Obama: Um, I know some of you are skeptical about spending a trillion dollars

posted at 12:54 pm on January 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

Emphasis on “some.” Polls consistently show that more people support the stimulus than oppose it even when the price tag is attached, from 45 percent by Rasmussen’s measure to 53 percent from Gallup to even greater majorities per McClatchy and CNN. Expect stories like this plus The One’s own insistence on accountability, starting with the new Recovery.gov website, to push those numbers even higher.

Anything missing here, though? Any crucial pieces of information politely omitted lest they jeopardize the bill — besides, I mean, the fact that it’s brimming with pork and that it’s viewed by at least some prominent Obama advisors as a crude vehicle for redistribution? Why, there’s nary a word about TARP II or the fact that the recipients of TARP I already have lobbyists in place to make sure they get theirs when it inevitably passes. According to Rasmussen, 59 percent already say they’re worried about too much spending; imagine what it’ll be after The One finally gets around to telling us he wants another multi-billion-dollar bank bailout — after the stimulus has been safely signed into law, of course.

Rasmussen:

Forty-nine percent (49%) of voters say that the President is more liberal than they are. Fifty-nine percent (59%) worry that Congress and the President will increase government spending too much while only 17% have the opposite concern and are more worried that the politicians will cut taxes too much.

Seventy-one percent (71%) say the suspects should not be given the rights U.S. citizens have in court, while only 18% think they should, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national survey.

While some politicians, foreign officials and non-government groups like Amnesty International argue that the Bush administration is acting outside of the law in its treatment of these terrorist suspects, just 30% of Americans believe they should have access to U.S. courts, as opposed to 54% who favor the special military trials.

Nearly six out of 10 Americans (59%) also say the special prison camp for terrorists at Guantanamo, where the United States now detains 280 inmates, should not be closed. Twenty-six percent (26%) believe it should be.

Of course people support it. People are in a panic right now. They’ll gravitate to what the experts say is the way to recovery. And right now, the only plan on the table is the $1 trillion stimulus package. People are concerned about the cost, but figure hey, the GOP spent $700 billion plus an extra $500 billion bailing out AIG and banks and so forth. There is no credible alternative plan. That has to be the GOP’s job. I hope our friends at AEI, Heritage, and Cato are working overtime to come up with something.

Isn’t that anathema to everything the Democrats always say about the “rich” not paying their fair share or tax cuts only benefiting the wealthy? And how are we rewarding hard work and responsibility by bailing out failing businesses and industries?

And he yet again says he’ll “save or create” millions of new jobs. We know what the means. This bill will be a monumental failure in terms of job creation, but he’ll claim that things would’ve been worse had it not been passed.

Obama’s failure to force House Dems to trim this of pork is a problem. I am not sure why funding for contraceptives can’t be part of a comperehensive health/education package. But stimulus? Why are they acting as if this is the only law they’ll be able to sign this session.

Ironic. The MSM isn’t going to hold the Obama administration and Congress accountable by keeping the U.S. public informed of the facts. So the Obama administration has put up a website so that the U.S. public can be “informed” and hold them accountable. Why am I not comforted? I’m sure it would be racist to question the validity of any “facts” the Obama administration posts about it’s self.

This would be a funny if it was happening in a different country.

Hog Wild on January 24, 2009 at 1:30 PM

Strike one GOP anti stimulus talking point. That report from the CBO which said the stimulus would be spent in the next election cycle. Total Balogna.

Reports of a recent study by the Congressional Budget Office, showing that the vast majority of the money in the stimulus package won’t be spent until after 2010, have Democrats on the defensive and the GOP calling for a pullback in wasteful spending.

Funny thing is, there is no such report.

“We did not issue any report, any analysis or any study,” a CBO aide told the Huffington Post.

Rather, the nonpartisan CBO ran a small portion of an earlier version of the stimulus plan through a computer program that uses a standard formula to determine a score — how quickly money will be spent. The score only dealt with the part of the stimulus headed for the Appropriations Committee and left out the parts bound for the Ways and Means or Energy and Commerce Committee.

Because it dealt with just a part of the stimulus, it estimated the spending rate for only about $300 billion of the $825 billion plan. Significant changes have been made to the part of the bill the CBO looked at.

The CBO numbers were given to a small number of congressional Democrats and Republicans, but were not posted online because they’re not an official CBO product. (Media outlets, while reporting widely about the “report,” have declined to post it online. Here’s the whole thing.) Democratic aides say they are certain that the GOP leaked it to the Associated Press in order to undercut the spending portion of the stimulus.

only 17% have the opposite concern and are more worried that the politicians will cut taxes too much.

Who are these whackjobs who are worried about taxes being cut too much??

The rest of these numbers don’t surprise me I suppose. They are right in line with whatever propaganda is being fed to the masses by the MSM on any given polling day. The Fourth Estate has all the power b/c they can’t be held accountable.

And of course more people favor the boondoggle than oppose it. I would guess a sizable majority of the people being polled on the matter are themselves up to their eyeballs in credit card, mortgage and car debt. Why should they blink an eye at the government doing the same?

The One’s basic lack of understanding as to how economics actually works is really astounding. It would seem like common sense to me that if you want to “reward hard work and responsibility” that you would get out of the way of those enterprising individuals who are in a position to create jobs where other people can work hard, and who are responsible enough NOT to get themselves into hock in a house they can’t possibly afford. Instead, he seeks to prolong the housing crisis by propping up bad loans and keeping home prices artificially inflated with unrealistically low interest rates. The net effect of this is that those of us who pay our mortgages on time or have a home that’s paid for will have to sit on our investments that much longer before we’re able to sell them and at least break even. He also seeks to remove incentives for entrepreneurs to start new businesses by saddling them with more and more needless regulation and burdening them with higher income and payroll taxes. To anyone who has ever worked for themselves, I don’t have to tell you what an immense sacrifice the latter is, esp. knowing that the money likely won’t be there 20 years from now. I grit my teeth every time I have to write that check shelling out my 15%. And note to The One: I’m far from “wealthy.”

I doubt a street or mall demonstration will be nearly as effective as work stoppges and tax filing techniques. It will send a powerful message if done as a well publicized large movement, not just a small faction, but it has to get off dead center to start.

Well, 40% of the country pays no income tax, so that accountrs for 80% of the people who support the Depression Stimulus package.

Maybe the others don’t know that $1 Trillion will put them in hock for the amount of 1 years taxes.

So if you paid $25,000 last year, the Depression Stimulus will put you debt another $25,000 (in addition to what the income tax you pay for 2008).

SB 222 (submitted by one of the Wonder Twins Russ Foolsgood)

Community Revitalization Energy Conservation Act

To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to increase the national limitation on qualified energy conservation bonds and to clarify that certain programs constitute a qualified conservation purpose, and for other purposes.

FINDINGS

(3) Energy inefficiencies account for at least 50 percent of all United States energy use.

(4) United States electricity use could be reduced by 70 percent through efficiency gains alone.

(5) Estimates indicate that although the average United States household’s energy costs are equal to seven percent of household income, low-income households spend 17 percent of household earnings on energy.

(6) The rehabilitation, retrofitting, and construction of residential, commercial, and public facilities will create jobs that benefit community residents, facility owners, facilities, and the environment.

(8) Research, development, and deployment of renewable energy, advanced battery technologies, technologies to reduce fossil fuel consumption, and technologies to reduce energy consumption in buildings are vital to the rebuilding of the economy of the United States.

I doubt some of the findings here.

OK. So how does Foolsgold plan to pay for it?

SEC. 6. OFFSET.

(a) Prohibition- Except as provided in subsection (b), no amounts appropriated or otherwise made available for fiscal year 2009 (or for a fiscal year before fiscal year 2009 that remain available for obligation) may be obligated or expended, and no obligated amounts that remain available for expenditure may be expended, for the F-22A Raptor Fighter Aircraft.

(b) Exception for Windup of Program- Amounts covered by the prohibition under subsection (a) may be utilized solely for purposes in connection with the winding up of the program described in that subsection.

(c) Repeal of Multiyear Procurement Authority for F-22A Raptor Fighter Aircraft- Effective as of October 17, 2006, section 134 of the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (Public Law 109-364), relating to multiyear procurement authority for F-22A Raptor fighter aircraft, is repealed.

Right, which is the whole problem with the conservatives.

I hate what Washington is doing. Hate it. And I don’t just blame Democrats. It’s the whole system and most every politician. They all say they’re against it before they vote for it.

The big conservative blogs, like this one, are tent poles for bitching and moaning, but not for getting anything done. Love the information, but we need leadership, and while many of us would gladly step forward to try and get something done, we’re all just sitting in the cheap seats making conversation amongst ourselves.

The GOP, the official party of the Right, is nothing more than Democrat-lite these days, so I ask: where do we go to achieve more influence?

Remember Allah’s pre-election pessi-meter, that scale of his negativity? Personally, mine’s at a full-blown 10, gauging the aggressiveness of Obama, the weakness of the GOP as a whole, and an inability/unwillingness for any leadership among anyone of influence to organize any counter-movement that involves more than collective pissing and moaning.

So back to my question: what are you going to do about it?

Oh, and work stoppages and such won’t work. Why make less money and jeopardize ourselves? There are better ways to do this…

Suggestions?

Personally, mine’s at a full-blown 10, gauging the aggressiveness of Obama, the weakness of the GOP as a whole, and an inability/unwillingness for any leadership among anyone of influence to organize any counter-movement that involves more than collective bitching and moaning.

So back to my question: what are you going to do about it?

Oh, and work stoppages and such won’t work. Why make less money and jeopardize ourselves? There are better ways to do this…

Suggestions?

Off to work and my scarlet lettered cubicle.

Join the line or get the hell outta the way. No more mamby pamby holding tongues to protect someone’s feelings. The Dems can take their OZcloud and sell it on all the infomercials they want because more and more peeps are turning off the OZ-TV. If the GOP has any sense they’ll notice. If not we’ll find another party that does.

Diamondback, Timber, Sidewinder are all the same critter.

I am not sure why funding for contraceptives can’t be part of a comperehensive health/education package.

DeathToMediaHacks on January 24, 2009 at 1:21 PM

We need the government to provide our contraceptives now? Anyone who can’t afford a condom without relying on a government program should have higher priorities than sex, no?

The problem is DEFICIT spending of 1 trillion dollars. That is “spending” a massive amount of money that the Government does not hav — which means that the Government must borrow the money; which menas that the Government is crowding out private borrowers and increasing the national debt that must be serviced by interest payments.

Phil Byler on January 24, 2009 at 2:38 PM

I ask rhetorically, is there any way that we can recall this guy?

I can’t wait to see what happens after this thing passes, money is spent, and then the famous You-Tube lady doesn’t get her bills paid. Heartache!

Phil Byler on January 24, 2009 at 2:38 PM

I hear you, but the country has elected a guy who, along with his wife, didn’t regularly use an interest-bearing checking account until 2005. He doesn’t know squat about economics and markets, let alone personal finance.

What a disaster.

Stimulus Projects May Be Slow, CBO Says

by Lori Montgomery
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, January 21, 2009; Page D01

Less than half the money dedicated to highways, school construction and other infrastructure projects in a massive economic stimulus package unveiled by House Democrats is likely to be spent within the next two years, according to congressional budget analysts, meaning most of the spending would come too late to lift the nation out of recession.

A report by the Congressional Budget Office found that only about $136 billion of the $355 billion that House leaders want to allocate to infrastructure and other so-called discretionary programs would be spent by Oct. 1, 2010. The rest would come in future years, long after the CBO and other economists predict the recession will have ended.

“The new CBO report does not take into account the fastest spending provisions in the bill, leaving the false impression that the overall spend-out rates are slower than they actually are,” said Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). “These provisions will go out quickly to give the economy a jolt while others will represent down payments on crucial priorities for our economic future — investments in clean energy, health care, education and repairing our nation’s infrastructure.”

Still, the report from the CBO, the nonpartisan arbiter of congressional spending measures, offers a stark assessment of some of the Democrats’ top priorities. For example, of $30 billion in highway spending, less than $4 billion would occur over the next two years. Of $18.5 billion proposed for renewable energy, less than $3 billion would be spent by 2011. And of $14 billion for school construction, less than $7 billion would be spent in the first two years.

So Washington Post vs anonymous person speaking to Huffington Post. Who to believe!

If this report is not true, release the actual numbers and stop trying to ram a trillion dollars through Congress.

The NEW Deal part 2.

Yeah, when’s WWIII starting?

mjk on January 24, 2009 at 2:47 PM

I guess I am confused. When Bush was in charged and they rammed this through there were a high number of people against this. Now i can’t see that Obama is in charge why there aren’t as many people against it. I know he’s in charge why don’t the dems just ram it on through and say to hell with the people again. Why is Obama’s cronie the only one smart enough to get us out of this mess. Out of 300 million people there is only one man smart enough. It’s a scary thought.

Does anyone have an opinion on this as to what is going to happen down the road. I am trying to plan for what’s to come but I am not sure what. There are those out there that say it’s getting better and then there are those out there to say we screwed. What do you look for? How do you deal with these things as they arise?

Even better, HuffPost was quoting an unnamed AIDE at the CBO speaking off the record- and that’s the best rebuttal Ive seen.

He’s staring hard at that teleprompter.

It’s quite disconcerting – as if he’s not quite talking to you.

That’s because he’s a trained circus monkey. Dances while the hurdy gurdy is ground.

He can’t think for himself. That’s why the “I won” comment came out. Is that presidential? No.

And the left thought Bushisms were something to make fun of. This tool can’t even speak for himself.

Weakly address.

As I wrote my representatives to vote against TARP I was almost sick. It is not easy to stand up against something you know is a bad idea when everyone around you is going crazy and telling you it is the end of the world. We are being sold a bill of goods here and if we don’t stand up to it now we never will. I am not saying that there are enough of us to stop the bail out but we have to stridently oppose it.

Cindy Munford on January 24, 2009 at 3:08 PM

“We begin this year in the midst of an unprecedented crisis”

I’m pretty sure people that know history and I’m definitely sure those still alive that stood with their parents in the soup lines back in the early 1930′s would disagree.

lowandslow on January 24, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Where is the loyal opposition? Oh, wait a minute,..I see them,..WAY over there(points towards sunset while shielding eyes).

Such is the lack of opposition that Obamugabe has to attack radio personalities.

Am I the only one that thinks about how the higher ups at the RNC are as responsible for this disaster as the dems? Seriously, I hold McCain, Graham, Martinez, and all of the other yukkity yuks that jumped on the Sellout Express for this calamity.
NEVER FORGET!

JeffinOrlando on January 24, 2009 at 3:10 PM

Obama: Um, I know some of you are skeptical about spending a trillion dollars

That’s because some of us understand that you can’t spend your way out of a debt problem. Our government is so far in debt that there are only two quick ways out -declare bankruptcy and clear the US debt or print tons on new money which will lead to hyperinflation – both will destroy the country for the next 50 years.
The only solution that will not completely wreck things will take some pain now but in the long run will be a great benefit. That is to cut spending to bare bones(called the Constitution) and keep your spending within your means.
