Norah O’Donnell to Mike Pence: Why are you so beholden to Rush Limbaugh?

posted at 7:15 pm on January 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

A lefty friend e-mailed me this afternoon before this even aired asking why MSNBC was running so many segments today on Limbaugh being the new head of the GOP. Answer: For the same reason Obama name-checked him in that meeting with Republicans leaders last week, knowing full well that it’d leak. The more the left builds him up, the more they can tar the whole GOP with whatever controversial thing he’ll say tomorrow. Rest assured, if the stimulus tanks, the economy craters, and centrists lurch back towards the right and noninterventionism, this momentary media spotlight on him will disappear mighty quick. As for why Republican leaders are loath to criticize him, Gingrey already told us in his pathetic, groveling apology this morning: “Because of the high volume of phone calls and correspondence received by my office since the Politico article ran, I wanted to take a moment to speak directly to grassroots conservatives. Let me assure you, I am one of you.” Such is Limbaugh’s standing with the base that to criticize him, however gently, is sufficient to call one’s conservative authenticity into question. There’s only one person who trumps him in that regard, in fact, and it’s that person who’s the real de facto head of the party.

Below the O’Donnell clip you’ll find a long, entertaining exchange between Joan Walsh and Dick Armey from tonight’s Hardball on — guess what — whether Rush Limbaugh’s the head of the GOP. Click the image to watch.

Pence to O’Donnell: Why are you so beholden to B. Hussein Obama?

Defector01 on January 28, 2009 at 7:19 PM

Obama’s the head of MSNBC.

snickelfritz on January 28, 2009 at 7:23 PM

LOL these people are morons.

Rush Limbaugh is a private citizen with a radio show.

Why he garners so much attention when he has no direct power in legislative matters nor votes on any committee, nor issues authoritative commands to anyone in the Republican Party is irrelevant; He is the head of the GOP in fantasy land.

BKennedy on January 28, 2009 at 7:24 PM

Anyone heard from our de facto head in regards to this stimulus crap sandwich?

amerpundit on January 28, 2009 at 7:24 PM

MSNBC is worse than PRAVDA. A joke in every regard.

Allahpundit is right in one thing: Sarah & Rush are the leaders of this Party, and today also showed us that Obama has ZERO, ZILCH influence among conservatives in this country.

Also remember than despite the election results, more than twice as many Americans define themselves as “Conservative” versus “Liberal”.

Is it 2010/2012 yet?

Norwegian on January 28, 2009 at 7:25 PM

I don’t think so. At least not in my case. Sarah Palin has been in politics for what, less than 10 years? Rush has been the leader of conservatism for 20+ years. Sarah goes after Rush, bye bye Sarah, in my eyes.

Why are Republicans so unwilling to unite behind socialism? Why do they have to so divisively stand up for individual liberty? Why can’t Republicans stop opposing bad ideas on their merits? Why do they complain about every little infringement of their civil liberties?

JohnJ on January 28, 2009 at 7:39 PM

They just want people in Congress to be afraid of making Keith Obermann angry. It must be kind of said that “The Worst Person in the World” award is in reality considered a badge of honor.

Cindy Munford on January 28, 2009 at 7:44 PM

I’ve said it here before. I will say it again — as a firm conservative. The GOP is little more than the modern day Whig Party.

Just dissolve and be done. There’s no message. No leadership. Diminished relevance.

At almost every turn the GOP is outmaneuvered by the Dimmicrats. Extend the permanent campaign and momentum by further making your opponent a cartoon characture. It must be like shooting fish in a barrel. And I like rush immensely. But he’s not the breadth and depth of the GOP. Nor is John McCain.

Exhibit A: Why does any self respecting conservative bother to go on to MSNBC? It makes no logical sense.

Exhibit B: Well here’s ONE reason … the GOP lacks the ability to vault over these nutroots to talk directly to the public via New Media. Let’s not point to those forgettable Web ads that are up for 20 minutes god knows where on the Internet.

The absolute vacuum is far too much for a bedrock Reaganite to stomach.

Etiquette and manners are by their very nature untruthfulness. Calling a fat woman “fat” is controversial, because it is true and she doesn’t want to hear the truth.

Calling Obama a socialist crook is controversial, because it is true and his O-bots don’t want to hear the truth.

They are beginning to see the error of their ways. Rush is showing them the way. The Dems are going nuts because it is getting more difficult for them to appear reasonable. Every day they show how reactionary they are. None of them have any ideas that are constructive. Socialism fails every time it is tried. It’s failing right before our very eyes. Obama knows it will fail, but he is arrogant enough to think he can pick it up and revive it. Not gonna happen. That’s why the Libs are in full attack mode. Political figures don’t need to criticize Rush; the only reason for pols on the right to do it to ingratiate themselves to the media or left.

And re:Palin – to be frank, your assertion yesterday that we’d all be pro-amnesty if she came out that way is nothing short of an insult to your readers and politically aware conservatives in general.

I am led to think that you believe conservatives, like liberals, triumph personality over principle. That is not true of “conservatives” – though if you believe it’s true, it raises a couple interesting questions about why you think people visit this site.

Chris Matthews almost got Joan Walsh to make a point instead of repeat “social justice” which is income redistribution. If you work and don’t pay taxes, but your payroll taxes pay into Social Security and Medicaid (socialist Democrat programs)… then you collect from programs you never paid into, but other people did, that is WELFARE, not social justice. If you make as much as a school teacher, social worker or a nurse while you flip burgers, that is not social justice. It certainly is not good for the economy, because productivity slows down if the incentive to work is absent.

Come on, Dick Army. Does he have the same problem as John McCain? Apparently, they think their job is to speak for the party by winking instead of explaining policy.

And the winking thing was a Sarah Palin reference. But how come she’s the dumb one when she was the only one who could articulate our positions and make people listen. John McCain felt it should be obvious that Ayers’ actions in the past were despicable, and his failure to apologize made him a poor associate for a presidential candidate. Sarah Palin called Ayers and his wife a terrorist. Most Americans still think she was talking about Bin Laden or something, because McCain thought it went without saying.

Sorry, but Palin is not my de facto leader. My first thought was the same as right4life’s, REAGAN. Then, Coulter, then Steyn. Sarah doesn’t make my list, unfortuneatly, as I’m looking for a politician to lead us not just our wonderful pundits.

Rush has predicted that since Bush is gone, he will become the scapegoat for the media.

He’s right, again!

Excellent responses from Rep. Mike Pence from Indiana. When a charge is brought of up racism (and I really wish Rush hadn’t said that, because it’s obvious how Obama got to be President) or the Republicans are accused of listening to Rush too much and being obstructionists, the immediate response should be to argue the merits of the stimulus. Rush is actually doing Republicans a favor by drawing attention to it and opening up a healthy debate.

]

Let’s take this as having truth to it. If it does, then it shows how unbelievably desperate the Dems are to “tarnish” their opponents who are in the minority.

I hate to burst Allahpundit’s bubble, but I would say that his synopsis as about as false as it could get.

MSNBC is going on a false premise: That Limbaugh is the “head” of the GOP. The reason that Obama is attacking Rush is to tar the rest of the GOP, because they know damn well that their premise is false.

If Rush is wrong, then why do they want to shut him up? Why is he a threat to them? Why don’t they just let Rush be wrong and let him fall on his face? That would do more to harm to Rush’s reputation than this embarrassing manner in which they are giving Rush openings to point out every single flaw they have in their ‘stimulus’ Crap Sandwich.

They know damned well that they can’t “tarnish the whole GOP,” with what a radio talk show host says. The reason they are doing this is to shut up Rush Limbaugh. And if they can get Rush a bad enough, “reputation” on the airwaves of MSNBC then they can make a case that he is so, “offensive” that it warrants the government ignoring the first amendment right of free speech.

That’s what they are about with this, and it will become more obvious as time goes on.

Ironic to hear Chrissy talking about “alters”. Being he never wanders far from his in front of the big “O”.

You might disagree that Sarah Palin is a Reagan conservative, and you may think being a governor and vice presidential nominee are insignificant leadership experience, but that’s why Sarah Palin is both of those things and calls herself a woman instead of a girl.

You may not be too far off.

But the Left is overreaching (already). This will backfire in their face, and they won’t even know what happened.
