House vote on stimulus imminent; Update: 244-188, all Republicans vote no

posted at 5:46 pm on January 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

They’re wrapping up floor debate on the last Republican amendment on C-SPAN 1 as I write this. Is the GOP really going to walk away from this crap sandwich or will the cocktail party at 1600 tonight be even chummier than hoped? A trillion dollars is a small price to pay for bipartisanship!

Prediction: 20 Republicans defect. Exit question: Who said it? “There is a temptation to expand direct interference of state in economy. In the Soviet Union that became an absolute. We paid a very dear price for that.”

Update: Final vote: 244-188. It was 242-190 moments before they gaveled it — with every last Republican voting no — but two no votes switched at the last minute and they didn’t say who they were. I assume they’re Blue Dogs, but I’ll check. Either way, for good or ill, this is entirely the Democrats’ baby now.

Update: Here’s the guest list on that White House shindig, which should be loads of fun after this vote.

Update: WaPo confirms that all 177 Republicans were among the nays.

Prediction: Enough Republicans defect for this crap sandwich to pass with flying colors. That way they can all be liked by the Messiah and feel that they acted in a bipartisan manner. What’s $1 trillion if it means you get invited to more cocktail parties?

amerpundit on January 28, 2009 at 5:48 PM

Do you think the folks who vote against it will be uncomfortable at the party?

Whatever, AP. You loves these bills.

And, seriously, what will this change? How many crap sandwiches have certain Repubs eaten over the years? And they’re still on the Hill.

None of this matters.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on January 28, 2009 at 5:55 PM

I seriously don’t see how any Republican could vote for this. A trillion dollars in hand off to the Friends of O and a few billion that could be labeled a “stimulus” package in any way shape or form.

And even if you don’t give a damn about the country – and the generations coming that will pay for this handout – this won’t help Republicans politically either. It is Obama’s baby, unless it fails, then it is his and everyone that signed on to it…

Any Republican who votes for this crap sandwich should be told to switch party affiliation, and forget about coming around sucking for campaign funds when faced with re-election.

Every GOP vote for the stimulus gives the Dems cover AND allows another Dem to vote against the package. Some Dems will vote against it because they run in conservative districts.

Five months ago, most people in the US would have said that the national government was not in private enterprise and should not be in private enterprise.

Four months ago, the national government told us that it would use tax dollars to suck the poisonous bad loans out of the financial markets and eventually turn them into a profit for the treasury.

Three months ago, the national government told us that it preferred to use the money to purchase or prop up financial institutions.

Two months ago, the national government told us that it had to give our money to nearly bankrupt automobile manufacturers without requiring any specific operating changes beyond the curtailment of the use of private jets by company executives.

One month ago, the national government told us that they needed to spend another 800-plus billion dollars on projects that would create new jobs, have a net positive return on investment, and otherwise “get economy moving again.”

Last week, we learned part of this stimulative injection envisioned by our representatives was to take the form of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of government rubbers.

To recap, in four months, the people in private business have gone from generally believing that the government only affected them through regulations and taxes to now seeing that they could at any time suddenly be in competition with a four-trillion-dollar, retarded gorilla.

Business that should go into bankruptcy will now hold out for a handout (ala GM and Chrysler). Businesses that manage themselves better than their competitors may see their competitors revived by injections of tax dollars (ala Ford).

All the flailing about that the retarded gorilla is doing — all the ever changing plans to do something and do it now; all the ever changing suggestions about what the new tax policy will be; all the clear signaling that the road to financial success has been re-routed to pass through Washington; and especially the statement that this trillion-dollar-deficit state of affairs will likely prevail for years — all of that has made it impossible for private business people to predict what next week is going to bring, let alone next quarter and next year.

Rational businesses do not take risks without having a reasonable expectation that the risk will result in profits. At this point, no one has any idea which areas of the economy the retarded gorilla is going to trample next.

When people cannot evaluate the risks; they cannot make plans. When they cannot make plans, they just hold what they got. This will continue until the gorilla calms back down.
