House vote on stimulus imminent; Update: 244-188, all Republicans vote no

posted at 5:46 pm on January 28, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

They’re wrapping up floor debate on the last Republican amendment on C-SPAN 1 as I write this. Is the GOP really going to walk away from this crap sandwich or will the cocktail party at 1600 tonight be even chummier than hoped? A trillion dollars is a small price to pay for bipartisanship!

Prediction: 20 Republicans defect. Exit question: Who said it? “There is a temptation to expand direct interference of state in economy. In the Soviet Union that became an absolute. We paid a very dear price for that.”

Update: Final vote: 244-188. It was 242-190 moments before they gaveled it — with every last Republican voting no — but two no votes switched at the last minute and they didn’t say who they were. I assume they’re Blue Dogs, but I’ll check. Either way, for good or ill, this is entirely the Democrats’ baby now.

Update: Here’s the guest list on that White House shindig, which should be loads of fun after this vote.

Update: WaPo confirms that all 177 Republicans were among the nays.

Even if they stop this stimulus (gag so called)
package which it isnt

The other problem is.

You still have to see this to believe it
china and russia are telling obama
its the us fault for this mess (actually true) thank the democrats for raping fanny and freddie which started this wildfire..

1. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123315961511224575.html

2. So now europe and the soros group is telling obama
to PRINT more money in the trillions to dump it on the market to give liquidity to the banks (hey wansnt that TARP)
job?
and then when the inevitable inflation erupts
think 10 dollars a gallon for gas
then they say to slowly deflate the money supply..

IDIOTS…

A. they already gave 700 BILLion to the banks
they didnt use it to pay off the bad loans
No they HORDED the cash..

B. consumers already geting first screwed by wall street then the democrats in the senate..
Now afraid for both their jobs and homes stopped spending..

C. So now soros wants to print trillions of dollars to save his sorry ass (and other countries banks) since its all americas fault..

D. Russia and china so far ( i am waiting fro france) to scream bloody murder as they realize the dollar is about to go down the liberal toilet..

IDIOTS…

Ohh and to just piss off the arabs and soros clan
I heard about the amounts of oil the usa actually has

According to this link we dont even Need the ARABS or their OIL

http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=1911

This is how america is being SCREWED
by the liberals
By obama
By environmentalists
By soros and their kind who Want a fake CARBOn tax on oil
so the carbon credit FRAUDS can be paid trillions of dollars

And american consumers get the Liberal Shaft..

the only one who will enjoy this is
Barney Franks and the democrats..
After all they enjoy Gay sex..
Screwing is their natural hobby..

Hang in there sheebe …I for one understand what you mean…as do many others and some, rightfully so, want to correct you….all well n” good…just take in stride…
Unfortunately to replace these guys , in this cycle, we have to wait till 2010…
Impeachment for any of these quislings will have to come from their respective states…waste of time.
Calling and writing them (e-mail), will, hopefully, get their attention faster and I’m going to be very busy tomorrow doing just that…

Walt Minnick (ID)

Hey, goat, that’s great!

I’m going to call mine tomorrow morning.

We also need to encourage Republican senators like DeMint, Sessions, Inhofe, etc.

I’m from Florida and I have signed up for DeMint’s and Inhofe’s emails.

I will call my senators. I’m hoping that since Martinez isn’t running for reelection he’ll decide he can go ahead and live dangerously and represent us. I know that sounds backwards, but some of these guys think their constituency consists of their fellow senators.

Nelson, well, I can at least let him know there’s a voter awake and watching.

I just got home a little while ago and I’m catching up on the comments.

This cracks me up:

I think maybe the message is being heard. Found this at The Corner at NRO:

The “Rangel Rule” [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Rep. John Carter, a Texas Republican, sent out a press release earlier today about his innovative new bill:

“Rangel Rule”

All U.S. taxpayers would enjoy the same immunity from IRS penalties and interest as House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY) and Obama Administration Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, if a bill introduced today by Congressman John Carter (R-TX) becomes law.

Carter, a former longtime Texas judge, today introduced the Rangel Rule Act of 2009, HR 735, which would prohibit the Internal Revenue Service from charging penalties and interest on back taxes against U.S. citizens. Under the proposed law, any taxpayer who wrote “Rangel Rule” on their return when paying back taxes would be immune from penalties and interest.

Them’s spines I see a growin…

New York Times re-writing history:

“Yet the failure to win Republican support in the House seemed to echo the early months of the last Democratic administration, when former President Bill Clinton in 1993 had to rely solely on Democrats to win passage of a deficit-reduction bill that was a signature element of his presidency.” link

What a joke!

First of all the author has the 93′ date wrong. Clinton submitted a budget to congress that was over by 256 million in 1994. The new house republicans submitted the balanced budget amendment that Clinton was forced to sign. The rest is history “rewritten”.

Right Wing Sparkle has a letter from her congressman that outlines some of the items that were in the bill. You may have your own list to use when you call your senator, but if you need some things to name here are a few ideas:

· $80 billion for refundable tax-credits directly to individuals, even if they pay no taxes.
· $1 billion for the 2010 census
· $650 million for digital TV coupons.
· $600 million for new cars for the federal government.
· $6 billion for colleges/universities – many which have billion dollar endowments.
· $50 million in funding for the National Endowment of the Arts.
· $44 million for repairs to U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters.
· $200 million for the National Mall
· $800 million to Amtrak
· $335 million for Sexually Transmitted Disease education and prevention
· $150 million for Smithsonian repairs

I thought those TV coupons were already in a bill that’s been passed.

To the liberals who are complaining: Hey the bill passed, you should be excited. Unless, that is, you don’t think it was a good bill.

Maybe if liberals didn’t spend 24/7 saying how much smarter than conservatives they are, we wouldn’t be so suspicious when you want us to sign off on your crap proposals.

venividivici on January 28, 2009 at 10:20 PM

This bill has nothing in it that will save the economy. It is loaded with pork and a stimulus package never, ever works. If the Congress and President are serious about making America viable again they will scrap this mess and get serious about tax cuts. If they insist on this one it will be a very long time before we ever come back. Obama, you own this mess as you did ever since before the election. It is my personal opinion that the Fannie/Freddie mess was the October surprise and the Dems are flailing around trying to figure out how to CYA this thing. The descent into Socialism is purposful, but I don’t see how this is going to go well for the Dems.

“this guy” is Thomas Sowell, PhD Economics and he will give you some of the best insight stripped of all the bs. If you like that analogy, he’s got hundreds… go to his archive at townhall or read his books. imho he is pretty much a genius!

FLKraKa on January 28, 2009 at 10:33 PM

Update: WaPo confirms that all 177 Republicans were among the nays.

That’s about 177 people who probably are sold to some other nation.

Hopefully the phones just go “off” and mail is delayed until this vote is over.

…..how the Republicans hate the 11 million people that are unemployed. ……….
Folks, we have to understand that the number itself means nothing unless you know what context is referred. If you consider the above number (11M), that is ~3.6% of the population or the specious number of ~20M without health insurance(~6.7%), why would we throw out our current system to address 3.6 or 6.7 percent of the populace????? It obviously works for the vast majority.

t on January 28, 2009 at 10:39 PM

The descent into Socialism is purposful, but I don’t see how this is going to go well for the Dems.

BetseyRoss on January 28, 2009 at 10:20 PM

At the rate of decent, my only worry is if this porkfest doesn’t stall an instant (3 months) spiral, this party, (and Obama) knows they can gamble on shoving another trillon down our throats before the world chokes on this insanity. Mark my words, in less than 67 days, Obama will attempt to explain to this nation that this first trillion was only an installment.

Rovin on January 28, 2009 at 10:43 PM

Rovin,
ah man….you’re ruining my beer buzz…

jerrytbg on January 28, 2009 at 10:49 PM

Good going Republicans.!! Not being a party to the Rape of our grandchildren’s future is commendable, and, is the needed next step to keep the Party of Lincoln from going the way of the dinosaur….

Rovin on January 28, 2009 at 10:43 PM

And he’ll be floppin’ like a fish out of water as he tries, his polling is already slipping fast. When he fails to work miracles with his Dem majorities the people will be pissed and the Dems will still be trying to eat their crap sandwich with nothing to wash it down.

I really don’t think there is any question that it will pass the Senate…

I wonder how often the Plastic Jesus is having to pull his tighty whiteys out of his butt-crack at his cocktail party tonight. And if he has to do it himself or if Rahm is able to anticipate his discomfort.

califcon on January 28, 2009 at 10:55 PM

Here’s something else to discuss with your senator. This is from Watts Up With That? a weather and climate blog.

One of the commenters noted that the stimulus bill “contained 400 million for new climate scientists and 2.5 billion for carbon capture. [sic]”

Let the senators know we don’t want our money thrown away on bad science.

Forecasting Guru Announces: “no scientific basis for forecasting climate” [my emphasis]

YESTERDAY, a former chief at NASA, Dr John S. Theon, slammed the computer models used to determine future climate claiming they are not scientific in part because the modellers have “resisted making their work transparent so that it can be replicated independently by other scientists”. [1]

Today, a founder of the International Journal of Forecasting, Journal of Forecasting, International Institute of Forecasters, and International Symposium on Forecasting, and the author of Long-range Forecasting (1978, 1985), the Principles of Forecasting Handbook, and over 70 papers on forecasting, Dr J. Scott Armstrong, tabled a statement declaring that the forecasting process used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) lacks a scientific basis. [2]

What these two authorities, Drs Theon and Armstrong, are independently and explicitly stating is that the computer models underpinning the work of many scientific institutions concerned with global warming, including Australia’s CSIRO, are fundamentally flawed.
