Blago subpoenas include Obama aides

posted at 2:18 pm on January 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

It appears that Barack Obama won’t escape the Rod Blagojevich scandal as easily as first thought.  Two senior aides to Obama have been served with federal subpoenas, calling into question how closely the Obama transition team may have been tied to Blagojevich’s attempts to sell Obama’s vacated Senate seat:

Sweeping federal subpoenas of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s administration include requests for records involving David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett, senior advisers to President Barack Obama.

Among 43 subpoenas released by the Blagojevich administration Friday, one from Dec. 8 seeks notes, calendars, correspondence and any other data that relate to Axelrod, Jarrett and 32 other people and organizations.

That was the day before the FBI arrested Blagojevich, a two-term Democrat, on charges that he tried to trade his appointment to replace Obama in the Senate for campaign contributions. Wiretapped conversations show Blagojevich thought Jarrett was interested in the seat and he wanted campaign money or a high-paying job in return, according to a sworn statement.

Obama’s staff released a report in December that said his staff had no inappropriate contact with the governor’s office about the Senate seat, nor was anyone aware of any dealmaking. Axelrod, a Chicago political strategist now in the White House, was not mentioned in the report.

Blago-Rahma followers will recall that the Obama transition team reportedly wanted Jarrett to get the seat.  If they pushed Jarrett, two people would have been most likely to act go-between.  Rahm Emanuel was the early favorite for that job, but David Axelrod would have been better placed to work between all of the different factions.

Of course, this new revelation opens a new question.  Why did the internal report from the Obama team not mention Axelrod when they cleared themselves of all complicity in the scandal?   It seems like a strange oversight in retrospect.  Perhaps the feds thought the same thing.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Feds may/may not be looking for evidence related to the Senate seat scandal.

The Dec 9th arrest was a side-result of an investigation which started 3 years ago.

Axelrod is knee deep in IL politics; working on a few Daley campaigns (Obama worked for Blago’s campaign in ’02, and was nice enough to endorse Mr. Whack-job in ’06).

The Senate seat issue may be the last thing Team Obama has to worry about.

And of course thinking of Blago and his Pearl Harbor comments reminds me why I really cannot stand Michael Bay.

On the local front, it just keeps getting better. Blago decided to go on offense this week, doing interviews live on some radio shows, including WLS’s Don and Roma.

In that remarkable event, he declared that the impeachment action – and therefore presumably the Fitz criminal complaint and arrest – was merely a political maneuver by his opponents, who want to raise taxes. He won’t, so their only option was to gin up bogus charges in some kangaroo court.

His defense attorneys quit.

I don’t know. Maybe this circus and Obama’s attempts to marginalize Rush are attempts to take the spotlight off the “stimulus” package. Still, if the inquiry bloodies up Jarrett, fine. I’d really love to see it damage Axelrod because I find it scary that that POS has such extraordinary access over Obama. He’s a 21st century Rasputin as far as I’m concerned.

Whatever the case, if I’m the GOP members of Congress, I’d be asking how Obama can ask for such a large check payable to “Cash” for nothing more than trial balloons.

In the past year, we’ve observed Spitzer, Edwards, Wright, Phleger, Ayers, ACORN, illegal campaign contributions from foreigners, the Jacksons (father and son), Blago, Illinois-Chicago politics, Patterson-Kennedy, Geithner, Holder, closing Gitmo without a plan to placate the hard left, reinstating funding for overseas abortions to placate the hard left. And that’s just scratching the surface. I feel as if I’m watching a Marx Brothers movie.

Act like adults, GOP. Someone has to because Obama, his administration, and his supporters won’t.

Why did the internal report from the Obama team not mention Axelrod when they cleared themselves of all complicity in the scandal? It seems like a strange oversight in retrospect.

The Huffington Post claims this is the full text of the report:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/23/obama-report-on-blagojevi_n_153185.html

Finding this supposedly full text of the report on the Internet required all of two minutes. Now the way is open to anyone to click the link and see for himself whether the report mentions David Axelrod.

It’s a good practice to check what Ed writes, both for accurate reporting of simple circumstances and for reasonable interpretations. I’m starting a file with this comment, and I’m considering whether it’s worth my time to begin e-mailing a copy of my comments such as this one to Michelle Malkin for her review.

Kralizec on January 26, 2009 at 1:46 AM

David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett, two other individuals on the transition staff, did not have any contacts with the Governor or his office but are included in the report to address questions raised by the press

The ‘self assessment’ that obama did was and is a joke. He wasn’t even in office yet and we are getting the lawyeristic parsing worthy of Bill Clinton.. (I did NOT have sexual relations with THAT WOMAN, Miss Lewinsky wag wag way… Oh, let’s argue about the definition of is.. Oh, yeah, she gave me BJs where I stained her dress and the Great Seal of the US.. but that wasn’t sexual relations.. Oh, the cigar thing with a girl a year younger than my daughter.. that wasn’t sexual relations.. and dang, that really adds to the enjoyment of that cigar later)..

With Obama, it’s like they used to say in those old westerns “Him speak with forked toungue”

This should be interesting.. Blago is a true wild card or loose canon. A lot will depend on which judge gets to sit on his trial if it gets to that. That could neuter him. However, the impeachment, I think, will be more of a wild card
