Dueling petitions on Rush Limbaugh

posted at 10:50 am on January 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Haven’t we gone through this before?  Democrats have tried to take on Rush Limbaugh, only to come up embarrassed and reeling.  The last time, Harry Reid wound up making $4 million for charity by writing an ill-advised threat to the talk-radio giant and wound up having to admit defeat.  Now the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has a petition drive to do … well, no one knows exactly what:

Last week, Rush Limbaugh actually said that he “hopes” President Obama fails to meet America’s challenges.

Jobs, health care, our place in the world — the stakes for our nation are high and every American needs President Obama to succeed.

Stand strong against Rush Limbaugh’s Attacks — sign our petition, telling Rush what you think of his attacks on President Obama. We’ll send Limbaugh your comments.

And what exactly will the petition prove?  That Democrats don’t like Rush Limbaugh?  Well, that’s certainly breaking news.  I’m certain Rush will quake in his boots to see the list of Democratic saps who just got their names and e-mail addresses on the DCCC’s fundraising lists.

The DCCC has a pretty transparent motivation here, which is to build those lists for their 2010 election campaigns.  Note that the full name, e-mail address, and zip code are required fields.  They missed a step by not requiring a cell phone number; the Obama campaign used text messaging for GOTV efforts in November, and apparently had a lot of success with it.  Otherwise, they’ve covered all the bases in setting a trap for the foolish and easily led.

In other words, the DCCC doesn’t dislike Rush Limbaugh.  They need Rush as a fundraising gimmick.  If it wasn’t Rush, they’d screech about Hugh Hewitt, Michael Medved, Ann Coulter, or Laura Ingraham.  In fact, don’t be surprised to see something similar for Coulter on the off chance that she makes a controversial statement about Obama in the next few months.  I know, I know, it’s a longshot, but one never knows.

The Left seems to be in full screeching, hysterical meltdown mode over Rush Limbaugh these days, which seems pretty odd since they have won two successive national elections.  Barack Obama worries about him enough to explicitly reference him to Republicans.  Jack Cafferty at CNN, a recovering alcoholic himself, calls him an “Oxycontin aficionado,” which makes as much sense as dismissing Cafferty as a distillery enthusiast.  Whatever else the Left says about Rush, they’re obviously and almost obsessively worried about him — and they should be.

Rush has an answer today to the DCCC.  He has a headline banner linking back to the DCCC’s comment pages, asking readers to load them up with demands to stop lying about the stimulus bill and stop distorting Rush’s remarks.  He has already had an effect, as this blog post at the DCCC site shows.  It indicates that over 500 comments have been received, but only shows the first 300 — and I’d bet that the rest overwhelmingly support Rush.  Feel free to add your own in support of Rush and in support of independent political voices.

That’s right, don’t do what will create the most good in this country. Don’t make constructive changes in the way we do things; SUPPRESS THE OPPOSITION INSTEAD. HEIL HITLER….!

“DL13 on January 28, 2009 at 12:17 PM”

ah-yup …

/trying to think of a way the donks could have mobilized the righty base faster and more efficiently against this congress — not coming up with anything!

Buckaroo on January 28, 2009 at 12:18 PM

What I want is every politician who is in favor of Obama’s Stimulus Package to forgo their Federal Pensions, if the Stimulus Package doesn’t work.

Let’s see how many are in favor of this Stimulus Package then.

PappaMac on January 28, 2009 at 12:08 PM

I’d sign a petition for that! Like Krauthammer said on Fox yesterday, most of what is in that package should be line items in the regular budget, they don’t have anything to do with stimulating the economy. The Dems are trying to pull a fast one.

scalleywag on January 28, 2009 at 12:20 PM

Next thing you know they’ll want Krauthammer to shut up too. He knows this stimulus bill will fail to help the economy. Millions for the Smithsonian? Good cause but how does giving them millions stimulate the economy?

scalleywag on January 28, 2009 at 12:22 PM

I wrote a letter to the DCCC. You can read it here, if you so choose. You can post your own letter to them at http://www.dccc.org/page/s/contact

I also hope this President fails to bring socialism to our great land.

BoomJunkie on January 28, 2009 at 12:22 PM

Hope everyone is flooding the DCCC site to help counter their cute little petition.

neal7 on January 28, 2009 at 12:26 PM

Has The One responded to Rush’s 54-46% stimulus plan yet?

Didn’t think so.

IrishEi on January 28, 2009 at 12:29 PM

Watch out because if you write the DCCC your coment is disregarded and they then count you as one that is with them against Rush

Rick007 on January 28, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Also, I think using the backspace and re-entering what you said in the comment page seems to work. Can anyone confirm?

Kokonut on January 28, 2009 at 12:32 PM

Before all you smug bugs celebrate the latest idiocy from the Dems, remember that we Conservatives spent two years pointing out the unsuitability of Obama…and look where that got him.
I don’t have an answer. Speak up and you energize their base, remain quiet and get mowed over in 2010.

Doug on January 28, 2009 at 12:34 PM

anyone who gives the dccc traffic is simply helping them in this effort, regardless of what you say over there — jmo, but the dccc is like kos, huffpo, mslsd, etc. — NO TRAFFIC! they can’t thrive if you don’t give them food …

Buckaroo on January 28, 2009 at 12:34 PM

Gingrey is on Rush now….apologizing for yesterday’s comments.

IrishEi on January 28, 2009 at 12:36 PM

I’ve never been a big Rush fan, but this crowd of losers is quickly turning me into one. I doubt that’s what they had in mind.

rockmom on January 28, 2009 at 12:36 PM

Gingrey’s on Rush apologizing right now!
Somebody definitely got taken to the woodshed. Rush is telling him Obama’s trying to co-opt the Republicans.

kingsjester on January 28, 2009 at 12:37 PM

Also, speaking of incredulity at all this I’ve come across finding a picture of Adolph Hitler using the same “O” Obama hand sign in the name of “unity” in the effort to show support for socialism and socialist ideals. Who would have thought that the same hand sign would be used today in the name of unity again?

Utterly surreal!

Kokonut on January 28, 2009 at 12:37 PM

Last week, Rush Limbaugh actually said that he “hopes” President Obama fails to meet America’s challenges.

Strawman. Rush did not say that.

cryptojunkie on January 28, 2009 at 12:44 PM

Heres the whole deal with the stimulus package. Screw everybody that is hurting today! This package is aimed at the 2010 and 2012 election years only to keep the Dam O Freaking Craps in power for the next ten years at least. This package is designed in screwing every hard working Joe the Plumber.
Notice how we already spent 500 Billion and not a job created. It went to pay the people who donate to the Damn O Freaking Crap party. 12 Million for Butt F Frank for a failing bank in his home district.

Get you heads out you Lousy Rep’s in Congress. If you loose you jobs who the hell cares? Your not doing our business your just looking out for your cushy jobs in the future. Fight for the little people even if you think in two years you might have to go to work and earn a living.

The Damn O Freaking Craps have allot of votes in their pockets. IE: The ones that sat on their asses during the flooding from Katrina. The ones that put up pictures of shit and call it art.The ones that spend their Wick moneys to purchase drugs. This includes Whites Blacks and Latinos who rather sit on their asses than work for wages.

It appears that the DCCC petition website Condemning Rush Limbaugh’s “out-of-context” comment isn’t permitting any further comments, at this time. Those that are visible are all in support of Rush Limbaugh.

sinsing on January 28, 2009 at 12:48 PM

Quick: don’t think about Rush Limbaugh.

Akzed on January 28, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Once again, I have to thank the liberal loonies for making me see the light. Their egregious stance on late-term and partial birth abortion converted me to pro-life. Now they’ve made me convert from a wishy-washy David Brooks RINO to a full-on Rush Conservative. Thanks guys!

Laura in Maryland on January 28, 2009 at 12:59 PM

A political party is demonizing the opposition to drum up support for themselves. Film at eleven! Does anyone think the GOP doesn’t engage in these kinds of things?

DeathToMediaHacks on January 28, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Watch out folks!!!! I just tried to post, on the anti Limbaugh petition site again, because my earlier post was deleted or not posted. Now they have it set up in a way that even if you post a positive message about Limbaugh it is sent, as if you are against Limbaugh. Damn!

Be careful.

Maybe HotAir will set up a petition drive, in support of Rush Limbaugh to counter the buffoons at the DCCC.

sinsing on January 28, 2009 at 1:07 PM

I read a bunch of the comments. They appeared to run about 80% in favor of Rush. Perhaps the DCCC forgot to ask Soros’ permission or the Kos Kids haven’t been told to hate Limbaugh enmasse yet.

Snake307 on January 28, 2009 at 1:07 PM

Here’s the comment I sent the DCCCC (the extra C is for Communist):

“Thanks for distorting Mr. Limbaugh’s words, trampling on his free speech, and demonizing him instead of debating the issues. It gave me the biggest laugh I’ve had in days. You people are bound and determined to shoot yourselves in the foot. It’s great that you let Rush help you aim.”

starboardhelm on January 28, 2009 at 1:12 PM

I put my address in there
I HOPE the Liberal NAZIS will call me
Because i will gibve them an earful..

I also had fun by putting in PRO Rush stuff
so when rush gets it (if they actually have the BALLS to send it) rush will get tons of nice compliments..

Democrats == Stupid no matter what they plan

Snake307 on January 28, 2009 at 1:07 PM

They may not know about the petitions yet, but the Kos Kiddies already have a diary up about why Obama called Rush out. (emphasis mine)

…Obama’s plan. It’s not just to marginalize Limbaugh’s influence by making him look petty and foolish; it’s to change the nature of political discourse in this country, whose current mode of diatribe and invective Limbaugh is largely responsible for; he has been setting that tone since 1984. Limbaugh not only represents everything Obama despises about the state of American politics; he started it.

The diary is hysterical. Also, they actually think Rush is upset because he wasn’t invited to the Obama/conservative dinner at George Wills’ house.

Too funny.

IrishEi on January 28, 2009 at 1:25 PM

800+ comments on dccc, but only getting 300 to load on most refreshes. Guess they had enough!

neal7 on January 28, 2009 at 2:07 PM

looks like they fixed it.
now at 900 messages. I’d say 98% in support of Rush

neal7 on January 28, 2009 at 2:08 PM

Rush is the man. A model American.

Black Adam on January 28, 2009 at 2:12 PM

Let’s not forget the most important dynamic to this play by the Lib’s… The President of the United States of America, attacked a private citizen. The Lib’s prepared papers and were ready to launch a demand for IMPEACHMENT on Nixon through the Liberal Media not that long ago. The IMPEACHMENT papers were based almost entirely on the fact that Nixon had a “black list” of media heads (private citizens).

Not one call for the IMPEACHMENT of Obama by the Liberal Media, and this lack of protection of the private sector needs to be addressed by the MSM as was the case with Nixon.

Yes, we should all aspire to be an obese drug abuser with 3 divorces behind us.

Sent the DCCC a nice polite but lengthy email. Has anyone notice; DCCC is like USSR?

foxone on January 28, 2009 at 2:44 PM

Here’s what I wrote the DNC wankers:

You are a disgrace for running an anti-free speech “petition” against a radio talk show (Rush Limbaugh).

You are socialist, anti-liberty freaks and that is why I left the Dhimmicrat Party on 9/11/2001.

Anti-American. Global freezing…er…warming…er….CHANGE hoaxes. Yes, hoaxes.

If not for the lyin’ propaganda media you would have nothing and be nothing.

Keep trying to ruin the country.

American Revolution II will be coming.

Did I already say you were a disgrace? Why yes. Yes I did, but let me say it again:

YOU…ARE…A…DISGRACE.

(and get a real job…a productive job, intead of a government make-work job….sheesh).

Let’s roll!

Presumably you’ve got Bush on the record calling out one of his critics by name. (And “on the record” doesn’t mean “off-mike,” but go ahead.)

Would you rather we aspire to be a drug snorting, dope smoking failed community organizer who attended a racist church for 20 years?

Mallard T. Drake on January 28, 2009 at 3:04 PM

I too hope Obama fails to implement policies that I believe are harmful.

I hope that Obama succeeds in implementing policies that I agree with him on. I just don’t know of any.

I fail to understand how bankrupting the government will save the economy.

Its amazing how the Dems and liberals always need to word their statements as if they’re talking to 5 year olds:

Jobs, health care, our place in the world — the stakes for our nation are high and every American needs President Obama to succeed.

Our PLACE in the world?

What kinda BS is that? I know exactly where the United States is…

mikeyboss on January 28, 2009 at 4:55 PM

Liberals are uneasy with the whole free speech thing. They believe they should have a monopoly on free speech, the press, guns. Notice that the Democrats don’t engage Limbaugh’s argument but challenge his right to say it.

Tantor on January 28, 2009 at 6:42 PM

This comment made it onto the DCCC blogpost page:

I’m somewhat disappointed in my party right now…

The (edited) audio recording posted on this page:

“If I wanted Obama to succeed, I’d be happy the Republicans have laid down. I don’t want this to work. So I’m thinking of replying to the guy, “Okay, I’ll send you a response, but I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.”

The actual words Limbaugh said, according to the transcript on his webpage:

“If I wanted Obama to succeed, I’d be happy the Republicans have laid down. And I would be encouraging Republicans to lay down and support him. Look, what he’s talking about is the absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care. I do not want the government in charge of all of these things. I don’t want this to work. So I’m thinking of replying to the guy, “Okay, I’ll send you a response, but I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.”

It’s somewhat discouraging to me that a fellow Democrat would think that in order to discredit a smear merchant like Limbaugh, we would have to resort to similar tactics. Doctoring his message plays right into the Republicans’ hands.

Dems have driven me to Rush. I can’t get enough conservative talk, blogs or TV shows now. This is an epic mistake on Obama and Dems part. Go figure…it’s only week two.

Rockygold on January 28, 2009 at 8:56 PM

I hate to have to say this, but the DCCC have about the best “conservative” forum on the net right now. All these other right wing forums best watch out. The Rush Limbaugh thread over there is absolutely awesome. If they start a few more, like a Hannity, Malkin, Ingraham or… dare I say it… Coulter thread, I think you guys will all be toast, looking for new jobs, picking up crumbs.
-
Who would have thunk it, the dems supporting Rush like that?

RalphyBoy on January 28, 2009 at 9:16 PM

There were 1404 posts and it appeared that this idea is almost equal to the “Stimulus” Bill. Have there been any further comments from the brain trust that threw this up?

Cindy Munford on January 28, 2009 at 10:46 PM

Feel free to add your own in support of Rush and in support of independent political voices.

Been there, and did that a day before this was posted. I guess I’m on the cutting edge. :oP

Smart Girl Politics has a petition in Support of Free Speech for everyone, including Rush. It seems the Dems want to stifle all opposition, but free speech is not just for Democrats and we have to remind them again and again. Please sign at;

The last time, Harry Reid wound up making $4 million for charity by writing an ill-advised threat to the talk-radio giant and wound up having to admit defeat

When Rush made that donation, I emailed my Senator, Jim Webb and asked if he were going to make a matching donation. I got a really nasty letter back condemning Rush and explaining why he would not be making a donation. The guy works for me – I guess he had a memory lapse.

Rick007 on January 28, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Not to mention they’ll flood your inbox with democrat propaganda spam.

abcurtis on January 29, 2009 at 8:28 AM

“And what exactly will the petition prove? That Democrats don’t like Rush Limbaugh?”

Well in my case, I took the opportunity to tell the Democrats that I despise them and to F-off. No doubt “George Washington” from a liberal enclave suburb outside of Chicago with an email address at that great University (nospam.edu) will be banned from “signing the petition” in the future.

Look, if you don’t want to be sent to a future “reeducation camp” because you dare to be a Hot Air commentator (and by their definition, scum unfit to be allowed to speak), then you better start pushing back hard, NOW!
