House vote on stimulus imminent; Update: 244-188, all Republicans vote no
posted at 5:46 pm on January 28, 2009 by Allahpundit
They’re wrapping up floor debate on the last Republican amendment on C-SPAN 1 as I write this. Is the GOP really going to walk away from this crap sandwich or will the cocktail party at 1600 tonight be even chummier than hoped? A trillion dollars is a small price to pay for bipartisanship!
Prediction: 20 Republicans defect. Exit question: Who said it? “There is a temptation to expand direct interference of state in economy. In the Soviet Union that became an absolute. We paid a very dear price for that.”
Update: Final vote: 244-188. It was 242-190 moments before they gaveled it — with every last Republican voting no — but two no votes switched at the last minute and they didn’t say who they were. I assume they’re Blue Dogs, but I’ll check. Either way, for good or ill, this is entirely the Democrats’ baby now.
Update: Here’s the guest list on that White House shindig, which should be loads of fun after this vote.
Update: WaPo confirms that all 177 Republicans were among the nays.

The problem with that is, that the markets will absolutely not like that.

I know that the petitions are old news now but I popped over to see how it went. There was 1404 posts and I think the Democrats have accomplished another, in the words of a poster there, “epic fail”. Wouldn’t it be nice if the media asked them how it went?

The economy is in a bad way, it will get better if left on it’s own(invisible hand), the more the Dems choose to F with it, the more blame that can be laid on their doorstep(by us, not the MSM)…

Charlie Melancon (D-LA 3) voted for it and he’s a ranking member of the Blue Dogs. His justification for was 5 billion in road construction in Louisiana. Most of it would be spent outside his district. Part of the stimulus was to extend I-49 on the northern end from Shreveport to Arkansas.
Nothing in there about the southern end in Melancon’s district where there I-49 was proposed to go from Lafayette to New Orleans. That’s been proposed for the past decade or so.
Other projects would be throwing more money on the stretch of I-10 in Jefferson Parish that’s been worked on for the past six years. That’s located in Steve Scalise’s district and he voted no.
He claims he’s a conservative but he’s a stealth liberal. He only becomes a conservative when running here and he ran unopposed in 2008. I’m planning on moving in his district this summer and I will do everything I can to unseat him in 2010.
If he supports this bill, he doesn’t support offshore drilling for energy independence. Most of Louisiana’s refineries are in Melancon’s district. Offshore drilling would create more jobs in Melancon’s district as well as the rest of Louisiana.
Charlie, who took offense to being called a liberal when he first ran for congress, voted for the biggest liberal pork barrel bill. Only because he thinks throwing more money at highway construction currently in progress is the only way to create more jobs in Louisiana.

Inflation: the ultimate bailout.
The Fed is just getting warmed up in its battle to reignite inflation. It has already doubled the monetary base and it will soon begin printing money to buy long-dated Treasury bonds, pushing down interest rates. It’s hard to wrap your head around the concept, but Congress can spend as much money as it wants without causing Treasury rates to go up, because the Fed can print as much money as it wants to buy Treasury bonds. In fact, why don’t we eliminate the income tax, and just have the Fed print the roughly $1 trillion dollars it brings in?
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. In the short term, it doesn’t cause inflation because the depression has crushed demand for goods and services. It also doesn’t cause the dollar to collapse in FX markets because all other major countries are simultaneously doing the same thing. But in the long run, a vastly greater number of dollars out there means that each dollar is worth a lot less.
This is, in fact, the desired outcome for the Fed/Treasury. Devaluing the dollar punishes savers and rewards debtors, which is exactly what Geithner-Bernanke wants. Cut the value of the currency in half, and everyone’s debt (mortgage debtors’, consumers’, businesses’, and the government’s) is suddenly a lot more manageable. Cut the value of the dollar by two-thirds or three-fourths, even better. And if some little old ladies can’t buy groceries because the money they saved all their lives is no longer worth anything, well, let them eat

But if Geithner-Bernanke are pawns of the rich, which everything they’ve done to-date says they are, they’d have to be in favor of deflation, which makes each dollar that the richs’ debtors have to pay back worth more. The poor aren’t the savers or creditors, they are the debtors. Never mind the old woman who’s saved all her life, what about the old rich guy who’s holding a bunch of Treasury debt and dollars? You don’t think G & B are going to act in that guy’s interests? Isn’t that what they’ve been trying to do? It’s in that guy’s interest to have some inflation because that’s part of economic growth most of the time, but not too much inflation. Things could get out of hand, but I can’t say for sure that G&B won’t get their way in the end.

It has become extremely annoying to see words like the ones above in bold. I cannot allow you or anyone else completely ignorant of the most basic economics to get away with this.
Either you admit you’re full of it, or admit you know absolutely nothing about economics. The government can never be a net creator…of anything. The government only takes. It is mathematically impossible for an entity that is fully dependent on the taking of private money (we call those taxes) to survive, operate, and spend; to produce jobs-let alone wealth and prosperity.
I challenge you or anyone to show me exactly how governments produce. In this thread. Directly after you read this post.

I am gladdened that all the Republicans voted no. This abomination rightly belongs to the Democrats. I am curious to see how this Catholic congressman votes on FOCA. If he supports it, I fear I will not be able to contain my wrath if I see him in church again. I will not physically assault him but I will not be silent. It’s a damned shame that I expect the rest of the congregation to be so. I hope I’m wrong.

Now that this pork bill has passed, here is an example of what is coming next:
Australian Gun Law Update
Here’s a thought to warm some of your hearts . . ..
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia
Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the now available data from Down Under.
It has now been one year (12 months) since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.
The first year results are now available:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent;
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent);
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent as compared with the last one year period when private ownership of a firearm was legal.
(NB: the law-abiding citizens did turn in their personal firearms, the criminal element did not and thus criminals in Australia still possess their guns.)
While data for the 25 years preceding the confiscation of privately owned guns showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months as criminals now are assured their victims will be unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.
Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in ‘successfully ridding Australian society of guns.’
This story of well intentioned government intervention in the rights of lawful individuals to own and possess firearms won’t be seen in the mainstream US media or on the American evening news. President Obama who advocates a similar confiscation in the US will not be reporting any of this to you.
But, the Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.

My fellow HotAir’ers, do NOT take too much comfort in this ONE vote. Yes, the House “R’s” grew a set, but I fear it is only temporary… Sadly enough the Senate RINO’s will NOT follow suit. We have ONE chance to make this a “totaly owned Democrat meltdown” and that is to CALL YOUR SENATOR! Make your voice heard in RECORD NUMBERS. Many, many House members had thier phones MELT! Our voices and that of Rush Limbaugh were heard! DO IT AGAIN! Call, E-Mail, YELL FROM THE TOPS OF THE MOUNTAINS! Do what you can to STOP this horrible bill from gaining ANY Republican support. This bill will TOTALY FAIL to do any good for America, mostly it will HURT and we need it to be hung around the necks of the RADICALS! The far left Liberals need to CHOAK ON THIS CRAP SANDWICH! The MESSIAH needs to be humbled and understand that we WILL fight him every step of the way to hells door. In other words, you’re a fence sitter who likes to criticize both sides without committing to any set of values. “I love my country” is not a set of ideals, but another empty slogan. Political parties were established by the founding fathers. There is no “independent” party or “both paries suk” party. Grow up and make a committment and work within the system established by the founders.

Mr_Magoo on January 29, 2009 at 11:37 AM
What a quandry. An independant is not a party party. It indicates the person is not affiliated with any political party. It’s an all inclusive term. It just means the person does not believe the BS of any political party or perhaps just hasn’t decided yet. Sometimes called swing voters because they can’t make a decision. It is within the system established by the founding fathers some of whom were against political parties altogether. Think George Washington.
kanda on January 29, 2009 at 11:44 AM
Mr Magoo makes a good point. You seem more than happy to sit on the fence and call others on the carpet for their beliefs. While at the same time espousing no belief or value system of your own. It’s nice to never commit. One benefit is you never have to say your sorry. Another is you never learn from your mistakes. It also leaves you out in the cold when decisions because you don’t participate. You are great handing out criticism. Is there anything else you can contribute.
In other words you don’t exercise your power to influence and change things for the better. You only tell others they are wrong.

Yes they were. The common bond they shared was their love of liberty. I a love so strong within them that they risked all for libery. In the end, reluctantly they fought a war with Great Britan to obtain liberty. Then they established our country to preserve liberty. It is not love of country it is love of liberty that made us free and keeps us free.
The Founding Fathers of the United States of America gave us a republic…in the words of ben franklin “if they can keep it”.

Just found this:
http://www.house.gov/jec/fiscal/tx-grwth/reagtxct/reagtxct.htm
The Reagan Tax Cuts: Lessons for Tax Reform
Conclusion
The Reagan tax cuts, like similar measures enacted in the 1920s and 1960s, showed that reducing excessive tax rates stimulates growth, reduces tax avoidance, and can increase the amount and share of tax payments generated by the rich. High top tax rates can induce counterproductive behavior and suppress revenues, factors that are usually missed or understated in government static revenue analysis. Furthermore, the key assumption of static revenue analysis that economic growth is not affected by tax changes is di sproved by the experience of previous tax reduction programs. There is little reason to expect static revenue analysis to evaluate the economic or distributional effects of current tax reform proposals much better than it evaluated the Reagan tax program 15 years ago.

Obama berates ‘shameful’ Wall Street bonuses at the same time that he is terrifying people into giving his party a trillion dollars.
He’s not shocked by a shake down — he’s pulling one right now. His lieutenant reveals the true purpose of the bill is to stoke the fears of “the masses” (in the words of Saul Alinsky), and use their fear to institute a socialist state. Ahh, the sheeple….Ah, those worms…!
Such cynicism from Emanual is totally at odds with the message of hope and change from Obama. And right now the feeling they’re encouraging isn’t hope and change, anyway — its “fear and obey!”
I need to re-read my Orwell and Swift. Didn’t Orwell say something about liberals being in the vanguard of socialism? Didn’t Swift depict a boondoggle similar to the attempt to recreate the climate?
pomerpants on January 29, 2009 at 7:53 PM
Mostly I am interested in the secret contempt Obama has for the people of this country. He swept to power based on the sheer ignorance of his electorate, which was 90% poorly educated people with marginal jobs or under threat of deportation, and 10% rich educated people who accpted that the ends justified the means. The greatest disappointment is reserved for those 90%, because they sincerely believe he can save them — but to him they are just a tool.
But before the illusion vanishes, he has one more grift to play them for — the economy. And now they are convinced that his is the only way, and the only reason for opposition is pure evil, and they are willing to sacrifice the welfare of their grandchildren for their own personal short-term gain, such as it is (i.e. total ennervation and dimminution of their own personalities).
If I am right about his character, their only consolation will be that there is a very special place reserved in Hell for those people who so treacherously deceive their own….

ORWELL, The Road to Wigan Pier (1937)(from Slate)
Real working-class folks, [Orwell] says, might be drawn toward a socialist future centered around family life, the pub, football, and local politics. But those who speak in its name, he says, have a snobbish condescension toward such quotidian pleasures—even condemning coffee and tea. “Reformers” urged the poor to eat healthier food—less sugar, more brown bread. And their audience balked.
The perennial struggle of Democratic contenders to appeal to ordinary Americans seems very much of a piece with Orwell’s sharp descriptions. Election after election, Democrats argue that once Joe and Jane Sixpack fully grasp the wisdom of the latest six-point college-loan program, or of an 800-page health-care scheme, they will come to wave the Democratic banner. And, sometimes, these voters do just that—provided that the candidate in question has demonstrated a sense that he or she is not treating them as the subject of an anthropological study.

Meanwhile, this fat pig of a so-called stimulus bill is sinking in public estimation as we speak. Who’s the lemmings here?

For:
• PATCO and the precedent it has set, reaching far beyond mere unions.
• For allowing an open-season on the manufacturing belt without thinking of the consequences.

It’s Reagan’s fault that US manufacturing lost the competitive edge? Have you examined what was going on in the 70s?
