House vote on stimulus imminent; Update: 244-188, all Republicans vote no

They’re wrapping up floor debate on the last Republican amendment on C-SPAN 1 as I write this. Is the GOP really going to walk away from this crap sandwich or will the cocktail party at 1600 tonight be even chummier than hoped? A trillion dollars is a small price to pay for bipartisanship!
Prediction: 20 Republicans defect. Exit question: Who said it? “There is a temptation to expand direct interference of state in economy. In the Soviet Union that became an absolute. We paid a very dear price for that.”
Update: Final vote: 244-188. It was 242-190 moments before they gaveled it — with every last Republican voting no — but two no votes switched at the last minute and they didn’t say who they were. I assume they’re Blue Dogs, but I’ll check. Either way, for good or ill, this is entirely the Democrats’ baby now.
Update: Here’s the guest list on that White House shindig, which should be loads of fun after this vote.
Update: WaPo confirms that all 177 Republicans were among the nays.

“Whatever”? The Congress forced him to have an illicit relationship with a woman young enough to be his daughter? Congress forced to have her give him blow jobs and have him jack off on her dress? In what alternative universe?
Congress controlled the purse strings, but Bubba controlled his zipper.

What about Sen. Martinez? I wrote him about voting against the “stimulus” bill and he bragged that he voted for the other ones and would make sure to vote for what is best for the country. I am getting ready to write him again.

Of course, Obama inherited this mess.

Obama, and his lil friendship with ACORN was instrumental in the downfall of this economy. So yes, he did inherit it. From himself, and Franks, and Dodd, and Pelosi, and Reid, and Schumer.

All right…let’s take a gander at history, shall we? And, to make it easy, we’ll just look at post Civil War when it is just the Republicans and Democrats:
1865 though 1885: All Republicans. You did have corruption in the Grant and Hayes Administrations, although Chester A. Arthur’s administration saw the Pendleton Act which set up competitive exams for civil servants. And also, Democrats, you had Boss Tweed going full tilt in NYC, so don’t get too cocky. American industrialization takes off full tilt–the transcontinental railroad is built, American steel production overtakes Great Britain as the US becomes one of the top–if not the top, steel producer in the world; J. D. Rockefeller kicks off the petroleum industry. The West was settled: It wasn’t government that created jobs here–it was the private sector.
Grover Cleveland (Democrat): The Depression of 1893
William McKinley, T. Roosevelt, William Howard Taft (Republican): American industrialization continues to lead the world–more jobs created by the private sector
Ok, Harding was a crook and a Republican.
Coolidge–The boom of the Roaring Twenties and a Republican
Hoover–Yes, the Depression occurred on his watch, but Smoot Hawley (increased tariffs) was what made it much worse.
FDR: Historians and economists are now taking the view that many of Roosevelt’s actions actually prolonged the Depression. His massive government interventions–far from getting people to work, actually contributed towards the high unemployment rate by strangling the private sector.
Eisenhower: Jobs through the private sector.
Kennedy: A Democrat who used tax cuts and the private sector to create jobs
Nixon and Ford: Stuck with Johnson’s Great Society and the poor economy caused by that massive increase in government
Reagan: One of the longest periods of economic prosperity in this nation’s history and a Republican. The private sector through tax cuts fueled this economy and pulled the country out of the recession of the Carter years–can you say stagflation?
Bush 1: Raising taxes helped to kill the Reagan recovery–even Republicans screw up (See Harding and Hoover)
Clinton: Thank the Republicans in Congress for killing HillaryCare or this situation would be an even bigger mess than it is now.
Bush II: Tried to warn people about the trainwreck, but no one would listen. Still, the tax cuts during his Presidency did bring about a lengthy period of economic prosperity. Only problem was, the Republican Congress went the same way the Republicans did during the Grant and Hayes administrations–they got fat, dumb, and lazy, and we paid the price as the pork rolled. Spending cuts must come with tax cuts–that is the lesson that should have been learned here.
Bambi: Hasn’t a clue–but he’s going to wave his magic wand and then, according to getalife, jobs, like skittles, will pop out of his butt. Yeah, sure, and if you believe that getalife, I’ve got some swampland to sell you…

\enlightenment lamp on
No, Obama didn’t say this while he ran. As late as Jan. 19 he said the gov’t is the only source that can save this economy. Today, however, he invited the corporate guns to provide cover for him, then, after they lauded him, having come to collet their dues, he lauded them, and said that only the “private sector” can create jobs.
In effect he’s just staging this fiasco to appear to be a bailout, when in fact it is nothing but more welfare, repayment of unions, and more political and other dependency.
The private sector, as he put it, will recover in time. In other words, he pretends to, and talks somewhat conservative, while pursuing his socialist and serfdom agenda. If you’re smart, you know this already.

EVERY Republican voted against!!! I’m shocked and amazed!!! Finally, some party unity. I’m not holding my breath on the Senate, but that would be amazing too!
CP on January 28, 2009 at 8:33 PM
We need to let every Republican senator know that we’ll rather vote for a Democrat than a Republican who votes for this bestiality. We have nothing to lose, if we have to go down to 20 Republican senators before we turn it around so be it. If Republicans keep acting like the last 10 years we’ll be in the minority for a couple of generations.
I hope they have learned something from the last two elections. Their only chance is to be clearly and unmistakably differentiated from the Democrats.
neuquenguy on January 28, 2009 at 8:34 PM
Those two guys are like OJ, always on the search for the “real killers”. I hope some day someone who got foreclosed on because they got a house they shouldn’t have gives them both a beatdown in a dark alley somewhere. If they were Romans, someone would have brought them to an empty room, given them a sword and left them to do the honorable thing. But, they’re mere Democrats, so we’re stuck with them.

Forgot – no, he didn’t play them. He’s not sure of his plan. If he were sure-footed on it, he wouldn’t give a rat’s ars about the other side. He has the votes in the Congress. Why do you think he wanted some conservativ votes? To have cover when the plan fails. If he’d be sure it would succeed he’d go it alone, and in 2010 take the full credit and destroy the other side. It’s all a political game, and about who wins. Anything else is pontification, idealism and emotionalism. He knows the game well. The other side just needs to internalize that there is no more to it.

A few clips from Rush today…
He doesn’t need a Republican vote at all. I think the pressure… The result of the meeting was he knows he’s in trouble ’cause he desperately wants Republican support, ’cause when this goes down the tubes, he wants to be able to say that all of Washington was complicit. He doesn’t want Republicans to be able to run reelection campaigns in 2010 and 2012 saying they opposed this when we’re in the mess that’s even deeper than it is today. So he wants Republicans there. He doesn’t want a repeat of what happened in 1993 where not one Republican voted for the Clinton budget, which then led to the Republicans’, partly a factor, taking over the House in 1994. He doesn’t need the Republicans at all. As I said yesterday, why in the world…? If this is so great, if this is so wonderful, if this package of his is going to reignite an economy like we’ve never seen before, why wouldn’t he want all the credit?
Do you realize he could destroy the Republican Party forever? If his plan works, and none of them vote for it, can you imagine what he could say four years from now? It would be the end of the Republican Party. And if that’s the case, why not do it? Because we know that in politics the objective is to wipe out your opponent. It just is. Well, the Democrat objective is. It used to be ours, but we’re going to get that back. We’re gonna get that back. So there’s a lot going on here that is underneath the surface. We’ve got perception galore today, because the picture that Obama wanted was these two CEOs and a bunch of other CEOs in the audience singing his praises, suggesting we’ve gotta get this done. They’re smiling, and they’re talking about how competent he is, how open he is, how much he listens — and he goes out and sounds like Reagan.
RUSH: Stop the tape! Blunt-force comment: He doesn’t believe a word of what he said there, because his plan has none of this in it. Folks, there’s a game going on here, a giant con game right out of Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. It is clear that he is in trouble. He thinks he’s in trouble in getting what he wants here. He’s using conservative language to a conservative group of people to promote a socialist, leftist agenda. It’s all intentional. It is all contrived. The key here is perception. He is creating perceptions. He’s a likable guy. He speaks well. But he conceals his real politics with his language. So you’ve heard two Barack Obamas separated by 20 days. You might say, “Well, how do we know which one’s real?” Go look at the stimulus plan and tell me if you can find anything in there that does anything to strengthen business, to get government out of people’s way. You will not. So what we just heard at the White House today was smoke and mirrors, a 100% show. And of course the Drive-By Media that analyzed it after it was over fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I, of course, didn’t; which is why I remain Enemy #1. Pioneers take the arrows, folks, and I have a thick skin and am eager for them to keep aiming.
RUSH: I also… My memory, ladies and gentlemen, is dancing quite rapidly here. Snerdley, help me out. Didn’t Obama say at some point that he would not sign a stimulus bill that had a lot of pork in it? He said line by line, he will not sign a stimulus bill that has pork in it — and 80% of this bill is pork!
Yep Rush, he said that on at least a few occasions while campaigning. Don’t expect the MSM to remind Obama of that or any of his other lies.

I wish my Senators were not Boxer and Feinstein so it does me little good to call them. The Ca GOP does have a good challenger for Boxer in ‘10 though, his name skips me at the moment.

I told my wife the diamond earrings she wanted were out of the question now. I told her I have to cut a check for $10,000 to give to Obama so he could plant some new grass on the National Mall that got all screwed up last week.

Dumb, dumb, dumb on the part of the Republicans! A bloc vote against the stimulus package makes the Republicans look vengeful and stupid and worse, partisan…all the reasons they got ousted in the past election. Shame, shame. The people spoke, listen! It’s a new day, that requires new tactics, not more of the same.

The Republicans have found the keys to the testicular lock box and retrieved their testicles. O happy day.
I’m glad they figured out they had NOTHING to lose and everything to gain by this. Bravo, and it’s about f@#$%^g time.
