New Senator from New York pro-gun, anti-bailout — and anti-amnesty

posted at 9:31 pm on January 26, 2009 by Allahpundit

We knew about the first two but her border enforcement cred caught me off guard. You ready for this? Quote:

In Congress, Congresswoman Gillibrand has been a firm opponent of any proposal that would give amnesty to illegal aliens. The federal government must provide the necessary resources to secure our borders, which is critical for America’s economic and national security. She strongly supports legislation that would significantly increase the number of border patrol agents and place sophisticated technology along the Southern border to catch human and drug smugglers.

Congresswoman Gillibrand authored and passed an amendment that will prevent employers who have hired illegal aliens from receiving federal contracts.

In addition, Congresswoman Gillibrand believes English should be made the official language of the United States and she opposes providing non-emergency taxpayer benefits to illegal aliens. As a Member of the Agriculture Committee, she has advocated for a review of the current H-2A visa system, so that farmers will have access to legal workers when they cannot find Americans to fill their labor needs.

Pelosi and the rest of the New York congressional delegation evidently hate her, too. Dude, sign me up.

The bad news? She’s sure to get a serious challenge in the primary next year from the left, fueled by nutroots money and amnesty-shill rhetoric like this. Donate early and often. Exit question: Who could have guessed that KP would become only our second-favorite Democrat named Kirsten?

Update: Just to put this in perspective for you, on two of the three aforementioned issues, she’s to the right of Sarah Palin.

progressoverpeace on January 26, 2009 at 9:38 PM

exit questions — doesn’t she need to start campaigning for ’10 on day one? what does that potentially do to these positions?

Buckaroo on January 26, 2009 at 9:39 PM

But I thought Hillary liked her soooooo much. And if Hilary does like her, wouldn’t the Hildog campaign for her successor? And don’t New Yorkers love them some Clinton (I can’t understand why they would have elected one otherwise). So, if Hillary campaigns, shouldn’t that help shut up the nutroots?

How Many Blue Dog Democrats are serving in the Senate, and the House now? Because it is obvious the Republicans are in disarray okay I mean the Rinos. We are going to be leaning heavy on the blue dogs to keep the ship up right.

By the way, just to pile on the good news, Republicans are likely to carry her now-occupied seat. Her district has a Cook PVI rating of R+3. She was the first Dem since ’93 to hold the seat and her district voted for Bush by like 54% last time around. Even Kos posters are worried about holding it.

amerpundit on January 26, 2009 at 9:42 PM

Dude, sign me up.

Count me among her supporters too. I’ll even send her a check next year. I expect to have a significant savings on my tax bill this April, as I’m going to be using the Geithner Method to calculate my tax liability (meaning I’m not going to be paying any taxes I don’t like). If it’s good enough for our new Treasury Secretary, it’s good enough for me.

She obviously clings to guns.

Kinda sounds like she has antipathy to people that are not like her.

And she’s a Roman Catholic. What’s that about religion?

More….from Wikipedia,

Taxes

Gillibrand supports extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for middle class families. She opposes the No Child Left Behind Act, because she believes it “places an unmanageable strain on country and school budgets.” She supports doubling the Child and Dependent Care Credit, and eliminating or permanently fixing the Alternative Minimum Tax.

She also supports repeal of DOMA and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Can’t have everything.

Not too bad, though.

Being anti-bailout and anti-amnesty is much more important to me than anti-abortion (I’m really anti-Roe, since abortion has no place at the federal level). The abortion issue isn’t going to be cahnged much, and that’s for the SCOTUS to fix, anyway. The bailouts and amnesty could actually destroy us, by my thinking. The fact that she would be pro-Roe is a big problem, but in today’s world the bailout and amnesty questions are much more pressing, to me.

Like I said in another thread about her… if her convictions survive the Dingy Harry’s harpy nagging, she’s going to be a great ally for Republicans (the real ones) in the Senate.

But I don’t think she’s going to keep her convictions. I see her turning about face after meeting with Dingy Harry, and heading towards the left.

Sacre bleu! Porquoi??!!

Yeah, one of them has a voting record and one doesn’t. Gimme a break.

Gillibrand had to take those positions to hold onto her seat. Now that she represents the Peoples’ Republic of New York, it will be safe for her to align with Dingy Harry and get that 0% ACU voting record.

I like conservative Dems because it demonstrates that party isn’t totally insane. But keep in mind that most “conservative” Dems break with the socialist party leadership on one or two issues only, then vote party-line libbo. See well-known Virginia politicians Mark Warner and Rick Boucher. Hell, look at Liebs – he’s conservative on one issue only: defense. Otherwise he might as well be Zombie Howard Metzenbaum.

I hope Gillibrand stays to the right of the Dems and continues to make them mad, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

terryannonline on January 26, 2009 at 10:14 PM

From her website….

Our rural communities will be central to the development of clean, homegrown energy. The Farm Bill included the creation of the Rural Energy for America Program that provides grants and loan guarantees for farmers and small businesses to purchase and install renewable energy systems and to make energy efficiency improvements. The bill also includes expansion of energy feedstock development, such as grasses and woody biomass, which can be used for the production of clean, efficient cellulosic ethanol, and also inclusion of methane to energy production which is particularly beneficial to our dairy and livestock farmers.

Through investment in homegrown, clean and renewable energy we can slow, stop, and ultimately reverse the effects of global climate change, revitalize America’s economy and strengthen America’s national security.

Roe is a bad ruling not because of religious beliefs but becaus the ruling is based on a Constitutionally protected right to privacy. Which as anyone that has actually read the Constitution knows, the Costitution does not protect privacy.

Sometimes when I watch the Fred episodes of Law and Order I think they let him write his own lines and make his own political statements. Because there is no way a lib hollywood Liar writer could come up with half of what he said on that show.

I believe that we must maintain America’s ability to confront and undermine terrorism through intelligence gathering programs worldwide while preserving our Constitutional civil liberties here at home. The fact that she would be pro-Roe is a big problem, but in today’s world the bailout and amnesty questions are much more pressing, to me.

if you think for one minute she would ever vote with Cornyn or Inofe, you’re sorely confused. . .
