On my desk: Inside Gitmo, Blacklisting Myself, A Slobbering Love Affair
posted at 11:30 am on January 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
In my line of work, I don’t get a chance to get much time to read books — but a few compelling titles have come my way in the last couple of weeks. I’m hoping to arrange interviews with all of the authors, but their books should get attention immediately.
That’s true most of all for the first book on my reading list, Inside Gitmo: The True Story Behind the Myths of Guantanamo Bay. Lt. Col. Gordon Cucullu (US Army, retired) undertook a personal investigation of the allegations of abuse and torture at the detention facility on Guantanamo Bay, and discovered that some were indeed true in the early days — but have long since been corrected. Cucullu takes readers inside of the prison to reveal one of the most humane maximum-security facilities run by the US anywhere. This looks like a must-read as we debate how to close Gitmo and move the detainees elsewhere, and whether that even needs to happen.
Anyone who knows Roger Simon knows that he tells great stories about his life in Hollywood before and after 9/11. After becoming what he calls a 9/11 Democrat, Roger discovered that the Hollywood power structure became hostile to its apostates. The former financier of the Black Panther Breakfast Program tells all in his new memoir, Blacklisting Myself: Memoir of a Hollywood Apostate in the Age of Terror, with plenty of interesting names included, such as Warren Beatty, Richard Dreyfuss, and Woody Allen, among others.
Speaking of juicy reads, no one delivers like Bernard Goldberg — and no one has as much insight into the mainstream media. His new book title, A Slobbering Love Affair: The True (And Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media, pretty much describes the thrust of Goldberg’s argument. Like all of his other books, Goldberg will provide a lively read and provoke a lot of debate over the sunlight he shines on media bias in the Age of Obama.
I’m looking forward to all of these reads. I just hope I can recall my Evelyn Wood training from 25 years ago to get through them.

When I first read your headline I though for a second that was the title of one book.

Wow, that sounds very interesting, I hope it’s got transcripts of interrogations of the prisoners.
Ed, another book ya gotta read is “Mission: Blacklist #1″ by SSgt Erik Maddox, the guy whose interrogations led to the capture of Saddam. It’s a mental chessmatch. A must-read for HotHeads!

I assume Murtha has already read the Gitmo book as he prepares for the new Super-Max in PA which will bear his name and forced unionization of all it’s employees through card check.

I wish Bill O. or some major player would get rights to slowly publish or at least discuss some sections of the books you listed. Bill O’Reilly dot com (which costs money) or his show would work since he has to waste time with crimes and other nonsense.
Otherwise, heartfelt thanks for mentioning Bernard Goldberg and the rest of these! Nice work to raise the level of the debate.

I wonder if DeathToMediaHacks will stop slobbering over Obama long enough to read some truth in Goldberg’s book?
Apparently, the MSM is not a hack to this tool.

CAN’T WAIT FOR BERNIE’S BOOK!!! The MIL is picking it up for me where she works.
That said, I believe O’Reilly will have Bernie on talking about the book tomorrow night.

Anyone play poker?
It is time to call on Gitmo. The Dems wanted the issue, but had no solution. The CIC signs an executive order, (while asking council ‘what am I signing here???’ ) which is meaningless – he can sign a new one in a year extending or negating the current order.
What to do with the bad guys? Gee – if we send some of them home they’ll loose their heads – and the Euro-Weenies don’t like that! If we turn them loose, some of them come back for another shot. That’s not nice.
They wanted the issue – now its theirs.

I’ve linked to Lt. Col. Gordon Cucullu’s articles on GITMO many times and was glad to see him on Glenn Beck’s show the other day. This book could not come at a better time!
Here is a link to all his articles for Front Page. Must reads are “What I saw at GITMO”, “Mothering Terrorists at GITMO”, and “Attack at GITMO”.

Must read: Stealth Jihad, by Robert Spencer.

Thanks for the suggestions…perhaps you could fill us in on the horrible things our military did to the the Gitmo boys in the beginning of their detainment–not the Abu Graib victims. I’ll be too busy reading The 5000 Year leap and Ann Coulter’s new book to read any of those.
I think that the cowardly idiots in the Obama administration watched Anchorman and decided to put them down here in San Diego, the SW corner of the country because, after all, the US military created these ‘militants’ with their policies, (and their very existence) and those stupid Marines deserve to be punished with the task of babysitting them.
BTW: I heard a clip about how they are “rehabilitating” the Gitmo boys with crayons, but they “can’t force them” to take out their frustrations by drawing pictures.

He is a great interview, Ed, .
Folks can go to Debra Burlingame’s sight and you can hear a clip of his interview.
You can also learn more, folks by going to the Col.’s companion site to the book .
I miss watching you shave on your show, Ed.

Ed-
I’d love to see “On My Desk” become a regular feature! Your book reviews have pointed me to some of the best books I’ve read in the past 2 years. My number 1 favorite is still “House to House” the story of the invasion of Fallujah.
DrewVT6 on January 26, 2009 at 1:19 PM
Too bad none of those books are available on Amazon Kindle. That’s how I buy almost all of my books now. It’s cheaper and easier.
I might have to make an exception in a couple of these instances, if the publishers don’t release them on Kindle.

Don’t you mean liberation of Fallujah?
