Gingrey to Rush: I’m Sorry, So Sorry

posted at 12:50 pm on January 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) made headlines when he criticized Rush Limbaugh for hammering Republican leadership for their pliability on massive Democratic spending plans.  He scoffed at the idea that Rush provides leadership, telling Politico that Rush and other commentators were merely “living well” and not having to worry about what was best for the party.  Today, Gingrey is singing another tune entirely, attempting to clear up the “misunderstanding”:

Because of the high volume of phone calls and correspondence received by my office since the Politico article ran, I wanted to take a moment to speak directly to grassroots conservatives.  Let me assure you, I am one of you.  I believe I was sent to Washington to fight for and defend our traditional values of smaller government, lower taxes, a strong national defense, and the lives of the unborn.  In my six years in Washington, I have led the charge on many of these issues.  In fact, in 2008 The National Journal ranked me the #1 most conservative Member of the House of Representatives.

As long as I am in the Congress, I will continue to fight for and defend our sacred values.  I have actively opposed every bailout, every rebate check, every so called “stimulus.”  And on so many of these things, I see eye-to-eye with Rush Limbaugh.  Regardless of what yesterday’s headline may have read, I never told Rush to back off. I regret and apologize for the fact that my comments have offended and upset my fellow conservatives—that was not my intent.  I am also sorry to see that my comments in defense of our Republican Leadership read much harsher than they actually were intended, but I recognize it is my responsibility to clarify my own comments.

Now more than ever, we need to articulate a clear conservative message that distinguishes our values and our approach from those of liberal Democrats who are seeking to move our nation in the wrong direction. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Newt Gingrich, and other conservative giants are the voices of the conservative movement’s conscience.  Everyday, millions and millions of Americans—myself included—turn on their radios and televisions to listen to what they have to say, and we are inspired by their words and by their determination.  At the end of the day, every member of the conservative movement, from our political commentators and thinkers to our elected officials, share an important and common purpose in advancing the cause of liberty, reigning in a bloated federal government, and defending our traditional family values.

I’d agree that we need to articulate a clear conservative message — and that the GOP caucuses in the House and Senate have thus far failed to do so, and have failed at it for the last few years.  Rather than take shots at Limbaugh, Hannity, and fellow Georgian Newt Gingrich, they should be listening to them.  Because, despite Barack Obama’s fantasies, the Republicans in Congress stopped doing that after they won the majority in 1994, and they’re paying the price now.

They have a golden opportunity before them now to demonstrate that they’ve learned from their bingeing on government pork and reckless spending between 2001-6.  The stimulus bill represents everything conservatives fight against.  If the Republicans don’t stand up for efficiency, accountability, and responsible governance now, they won’t get another chance for years as this turkey burdens another generation with its irresponsible spending.

In the meantime, for our friend Rep. Gingrey, we’d like to hear a few choruses of the Brenda Lee classic:

Good lawd, man, good music died when Jethro Tull faded from the scene and Led Zep hung it up. Dare I say that when Jim and Jimi were called home, things became grim?

Ok, we had Clapton and SRV for most of the decade, but after that the list becomes paltry.

Mr Gingrey is from my county and I have met him on a couple of occasions and he really is a good guy, but stepping into this mess between Rush and Barack is a no win situation, which Barack just like Harry Reid found out last year, will wind up being a losing proposition.

That’s as good an apology as you’re likely to get from any politician. It was well-phrased and I believe him. He has an outstanding track record, after all. Let us forgive Dr. Gingrey and be hopeful that not just Dr. Gingrey, but all elected Republicans, will learn from this and be more mindful of their base from this point forward.

OneVision on January 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM

Apparently Gingrey’s votes accord with conservative philosophy. Actions speak louder than words, and I am sure that the representative will be careful how he responds to the media in the future. He made a credible apology. End of story.

To everyone who wants to spend the day “eating one of our own” — and one of our more straightforward, conservative own, at that:

- We are now using money we don’t have to fund abortions around the globe
- We have a Treasury Secretary who admitted that, had he not been caught, he never would have paid his taxes (for which he was reimbursed by his employer)
- Congress is about to pass the biggest scam in the history of our nation, costing untold future generations untold amounts of money (again, that we don’t have), of which 95% will benefit no one but the libtard powers that be

We need to be serious. We need to focus on the real problems and not be distracted by MSM created piffles.

Honestly it sounds like an offhanded comment that got printed in the paper sans any real context. Like, “Yeah well Rush can just sit there and talk, he’s got it easy.” Which is pretty inoffensive as comments go XP

I happen to live in Mr. Gingrey’s district and have the distinct pleasure of getting to vote for him in this previous election. I sincerely believe that his apology letter is 100% accurate…if you look at Mr. Gingrey’s record he is the most staunch conservative in Congress today. He is an honest, hard-working representative for his constituents here in NorthWest Georgia and we love him up here. We gave him almost 70% of the vote this year… Anyway, I think his apology letter is more in line with what he was trying to express to Jonathan Martin then his interview was.

Gingrey was on with Laura Inghram about two hours before he did Rush, and came out directly and said “I made a mistake” without any pre- or post-apology qualifiers. Reminded me of when Democratic Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock and Gov. Ann Richards floated a proposal in 1991 to create a state income tax in Texas. After the tsunami of protests hit his office, Bob not only said “I made a mistake”, but pushed through a law requiring a constitutional amendment be passed by voters before any income tax could ever be implemented. That was an example of getting the voters’ message (and Bob stayed in office until he retired. Ann, on the other hand…)

he said this:

I think that our leadership, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, are taking the right approach,” [Rep. Tom] Price [Rep. Phil Gingrey] said. “I mean, it’s easy if you’re Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or even sometimes Newt Gingrich to stand back and throw bricks. You don’t have to try to do what’s best for your people and your party. You know you’re just on these talk shows and you’re living well and plus you stir up a bit of controversy and gin the base and that sort of that thing

What I take from this is the Rush Limbaughs are throwing bricks, stirring up controversy and ‘ginning’ the base

Now he apologizes:

Regardless of what yesterday’s headline may have read, I never told Rush to back off. I regret and apologize for the fact that my comments have offended and upset my fellow conservatives—that was not my intent

Then what was his intent? Rush doesn’t throw bricks. Rush throws opinions. Are conservatives supposed to shut up and let the party elites run things? If people like Rush did not toss opinions, these same party elites would announce that the public agrees with their actions.

In the last election it was obvious the party wanted conservatives to shut up and vote – a winning strategy

He can apologize but it is obvious to me he thinks the public is a pack of fools. Meanwhile the MSM is using 90 percent of the media to ‘gin’ their base

‘Gin the base’ is very insulting and shows contempt for the public

In one week, Obama has managed to strengthen the resolve of the Republicans to oppose the Great Pork Package AND has increased Rush’s audience and public support. Add this to the fact that Putin is delighted with Obama’s new missile program for Europe (none) and that the Iran’s nutcase leader is asking for an apology, I am going to have to declare the honeymoon phase is completely over. Would it be too pushy to demand the start of divorce proceedings.

The gop have an alternative stimulus bill.

Tax cuts for the rich and the same failed trickle down bs.

When the gop turn to a entertainer for leadership, they are in deep trouble.

You mean that old failed policy of Reagan’s that took us from double digit infaltion to low singles, the one that dropped interest rates on home mortgages from 18 to 8 percent in 2 short years. The policy that dropped unemployment to the point that it almost didn’t exist. That failed policy. That policy that failed so badly that it took Democrats almost three decades to get us back to where we are now? That BS?

Don’t be bitter because you are poor. Yeah lets tax those evil people that actually work and employ other people in this country. I grew out of class envy on the playground…looks like you never will.

As opposed to the libs trying to elect Al Franken (an entertainer in the technical sense, not literal), or Jesse Ventura, or almost appointing Princess Kennedy.

Franken won. He is a Senator.

rush does not have the guts to run and give up that contract.

He will always be just an entertainer.

getalife on January 28, 2009 at 4:48 PM

i’m not worried about it! i just enjoy watching you guys reel! but my point stands, as long as your party remains one of just heterosexual whites you’ll never be in the majority again, get used to it…

“Two UCLA economists say they have figured out why the Great Depression dragged on for almost 15 years, and they blame a suspect previously thought to be beyond reproach: President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After scrutinizing Roosevelt’s record for four years, Harold L. Cole and Lee E. Ohanian conclude in a new study that New Deal policies signed into law 71 years ago thwarted economic recovery for seven long years”.

Ditto, and I couldn’t agree more.

Plus…Dr. Gingrey delivered my youngest son a little over 13 years ago, so I’m willing to cut him some slack! :-)

Castigating our party for being made up of only heterosexual whites yet she has no qualms with 94% of black people voting for Obama. She can’t see the Racist Forest through the racist trees.

Better late than never. A well placed wake up call by his constituents is all that was needed…..

DL13 on January 29, 2009 at 12:21 AM

Note how every liberal drone has been fed the line that economic freedom and pro-growth policies are “trickle down” ideology.

Trickle down? A trillion dollar of pork, bankrupting smokestack industries with cap-and-trade, nationalized healthcare and feeding the People´s money to your political constituencies are not exactly “trickle up”.

What could be more autocratic as well as incompetent than saddling the private sectors – that´s you, dummy – with trillions of debt in the middle of a recession and spending 90 % of it on pet projects to ensure reelection?

Isn´t that a lot of money trickling down, alas neither to the poor nor the productive but to the connected.

Obama said they wanted to grow the economy from the bottom up. Too bad he doesn´t know anything about it. The only people who ever grew the economy from the bottom up are Reaganite supply siders.

Get a clue. He will still be a gutless weasel just a more cautious gutless weasel.

He should be hung along with Boehner and McConnell. I suppose voting them out would be more civilized. I have to admit I admire McConnell’s procedural skills. He made a monkey out of Reid the last two years but he’s only effective in the minority. These losers had the majority and used it to screw their country in every way possible. I really would prefer a necktie party.
