MSNBC anchor to Chip Saltsman: Stop blaming the media for the “Magic Negro” kerfuffle

posted at 7:15 pm on January 27, 2009 by Allahpundit

From the network that’s “opened its heart to change,” watch how an interview magically turns into a lecture before your very eyes. Saltsman’s defense is lame, but we’ve hashed that out before; read Ace’s post last month about the difference in intent between David Ehrenstein’s LA Times op-ed and tittering at the word “Negro” in the song. Looks like Brewer knew he was going to go there and was waiting to spring her righteous indignance shtick; nice to see Megyn Kelly’s influence spreading to other networks, at least.

Nice to see Megyn Kelly’s influence spreading to other networks, at least.

Very tarnished silver lining. She just cut his balls off at the end. He was reduced to agreeing with her and saying “Yes ma’am.”

I don’t know how close this guy ever really was to being RNC chair, but thank God we dodged that bullet. Closely tied to Huckabee, and also an idiot in his own right.

Really? I thought it was very clever. I agree it wasn’t the smartest move for a RNC Chair candidate to distribute.

It’s a “if you can’t understand the satire, get out of the kitchen (or whatever would go here)” situation.

darii on January 27, 2009 at 7:35 PM

Wow, AP I can’t believe you agree with this anchor. Newsflash, Negro isn’t derogatory.

That lady wanted to talk about blacks and republicans. She said that you can’t win an election without the black vote and McCain got 4% of the black vote.

That COULD be more because a BLACK GUY WAS RUNNING than an indictment on the R party getting the black vote. But no, that’s not her premise.

Her premise is that yes indeed, Bush does hate black people, and the Republican party is a bunch of racists.

McCain nearly admitted to being racist for apologizing for voting against MLK day. He would only apologize if he voted against it because he didn’t like black people. . . which makes him racist. . . and so he wouldn’t get black votes.

Also, McCain LOVED Hispanics. I don’t care what you say, the black community is uneasy at best with the Hispanic community because they are becoming the largest minority group. . . that means less government dollars for blacks as a whole.

Anyway, the anchor lady was trying to ‘prove’ that Republicans are racists. . . and she did – it’s her show. But for AP to agree with her makes me think he’s thinking with the wrong head here.

canopfor on January 27, 2009 at 7:49 PM

Is the term ‘negro’ offensive? Well, offence can be taken at anything. A better question is whether something is meant to be offensive.

I don’t think the ‘Magic Negro’ song in question was intending to be offensive but it was certainly obvious that it wouldn’t play well in the media or public at large so sending it out was a huge mistake.

Noneya on January 27, 2009 at 7:51 PM

I like the name noneya. . . like ‘none of your business’.

ThackerAgency on January 27, 2009 at 7:51 PM

The song isn’t funny because of the word Negro. I.e. the people that find that song funny aren’t “tittering” at the word. It’s funny because of the absurdity of Al Sharpton singing about how he’s been looked over for a shiny new, unknown magic entity in Obama, which is made all the more absurd because of its accuracy.

Why put the word in there? In short, because it points out the inherent, intransigent racism of the left epitomized in the “magic negro” conceit. Everything within the worldview of the left is Manichean. The “man” and the “common man,” the workers and management, industry and the environment, proletariat and bourgeois, the “white devil” and the “magic negro.” We are all archetypes of some sort, to be either glorified or damned by the saviors of mankind: the activist, personified currently by The One.

No one is an individual. No story is unique. We are all part of some victim group to be coddled and manipulated by demagogues and political pimps.

Regardless, I have a much, much better question to why it should be in the song. Why shouldn’t it be in the song?

spmat on January 27, 2009 at 7:51 PM

Also, how much air time has that racist rap song sung by Jay Z got?

Isn’t “Magic Negro” a Hollywood term describing a type of character?

You know the stereotype, who’s not always a black man, but usually some kind of native who helps the hero by showing him an inner truth, or helping him develop spiritually to the point where he can complete the quest/mission/win the game/win the girl.

Here is the Wiki entry on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_negro

It is interesting that that description was popularized by Spike Lee!

Johnny 100 Pesos on January 27, 2009 at 9:32 PM

Allah, you’ve truely gone daft.

What I see here is Saltsman trying — trying- to “remind” Brewer that the song was a parody of an L.A. Times article and Brewer, cluelessly, accusing Saltsman of “blaming the messenger”.

As for yer premise: Similar attitude. Granted. But dissimilar preparation.

The difference is that Kelly has her sh*t together and Brewer’s a lame wannabe.

Isn’t “Magic Negro” a Hollywood term describing a type of character?

Johnny 100 Pesos on January 27, 2009 at 9:32 PM

Yes, but it is a concept at home in a leftist worldview. The underprivileged (those people who are not white) cannot help it that they are criminals. They cannot help it that they are inferior. It isn’t their fault. It’s the “white devil’s” fault, the “man’s” fault, society’s fault; it’s the fault of racism inherent in the system (capitalism). No man owns his own life, the good or the bad. Every man is subject to society.

It has no place in any self-respecting libertarian or conservative worldview. Every man is responsible for himself. No man has a right to blame any other man, or any other thing, for his failings. In the end, what he does wrong as well as what he does right is, to the extent to which his own behavior affected the outcome, his own doing, his property.

The left is at the forefront in terms of using the antiquated term ‘nigger’. In rap, movies and whatever else. They revel in it, and the leftist crackers are in cahoots. The music played at some dance recitals and games includes the “N” word but no one ever complains. Maybe they (the audience/parents) don’t read the lyrics. Also there’s portrayals of girls as bitches and boys as dogs.

Let’s be clear: NO ONE with a clear mind on the right would use that word, in Hollywood or NY or otherwise. Not because they’re afraid to, but because they have common sense and respect for our fellow human beings.

Something the left is lacking. Severely.

Check your spelling genius. Furthermore, you’re so brilliant, I guess it never occurred to you that my supervisor could refer to himself as a negro. Considering he grew up in Virginia in the 60s, it would not be unusual.

Andy in Agoura Hills on January 27, 2009 at 11:59 PM

Just for your benefit “Barack The Magic Negro” was just one of forty-one parodies on the CD. It was not the only parody. ONE OF FORTY ONE

And besides it is funny, makes fun of Al Sharpton, and the LA Times which initiated the phrase.

Dasher on January 28, 2009 at 12:35 AM

One other thing the CD was not made by Chip Saltsman. It is a commercial CD produced by Paul Shanklin.

Soon enough, ‘BLACK‘ will be unacceptable. Maybe ‘Off-white’? Wait, no, that’s Obama.

Ugly on January 27, 2009 at 8:54 PM

The acceptable term is anti-white !

i.e. opposed to white.

I thought Mike Wallice’s head was going to explode after hearing what Mr. Freeman had to say about Black History Month. You know he was wanting to hear about how it’s so f’d up that BHM is in February, 1) the shortest month of the year or 2) that it’s during the month when there are less school days because of “snow days” or some other drivel.

Lord I apologize, but the joke has to be made. If there was a Jewish History Month does anybody wonder if they would hold out for two months.

I know I shouldn’t have. No need to tell me.

ORrighty on January 28, 2009 at 1:40 AM

I could just picture Jackie Mason doing a riff on it.

Jackie: “We’ll take April and May.”

Other voice: “That’s two months, Jackie.”

Jackie: “What? That’s a problem?”

rmel80 on January 28, 2009 at 1:57 AM

Funny, I seem to recall that when those “SARAH PALIN IS A C*NT” T-shirts were the topic of conversation, Democrats wanted us to get the hell over it and man up about it.

But people are still going on about that stupid “Magic Negro” CD?????

Aitch748 on January 27, 2009 at 10:09 PM

Sure, and if Hilary or Obama were giving the shirts to friends and family at Christmas then they would be assholes like this jerk.

lexhamfox on January 28, 2009 at 2:28 AM

Actually you nitwits, we live in America! Any American can say anything he or she wants at any time about any thing as long as it does not cause harm to another person. It’s called FREEDOM of SPEECH! Stop with your stupid inane Political Correctness! It’s boring and dull!

sabbott on January 28, 2009 at 5:53 AM

Another case of ‘GOTCHA’ journalism that MSNBC does so well. Without ‘GOTCHA’ they have nothing.

Payback’s a bitch, Chip. You participated in the completely unfair Mormon/Satan smear of Romney. Karma dictates a worse crash and burn than this, so you’re getting off easy.

I say we not use Aces simplistic argument to support an argument against the parody. Ace basically said- a double standard exists, let’s get used to it. How about we not? The piece has significant social value. If someone is offended because they’re too slow to get the meaning of social commentary, then screw it- you’re never going to get dolts to understand complicated subjects with knee jerk reactions of “racism!”

Blacks don’t support Republicans for a few reasons. Much of it the media’s fault. Then you have the obvious fact backed by every poll on earth on the subject- black Americans tend to be socially conservative, but they also consistently poll that they wholeheartedly support welfare handouts, thinking the government teet will forever be there, solving their problems, when in fact it’s only making their problems worse.

I don’t want my candidates to kowtow to any subset of the population, just because some like to whine about nothing. The people that refuse to see the social commentary and get offended are usually the same people that will be offended by everything you say, and they will continue to live in ignorance praising democrats, though Bush appointed the first black sec of state, first black sec of education, first black natl security adviser, etc. The facts speak for themselves- conservative strategies have historically helped black Americans more than any liberal handout program has. The fact that most blacks are blind to that won’t change because candidates suck up to them.

I’m surprised he didn’t include some drunken Negro cookies in the package…jeez this is what the GOP has been reduced to.

So shameful.

Great, let’s harm the GOP some more, while screaming about the constitution.

This is the problem with him and many of you – you have no respect for the Party, or you just do not care.

Your stubborness will generate more and more negativity and the GOP will suffer irreparable damage.

AprilOrit on January 28, 2009 at 10:25 AM

haha I love it when white people tell black people what terms shouldn’t offend them, it’s always so effective!

Noneya on January 27, 2009 at 7:41 PM

Cry me a river, build me a bridge, and get over it.

Us white people get the same exact cr*p shoved down OUR throats, Sambo. Do “cracker” and “honky” ring a bell?

Take some responsibility for heavens sake and stop whining about the media and blaming large groups of people for our losses.

We lost and the reasons are obvious and blantant; Saltzman is a clear example of how not to act after all is said and done. Someone like him should never ever be the face of the Party, that is political suicide.

We lost because of us, because of that small minded electorate that has some how found it’s way into the GOP -we lost because of pigheaded individuals who believe that large groups of people whole-heartedly accept welfare, we lost because of that group with vile hatred of atheists and Mormons or of anyone who isn’t like them.

You cannot insult large parts of the population and expect to garner votes and actually win.

Low taxes, low government spending just don’t completely seal the deal – if the other things are glaringly sticking out like sore thumbs all over the face of the Party.

AprilOrit on January 28, 2009 at 10:43 AM

I love this country and Rush too
But i wouldnt have made that cd..
I am sorry its in horribly poor taste..

Your suppoesed to educate the liberal morons
why this country and its systems are great.

Not drive them to the insane liberals..

jcila on January 27, 2009 at 7:29 PM

White Americans are way to quick to pander to black Liberals. The whole point of the parody is to point out that the black liberal called BO a magic negro. Shankman didn’t do that, he was making fun of the phrase.

Saltsman was right that we need to appeal to all voters based on our principles but then he caves when the infobabe plays the race card. All of our Republican leaders need to learn to push back when liberals try and shame them with false accusations of racism.
