Read the Stimulus! Update: The No-Blago Clause

posted at 1:50 pm on January 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

My friend Rob Neppell at Truth Laid Bear and Kithbridge has literally made a career out of building on-line tools to break down barriers between people and organizations, and he’s done it once again with Read the Stimulus.  Rob has transformed the 1,588 pages of legislation and committee reports into a searchable website designed to shine a light on the Congressional porkfest.  What had once been an inaccessible and forbidding mountain as daunting as Everest now becomes accessible to those motivated to find the pork, waste, and outright fraud in them thar hills.

Let’s see what an Army of Davids can do.  Get your search fingers warmed up and see what ridiculous items you can find in this bloated attempt at nationalization.  Put the links and descriptions (I’ll need both) in the comments section, or e-mail them to me at stimulus-at-notonedimemore-dot-org so that we can start displaying them here at Hot Air.  John McCain said that he wanted to make people famous for their pork and political aggrandizement, and maybe we can still do that.

And we should thank Rob for his tireless work on behalf of Porkbusters and other sunshine efforts.  If you ever need a consultant for building an Internet presence, be sure to reach out to Kithbridge and support one of the good guys.

Update: We have our first winner, at least in terms of entertainment.  I wonder who inserted this clause into page 14.  Roland Burris?  (h/t: HA commenter Yo)

There are 56 words in the “Lords Prayer”. There are 272 words in the “Gettysburg Address”. There are 1,328 words in the “Declaration of Independence”, and, 4,400 words in the Constitution.

HMMM
Where would the economy be today if the 350 billion was given back to the people who paid the taxes?

355 Billion divided by the 100 million tax payers.

Home sales would have skyrockted.
Car sale would have gone through the roof.
All the while taxes would increase drasticly?

Where did it go? To the ones that contribute to the Freakin Dam O Craps.

Time for another Tea Party! Also tar and feathering.

*
Training for Primary Care Physicians and Nurses Recovery funding: $600 million A key component of attaining universal health care reform will be ensuring the supply of primary health care providers – family medicine, internal medicine, pediatricians, dentists, and nurses. Funding for health professions training for these disciplines has withered in the past decade. The $600 million provided will double annual funding for training primary care doctors and dentists, as well as double support for nursing programs such as nurse scholarships, nurse faculty loans, and advanced nursing. The increased funding will also increase the number of health care providers that can be supported through the National Health Service Corps program.

I find this kind of interesting. They’re appealing to the Rural Electrification Act of 1936 in funding their Broadband Internet For All initiative. Maybe FDR isn’t even dead?

The Rural Electrification Act is specifically “for the purpose of furnishing and improving electric and telephone service in rural areas”.

i have to go to work now

So far i havent found anything that will actually create more than a few thousand jobs..

why not just hand out the money and give everyone in america a few thousand dollars to pay off their credit card bills..

Oh yea thats because the irs is so screwed up they were unable to even send out the first stimulus payments without screwing the system

but i did get my 6 dollars (actually it hasnt been depoisited yet)

I wonder how much the government SPENT trying to
first figure out my taxes
sending out multiple mailings telling me they screwed up
and i still havent even seen the 6 dolars yet.

Oh yea i called them too
I told the nice gentleman who answered too tell his boss
if they cant run the irs network
if they cant figure out how to send out the checks
I would re-do their entire network

since obviously nothing works at the irs..

Pg 45:
Wildfire Hazard Reduction Recovery funding: $850 million
Recent experience suggests that for every dollar spent on advance hazard mitigation and fuel reduction, there will be at least one dollar saved in reduced, future emergency wildfire suppression costs.

The bill also provides $300 million for hazardous fuels reduction, forest health, wood to energy grants and rehabilitation and restoration activities on Federal lands.

This is hilarious. Now the govt realizes you actually have to aggressively manage forests.
Why don’t they just sell some timber rights & let private companies clean up the accumulating fuel in the forest?!

I think this is making it possible for us to get broadband out in the stix of SW ND. They are putting it through our property this summer.
I will probably be able to use it, considering we only have 2 choices for Interent out here:
Satellite & dial-up.
Satellite is about $55/month.
My brother-in-law has that & says it works fine.
Dial-up doesn’t work but about 20% of them time.
Our landlines are all scratchy & they basically suck. You can’t hardly make a land-line phone call anymore & hear the other guy.
I don’t need special treatment bcs I live out in the country.
If I wanted Internet, I could get a satellite.
What a waste.

cjs1943 on January 26, 2009 at 2:52 PM

Backwards.

Batteries are not necessarily batteries, the modern prototype electric cars don’t use lead/acid “car” batteries. They use LiIon (Lithium Ion) (in the case of the Tesla (http://www.teslamotors.com)) which are also in your cell phone.

In the event a crash cracks the case, it’s a chemical spill, but powder form rather than liquid, i.e. diesel. The danger isn’t acid, but destructive discharge of all that stored energy. Using Jaws of Life the wrong way on a Prius may turn a fire and rescue guy into a crispy critter….

As for why someone would want to own an electric car, well, Tesla is making a small fortune, and there are still Citicars on the road. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citicar) There are enough Green True Believers out there who don’t seem to get that electricity does NOT come from fairy dust…

That said, if I could get a fully electric car that’s as heavy, and loaded with safety features as my current Camry, I’d seriously look at it. For a daily drive, it’d be fine.
