House vote on stimulus imminent; Update: 244-188, all Republicans vote no

They’re wrapping up floor debate on the last Republican amendment on C-SPAN 1 as I write this. Is the GOP really going to walk away from this crap sandwich or will the cocktail party at 1600 tonight be even chummier than hoped? A trillion dollars is a small price to pay for bipartisanship!
Prediction: 20 Republicans defect. Exit question: Who said it? “There is a temptation to expand direct interference of state in economy. In the Soviet Union that became an absolute. We paid a very dear price for that.”
Update: Final vote: 244-188. It was 242-190 moments before they gaveled it — with every last Republican voting no — but two no votes switched at the last minute and they didn’t say who they were. I assume they’re Blue Dogs, but I’ll check. Either way, for good or ill, this is entirely the Democrats’ baby now.
Update: Here’s the guest list on that White House shindig, which should be loads of fun after this vote.
Update: WaPo confirms that all 177 Republicans were among the nays.

Not to deficit spend to appease constituents and their President?
Obviously they did.

I am proud of the House republicans, but it is a sad day when I have to be excited just because my party isn’t going to be held responsible for a huge mess.

Boehner deserves a lot of credit. Some conservatives questioned him staying on as leader but his hands were somwhat tied during the Bush years. He is a true conservative (I have spoken to him twice).
Norwegian on January 28, 2009 at 6:29 PM
The message that needs to get out now is that this was rejected because it is NOT a stimulus bill. It is a social welfare bill with some road repair thrown in.
They need to make clear that they support helping people keep their jobs & homes and get back on their feet, but this was not the right bill for it. Because you know tomorrow it will be “angry bitter white racist haters don’t love children and want you to suffer just to prove a partisan point and try and keep the BUSH mentality going…”
They’re (repubs) going to have to stay strong and do a better job getting their point across, despite the biased media, or really, maybe because of it. Tomorrow ain’t gonna be pretty.

OBAMA LIED!

This is just the first skirmish in a pitched battle. It goes to the senate where they will tinker with it, then to conference where it gets tinkered some more and then back for another vote. We will surely lose some republicans at that point. Don’t let up on your congresscritters.

Sad state of affairs when this feels like a victory. Maybe the GOP can use this noble defeat as their Thermopylae. I really don’t worry about any fall out from this, if the economy recovers by 2010 it’s not like the media would have given Republicans any credit for it anyway, it will all be a testimony to the great leadership of Obama.
Dudley Smith on January 28, 2009 at 6:32 PM
How much would you like to bet that this result would have occured without Rush Limbaugh intervening and calling Obama and the GOP in Congress out?

This is as good as it could have been. These plans are going to stimulate hyperinflation. Just where is all this money coming from? This is disgusting. Every one of these are a large tax on the American people. Inflation like this lets you keep your money, but its just going to be worth less or worthless. The Media gods tell us that this is the first in a series, invest in wheel barrels my friends. I always thought that we as Americans are spoiled by location and contemporary history so we have barriers to envisioning a war on our soil, what that would really mean. The same holds true for financial disaster and I really don’t think that many grasp just track we are going down. Very unfortunate.
They opposed this plan, but with the same leadership, I feel that they would have supported another bloated plan if they were in power. They can say whatever they want because they don’t have any power. Truth to a large degree is perpetually stuck in the opposition party, yet both sides have ideological limits, so the nature of those truths depend on the situation.
LevStrauss on January 28, 2009 at 6:33 PM
When the public sees that this theft act does not in fact create jobs they are going to be pissed off. This was a big loss for Obama and his plea for a post-partisan government. He now will own the biggest deficit in history if it passes the Senate all within a month of taking office.

We moved here 2 yrs ago from Ga and went thru the Republican resurgence there. The same “feelings” are happening here so I am really hoping the trend continues. Altho, the State Reps got snookered by one of their own traitors…and he wound up in charge. That is the kind of thing that needs to change before we can move up and on. I live in Nashville..hotbed of liberalism in a redred state. It is appalling sometimes but that is how Cooper wound up being my Congressman. At least this shows it could be worse!

The GOP did what it had to do to try and yank some sense into this Debate.
John Boehner stated the case bluntly & well. If McConnel from the Senate would have been half as tough maybethe vote would have turned out differently. I hope the publicoutrage changes the Senate’s mind on the final bill.
The largestsingle bill in history, over half again as large as the regular Federal Budget for next year. God help us.

How about a mass mailing of ketchup, mustard, or mayo packets, or little bottles of hot sauce to the dems in Congress, to go with the giant crap sandwich? (or even just pictures from ads or flyers). And to any repubs who vote yes, as well.
Boudica on January 28, 2009 at 6:37 PM
It is a victory…it means that there is still some resistance to this insane Government grab of power at the expense of freedom. It means is that the Republican party may yet still be salvaged as a tool to defeat absolute state control of all means of wealth in the country. That the bill was passed was a foregone conclusion. That the Republicans in the house would actually oppose to the incredible margin that they did, was not.

The winners this week:
Rush Limbaugh – Was challenged by the most powerful man in the world and won.
House GOP & John Boehner – Not a single “yea” vote. Speaks volumes.
The losers this week:
Obama – Shown for the hypocrite he is with his “bipartisanship” BS. Loses his battle with Rush over Republican influence.
Of course, in the end the American people are loosers as well, given that the Democrats did pass a bill bound to increase the deficit by trillions and cripple the American economy.
