House vote on stimulus imminent; Update: 244-188, all Republicans vote no

posted at 5:46 pm on January 28, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

They’re wrapping up floor debate on the last Republican amendment on C-SPAN 1 as I write this. Is the GOP really going to walk away from this crap sandwich or will the cocktail party at 1600 tonight be even chummier than hoped? A trillion dollars is a small price to pay for bipartisanship!

Prediction: 20 Republicans defect. Exit question: Who said it? “There is a temptation to expand direct interference of state in economy. In the Soviet Union that became an absolute. We paid a very dear price for that.”

Update: Final vote: 244-188. It was 242-190 moments before they gaveled it — with every last Republican voting no — but two no votes switched at the last minute and they didn’t say who they were. I assume they’re Blue Dogs, but I’ll check. Either way, for good or ill, this is entirely the Democrats’ baby now.

Update: Here’s the guest list on that White House shindig, which should be loads of fun after this vote.

Update: WaPo confirms that all 177 Republicans were among the nays.

The MSM says the bill failed along party lines. However, if 10 republicans had voted yes, it would be a bi-partisan bill. That’s how the MSM is going to handle this. Which suits me just fine. I want the democrats to own it.

Sue on January 28, 2009 at 6:55 PM

I’d be careful being too happy about this. Otherwise we open ourselves to the criticism that our political victory is tied to America’s economic failure, just like the left was with the Iraq war.

On the other hand … look how that turned out. :P

TheUnrepentantGeek on January 28, 2009 at 6:45

The economy will turn around… but this bill guarantees a massive deficit that will cripple those idiots tremendously.

Believe me, you’d rather pass $800 billion in pork than $800 billion in socialized health care. The former ends while the latter grows into a massive pit that will never go away.

califcon on January 28, 2009 at 7:05 PM

O.K., the Democrats own this piece of American history. Now we can see what this pork bill brings to the American people. If this bill fails to stimulate the economy, the bill will be a disaster on the American people, thus a disaster for the Democrat Party. On the other hand, if this bill stimulates the economy and brings stability to our markets in quick order, then I tip my hat to Obama and the Democrats.

Remember Democrats, this bill was sold to the American people as a “stimulus package” that must be approved immediately as to limit the damage to our markets. Some 700 pages forced through Congress before due process could possibly take place.

As the days-weeks unfold, we will all learn much about the pork included in this package; who gets it and just how this pork fits in the overall stimulus of the economy formula. If this bill turns out to be a huge scam, a historical “rip-off” of the American tax payers money; well, all I can say is this will be Obama’s legacy and Obama will be run out of town in (4) years or sooner.

Good job Republicans, the Democrats own 100% OF this bill.

Now, what about the lil fact that the potus attacked a private citizen! When are we going to see demands from our wonderful media heads for the Impeachment of this president!

Yes, I understand…. That only applies when the potus is a Republican.

So will Obama not allow the Republicans drinks at the party tonight? Or will he make Pelosi the scapegoat for including too much pork and not acting bipartisan enough? I like the bi-partisan spin of PRAVADA, just the numbers, if the reverse were the case PRAVADA would be saying the success was bi-partisan. So why wasn’t the no vote bi-partisan.

PRAVADA had an interesting history, at first the Soviets left the Soviet media alone, then times got bad and they couldn’t afford to let the bad news out. So the Soviets just one day took over the media. PRAVADA was the old Soviet name for the state run media, I see no difference today with our MSM and the old Soviet PRAVAD.

The entire Republican caucus stood firm today and that should give conservatives hope for 2010 and beyond (provided they can persuade voters – a whole ‘nother ballgame). But, really (at least for the next two years) that solidarity means nothing. The Dems can shed 15 so odd votes and still win.

I think maybe the message is being heard. Found this at The Corner at NRO:

The “Rangel Rule” [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Rep. John Carter, a Texas Republican, sent out a press release earlier today about his innovative new bill:

“Rangel Rule”

All U.S. taxpayers would enjoy the same immunity from IRS penalties and interest as House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY) and Obama Administration Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, if a bill introduced today by Congressman John Carter (R-TX) becomes law.

Carter, a former longtime Texas judge, today introduced the Rangel Rule Act of 2009, HR 735, which would prohibit the Internal Revenue Service from charging penalties and interest on back taxes against U.S. citizens. Under the proposed law, any taxpayer who wrote “Rangel Rule” on their return when paying back taxes would be immune from penalties and interest.

Great job, House Republicans! Obama met with them, but couldn’t twist any arms, and the Democrats ALONE own this trillion-dollar albatross. So much for bipartisanship.

Now comes the real test, in the Senate. Everybody knew that 177 Republicans in the House have no real power to block anything, but 41 Republicans in the Senate DO have foot-dragging power, if they have the cojones to use it!

F-I-L-I-B-U-S-T-E-R !!!

In the Senate, there are 58 Democrats, since the MN Senate race hasn’t been decided yet, including four appointed Democrats up for re-election in 2010 (Burris-IL, Gillibrand-NY, Bennet-CO, and whoever is appointed in DE (to replace Biden). Burris is an Obama clone, but Gillibrand has a centrist streak, and Bennet could be vulnerable in CO, so McConnell should get on the phone with them to support filibusters until the lavish pork is trimmed out of this bill.

Plus, there are 7 Democrat freshmen in the Senate (Begich-AK, Hagan-NC, Merkley-OR, Shaheen-NH, Udall-CO, Udall-NM, Warner-VA), who may not want to vote blindly for a huge barrel of pork as their first vote in the Senate. Begich, especially wouldn’t want to gain a reputation as a porker with Sarah Palin breathing down his neck!

Republicans don’t mind tax cuts or building bridges and highways, but they should stand their ground and try to win a few Democrats over to a filibuster, to force the Democrats to cut the fat out of this trillion-dollar pig smeared in lipstick.

Senator McConnell, pick up the phone. The ball is in your court, time to hit a winner!

No, no, no… Obama just got played by Rush Limbaugh, and the Republicans in the house trumped down!

Keemo on January 28, 2009 at 7:23 PM

To the average non political American, they saw a President doing what he campaigned on, trying to create jobs with massive job losses happening, reached out to the gop and did not get a single vote.

And when things don’t get better, the average non-political American will remember how the GOP voted.

Nice job, Mr. Boehner. You’ve redeemed yourself….for now.

I am the messenger. Do not shot me…. ha ha

Ah the Democrats are on the house floor patting each other on the back now. The progressive caucus is taking credit. It is not about money it is about jobs. This is the change America wanted. HR1 turned the page toward something new, something progressive. It hard to follow it all. They just repeat themselves several times. The progressives have created better jobs here and they will protect them.
I’m Ben Dover reporting from your House of Representatives

And in other news a woman stole a UHAUL truck and is being chased down the expressway and over sidewalks by the California Highway patrol and local PD. This is the best chase since OJ Simpson.

kanda on January 28, 2009 at 7:26 PM

Lets just hope they stick to their guns on the next go around. One can Hope right. When it comes back to the house do you think the republicans will hold their ground.

Getalife:

I thinks it the other way around the GOP just played Obami.

He thought he had them in the bag with his little metting with them and they’re suppose to go to a little get together tonight at the WH.

Obami got played by the GOP! EAT IT NOW!

I’ll take bet’s Obami won’t sign it!

I think Glenn Beck and Hannity have both mentioned that this “stimulus” bill has the beginnings of universal health care tucked into it. Don’t expect Obama and the Democrats to have a bill on the floor that just says universal health care bill. Bits and pieces of universal health care will be place in other bills.

MobileVideoEngineer on January 28, 2009 at 7:18 PM

Yes, it had millions to “prepare” people for “universal health care.”

It also had millions to set up a commission to evaluate “effectiveness” of various treatments and drugs.

This would lead to rationing of medical care. If this commission found a drug or treatment was not “effective, ” UHC wouldn’t pay for it.

Daschle has this in his book, too. He doesn’t want doctors deciding the best treatments; he wants this commission to decide.

Sure.

This was the pretty part: lofty speeches, pressers, solemnly taking the vote, pomp and circumstance.

When the results take hold (or fail to take hold in this case), all that glitz will be forgotten.

Here is the text of an email I just sent to the House Republican Conference at GOP@mail.house.gov:

Thanks to Congressman Boehner and all the hard-working Republicans in the House who voted against the awful Obama Administration “stimulus package.” I’m glad to see the House GOP still has the courage to stand up to the Democrat crowd pushing us towards socialism. Please keep holding the line against the trickery of the Dems and do not be swayed by loaded opinion polls and attacks from the Main Stream Media. I’m afraid many Americans are not fully informed as to the goals of the Obama administration and it is up to you guys to either keep the Administration in line or force the Dems to be fully responsible for their awful legislation. You have done the latter today and I am happy to see it!

Again, THANK YOU all! Keep up the good work!

I suggest anyone happy with this rare show of courage send them an email expressing your support.
