AOL Hot Seat Poll: Gitmo closing

posted at 3:45 pm on January 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I’ve been under the weather this weekend, but I’ve managed to pick myself up long enough to write a new AOL Hot Seat poll. The fun for this one will be to see how one-sided this yes/no poll will get. In this case, the correct answer is so obvious that one would have to be the most Hopeandchangey zombie to miss it.

Enjoy, and consider this an open thread for Sunday.

Look at the Poll Question after the one you posted.

“Should Bush be left alone now?”

Interesting results there too.

bucsox79 on January 25, 2009 at 3:57 PM

More people think Bush should be left alone than think Obama should reconsider closing Gitmo.

I’m guessing some of those people think Bush should be left alone at Gitmo.

Disturb the Universe on January 25, 2009 at 3:59 PM

I think after we spent multi millions building facilities at Gitmo, do we need to close the facility just to make a point? The complaints about Gitmo were on how it was initially run under Gen. Sanchez, not its location. Since Sanchez is no longer there (and has not been there for years)–why move them (especially since it would be a potential problem and certainly costly bringing them to the mainland).

Mr. Joe on January 25, 2009 at 4:02 PM

I disagreed with Cheney, Rumsfeld and Sanchez on some of the things that were done early in the war on terror as it pertained to detainees, but the issue now is policy in dealing with detainees going forward not real estate.

I know Fat John Murtha wants a welcome center in Western Pennsylvania for al Qaeda (but not for the Marines) but Fat John Murtha can go stuff himself.

Unfortunately, we have reached a stage where symbolic gestures count for more than concrete reality, which is why we elected a president with little experience spouting vague promises just because he would represent how far our country has moved away from racism.

What happened at Gitmo that was so bad? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

john1schn on January 25, 2009 at 4:09 PM

I have the perfect solution. The prisoners, in all likelihood, will just be moved to some other base, so pick a base that is about to be closed, we’ll call it Camp Nevermore, rename Camp Nevermore to Gitmo, rename Gitmo to Camp Nevermore, then close Gitmo. Everyone should be satisfied except the moving companies.

MB4 on January 25, 2009 at 4:09 PM

Re: the Leave President Bush alone poll — Just about all states are up in the high “yes” percentages. Pretty close in The Peoples Republic of Washington, D.C., however.

Maybe now, after several years of dancing around the tiger, maybe the rationale for establishing Camps X-Ray, Delta, and a few others at Gitmo can be not only explained in simple terms to the lemmings, but also it is time to hit hard the fact that we are at war with these people, and traditionally, captees are kept until cessation of hostilities. Releasing them, here in the U.S., or abroad, is no guarantee at all that they will take up arms once again to complete their craven jihad.

Part of me has a suspicion that Obama signed the Exec Order to cover his butt. In a year, when all the legalities and the threat has been parsed out to the extreme, Obama can say “Gee, I tried. But, the fact of the matter is that we have no other viable alternatives.” And the Left will praise him for his wisdom and insight.

coldwarrior on January 25, 2009 at 4:09 PM

It will be ironic if the detainees end up in our prisons and recognize how much they were cottled back at Gitmo.

They should move the terrorists to an Indian Reservation.

Complete non-sequitur. If anything, the fact that only a few have gone over to al-Qaeda is an argument in favor of keeping it open.

Re: Gitmo. Relocation is simple.

I think it would be more telling if, in the dead of night, the guards, staff, et.al. just silently left. And left the gates open.

The inmates could just walk out. Where would they go? To the rest of the base. Nope, they could be shot as escapees. So, they could go onto Cuban soil, or they could try the swim to the US.

How would the Cubans welcome them?

How would they taste to the sharks?

For those that are any risk whatever, squeeze as much info out as possible, and then shoot them. Why on earth release them???

True, there are others where they are no risk to us, but the home country (China for example) has issues with them. In that case hand them over to the EU. Let them deal with either “violating human rights” or pissing off some other power.

To Combat Obama, Al-Qaeda Hurls Insults
Effort Hints at Group’s Consternation

By Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, January 25, 2009; A01

Soon after the November election, al-Qaeda’s No. 2 leader took stock of America’s new president-elect and dismissed him with an insulting epithet. “A house Negro,” Ayman al-Zawahiri said.

That was just a warm-up. In the weeks since, the terrorist group has unleashed a stream of verbal tirades against Barack Obama, each more venomous than the last. Obama has been called a “hypocrite,” a “killer” of innocents, an “enemy of Muslims.” He was even blamed for the Israeli military assault on Gaza, which began and ended before he took office.

“He kills your brothers and sisters in Gaza mercilessly and without affection,” an al-Qaeda spokesman declared in a grainy Internet video this month.

The torrent of hateful words is part of what terrorism experts now believe is a deliberate, even desperate, propaganda campaign against a president who appears to have gotten under al-Qaeda’s skin. The departure of George W. Bush deprived al-Qaeda of a polarizing American leader who reliably drove recruits and donations to the terrorist group.

Obama had better wise up. Al-Qaeda doesn’t seem to like him any more than Bush.

That is the million dollar question. How will closing Gitmo and moving the prisoners to US soil protect us?

Answer: It won’t. Plain and simple. Oh, other nations will applaud our civility and our caring, but in the end, these terrorist scum will try to attack again. And again. Better for them that we just kill them before we close the facility. Either that or fly them to Saudi Arabia, and while over the Atlantic, throw them all out of the plane without the comfort of a parachute. Let’s see Allah be so eff*ing Akbar then.

Here would be a good idea:
Send some of them to Israel under the close watch of their government.

Offer them the ability to start a new life. This would allow some of them to be able to prove how uninvolved they were, and that Israel gets indisputable proof that they aren’t about one particular culture only. On top of that, they would be given something that would make them unable to return to terrorism.

sethstorm on January 25, 2009 at 5:00 PM

Say, Obama’s not living in his Hyde Park resident for four years. And with Ayers living in the neighborhood, the detainees would have someone nearby who understands their plight.

Somebody call the movers and let’s get this move done.

BuckeyeSam on January 25, 2009 at 5:06 PM

All the previous posters are spot on. It is a tremendous waste of money to close this camp now just to satisfy some neroots and other terrorists who are using our media propaganda against our best interests.

Forget not that the other big winners in closing Gitmo are the owners of the democrat party, that being the lawyers and the government unions. The lawyers will have a field day tying up the courts with habeus corpus and inumerable appeals. The unions will like it because the guards will have to be unionized civil servents ; at least 30 to each detainee.

Why would you deny the Indians a chance to build a prison and hold the terrorists? They could use Obama’s infrastructure money.

They could get migrants workers to build the prison and then employ hundreds of Indians to staff the prison…

The legal battles would last for years and years and we would not have 62 terrorists returning to plot against America.

There are under 300 terrorists at Gitmo. The prison would be small… ;)

Anyone remember September 12, 2001…………..?

………. yeah, the day after?

I don’t know about you, but I was pretty pissed off and wanted some major payback…….

So what did we (American public) ask of our elected officials and military…………..?

To go find those responsible, wipe them off the face of the Earth………

………… and make sure it NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN!!!

Good thing that President George W. Bush was in the White House, he started taking the fight to these animals……

Yes, animals that did not wear uniforms, use women and children as shields, hide weapons in schools, and believe all glory to Allah if they strap on a bomb and take out as many with them as possible………. even babies.

How do you fight something like that?

Has any of you ever thought about that before?

These animals could be standing right next to you, and you wouldn’t realize they were a terrorist until your head was being sawed off by a rusty blade………

So when we did catch a few from the thousands we have killed, we needed to interrogate them to find out about their networks, means of communications, training camps, financing, and most of all their belief system that motivated their actions so the United States of America could defend herself……….

……. and what did we get in return?

Politics and politicians…. that’s what.

Remember back before the 2004 election………..

…….. John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, even Ted Kennedy for Christ sake, were all on board with the “War on Terror”…………. until Howard Dean won an initial primary using MoveOn.org and Internet cash.

Overnight, the Democratic party latched onto the Left and it’s defeatist policies, and the Media went right along with them……..

Every day, it was pounded into the skulls of the American people how many soldiers were killed, speeches were given that were used as recruiting tools by our enemies, methods of gathering intelligence on the enemy were printed weekly in the NYTimes, Bush all of a sudden “lied”, TIME and NewsWeek joined in, Hollywood jumped in, and now we were “Torturing” “enemy combatants” at Gitmo……….

In order to gain back POLITICAL power, the Democrats and the Main Stream Media totally changed the conversation and started a propaganda war against the American people that left Al Qaeda in awe……

Four years later, after the political win for the Democrats, Mr. Obama is going to close Gitmo even after we have proof that some of those who have been released have returned to the battlefield……….

……. and the interrogation techniques that have kept us safe, will no longer be available.

There was never any “Torture” going on at Gitmo, just highly effective, thoroughly studied, and professional ways of interrogation and intelligence gathering.

Ever realized you were just conned…………… Ever been sold a bill of goods that wasn’t……….. Ever gotten “Punked”……………?

………….. well, you just have.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday shrugged off Republican suggestions that the federal government reopen Alcatraz prison in her San Francisco district to house detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

President Obama this week signed an executive order calling for the closure of the prison at Guantanamo within the year. Republican Rep. Bill Young then suggested to White House counsel Greg Craig that the prisoners who could not be released back to their home countries or sent to a third country be put up in “the Rock,” the famous military installation and prison that closed down in 1963 and is now part of the National Park Service.

Asked whether that was a serious proposal, Pelosi said, “It is — no.”

“Perhaps he’s not visited Alcatraz,” Pelosi said of Young while displaying little sense of humor. “Alcatraz is a tourist attraction. It’s a prison that is now sort of like a — it’s a national park.”

More from headlines

Vice President Biden, speaking on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” said the prison must be closed because the symbolism of Guantanamo around the world has resulted in the growth of terrorist organizations, not their reduction.

“There’s no question it has to be closed. And we don’t think it’s inconsistent to deal with our national security and our Constitution. … That’s why we have the White House counsel — Mr. Craig is now going through this meticulously, deciding what we’re going to do with each and every prisoner,” he said.

Biden added that if the detainees went through the civilian court system and were somehow released, they still would not be sent out into the United States because all but one is an American citizen

“If they are not a U.S. citizen or if they are not here legally, then, even if they were released by a federal judge, they would not be able to stay here in the United States. They would be sent back to their country of origin. They would not stay here,” Biden said.

“They have no legal status to stay here, I don’t anticipate that happening. What I anticipate happening is that those people who are in a situation where it is either the evidence is in question or it’s going to be hard to make a case, we will most likely be rendering them back to their countries of origin or another country,” he continued, adding that some countries have already agreed to establish prison facilities for the detainees.

Liberal logic at its best.

Where’s the “Hell Yes!” button?

In reality, this poll is somewhat more meaningless than your ordinary internet polling. An Executive Order is not an imperial decree. Obama can’t pull off what he has ordered into law. Even without the presence of known terrorists, it would take a good deal of time to shut down the facility and then there is a problem what Obama plans to do with our enemies held there- unless the idea is to open the gates into Cuba and let them go free.

Exit question: What does the filthy bastard intend to do with GITMO now that he doesn’t want to hold enemies there? It has no military value, Fidel is on his deathbed, do you suppose that Obama is going to simply hand it back over to Cuba and end our presence there?

Escorts? No, but they could be “observers”.

Each shackled to a jihadi for security purposes, of course,

Daughter of the new CIA Director is an anti-American radical

Linda Panetta the daughter of Leon Panetta, who was recently named by Barack Obama to be the new CIA director. Linda is a supporter of all the anti-American regimes in this Hemisphere. Here she is with Hugo Chavez and Daniel Ortega, two sworn enemies of the United States .
She is a radical anti-American activist who wants to close the School of the Americas, considers that American soldiers are criminals and is against any aid to the government of Colombia , our main ally in the region.

I wonder if any of her activities will come up during her father’s confirmation hearings.

See some of her websites:

The evidence is a mess and just another consequence of the w disaster:

John Cole says:

“Here is what I don’t understand: Why is this repeatedly framed as a problem for Obama, when this really is evidence that the Bush administration accomplished NOTHING with Guantanamo? This is not a problem for Obama. This is proof that the last administration was a group of incompetent hacks. Bush decided that he had the right to detain people forever, do whatever he wanted to them, and they had no rights whatsoever, he ruined our international reputation and most likely violated dozens of laws, yet he let these allegedly dangerous people go. Why? What was the purpose of Gitmo, anyway? Why do all this stuff and STILL let the dangerous guys go free?”

Check out the state polls. In Illinois, over 70% answered ‘yes.’

Biden says that “other coutries” are willing to take the GITMO terrorists.

“”If they are not a U.S. citizen or if they are not here legally, then, even if they were released by a federal judge, they would not be able to stay here in the United States. They would be sent back to their country of origin. They would not stay here,” Biden said.

“They have no legal status to stay here, I don’t anticipate that happening. What I anticipate happening is that those people who are in a situation where it is either the evidence is in question or it’s going to be hard to make a case, we will most likely be rendering them back to their countries of origin or another country,” he continued, adding that some countries have already agreed to establish prison facilities for the detainees.”

I find that VERY interesting. WHAT COUNTRIES is he talking about?
Has the “gaffemaster” struck again?

Nelsa on January 25, 2009 at 7:00 PM

I doubt they would be in the general population.

Disturb the Universe on January 25, 2009 at 6:31 PM

More probable that they’d be housed on a military base somewhere. If they were in a general population in a maximum security prison in the US, I’d have a big concern that they’d prosletyze and begin to recruit Americans for jihad (similar to the home grown terrorists in the UK).

Red State State of Mind on January 25, 2009 at 7:06 PM

Spread’em around. Send some to be housed at Nasty Nan’s field office in San Francisco, some to Johnstown PA, some to Chicago (as if they need more terrorists) and a few to the Kennedy and Kerry compounds near Boston.

JonRoss on January 25, 2009 at 7:06 PM

A minimum security in Dover perhaps ?

JonRoss on January 25, 2009 at 7:24 PM

They need to keep Gitmo open. If not, then let them loose in Cuba. Castro would love that.

sheebe on January 25, 2009 at 7:27 PM

I just watched A Few Good Men the other night. Most American voters are stupid enough that their entire opinion on Gitmo was formed from this movie.

chunderroad on January 25, 2009 at 7:29 PM

Move them to First Street, N.E.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on January 25, 2009 at 7:34 PM

Don’t close Gitmo.

Gitmo has use as a training site for US Navy warships. It’s close to deep water, and it’s isolated nature aids in bonding a ship’s crew. It is also a great listening site for Elint on Cuba and Venezuela. It has current value, and we pay the lease payment every year. ISTR that Castro’s government does not cash the check given them. Plus, both parties have to dissolve the lease to give it back.

Huh ?

But I suppose it is conceivable that the Messiah and his Congressional lackeys (or is it the Congress and its Presidential lackey )might give the base back to Cuba as a sign of goodwill to the Butcher of Havana.

JonRoss on January 25, 2009 at 7:56 PM

NaCly dog on January 25, 2009 at 7:44 PM

I’m pretty sure that when they talk about closing GitMo, they are just talking about the Prison on it… not giving the base back to Cuba…

At least I hope so.

But most are missing the primary reason we used GitMo for a prison in the first place… It was NOT on US soil, and so we could keep Prisoners there without US Civilian Court Intervention… Supremes messed that up.

Now? Looks like all POWs will be given full US Civil Rights, which means Soldiers are now in the Law Enforcment business. They will have to take depsositions, and evidence, on the battlefield, instead of concentrating on fighting…

Reallllyyy glad I am retired… as between this, getting rid of Don’t Ask Don’t tell, and having an openly Gay Sec of the Navy… I’d be done… these are all distractions from War Fighting… and WILL get people killed.

Prediction time. Only way Military retention rates will stay high, is if there is really high unemployment rates. Otherwise, we are back to a Carter Military (and that sucks… I know, I was there…).

My short comment on Gitmo’s military value was in response to

It has no military value, Fidel is on his deathbed, do you suppose that Obama is going to simply hand it back over to Cuba and end our presence there?

getalife on January 25, 2009 at 6:49 PM

Uh, John Cole lost his mind quite some time ago…
That being said, Gitmo has served the purpose it was designed for: to take enemy combatants trying to kill us off of the battlefield.
That it is necessary and worked is proven by the fact that over 60 Gitmo detainees who were released early to their home countries have rejoined the jihad and are/were back fighting us.
You and John Cole are being deliberately obtuse!
And I don’t want these killers on American soil receiving American justice and civil liberties that they don’t deserve, plus the expense and security threat to us moving them here would entail.
In addition, there’s the threat they might go free and be at large in our country to wreak mayhem and murder.

We could send them to Texas and Wyoming.
