where an American Sherman tank was sliding down the street due to ice.

We are in IL and they closed the schools for the past 2 days. I am not sure they are doing it because they are pansies but last year my son’s school district was the only ones that had school. The school was bombarded by the media as to why they didn’t close and that they didn’t care for the kids. Now his school always closes when the other schools close. They are afraid of being sued by parents if anything happens to their kids. The parents don’t want their kids out in this weather. I don’t blame the schools anymore after this incident last year I blame the media and the parents for their stupidity. There is no reason why kids can’t go to school with an inch of snow. It’s stupid.
Brat4life on January 28, 2009 at 1:40 PM
Nothing is a “joke” when it comes to Osama Obama. Except the man himself, and that’s a sick joke.
Just another example of the ol’ double-standard. If Bush had said such a thing, the libs would scream like pierced porkers. When we point out that the Messiah is being stupid — and that’s becoming a more-than fulltime job — we are supposed to “lighten up.”
Let Obama be the first to go out and drive himself around on the icy roads, walk on the icy sidewalks, challenge the cold weather. Isn’t that what “leaders” are supposed to do?
Hell, I forgot, Just ask him to smile on the city, and the warmth of His Presence will surely melt all that pesky ice.

Yeah, I grew up going to school in Whitehorse, YT, and Edmonton, AB, and not much closed the schools (a week of -50′ Celcius did it once in Whitehorse in early 1980), so on the one hand, I see his point (besides the one on top of his head). But later living in BC’s Lower Mainland showed me how inclement weather can grind a city to a halt.

Hey, I’m with Obama on this one. I lived in the DC area for 20 years, and it’s a running joke there how quickly they will cancel school. It’s a real pain in the ass for working families too. I had a boss when my kids were little who had no kids and was very intolerant of me needing a day off to stay home with mine.

As a matter of fact they may be disappearing. Yesterday’s snow was the first one this winter here in Washington. We are normally used to see our first snow in early December.
Of course I’m only kidding. No serious person would point at a single weather event as evidence for or against climate change.
factoid on January 28, 2009 at 1:51 PM
Keep in mind that the DC area is not equipped to handle snow, let alone ice. The day back in 1981, when Air Florida crashed into the Potomac, DC was in grid-lock because of the snow and ice, I was there, people abandoning cars in the streets and on the various Interstates in and out of the city…and, most drivers in the DC-area are not the least bit skilled in driving in these conditions…then you add the top heavy school buses with drivers who can barely drive well on open and dry streets…give them some ice to contend with…yep, that’s a plan.
OK, Mr. President…how many school-age kids who are not chauffeured to school will get hurt today when their school bus runs off the road or gets rammed by some idiot driving an SUV at the standard Capital Beltway speed of 85mph, or the kid who gets hit by a motorist who decides to slide up over the curb after gunning it on a patch of ice and slams onto the sidewalk because he has to get to work, and Obama said we were wimps ’cause we were staying at home?
And then there is that little matter of frostbite among kids whose parents are ill equipped to think how to dress them right before they walk out the door.
Heck, even in Chicago…you only get cleared streets if your aldrerman is getting “dash” from the constituents…
All talk, Mr. President…as usual.
But, its OK…you can wave your hand and make the ice melt and the streams run free in the meadows…
coldwarrior on January 28, 2009 at 1:51 PM
He is advocating economic stimulus through property destruction. When know if property gets damaged (e.g., cars, poles, signes, etc.). They will have to be repaired. Thus creating ecnomic activity.
I am sure Obama will soon introduce a bill to have windows broken to create jobs for non-white construction workers.
WashJeff on January 28, 2009 at 1:52 PM
I don’t think the closings/delays in DC are as absurd as you suggest. Nevertheless, I haven’t seen the real point made. The filthy bastard doesn’t run the DC public schools but he does run the executive branch of the government. Why doesn’t he sign out an executive order forbidding liberal leave policies for government workers for any snowfall totals under two feet?

Coming from the New England, and having lived in DC for a few years, for sure they cannot handle a little bit of snow or ice. One inch on the ground, and the city shuts down.
And the accidents on the roads…For some reason, DC’ers actually believe that by slamming on the brakes while on ice and snow will somehow cause the vehicle to stop on a dime.
But yeah…they certainly lack the infrastructure to deal with it.

You must have missed the news while you were here. Around 1990, AA County had a kid killed walking to the bus stop because a passing car hit a big patch of ice and slid into the child. In Howard Co., there was a mom and child killed around 1993 when their car slid into a light pole. Those are just the few that I can think of off the top of my head.
This is pretty specific situation, and ice is a lot different than snow. We can manage some snow, but even the greenest Priuses cannot get traction on ice.

canditaylor68 on January 28, 2009 at 1:58 PM
This is telling, regarding the psychology of the man. (Along with scores of previous telling things.)
Remember when Michelle said Obama was going to “make you” work?
Obama thinks the only thing anything anywhere is lacking is . . . him.
Now that he’s in D.C., he figures it’s his job to “apply” whatever he wants to.
He looks at stuff, comes up with the answer, and believes with every fiber of his being that it IS the answer. And he intends to “make you” realize that. In fact, he thinks HE is the answer.
Megalomanic narcissist, with delusions of grandeur. Believes it is his job and his calling to make other people “live right.” Fully intends to, too.

Despite the number of idiots who think that their 4×4 makes them immune to ice!
Seriously, AA and Howard counties are pretty far out and have enough rural areas that they are in a slightly different catagory than Montgomery, PG, or Fairfax counties.
As for DC public schools, does it really matter if they show up or not? Sasha Obama’s daddy is so beholden to the NEA that those DC kids are doomed to failure because organized labor trumps vouchers to save the kids who don’t get to go to elitist private schools instead of hanging out at the White House.

I commute into DC from across the Potomac in Virginia every day. This morning my car was coated in a thick sheet of ice and it took me about 30 minutes to scrape and chip it all off. When I got on the road it took me less time to get to Capitol Hill than it normally does for three reasons: 1) All the schools were closed so there were fewer cars on the roads, 2) A lot of people who would have driven either didn’t go in at all or took public transportation so there were fewer cars still, and 3) the people who treat the roads actually did a damn fine job of it for once. Traffic moved just fine all the way into town. My commute was about 15 minutes shorter than on a normal day…which made up for some of the time I spent de-icing the car.

There is quite a difference between the snow country and ice country.
I’m from upstate NY. Everyone there drives through snow regularly. You drive slower but you still get to your destination.
Now I’m in MD. Snow is much less common but ice is more common than in NY. You can’t drive on ice. The main roads are salted down and typically are not a problem. The side streets where the majority of homes and apartments (where the kiddies are) are however do not get salted until much later and sometimes don’t get it at all.
I don’t think his girls have been riding public transportation since he’s been in politics.

Most school districts close because of their buses, not the parents who drive their children to school. Is it safe for a bus to be on the street is the criteria. If the answer is no, then school is either put off for a couple of hours or canceled. In the DFW area, we seldom see snow, but ice is a horse of a different color. Try driving on ice. Or better yet, tune into a DFW tv station’s website and watch the clips.

Now we cannot share their delusions, ship of fools.

I thought I was obsessive about updating HotAir, but DeathToBlasphemers has got me beat. His F5 key must be on its last legs.

Congress has been spending money hand over fist for all sorts of things in DC for many years. It’s one of the worst run cities in the country. Corruption and waste and incompetence are the norm (but people aren’t supposed to talk about that, because that’s raaacist).
A few days ago I was reading in a London paper about some remarks Michelle Obama had made about how she wants to reach out to the people of DC. The paper noted that 1/3 of the DC population is functionally illiterate. Even if DC had the equipment to deal w/snow and ice, they wouldn’t be able to do it. They can’t even get ambulances to the correct address. If you’ve never had to live there (as I did for many years), thank your lucky stars.

Good Lord, I feel like I have stumbled onto Koz for Cons…
Lighten up people. It WAS a joke. I’m in North Eastern Ontario and we up here make the same kind of lame remarks about Toronto all the time. (I mean, who actually calls in the ARMY to clean up snow?!?) My Rats are home today too, possibly tomorrow, and Friday is a PA day. I only wish we had snow days when I was a kid…
