Top Republican to Limbaugh: It’s easy to talk, not so easy to lead; Update: Quote misattributed

posted at 6:10 pm on January 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

A response to Rush’s claim that Obama fears him more than he does John Boehner: When you have to worry about reelection, ideological purity is a luxury you can’t afford.

“I think that our leadership, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, are taking the right approach,” [Rep. Tom] Price [Rep. Phil Gingrey] said. “I mean, it’s easy if you’re Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or even sometimes Newt Gingrich to stand back and throw bricks. You don’t have to try to do what’s best for your people and your party. You know you’re just on these talk shows and you’re living well and plus you stir up a bit of controversy and gin the base and that sort of that thing. But when it comes to true leadership, not that these people couldn’t be or wouldn’t be good leaders, they’re not in that position of John Boehner or Mitch McConnell.

Asked to respond to Gingrey, Limbaugh, in an email to Politico, wrote: “I’m sure he is doing his best but it does not appear to be good enough. He may not have noticed that the number of Republican colleagues he has in the House has dwindled. And they will dwindle more if he and his friends don’t show more leadership and effectiveness in battling the most left-wing agenda in modern history. And they won’t continue to lose because of me, but because of their relationship with the grassroots, which is hurting. Conservatives want leadership from those who claim to represent them. And we’ll know it when we see it.”

I.e. we’ll know it if they stick to their guns about opposing the stimulus, which Obama’s press secretary told the press corps this afternoon he doesn’t think they’ll do. Neither do I — not all of them, anyway. Let’s settle this.

Update: A botched quote from Politico: It was Phil Gingrey who made the statement about Limbaugh, not Tom Price. I’ve corrected the quote above.

If was Phil Gingrey, R-Ga, not Tom Price.

I also note that Drudge is reporting that the Democrats are taking up a petition against Rush.

You don’t have to try to do what’s best for your people and your party.

That’s not hard. Just vote conservative principles consistently. The rest takes care of itself.

When you need the (R) or (D) next to their name after a quote to distinguish which party they are with, Republicans are in serious trouble.

portlandon on January 27, 2009 at 6:15 PM

That’s why these worthless Congresss critters ignore the oath they took when they entered office to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.

They’ve embraced socialism, because they can keep their jobs and not have to worry about reelection. These crooks are so hardened by years in DC, they actually despise those they are elected by and sworn to represent.

chunderroad on January 27, 2009 at 6:15 PM

I’m telling you guys… sign my petition!

The only hope to get republicans to rethink this stuff is to show significant support for something radically different.

You might want to try that yourself, Mr. Price.

JetBoy on January 27, 2009 at 6:18 PM

I disagree with Rush’s criticism of the Republican House Leadership if he’s talking about what they’re doing right now. They began to do a good job when the kept the Capitol open with no lights during the drill here, drill now episode, and since that time I began to have new respect for them.

But, yeah, prior to that, and for the past few years they’ve been dismal.

Phil, Tom, Whoever. Look, it’s not about Rush. Rush has a radio show that allows us to vent and communicate with morons like you how we feel about what is going on. I will grant you that without his show you and your buddies would get away with just about anything you wanted. But his show does exist, and he isn’t the pied piper – he has a megaphone that we can all participate in. Including people who might disagree, unlike those “shows” on the left. Get over it.
And update your resume while you are at it because there are going to be several people running for office against republican incumbents – and I am sending a check to just about every friggin one of them.

If he interfered with the primary by endorsing somebody, that would have been the end of it. He’s far more a conservative than a Republican, and he knows better than to interfere in the primary – he’d be partially on the hook for failure.

As he said, rooting for conservatism is one thing, but “that’s not the same as talking up the GOP, which is currently led by moderates and appeasers.”

You’re all a bunch of whiney-@ss pompous babies who do nothing but take our money and screw us for your entire term in office, and then turn around and beg us for more money and our votes when you want to get re-elected. Yeah, real f***ing tough job you got there, dipsh!ts. Give me a break.

None of these @ssjacks give two rat feces about their constituents or the country. They care about nothing except holding power and keeping their cush Washington jobs. So the way they do that is to ignore their oaths to be *servants* to the country, ignore their constituents and do everything they can to reward lobbyists and big campaign donors.

F*** the whole lot of them, Republican and Democrat alike. F***ing pathetic.

To say that because Rush isn’t an elected Republican that he is by default just an entertainer is silly. He is a political pundit, witty and brilliant, and a marvelous entertainer. He clearly communicates a political philosophy which resonates with millions of American voters–voters the GOP often get–but not always! Republican politicians don’t have to listen to Limbaugh, they have to try and get the voters that like Limbaugh. And Limbaugh has the right to criticize them as much as he likes. As Rush likes to remind politicians, they didn’t make him, and they won’t be able to break him. Also, what’s up with those thin-skinned congressional prima-donas? Good grief!

(And I don’t care where Dems get their marching orders from. I just find it ridiculous that they would get them from uneducated Hollywood actors, but hey, whatever floats their boat. Frankly, with Marx and Lenin, I don’t know why they need diCaprio.)

I wouldn’t describe Gingrey as a “Top Republican”. That is neither an endorsement or a criticism of Gingrey.

Gingrey does have a point that Rush is not in the same position as they are. Despite being in the minority with a wildly popular a President, they are doing a very good job of exposing the horrors of this bill, and providing sound alternatives. Wisely, they are making Pelosi the target instead of Obama, which, like it or not, makes sense politically at this point in time.

Maybe we all need to chill out a little and see what happens with the vote tomorrow – which you all can help along by calling your representative in the House or sending a quick email.

Buy Danish on January 27, 2009 at 6:51 PM

From Gingrich to Gingrey — more proof that Darwin was wrong.

In 1995, after the GOP took back the Congress, Republicans who called themselves the Dittohead Caucus made Rush Limbaugh an honorary member. In the years since that historic victory, it’s not Rush who failed to carry the mantle of Reagan conservatism.

How many Republicans will vote for the stimulus?
12 or more in the Senate, 25 or more in the House
Less than 12 in the Senate, 25 or more in the House
12 or more in the Senate, less than 25 in the House
Less than 12 in the Senate, less than 25 in the House

Update: A botched quote from Politico: It was Phil Gingrey who made the statement about Limbaugh, not Tom Price. I’ve corrected the quote above.

If they were leading , no one would complain..

the_nile on January 27, 2009 at 6:12 PM

If was Phil Gingrey, R-Ga, not Tom Price.

I also note that Drudge is reporting that the Democrats are taking up a petition against Rush.

Skywise on January 27, 2009 at 6:13 PM

DaveS on January 27, 2009 at 6:15 PM

# 4 of your proposals will hold alot of people back from supporting it, even if they agree with the first 3. The first 3 make a lot of sense and could be done quickly. # 4 should only happen after a long series of debates and analysis.

URGENT MEMORANDUM
FROM: A GRASSROOTS REPUBLICAN VOTER
TO: Representative John Boehner, Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative Phil Gingery

DEAR SIRS:

FOLLOWING IS NOT THE SAME THING AS LEADING!!! IF YOU JUMP WHEN OBAMA SAYS JUMP, IF YOU WALK WHERE OBAMA TELLS YOU TO WALK, AND IF YOU SAY WHAT OBAMA TELLS YOU TO SAY— YOU ARE NOT LEADING, YOU ARE FOLLOWING.

IF THE BLIND LEADS THE SPINELESS, WILL THEY NOT BOTH END UP IN A DITCH?

SINCERELY YOURS,
FUNDAMENTAL FRED

Fundamental Fred on January 27, 2009 at 6:54 PM

Blame Bush, now blame Rush. These whiners are not leaders.

This is all so silly and it demonstrates why the republicans continue to lose elections. They need to get off their ass, untangle their panties and get to work.

Wade on January 27, 2009 at 6:54 PM

yikes ! Sorry folks. I need to go find my glasses. Didn’t mean to have such a heavy thumb.

Red State State of Mind on January 27, 2009 at 6:55 PM

Keep talkin’ Rush. I, for one, feel I am out in the wilderness waiting for a bold and sane leader to show some conservative principles and live by them. I don’t care if it is man, woman, black, white, anything in between. I just want a leader to stand up to the libtards.

How about a Million Conservative March on Washington DC?
pugwriter on January 27, 2009 at 6:50 PM

I suggested a 20 million march on Washington the other day if they try to enact a “fairness doctrine” and was told by a lefty kook that we’d all be arrested if we tried that.

I said it the other day. National strike. Stay home one day, shut down the country.

JiangxiDad on January 27, 2009 at 6:56 PM

How about a Million Conservative March on Washington DC? I’ll put the my plane tix and hotel on plastic, what the hell.

We would be attacked the entire way. Then again, relieving some stress through liberal facial deconstruction would be helpful to my psyche.

Bishop on January 27, 2009 at 6:56 PM

Putting out firs, while letting others smolder or burn, or tossing kerosene on others, is not leadership, Mr. Gingrey…and by extension Mr.’s McConnell and John Boehner. Primping for the cameras, being one vote out of 100 or 400+ from time to time is not the way to demonstrate leadership. What you are exhibiting is crisis management, and poorly.

If you haven’t gotten the gist of leadership versus management, perhaps you need to step away from Capital Hill, and get a real job that involves the lives and livelihood of real people, lots of people, who depend on your signature and cash every two weeks when they draw their pay.

coldwarrior on January 27, 2009 at 6:57 PM

I’m betting they’ll do the right thing. Susan Collins’s vote against Geithner yesterday makes me optimistic that the RINOs are finally catching on that the base is riled.

joe_doufu on January 27, 2009 at 6:57 PM

Those will be deleted. Freedom of speech and opinion packed its bags the moment Ogabe announced his candidacy.

Bishop on January 27, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Well, my first thought is that freedom of speech doesn’t really apply to the DCCC website.

My second is that, when my comment there is deleted, I’ll be happy knowing that the DCCC actually has to pay someone to spend their time deleting respectful comments. I can’t think of a better use for DCCC resources.

Please…I think Limbaugh is being give FAR too much credit. He’s an entertainer, nothing more.

Oh, what utter drivel. Rush Limbaugh is a brilliant, articulate thinker and the most significant, clear-headed conservative advocate since Ronald Reagan. He is a national treasure

You can contact Rep. Gingrey at gingrey.ga@mail.house.gov.

Terrie on January 27, 2009 at 6:51 PM

Fine! Will you tell him to vote against the stimulus or rant about Rush?

Buy Danish on January 27, 2009 at 6:58 PM

This stimulus bill will show us who the conservatives are, and who the weenies are.
GOVERN YOURSELVES ACCORDINGLY
vote against any fuktard who votes for this crap sandwich.

UNREPENTANT CONSERVATIVE CAPITOLIST on January 27, 2009 at 6:58 PM

You want a leader I’ll lead! Get to the phones and email ASAP and shred those lines! We need an effort like the one that crushed the immigration reform. Someone needs to start putting up links to email addresses of Congressmen and Senators. There done!

I suggest a 20 million march on Washington not to protest, but to physically drag these bums out of Congress, every last one but a handful.
