CIA station chief a serial rapist?

posted at 2:25 pm on January 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

ABC News reports that the Department of Justice has launched an investigation into a CIA station chief that may have drugged and raped Muslim women in Algeria and Egypt.  Following at least two specific complaints, investigators discovered secret surveillance tapes in the agent’s possession showing sex acts between him and a number of women, as well as a cache of pills of an undetermined type.  The women claimed to have been drugged prior to the sexual assaults:

The CIA’s station chief at its sensitive post in Algeria is under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for allegedly raping at least two Muslim women who claim he laced their drinks with a knock-out drug, U.S. law enforcement sources tell ABC News.

Officials say the 41-year old CIA officer, a convert to Islam, was ordered home by the U.S. Ambassador, David Pearce, in October after the women came forward with their rape allegations in September.

The discovery of more than a dozen videotapes showing the CIA officer engaged in sex acts with other women has led the Justice Department to broaden its investigation to include at least one other Arab country, Egypt, where the CIA officer had been posted earlier in his career, according to law enforcement officials. …

Following the initial complaints, U.S. officials say they obtained a warrant from a federal judge in Washington, D.C. in October to search the station chief’s CIA-provided residence in Algiers and turned up the videos that appear to have been secretly recorded and show, they say, the CIA officer engaged in sexual acts.

Officials say one of the alleged victims is seen on tape, in a “semi-conscious state.”

It’s impossible to overstate the damage this could do to the US, both diplomatically and in the war on terror.  Algeria is a critical station for intelligence against al-Qaeda, and one of the most active subgroups of AQ operates in that country.  Reports of biological weapons research by al-Qaeda in the Maghreb (AQIM) and laboratory accidents underscores the need for robust CIA work in the country, which will almost certainly suffer serious damage and a curtailment of cooperation.

We can expect to see rabid protests and demonstrations around the Muslim world in the next few days.  It practically corroborates every lunatic theory about the US used by the Islamist terrorists.  America goes to the ummah to rape its women and steal the lands!  The Prophet Cartoons protests were irrationally violent, and I’d bet they’ll pale in comparison if this turns out to be true.  Americans traveling abroad will have to take extra precautions — like adopting British and Canadian accents, eh?  And the accused rapist’s status as a Muslim won’t mean a thing under these circumstances.

If the DoJ proves this in court, this man should never breathe free air again.  For a country in the middle of the war we’re in, this comes close to treason.

A muslim-converted CIA agent? Sounds like an Obama voter.

Norwegian on January 28, 2009 at 2:29 PM

a convert to Islam

All criminal acts done before the conversion?

I wonder if the Algerians would insist on the evidence rules in Islam, in which a woman’s testimony is worth half or something like that, of a man’s. Which is why rape vicitms get prosecuted for adultery when they file charges against their attackers. And, as happened in Somalia, get stoned to death for adultery.

Wethal on January 28, 2009 at 2:29 PM

Can we ask the Saudis to handle the trial, sentencing, and eventual execution?

Oh wait, they stone the *victims*, not the rapists.

My bad!

I’d suggest turning him over to Algerian authorities, but he knows too much. A lifetime in Leavenworth is in order, if he is guilty.

One question, did this behavior start before or after he converted to Islam?

41-year old convert to Islam posted to the Middle East? Who was running the security and the personnel shop when this happened?

Stupidity on the part of the division that assigned him. Criminality on his part. No excuses. Just plain criminal.

If they got taped evidence, then nail his butt to the wall post haste…

coldwarrior on January 28, 2009 at 2:31 PM

Does sharia law demand that these women be punished for intoxication and unlawful sexual acts?

This is disgusting behavior on his part, if it’s true, and he should be punished, but let’s not forget what would happen to these women if it was a local guy who did this to them and didn’t videotape it.

it doesn’t have to be true to cause riots, all that is needed is a story like this to be published. see Koran/toilet story.

jp on January 28, 2009 at 2:33 PM

Don’t hyperventilate. It’s one guy. Of course, they were Muslim, he was in a Muslim country.

If groups use the acts of one person to commit acts of mischief, then why blame us – blame them.

The questions that need to be asked:

Who would leak this? Why now?

Why would anyone bring charges against a CIA officer? Are they real?

Nobody who willingly converts to Islam should be considered sane, let alone given a position in the United States government. Let the Egyptians do whatever they do to him (although I suppose that could mean stoning the victims as whores).

Jim Treacher on January 28, 2009 at 2:37 PM

So many questions: 1. the womens’ drinks were drugged – was this lemonade, or are we missing the part of the story when these women were going into bars in Algeria? 2. he is a convert to islam – before or after the incidents? 3. adultery is punishable by stoning the women – yet the man is in custody?

Vashta.Nerada on January 28, 2009 at 2:37 PM

Skywise on January 28, 2009 at 2:42 PM

Under cover in more ways than one, it appears. /s

Yes. Which is a small problem with prosecution. Still a federal offense to reveal the identity of a covert officer. Not so much to protect the guy, but to protect any and all foreigners overseas who ever had contact with him…i.e., one of our guys gets the black passport (diplomatic status) treatment (PNG’d, hustled out of the country) while the foreigners get the basic security service treatment…suspected of espionage even if they were merely the delivery man who dropped off groceries every week. A lot of countries take as dim view of their nationals spending time with CIA officers…they shoot them, then hold a trial.

Westerners need to get their heads out of their butts and stop projecting Western values onto the arab/persian/muslim world. It just DOES NOT work that way. They enjoy killing their own daughters as the response to a look at “the wrong boy”. Get a grip.
