It begins: Obama drafting letter to new pen pals in Iran

posted at 8:54 pm on January 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

Not to Ahmadinejad but to Khamenei himself, apparently. That way he doesn’t have to worry about getting any rambling 18-page replies.

State department officials have written at least three drafts of the letter, which gives assurances that Washington does not want to overthrow the Islamic regime but merely seeks a change in its behaviour. The letter would be addressed to the Iranian people and sent directly to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, or released as an open letter.

One draft proposal suggests Iran should compare its relatively low standard of living with that of some of its more prosperous neighbours and contemplate the benefits of losing its pariah status in the west. Although the tone is conciliatory, it also calls on Iran to end what the US calls state sponsorship of terrorism.

The letter is being considered by the new secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, as part of a sweeping review of US policy on Iran. A decision on sending it is not expected until the review is complete…

Saeed Leylaz, a Tehran-based analyst, said a US letter would have to be accompanied by security guarantees and an agreement to drop economic sanctions. “If they send such a letter it will be a very significant step towards better ties but they should be careful in not thinking Tehran will respond immediately,” he said.

I wonder if they’ll tack a “P.S. Sorry” on at the end. In fairness, there may be an ulterior motive to this: Ahmadinejad’s up for reelection in June and Khatami, the “moderate” who preceded him in office, is evidently planning to challenge him. By showing a conciliatory face now, The One may be trying to swing Khamenei towards backing Khatami and the reformists and leaving Ahmadinejad and the hardliners out in the cold. Although if Khamenei’s planning to dump the tiny terrorist for anyone, I’d guess it’s for his protege Larijani. He is high on Hopenchange, after all.

As for what sorts of security guarantees the U.S. would have to concede, it’s easy to guess where they’ll start. Thanks again, New York Times!

“Washington does not want to overthrow the Islamic regime but merely seeks a change in its behaviour.”

Excuse me, but haven’t we been saying that since Ronnie was president?

Has Obama ordered the white flags yet?

GarandFan on January 28, 2009 at 10:02 PM

His naiveté is breathtaking.

katy on January 28, 2009 at 9:54 PM

I hear you, but personally I think it’s stupidity coupled with arrogance. He will fail to learn.

Re. your 9:57 post.

Certainly can add that. You’re absolutely correct, that’s another very important scenario unfolding right now. Heard Gingrey on Hannity tonight and he sounded very sincere and straight forward. He was also chastened. He got the word and he is a true believer. It just remains to see how long his memory is.

Oldnuke on January 28, 2009 at 10:02 PM

That’s giving Obama much to much credit. As someone else suggested, I think this is more in line with his William Ayers school of thought.

His naiveté is breathtaking.

katy on January 28, 2009 at 9:54 PM

Too much credit? I’m saying Obama thinks he’s going to make a grand diplomatic statement when all he’s doing is a coke commercial. “We good Americans…we friends”. Bush already did that as part of a “freeze” the leadership strategy while trying to get the populace to mobilize. Now Obama’s just going for the populace while letting the leadership do whatever.

The problem is Iran isn’t a Democracy. The religious leaders run the country (like the Catholic church did England early on) so you have to target THEM for diplomatic action (if that’s what you’re going to do).

Obama isn’t.

Fail.

Skywise on January 28, 2009 at 10:03 PM

What, yet another trial balloon? Can’t The Obama administration do any of that ‘quiet diplomacy’? They think diplomacy takes place on the front pages of the NY Times?

Are they so desperate for approval from party loyalists that they can’t do anything without bragging about it in the news?

Skandia Recluse on January 28, 2009 at 10:10 PM

To wit, he’s making a plea to the people of Iran.

Skywise on January 28, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Really? What do you think the Mullahs will tell the people the meaning of the letter was?

Itchee Dryback on January 28, 2009 at 10:11 PM

This is just ducky when you couple it with Teh One’s decree that “the United States shalt not deploy missile defense in Poland”.

Gird them loins, baby.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on January 28, 2009 at 10:12 PM

This is good news. I hear the moderate Iranian leaders stone you with small pebbles as opposed to the hardliners who prefer the bigger rocks that cause all those darned unsightly bruises.

This seems to be Obama’s modus operandi in regard to making decisions like this. First he makes a tentative statement about a particular issue and then waits to see what sort of response it gets from the public and the media before committing to a more substantive position.

Dreadnought223 on January 28, 2009 at 10:31 PM

… gives assurances that Washington does not want to overthrow the Islamic regime

The fundamental error of the Bush administration formalized by the new one. No surprise at all.

JDPerren on January 28, 2009 at 10:32 PM

For anyone who wondered what it would be like with Benedict Arnold as President …

BTW, I got a real kick out of the way the idiot messiah told Al Arabya that it was his job to instruct Americans on how nice and normal the muslim world is. Sheesh.

Calling SCOTUS. Please eject this ineligible idiot from office. It’s still not too late … though it will be soon.

Same as Clinton. I wonder if it’s really Obama or his “handlers” playing strategy. (Actually now that I think about it, Clinton IS Secretary of State… so this is probably their play and Obama is going along.)

Skywise on January 28, 2009 at 10:37 PM

Obama’s attempt to appease Iran will only be seen as weakness. Obama has no clue about foreign policy. We will look back at this nonsense as steps along the way to disaster.

The truth is that McCain kicked Obama’s ass when they debated foreign policy in the 2008 election, not that the mainstream media would admit to it.

The American people are going to pay a heavy price for electing someone in Obama who does not know what he is doing concerning foreign policy, military matters and national security.

Also, ironic his plan for dealing with Iran: “I hope they change.”

Obama hasn’t given Islam the tummy rubs Bush used to hand out regularly. Iran is spitting in the Ones face. They desire chaos, they are like losers who do suicide by cop. They are not looking for favorable deals or consideration. They want the west to pull the trigger. What do you do with that?

BL@KBIRD on January 28, 2009 at 11:59 PM

I listened tonight as some Dummy on the michael savage show came on and thought that
obama is going to make all of the world realize we cant stop bickering with each other..

To which the host replied
Which nation sir has threatened to wipe another off the map (to which the caller replied)
Why America of course..

Dumb asses

No wonder obama got elected..
I really am beginning to see why michael savage calls
Liberalism a mental disorder..

I call it mental illness..

Because you have to be mentally ill
To not understand when someone has a weapon
and comes up to you and states PUBLICLY
I am going to KILL you

To which a liberal would reply
Oh come on just share your feelings with me please..

Oh i guarantee you this
Share his true feeling he will
When you see that Bright ligth comming towards your dying liberal ass
I hate to tell you this
It aint the heavenly light your seeing
Nope its because irans president just pulled the TRIGGER
you moron..

jcila on January 29, 2009 at 12:05 AM

Simple
If iran wants so badly to go see mohammed
May he Roast in Hell

Fine I am all the willing to help them to meet their goals..

there takes care of the suicide question now doesnt it..

But what i am worried about is
obama surrendering so fast we wont have time to defend ourselves..

jcila on January 29, 2009 at 12:06 AM

And Obama shows that he understands nothing about the Cultural imperatives of the Middle East.

The Arab culture, which Iran IS a part of, puts a huge amount of importance to appearing strong…

Reality does not matter, as long as you can control others actions through the appearance of strength…

This will be seen throughout the Arab world as Iran winning. Regime change has been the goal since Reagan… heck, we even built up Saddam Hussein so he could war with Iran…

This will STRENGTHEN the current Iranian Gov, not weaken it, as they now look like the “Strong Horse”…

ddrintn on January 29, 2009 at 12:37 AM

I’m curious if anywhere in this letter Obama demands that Iran absolutely must stop it’s nuclear program. If not, the whole letter is worth less than the paper it’s written on. It doesn’t matter if a so-called moderate like Khatami is elected in June because the very next election might put one of the hardline radicals back in charge. Or there might be a seizure of power by the hardliners. A nuclear armed Iran is dangerous in the long-term, no matter how “moderate” their leader might be in the short-term.

JohnInCA on January 29, 2009 at 12:44 AM

Then again Obama used this triangulation method of decision making during the campaign as seen in his response to Russia’s invasion of Georgia.

The problem is of course what happens when he gets into a situation where he has to make a snap decision during a major crisis and doesn’t have the time deliberate about it?

Its like that quote from the movie Speed when Jack says ” Pop quiz,….asshole You have a hair trigger aimed at your head. What do you do? What do you do?”

Only with Obama its “Pop quiz Mr President….Iran just tested their first Nuclear Weapon. What do you do? what do you do?”

Hmmmm…. what was that saying we used to have about certain Junior Officers in the Navy?

“When in Fear, when in doubt… run in circles, scream and shout?”

Romeo13 on January 29, 2009 at 12:50 AM

OK, I looked at that piece by Soros that two of you linked to, but it was long, and even if I read it all, I couldn’t understand it.

Seemed like he was saying we need to pay off the mortgages of people who can’t afford them, and also dampen down our own prosperity so that other countries can be more prosperous.

Could someone give me a sort of Cliff’s Notes on what this piece was getting at?

Alana on January 29, 2009 at 12:55 AM

Dear Ahmadinejad:

I have Unicorns!

Do you want a Unicorn? I have lots of them! Maybe you can give out Unicorns to all your wives’ kids because I have lots of them. I’m sorry those 55 blindfolded hostages were not nice to you whenever you tied them up, put them against a wall and told them you were going to shoot them. And I’m sorry that mean old Ronald Reagan made your great leader Ayatollah Khomeini interrupt his Islamic treatises on the Koran’s views on whether a good Moslem could eat the meat of a sodomized camel to start worrying about having a 2000-pound bomb blow up his house.
And I’m sorry that we care about you threatening to kill 6 million Jews in Israel. And Littlegreenfootballs and Ann Coulter and the Dutch Geert guy who I would like to kill too because he is so intolerant. I really want to kill that son-of-a-bitch. Oooooo.. I hate him.. Feel better?
I’m sorry that we Americans are alive and prosperous. Or were, before I showed up…
Sorry that our buildings are pretty hard to blow up and that Israel has 6 Hydrogen bombs just south of Dimona under the water treatment plant – oops.. I shouldn’t have told you that.. actually, that is, about 200 meters south of the water treatment plant. In that little warehouse, there.

Feel better? How about a Unicorn?

With lots of Love,
Your penpal,
Barack H. Obama

Why advertise a letter that hasn’t been written yet? To raise expectations?

Besides which, advertising it puts Iran on the spot. The best way to advance diplomatically, if one wants to, is to do it QUIETLY! Otherwise it’s just egoism.

Look for the pictures of Obama on his knees befoere Khamenei giving him a “Lewinsk” before this is over. The draft is essentially an apology for our opposition to the state of Iran and their plans for regional domination and the destruction of Israel. And given Obama’s foreign policy staff, and his personal funding of Hamas and the PLO, his credentials as an anti-Israel Democrat will be proven when Khamenei (and Ahmadinejad) get permission to use their nukes on Israel, while we look away.

It does not take a majority to prevail… but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men” Samuel Adams

We have to fight Obama on EVERY front.

Hey obama
Perhaps if your pastor jeramiah right would
ACTUALLY READ the Bible instead of Burning it..

Perhaps he could then advise you correctly..
do not fight or betay israel obama

for you will loose..

5 For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.

So Mr: president obama i suggest sir with all respect due to your office that perhaps
you should get rid of all the anti-semites and communists and liars in your cabinet

and actually get a real bapitst preacher to advise you when it comes to Israel , and Islam and morality..
Because right now sir:
you are placing our nation along side with the
ENEMIES of ISRAEL..

That means you are placing our entire nation at risk
of ending up fighting against the God of Israel..

Sir your an idiot for anyone who fights against the God of Israel LOOSES

this includes ALL the muslims..
