Palin launches new PAC? Update: Legit

posted at 12:35 pm on January 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

I think it’s legit, but hold off on donating just yet. The only reporter to have any firsthand knowledge of its provenance appears to be Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams:

She’s also launching her national political action committee. Registered in Virginia, patterned after Hillary’s HillPac, Sarahpac.com is to support ideas and candidates who share the Palin vision that energy independence is this country’s future.

Next month she addresses a Washington gathering of prominent conservatives. She’s going ahead with a book. Her Facebook page has 410,000 friends. She wants to influence policy knowing the nation must turn to Alaska as its energy resource. She’s planning to be president.

Greta picked it up from there, as did James Pethokoukis at U.S. News, as did wowOwow. But when the Anchorage Daily News dialed the number, all they got was this:

So far, though, the PAC doesn’t appear to be registered with the Federal Election Commission. When I called the number listed on sarahpac.com, I got a message that referred me back to the information on the website. The answering machine message doesn’t say anything about questions from the general public, but it asks reporters with questions about the PAC to leave their name and number.

They were probably planning to roll it out later this week and Adams got a tip that the site was already live, but as I say, hang on to your money until someone confirms it. If it is for real, expect some of the money to go to green causes to help recast the ‘Cuda as a centrist. And the media to pay very close attention to how much money her PAC’s raising compared to Huck’s and Mitt’s.

Adams also claims Palin will be at the Alfalfa Club dinner with Obama that’s coming up; take a gander at the membership roll. Exit question: Will she be “nominated”?

Update: The boss just got off the phone with a spokesman for Campaign Solutions, the site’s registrar, who told her it’s for real and that the PAC papers were filed with the FEC yesterday.

My “Don’t Blame Me, I Vote for Palin” bumper stickers have shipped! YAY!

Though, she may be running for President of the Middle States in four years, while they’re fighting the parentheses.

PastorJon on January 27, 2009 at 12:39 PM

Palin is probably unelectable at the presidential level. However, she might be able to nail a senate seat.

moxie_neanderthal on January 27, 2009 at 12:40 PM

One of the evening’s activities includes the playful nomination of a presidential candidate by the Club’s leadership. The candidate is then required to make a speech. Interestingly, several such candidates went on to hold the actual presidency after being nominated, including Richard Nixon in 1965 (elected in 1968), Ronald Reagan in 1974 (elected in 1980), and George W. Bush in 1998 (elected in 2000). In 2004, the Club nominated the former president of the Motion Picture Association of America, Jack Valenti. Its 2000 nomination was Australian-born James Wolfensohn, constitutionally ineligible for election to the U.S. presidency. In 2001, the presidential nomination went to John McCain.

That explains it…

Vashta.Nerada on January 27, 2009 at 12:41 PM

I hope she uses part of the funds to support a conservative candidate in the AZ primary for senate against maverick.

who cares… this is 4 years away

One of the issues in the 2008 election was that the GOP was split and the party nominee (McCain/Palin) did not even gain complete consensus and/or support of mainstream Republicans; hopefully Gov. Palin can achieve the support of all in the GOP if she decides to run in 2012 and become the banner GOP candidate WE CAN ALL support. BTW: In my opinion it is none too early to start the next campaign for president by the GOP; Obama and Co. cleaned our clocks in the 2008 election and he did it by starting early and getting his campaign focused. You can disagree with him but his campaign methods were phenomenally successful. As mentioned, I hope Sarah Palin decides to run and wish her well with this PAC.

Go Sarah…

From the headline’s thread:

I am suspicious. The “About Sarah” page says she is chairman of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, she isn’t, although she was last year.

Jim62sch on January 27, 2009 at 12:33 PM

Good catch. The Bio may have been copy and pasted from another page by staff, but I would certainly hold off from donating till you get confirmation. The PAC Bio page seems to be an abbreviated version (whole passages are exactly the same, while others are completely left out of the PAC’s bio) of the official State of AK bio, but even that reads “past chair”.

Well, the die has been cast. Sarah has declared. I am 100% behind her. Today is the day we start the drive to take back America and preserve its Constitution, freedoms and the free enterprise system for future generations.

Nah, make it Palin/Sanford. Palin’s got the star power, the support of the conservative base, and the ability to raise way more money than Sanford ever could.

But I do think a ticket of 2 governors is the way to go next time around. I can’t see anyone from Congress being too popular in 4 years given the way they’re spending taxpayer dollars.

I donated to a political candidate for the first time ever in the last election right after McCain selected Palin for his running mate. This time around I’ll do whatever I can. Work the phone banks, go door-to-door, donate money. If there’s enough of this country left to salvage in 2012, people like Palin, Sanford, and Jindal may be our last hope.

I dont see a clear front runner right now. The party still has not found itself. Their is too much infighting, conservatives, religious people, ron paul repubs and other groups. There is no clear meaning of what a Republican is anymore. Some people who are Republican are for small government and reducing our military presence overseas, others are for bigger government and bigger military spending. Some want the gov’t to mandate morals to society, others want gov’t out of their lives.

Until the party finds its identity again its too early to call a front runner

SKYFOX on January 27, 2009 at 1:10 PM

Sarah has now set the scene for her speech at CPAC at the end of February. Now the world will assess her speech in terms of how Presidential she sounds. People say the next election is way off but really what they’re hoping is that Sarah fizzles out and falls off the map.

Unless Sarah is hampered by her family, disabled or dead no force on earth will deter her from her appointed mission. Take it from someone who has made a study of superstars and/or people with charisma–they only go away if they want to go away or stay beyond their prime. Look it appears Sarah is not going to disappear and at 45 she is well into her prime and not about to leave it anytime soon.

Meh – I’m holding off on the “Palin is pro-amnesty” thing until I see some indication of it outside the campaign statement. We all know that one of McCain’s pipe dreams was getting the Hispanic vote, so I have little doubt that Palin was emphatically told not to disrupt that “strategy”.

I can’t think of her publicly breaking with McCain on anything else besides ANWR – the Bill Ayers line of attack against The One was probably a trial balloon the campaign premiered with Palin, to see if it would fly for McCain. It never did because the press branded questions about Ayers as RAAAACIIISSSTTT.

Jim62sch on January 27, 2009 at 1:13 PM

My pick for 2012 is still MARK SANFORD. The guy is the real deal, I don’t know why he’s not already being prepped to be THE guy.

But Palin, if she does a good solid conservative job over the next 4 years is a viable option. She is a rockstar within the GOP, and they can’t be discounted.

Let’s be honest, she’d do pretty well in Iowa, and if Mark Sanford doesn’t run she’d do well in South Carolina. New Hampshire might be tougher sledding.

My pick for 2012 is still MARK SANFORD. The guy is the real deal, I don’t know why he’s not already being prepped to be THE guy.

Because, sadly, the dude looks like Guy Smiley.

Pasalubong on January 27, 2009 at 1:16 PM

I have never seen you post before, offroadaz. If there is so much infighting and tons of different directions to go, who are you to say that Palin is not the future of the party? How can you possibly know?

jimmy the notable on January 27, 2009 at 1:08 PM

Ive been here for awhile. Google site:hotair.com offroadaz

Maybe I should rephrase my statement though. Palin is not my choice for the future. She has some good ideas, but she also has allot of viewpoints I strongly disagree with.

offroadaz on January 27, 2009 at 1:17 PM

Fresh air from outside Washington…. that is CHANGE we need. The One’s first week was just more of the same from the wrong direction, but with a surprising number of gaffes to keep me entertained.

I’m signed up.

Hannity is not a journalist.

faraway on January 27, 2009 at 1:17 PM

Unlike you, AP, Sarah Palin has convictions and standards. She won’t say “amnesty’s the way to go” because, also unlike you, she doesn’t go through life with her finger in the wind waiting to see what she should believe today.

SKYFOX on January 27, 2009 at 1:10 PM

Surely this comment is proof that you’re wrong about AP. Putting my finger to the wind, I know that it’s unwise for AP to say anything even remotely negative about Palin on this blog.

And Palin was soft on illegal immigration during the election. Whether that was her position or McCain’s is a separate issue.

But not my boss!

Allahpundit on January 27, 2009 at 1:02 PM

Nor I nor many people here. That is one sin Sarah could commit that would end it. People are so angry about illegal immigration that many are ready to start their own party over that issue alone.

I like Gov. Palin. A lot. But I’d go with someone else if she turns out to support amnesty.

Esthier on January 27, 2009 at 1:18 PM

I’m in!

Seven Percent Solution on January 27, 2009 at 1:18 PM

It’s a disgrace that conservative journalists like Hannity don’t press her on this subject when they interview her.

Allahpundit on January 27, 2009 at 1:16 PM

That might require Hannity to come up with an original thought, though. You guys need to get The Boss to interview her for HA!

Pasalubong on January 27, 2009 at 1:18 PM

Esthier on January 27, 2009 at 1:18 PM

This is why we have Obama. Thanks.

Allahpundit on January 27, 2009 at 1:16 PM

Here’s an idea, AP. Let’s WAIT AND SEE. There’s no reason to hang her before she’s actually said something on the subject that wasn’t part of a campaign.

And why does she want to paint herself as a centrist? Has she said that’s her plan? Is it because the McCain campaign worked so darn well with him painted as a centrist that she wants to repeat the success? Or are you just making it up so you can come up with an excuse to say she’ll say something so that you can attack her for that thing that she hasn’t yet said.

More idiots for imaginary “energy independence”.

Myths About Breaking Our Foreign Oil Habit (The Washington Post)
The Idiocy of Energy Independence (John Stossel, ABC News)

- Only 1.5% of the United States electrical generation comes from oil (EIA) (48% Coal, 20% Natural Gas, 19% Nuclear)

Alaska is great and all but there is not remotely enough oil there to remotely Saudi Arabia let alone Canada:

- 32 Billion barrels of oil are estimated in ANWR, NPRA and the Central North Slope in Alaska (USGS)
- 260 Billion barrels of oil are estimated in Saudi Arabia (EIA)
- 173 to 315 Billion (1.7-2.5 Trillion potential) barrels of oil are estimated in the Oil Sands of Alberta, Canada (Alberta Department of Energy)

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think Palin’s …
Allahpundit on January 27, 2009 at 1:16 PM

She’s the future and 2012 ready. Any McCain drivel (aka., amnesty) atttributed to her is precisely that, drivel.

GO SARAH!! 2012!!

Palin/Jindal

Here’s an idea, AP. Let’s WAIT AND SEE.

Ditto, Jimmy.

My prediction: this news will bring out all the trolls in full force. Expect 1000 threads.

offroadaz on January 27, 2009 at 1:17 PM

Well okay then, that’s the way you should have phrased it to start. I hate it when people say things about Palin like they are written in stone. With everyone else, they make it sort of “I think Fred Thompson ….” With Palin, everyone wants to pretend like they are speaking for the TRUE source of the party.
