Quote of the day
posted at 10:00 pm on January 25, 2009 by Allahpundit
“‘I hope he fails.’
Do you ever say that about your president if you are an American who loves your country? Would you say it about George W. Bush, who was disastrous; about Bill Clinton, who was slimy; about Jimmy Carter, who was inept; about Richard Nixon, who was crooked? You may think he’s going to fail, yes. You may warn he’s going to fail, yes.
But do you ever hope he fails? Knowing his failure is the country’s failure? Isn’t that, well . . . disloyal?”

It’s the highest form of patriotism, isn’t it?
snickelfritz on January 25, 2009 at 10:01 PM
Weren’t the Michael Moore crowd saying that “dissent was the highest form of patriotism” when Bush was in charge? OK then. Rush and Conservatives don’t want liberal policies to be implemented because in the end that is “failure” for the country. So Obama must fail.
echosyst on January 25, 2009 at 10:03 PM
Says the angry left.
Spirit of 1776 on January 25, 2009 at 10:03 PM
To put in better context he said he would never want a socialist to succeed. I agree.
allrsn on January 25, 2009 at 10:03 PM
Lordy, AP, you’re starting to sound like Oberman.
Rush said, IF Obama’s goal is socialism, “I hope he fails.”
Geeze. Get a grip.
Labamigo on January 25, 2009 at 10:03 PM
His policies, his left wing, state welfare, state health care, his socialist collective policies – should fail and fail miserably.
If any of these policies get into law – we’ll never be able to reverse them.
Kini on January 25, 2009 at 10:04 PM
I happen to agree with Rush. If Obama is successful with his plans then the fatal flaw of Democracy will be realized and it is over.
Onager on January 25, 2009 at 10:04 PM
AP is confused, Obama’s failure to implement socialism is GOOD for America, not failure.

Only if it is a republican in office.. PLEASE get the rules right.

AP you are taking Rush out of context. I hope he fails too, fails to make us a socialist nation.
HotAirExpert on January 25, 2009 at 10:05 PM
Hilarious.
That is ridiculous, unless the President insists on riding the country down on his own failure. The hope is obviously that the President would re-set his goals for the country, rather than watch his own agenda bring the country down.
For those that consider Bush to have been disastrous- what if he would have failed at convincing the country to go to war with Iraq? That would have been (in the anti-Bush crowd) a Bush failure and a great national success, right?
MayBee on January 25, 2009 at 10:05 PM
Dissent is Patriotic.
I agree with Rush.
I hope obama fails to rebuild this nation as a socialist country.
I hope obama fails to institute massive spending programs.
I hope obama fails to establish insane climate change policies.
I hope obama fails to stop Israel from winning against palestine.
The list goes on.

Hillary screamed it into the microphones. It’s everybody’s right to oppose any administration. Now,, of course, I do remember Bill Clinton saying, during one is his state of the union addresses, that true patriots will support his plans. But,, Hillary said that just wasn’t the case. So, gosh,, what’s a true patriot to do??

echosyst on January 25, 2009 at 10:09 PM
This is not necessarily so and is a matter of perspective. For years, the Left proclaimed Bush a failure even while we had a growing economy and were winning the war.
Rush is saying he wants Obama to fail politically. He’s not saying he wants America to fail. If the gov’t would leave everyone alone and quit obstructing real progress, we’d probably be ok. The left is so clamoring for Obama to be a dictator that they’ve linked his success to the country’s inextricably.

It is a “manufactured controversy” by all, including AP, who continue to quote Rush out of context. But so what? Journalistic probity flew out the window long ago. The real question is: what does Sarah Palin think? Stir it up!
Scotsman on January 25, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Look for Limbaugh = traitor to be pushed. Big Hollywood links a Jon Stewart video that has the same theme. It’s like the quote Rush pulled from rules for radicals:
The MSM are all Obama sockpuppets.
zmdavid on January 25, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Rush also hopes that the guy whose name rhymes with Obama doesn’t succeed.
RBMN on January 25, 2009 at 10:12 PM
Have a question for some libs,,,
would it have been every German’s patriotic duty to support the policies of Adolf Hitler?? Would it have been wrong for any of the German people to have stated they hoped Hitler failed??
Was it wrong for our founders to oppose King George?
King George had plans for America, our founders certainly were hoping his plans would fail and their would succeed.
I’d like to ask to,, if Obama wants to change America,,
is he being unpatriotic to say America needs to change????
is it more patriotic to support your nation or to support a single president????
JellyToast on January 25, 2009 at 10:13 PM

This is how ‘The Quote of the Day’ works; Ed or AP use someone else’s words (quote) and post it for our enjoyment, if we haven’t read them earlier.
thomasaur on January 25, 2009 at 10:13 PM
Why are some under the impression that AP agrees with the quote he linked here?
zmdavid on January 25, 2009 at 10:14 PM
yeah, true liberal patriots hope the president succeeds and the troops fail.
AdrianG on January 25, 2009 at 10:15 PM
What happens if he fails? If you think it will all be ok and think the Republicans will somehow swoop in and save the day then you’re in for a rude awakening. We’re past “failure” just being a deep recession or a slower than normal recovery. “failure” at this point means what’s going down in Iceland.
popularpeoplesfront on January 25, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Obama needs to get his priorities in order. Terrorism – high, economy – high, Rush Limbaugh – low.

mikeyboss on January 25, 2009 at 10:16 PM
The true patriotism, the only rational patriotism, is loyalty to the Nation ALL the time, loyalty to the Government ONLY when it deserves it.
- Mark Twain
My kind of loyalty was to one’s country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to. Institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death.

Out of context…but that doesn’t matter when the shills have unleashed their dogs. Get the meme out, often, and people will believe that long before they even consider looking for the full interview, or the precise quote. Remember those wonderful videos of Obama voters being asked about various politicians on Election Day? Yes, the majority are that stupid. So, this Alinsky-structured counterattack on Rush is going to find legs…already has, to hear some of the pundits talking today, all based on part of a quote, taken out of context, that fits their preconceived notions about Rush, the Right and us bitter clingers.
coldwarrior on January 25, 2009 at 10:16 PM
AP has lost it!!!! I guess not only the drive-by’s take Rush out of context.
AP: Here is a question?
Was it unpatriotic for some Germans to hope Hitler failed?
ex. White Rose group, or German Jews on the trains heading for the gas chambers. I guess those German Jews were just unpatriotic!
aigle on January 25, 2009 at 10:16 PM
Obama might want to ask Reid on taking on Rush with a manufactured controversy over a misquote.
jukin on January 25, 2009 at 10:17 PM
So, let’s see what the idiots are hoping succeeds (just one of many, many similar examples):
For us to “break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers”.
Anyone who wants that program to succeed are traitors and idiots, like their idiot messiah. Or maybe they just want the idiot messiah to succeed at “bankrupt[ing] the coal industry” and killing us that way?
Rush is 100% correct.
progressoverpeace on January 25, 2009 at 10:19 PM
This is all a set-up to clamp down on talk radio. “We cannot have these treasonous hate-mongers polluting our aiwaves!” All the synchronized indignation over “I hope he fails” is just too pat to be coincidental.
ddrintn on January 25, 2009 at 10:19 PM
We teach them to take their patriotism at second-hand; to shout with the largest crowd without examining into the right or wrong of the matter, exactly as boys under monarchies are taught and have always been taught. We teach them to regard as traitors, and hold in aversion and contempt, such as do not shout with the crowd, and so here in our democracy we are cheering a thing which of all things is most foreign to it and out of place, the delivery of our political conscience into somebody else’s keeping. This is patriotism on the Russian plan.

I have to say, that was a surprisingly poorly written article, I mean seriously bad. I haven’t had time to go through all the comments, but I’ll make this point that may or may not have already been made: The article is presenting a straw man. Everyone who wishes Obama will fail is NOT wishing America fails, they are wishing Obama’s plans that are bad for America fail, but by the same token if he can do things (contrary to the plans he has already told of) that improve the country, then that is good.

There are ellipses elsewhere, but not in the quote from Rush.
Perhaps I chose the wrong word when I said ellipses. Rush has been deliberately taken out of context to make it seem that Rush doesn’t care if the country goes down the tubes.
Rush makes it clear that by hoping O fails, he is speaking of his policies.

Obama’s vision for America is one of social justice framed in wealth transfer and redistribution and a consolidation of State central planning in all sectors.
I, too, hope that Obama’s policies fail. They are not rooted in the interest of America but in Obama’s audacity of control of America.
I want Obama, Greg Craig, Rahm Emanuel, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, most of the Obama cabinet and all of the rest of the power-mad members of the Democrats to fail miserably in instituting their plans for our country. Oh please. You might not agree with Obama on the issues (I know I don’t) but he doesn’t want to destroy the United States. Look just because our side didn’t win, it doesn’t mean it is the end of the world. Guess what the libs hated Bush and they were saying when he won in 2004 “It was the end of America” and he was going to invade Iran…etc… and guess what America survived. Also after all the whining by liberals for eight years about how bad Bush was they are now content with a guy who has even kept some of Bush’s cabinet. So much for it being the end of civilization.
