Dueling petitions on Rush Limbaugh

posted at 10:50 am on January 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Haven’t we gone through this before?  Democrats have tried to take on Rush Limbaugh, only to come up embarrassed and reeling.  The last time, Harry Reid wound up making $4 million for charity by writing an ill-advised threat to the talk-radio giant and wound up having to admit defeat.  Now the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has a petition drive to do … well, no one knows exactly what:

Last week, Rush Limbaugh actually said that he “hopes” President Obama fails to meet America’s challenges.

Jobs, health care, our place in the world — the stakes for our nation are high and every American needs President Obama to succeed.

Stand strong against Rush Limbaugh’s Attacks — sign our petition, telling Rush what you think of his attacks on President Obama. We’ll send Limbaugh your comments.

And what exactly will the petition prove?  That Democrats don’t like Rush Limbaugh?  Well, that’s certainly breaking news.  I’m certain Rush will quake in his boots to see the list of Democratic saps who just got their names and e-mail addresses on the DCCC’s fundraising lists.

The DCCC has a pretty transparent motivation here, which is to build those lists for their 2010 election campaigns.  Note that the full name, e-mail address, and zip code are required fields.  They missed a step by not requiring a cell phone number; the Obama campaign used text messaging for GOTV efforts in November, and apparently had a lot of success with it.  Otherwise, they’ve covered all the bases in setting a trap for the foolish and easily led.

In other words, the DCCC doesn’t dislike Rush Limbaugh.  They need Rush as a fundraising gimmick.  If it wasn’t Rush, they’d screech about Hugh Hewitt, Michael Medved, Ann Coulter, or Laura Ingraham.  In fact, don’t be surprised to see something similar for Coulter on the off chance that she makes a controversial statement about Obama in the next few months.  I know, I know, it’s a longshot, but one never knows.

The Left seems to be in full screeching, hysterical meltdown mode over Rush Limbaugh these days, which seems pretty odd since they have won two successive national elections.  Barack Obama worries about him enough to explicitly reference him to Republicans.  Jack Cafferty at CNN, a recovering alcoholic himself, calls him an “Oxycontin aficionado,” which makes as much sense as dismissing Cafferty as a distillery enthusiast.  Whatever else the Left says about Rush, they’re obviously and almost obsessively worried about him — and they should be.

Rush has an answer today to the DCCC.  He has a headline banner linking back to the DCCC’s comment pages, asking readers to load them up with demands to stop lying about the stimulus bill and stop distorting Rush’s remarks.  He has already had an effect, as this blog post at the DCCC site shows.  It indicates that over 500 comments have been received, but only shows the first 300 — and I’d bet that the rest overwhelmingly support Rush.  Feel free to add your own in support of Rush and in support of independent political voices.

Don’t waste time with petitions – just do whatever small bit you can to make sure Barry does fail.

Vashta.Nerada on January 28, 2009 at 10:57 AM

just posted this with the headlines thread about the petition… my note left on the dccc site with a junk email address:
Rush Limbaugh.. in my opinion… does not espouse the
“if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” concept
His beliefs and his right to express them are guaranteed in the constitution. You have the same rights and can disagree with him, create a petition, ask for signatures…. he calls for a reverse petition… and on and on it goes.
I know what Rush is accomplishing as an entertainer on a radio show: publicity and ratings… i.e. his job.
My question: what part of your organizations’ mission statement are you accomplishing with this tactic?

FLKraKa on January 28, 2009 at 10:58 AM

Which side would it help if I sign the petition with a positive message?

The Left has been in screeching. hysterical mode for as along as I have been paying attention, which is just over 30 years.

If it wasn’t Rush, they’d screech about Hugh Hewitt, Michael Medved, Ann Coulter, or Laura Ingraham.

Only two of your alternatives are conservatives and they just happen to have ovaries.

Rush is awesome! This is why he makes hundreds of millions in his contracts! Libtards are jealous, that’s all. They can’t keep their radio shows on the air without asking for taxpayer bailouts.

Rush really has a wonderful situation in terms of supporting the foundation of what made this country the greatest while benefiting from the capitalist system that it until recently existed to defend.

Go Rush, the anti-Obama.

They’re screeching because they really think they can get rid of him now – with the help of The One of course.

FuriousAmerican on January 28, 2009 at 11:04 AM

Don’t forget another angle – the Alinsky rules – this is a case of fixing or freezing the opponent. They are trying to hang an albatross around Rush’s neck. The facts won’t matter. The meaning of Rush’s words and the gross misrepresentation of his message won’t matter. All that will matter is that by the time they are done, if this works, when you say “Rush” all the neutral people will reflexively think “hater.” They are not so much whipping up the left, or attacking the right. They are laying the foundations necessary to forever capture the middle.

Actually, I think they are pretty successfully whipping up the right, too. I’ve got 2 feet of snow falling outside my door right now, but if there was a DC rally for Rush tomorrow, I’d find a way to be there.

I actually wish the right had been this whipped up before the election, but oh well.

blatantblue on January 28, 2009 at 11:11 AM

This is WRONG WRONG WRONG. They are misrepresenting what was said. He did not say “fail to meet America’s challenges.” He said he wants Obama’s liberal policies to fail. I blogged on this last week, Rush is 100% right.

True conservatives want liberal policies to fail. They are in direct contrast with our values, and often in direct contrast with financial and business logic. To my left-leaning friends I ask:

* Do you want the Bush tax cuts to be repealed?
* Did you want Bush to fail with any and all opposition to overturning Roe v. Wade?
* Did you want Bush to fail with any opposition to stem cell research?

If so, you wanted Bush to fail, and there is nothing wrong with that. Obama’s policies concerning welfare, job creation and international law will bankrupt America and diminish our freedoms. You cannot tax your way to prosperity. You cannot make America better by printing more money and soaking the rich. You cannot make America better by falsely promising to work across the aisle, yet reminding your opponents of your role by saying “I won.” A true leader works to bring people together, I have yet to see a single thing that President Obama has proposed or done to do this.

“The Left seems to be in full screeching, hysterical meltdown mode over Rush Limbaugh these days, which seems pretty odd since they have won two successive national elections.”

This why the Left should never, ever be in control of gov’t. The only place they can have is the not-so-loyal-opposition. They weren’t loyal when they were the minority, and this proves that they have to lie and shriek to maintain control over their moronic supporters.

I don’t get what the Democrats hope to gain here – the most effective strategy would be to IGNORE him – pass the stim bill and proclaim victory (which is what they’ll do anyway). I keep thinking that the Dem’s are over reacting in a major way with this and it will come back to bite them in the near future. Why draw all this attn. to him and his criticism if they want to marginalize what he says/does? Doesn’t make any sense.

Some of you people — and the Dimwit Dems — really crack me up.

Limbaugh is reveling in this, and doing what he can to fan the flames. Why? It gets him free publicity, and thus more listeners, and thus more money, all of which are the name of his game.

I agree with much — most — of what he bloviates about when it’s not personal aggrandizement(though I can’t stand listening to him) but I find it hilarious that his is building up his own cult to rival that of Osama Obama, and those who rail most loudly about the Obamanoids are helping him do it.

Why does everyone assume the radical left is going to mellow out now? They will not. They will get drunk on power.

The radical left will get nuttier and nuttier with each passing day.

You could see this begin to happen with Joe the Plumber and Palin. Much like Nazis and Islamists, they demonize their opponents until they seem subhuman.

Witness the “Jail Bush and Cheney” drives on a major network each night. Witness the mass murder attempt on Palin’s church where they tried to kill kids.

While your statement that this whole shebang benefits Rush is probably true, I do not believe that is his motivation in fanning the flames.

He simply doesn’t NEED to. He has more money than he needs already, and a multi-year contract to boot. He donates vast sums to charities every year, most of which is done very quietly and frequently anonymously. I know this because a cousin of mine worked for him for several years back in the 90s.

I want Rush to get even louder! We need every voice raised against this socialist takeover.

Thank you. He doesn’t care about money. He’s got everything he wants. His studio is quite simple in design. He has what he has.

His concern is truly about America, not about making a few hundred million more.

blatantblue on January 28, 2009 at 11:51 AM

Strangely, I did just that before I even knew Rush was asking people to do so. In fact because I signed it not long after it was posted, I’d guess that my signature was one of the first 300 and was excised because of nonconformity.

Mercutio on January 28, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Rush needs to diet again, we can’t afford to lose him anytime soon

Agreed

blatantblue on January 28, 2009 at 11:54 AM

I signed “Rush’s petition”, at the DNCC, and didn’t mind one bit, giving my name and address!
And in the comments, I added this promise: “Want a revolution in our country? Want angry constituants in your faces, next year? Jus’ keep it up, Dems. Remember 1994?”

localmalcontent on January 28, 2009 at 11:55 AM

Rush for king!!!

americanfrenchie on January 28, 2009 at 11:57 AM

I don’t know why everyone is picking on Rush Limbaugh. If you listen to him you know that he is down to working only part-time.

thegreatbeast on January 28, 2009 at 11:59 AM

The democrats are overreacting to this whole thing. It’s not like Rush called Obama Chimpy McHitler. Bush was treated badly during his whole presidence, yet the Republicans took it in stride. It comes with the territory. Man up and accept it, Dems, it’s a free country and Rush can say whatever he wants to as long as he doesn’t call anyone a nappy headed you know what. What I want to know is where’s the petition objecting to this crap sandwich they call a stimulus bill? That’s a real issue, not Rush’s radio show.

scalleywag on January 28, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Now the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has a petition drive to do … well, no one knows exactly what:

The criminals at the DCCC are trying to take the emphasis off the filthy bastard and corruption already running rife in the failed Obama administration by focusing in on Limbaugh. Rush never said he wants America to fail to meet the challenges it faces- he just said that he wants Obama’s schemes for meeting those challenges to fail. There is a huge difference there.

Oh for the days of the Clintons when it was only screwing interns instead of the real criminals currently in charge of the nation.

I’m with Rush on this one. It has nothing to do with being offended and everything to do with silencing a prominent voice of Conservatism. They look at getting rid of Hannity and Limbaugh as the coup de grâce of their November win. They want to destroy any opposition.

hawkdriver on January 28, 2009 at 12:07 PM

I think they just poked a hornets nest.

What I want is every politician who is in favor of Obama’s Stimulus Package to forgo their Federal Pensions, if the Stimulus Package doesn’t work.

Let’s see how many are in favor of this Stimulus Package then.

PappaMac on January 28, 2009 at 12:08 PM

MrScibbler,

I don’t understand your comparison.

Obama supporters are followers to a man who has no accomplishments or experience under his belt (other than playing the Chicago game very well), and want to give this man the most powerful authoritative position in the most powerful country in the world.

Rush supporters simply want to fight to have free speech remain free in this country. He embodies the 1st Amendment completely, and its potential to be taken away.

We are not quite the mindless robots you believe we are. If you don’t have free speech, you don’t have a free country.

ErinF on January 28, 2009 at 12:09 PM

Emanuel, you horrible bastard.

cntrlfrk on January 28, 2009 at 12:11 PM

These Democrats have been whining about Rush forever and they only make him more popular.

JammieWearingFool on January 28, 2009 at 12:11 PM

They want to destroy any opposition.

hawkdriver on January 28, 2009 at 12:07 PM

I agree. Between this and the stimulus bill, they’re totally out of control. It would be laughable if the consequences of their actions weren’t so dire.

scalleywag on January 28, 2009 at 12:13 PM

In other words, the DCCC doesn’t dislike Rush Limbaugh. They need Rush as a fundraising gimmick. If it wasn’t Rush, they’d screech about Hugh Hewitt, Michael Medved, Ann Coulter, or Laura Ingraham. In fact, don’t be surprised to see something similar for Coulter on the off chance that she makes a controversial statement about Obama in the next few months.

Help the DCCC better understand the law of unintended consequences, boys and girls. Waste their resources and abuse their scummy personal, just as I did with the vaunted Obama email list.
