Obama to GOP leaders: Stop listening to Rush Limbaugh; Update: Rush responds

posted at 1:40 pm on January 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

Haven’t they already?

President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

“You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,” he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.

One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

Smart points in response from Tom Maguire, especially number three. If, contra his campaign rhetoric, The One really does plan on bringing back Fairness, he just made his task of selling it to the public as a nonpartisan measure not aimed squarely at conservative talk radio a lot harder. Exit question: What’s his game here? Obama’s a shrewd guy; he must have known a comment like that would leak and that Limbaugh would have a field day with it. Maybe he’s trying to buy himself cover with the left by antagonizing Rush into a blood feud? Progressives will be less likely to grumble about his tack to the center if their archenemy is on the air every day accusing him of being the Marxist antichrist. Or, doubly Machiavellian, maybe he’s trying to bolster Rush’s influence so that he’ll drag the GOP back to the right, leaving the center to Obama and the Dems. Maybe? All theories welcome! The more sinister, the better.

Update: Limbaugh fires back, via Byron York:

To make the argument about me instead of his plan makes sense from his perspective. Obama’s plan would buy votes for the Democrat Party, in the same way FDR’s New Deal established majority power for 50 years of Democrat rule, and it would also simultaneously seriously damage any hope of future tax cuts. It would allow a majority of American voters to guarantee no taxes for themselves going forward. It would burden the private sector and put the public sector in permanent and firm control of the economy. Put simply, I believe his stimulus is aimed at re-establishing “eternal” power for the Democrat Party rather than stimulating the economy because anyone with a brain knows this is NOT how you stimulate the economy. If I can be made to serve as a distraction, then there is that much less time debating the merits of this TRILLION dollar debacle.

Follow the link and note well the conclusion.

We don’t actually know what kind of grades he got…anywhere.

jimmy the notable on January 24, 2009 at 6:47 PM

That’s very true (nor any of his board scores or how his bar exams went …). One of the few things we do know about the idiot messiah is that he graduated Harvard Law Magna Cum Laude, which is historically pathetic for a President of the Law Review (though not at all poor for a Precedent of the Law Review), as the president of the Review was supposed to have gotten the position on the basis of having the best grades. Added to this is the fact that Harvard changed their whole grading system (the same time that they changed the mechanism for picking editors and the president of the Law Review, in order to help minorities) to make the grading much more subjective and secretive. Heh … subjective assessments by left-wing Harvard law profs … what a joke.

RedState has links in this post that indicate some cracks in the media wall.

I have to say I was really encouraged to read them. Some of the media already knows they are being had about the issue of “transparency” and “access”.

CBS newsman Bill Plante is already mad. Look at the last phrase!

Veteran CBS newsman Bill Plante was one of the most vocal critics, questioning the White House’s handling of Wednesday night’s second swearing in – which was covered by just a four-reporter print pool that didn’t include a news photographer or TV correspondent.

He also asked new press secretary Robert Gibbs why ABC, which paid millions to host the DC Neighborhood Ball, was granted the only inauguration day interview with President Obama – a move he equated to “pay to play.”

Came across this at DC’s place,…

“Despite having admitted to daily smoking weed and smoking crack,Presidential candidate Obama still got admitted to Columbia University.

According to Columbia records, Obama was admitted despite thirteen Whites, seven Asians and six Hispanics having better grades and being more qualified.

According to admissions official Michael McHenry, “We were pressured to have Africans attend our university to get more government funds.” “He (Obama) was obviously unqualified but we needed the funds from the government.”

When asked about the students that were more qualified that were denied acceptance, McHenry states “I pray everyday that their lives have worked out. They were cheated out of a top quality education. I have prayed to God for forgiveness for the inequality and unfairness I have subjected upon the better qualified kids.”

Would love to get a peek at his records, by now I’m sure someone’s made a few “changes”

christene on January 24, 2009 at 7:10 PM

Good info, INC. This may be a short honeymoon, especially since Obama is acting like the only butt that needs kissing is his own. I can’t see the press continuing to enjoy the attitude this guy has displayed in his first four days in office. His little performance piece down in the White House basement press quarters was nauseating.

Someone correct me if I have this wrong:
One trillion dollars: If you had a trillion at the time Christ was crucified and spent 1 million a day every day since you would still have $260 billion left.
Anyone?
It’s beyond my comprehension, but it’s a heck of a lot of money.

Bambi on January 24, 2009 at 6:01 PM

Look,,, why not just pass a law and give every American a million dollars???
Why not??
It would end all suffering,, all housing problems,, all the health care costs,, all the debt problems many people have,, no more job problems,,,
Seriously!!!(it makes as much sense as any stimulus plan to date!!!)
There is something to this. You don’t need a trillion dollars to spend to make up low paying jobs,,, you won’t need to bail out failed banks,,, we have around 280,000,000 million citizens in the country. Pass a bill that would be enough to send every single American a check for $1,000,000 We would be a nation of millionaires!!
Poverty would be eliminated,, hunger out the window,, no more class envy,, children around the nation would have high self esteem because everyone is a millionaire!!
The majority of government spending could stop,, no one would need food stamps any more,, no one would need homeless shelters, We’d all be rich. Make it $2,000,000 for that matter. We would all have money to buy cars, buy houses,, the economy would jump through the roof. The unemployment rate wouldn’t matter anymore because everyone would have a fat bank account!!
Sure,, if some Republican was smart,, he should come up with this idea and push it for everything he has got!!
We would finally have utopia! And it would cost less than all this other spending,,, and you know what,, the ignorant welfare addicts of the world would love it!!
It would be bold! think of it!!
The Republicans come out and propose to and do what should have always been done!! No more lower or middle class!! it’s time to end all the failed bailouts,, all the failed government spending programs on poverty,, bring an end to the failed social security system,, stop the hunger, bring an end to homelessness,,, It is time now that we reach down into our pockets and do the smartest, best thing we can! Send every American regardless of class, education, health or status a $1,000,000 check now! Yes, Mr Obama,, this is the only stimulus plan we will support!! Every American deserves it! Money directly to the people! Do it now Sir!! End poverty now once and for all!!
I would so love to see the Democrats oppose making the poor rich!! I would love to see the Democrats oppose sending real checks to Americans while defending sending billions to banks!! I would love to see Obama explain why sending a million dollars to poor families across the nation would fail,, while spending a trillion to being them low paying jobs is a success!!!

Just copy a bit from the post (I used, “According to admissions official Michael McHenry”) and search for the phrase (quoted is best). I didn’t find DC’s place, but got other hits for it.

I’d note that that sentiment isn’t much different from what the New York Times, itself, wrote about the idiot messiah’s rise to the Precedency of the Law Review, First Black Elected to Head Harvard’s Law Review:

Change in Selection System

Mr. Obama was elected after a meeting of the review’s 80 editors that convened Sunday and lasted until early this morning, a participant said.

Until the 1970′s the editors were picked on the basis of grades, and the president of the Law Review was the student with the highest academic rank. Among these were Elliot L. Richardson, the former Attorney General, and Irwin Griswold, a dean of the Harvard Law School and Solicitor General under Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon.

That system came under attack in the 1970′s and was replaced by a program in which about half the editors are chosen for their grades and the other half are chosen by fellow students after a special writing competition. The new system, disputed when it began, was meant to help insure that minority students became editors of The Law Review.

Harvard, like a number of other top law schools, no longer ranks its law students for any purpose including a guide to recruiters.

progressoverpeace on January 24, 2009 at 7:27 PM

Yep,, everybody should be a millionaire!
End all government welfare programs at once, and in their place, send everyone a check for $1,000,000 or $2,000,000. tax free!
Stop all food stamp programs.
End all welfare programs.
Stop the school lunch programs
End housing assistance, rent rebates, heating assistance programs.
Stop all college loan programs.
Stop medicare and medicaid.

End all programs to the poor,,, no matter how small or large.
Send them each, every man woman and child a $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 check now!
It would be so, so much fun to watch the contortions of Democrats as they explain how this would not work! I would love to see them argue it against their own constituents!
I think a lot of poor would be willing to give up their services, free health care and housing and food stamps for life, if they were given a check for $2,000,000!!

JellyToast on January 24, 2009 at 7:28 PM

Good response from Rush. He didn’t personalize it, but rather threw it back on Obama and his efforts to distract from his weak “policy” decisions. I like the Saul Alinsky line. I’d like to see every single conservative — every single time he or she is interviewed — point out that Obama is using Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” as his presidential handbook. Say it enough times, it’ll become the narrative. Oh, and it’s also true. That’s helpful.

That must be why Detroit is enjoying a golden age of record sales and prosperity while the non-union Toyota plants down south are deserted while Toyota itself crumbles into nothingness.

Bishop on January 24, 2009 at 5:02 PM

Well, I would credit the animosity between unions and management as what is destroying both of them. Neither of them want to back down and be seen as the weaker side.

Consider that there are those who may not relish union membership, but know that they have motivated companies to strike a balance between profitable and civil to its employees.

I know you are just making fun of the idiot messiah, but the fact is that if Americans were given full rights to our citizenship, including the right to sell it on the open market (with the buyer subject to the same security restrictions and tests that immigrants must normally pass) then every single American would have control of an asset worth some hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I have been an advocate of this (with the government no longer being allowed to print up US citizenships at will to dole out to whomever they wanted) for a very long time. Open markets for citizenship. Let Americans see what being an American is really worth (and it’s worth a lot!) and let them see the value drop like a rock in response to idiotic policies, like the stimulus or the amnesty and “path to citizenship”.

This is really too funny. Leftists, and especially hard leftists like Obama, have no idea what conservatives are really like, and genuinely believe their own stereotypes concerning them. Obama, here, is illustrating the common delusion that conservatives generally take their marching orders from Rush Limbaugh. He actually thinks he’s helping conservatives become better people, by explaining to them that there are other possible sources of information. That’s how they think. I’m not kidding.

The libtards do it. We watch them do it. And we sit in our homes and beg the conservatives to do it, but other than Rush, Sean, a couple of others, “our side” can’t stay on message long enough to order a Coke. Just pick a couple of phrases, such as “Obama is taking his cues from Saul Alinsky and his ‘Rules for Radicals,” and say it over and over, each time you’re interviewed, no matter the topic, and it’ll eventually stick. But. They. Can’t. Do. It. They’re afraid, and fearful men don’t lead, they follow.

Why not just pass a law and give every American a million dollars?

And that one million would have the buying power of about $25k in about a few short months, if that long.

Doing it the Chicago way, trickling out funds to loyal supporters and tag-a-longs, in the long run, that same $1 million would eventually end up having the buying power of about $25k anyway, over several years, the dollar would tank worldwide…be on par with the Zambian Kwacha, if that much…but it would be a gradual thing, something that can be blamed on opponents to government bail-outs and graft, those nasty corporations raising prices and such, those troglodyte Rush listeners, those hate-filled conservatives.

The goal is to make every citizen a subject of the government, dependent on government for all needs, thus forcing citizens to chose life and servitude, or being deemed an anti-progressive, an enemy of the state, thus worthy of NO assistance from the state…obsolete to the state…and easily cast aside.

To once again cite Kipling:

“And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins,

When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins.”

When they talked about Mr. Geithner, they first spoke to a young D.C. correspondent who just thinks this all much ado about nothing, naturally. Then they spoke to Dan Henniger and a woman (sorry didn’t get her name). Those two felt that not only is Mr. Geithner tax evasion a problem but that his track record for the last 15 years had been completely wrong. I wish they would have expanded on the subject because it sounds like something the public should know more about.

califcon on January 24, 2009 at 8:01 PM

From Scared Monkeys, a commenter called Ted:

Take the test.

FIRST QUESTION: Who IS the actual and lawful 44th President of the USA?

ANSWER: Joe Biden

Biden was initially the Acting President for at least 5 minutes under either the Constitution’s Article 2 or the Constitution’s 20th Amendment, from 12:00 Noon 1/20/09, having already taken his Oath of Office and before Obama completed his ‘oath’ at approximately 12:05 PM, 1/20/09. Under the 20th Amendment if the President-elect shall have failed to qualify, or alternatively under Article 2 if the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties, at the time fixed for the beginning of the term, being 12:00 Noon 1/20/09, which ability and/or qualification includes that he take the Article 2 oath “before he enter on the execution of his office,” then either the Presidency shall devolve on the Vice President under Article 2 or the Vice President shall act as President under the 20th Amendment. (The importance of the oath in ‘commencing’ an ‘Obama Presidency’ — rather than merely the 1/20/09 Noon time — is confirmed by the re-take of the ‘oath’ by Obama at the White House on 1/21/09 after the first ‘oath’ was NOT administered by Justice Roberts NOR recited by Obama in the words as required under Article 2.)

This is significant because at such time that the Supreme Court finally rules on the merits on Obama’s disqualification as not being an Article 2 “natural born citizen” (clearly he is NOT), Biden’s automatic status (without needing to take a separate Presidential Oath) of being President would be predicated upon four different bases: First, having been Vice President under Article 2; second, having been Vice President-elect under the 20th Amendment; third, having been actual President in the hiatus before Obama took the ‘oath(s)’; and fourth, retroactively deemed President during the full period of the Obama usurpation so that the acts of the Federal Government under the usurpation can be deemed authorized and/or ratified by Biden’s legitimacy.

SECOND QUESTION: Who will be the 45th President?

ANSWER: Hillary Clinton

One must assume that Bill and Hillary Clinton have been aware of all of the above. Biden’s wife recently “let the cat out of the bag” on the Oprah Show that both Biden and Hillary had considered alternatively Veep or Secretary of State, in either case, setting up Hillary to be President on a vote of the Democratic Congress if need be.

THIRD QUESTION: Is Obama an unwitting victim of this troika or a knowing participant?

ANSWER: Yet undetermined.

It shouldn’t have to be expanded on, that is the sad part of the entire mess. A verified tax cheat who blames it all on his tax software, and now he is going to oversee the IRS, much less the Treasury?

A guy who just happens to make the same mistake with his tax software four years running, even though the software is updated every year, and the software developers have said they can prove the applicable formulas exist in the program.

This is so much bullshiite, I can barely stand it. How did we come to elect a guy like Ogabe?

I think the one that really torments him in his nightmares is Ann Coulter. He knows that Ann would tear him to shreds, on anything. Rush is certainly going to rip him a new one, without much effort, and Sean can even handle BHO pretty easily, but Ann Coulter would leave nothing but a few limbs.

I like the way Rush thinks. He’s a very smart guy. Sean is not so much smart, but he does his work and sticks to his fundamental principles (which usually leads him to identify good policy and point out bad). But Ann Coulter is highly intelligent, with a razor sharp wit and not given to suffer fools gladly. I am very impressed by her and I think BHO is truly terrified of her, along with the rest of the libs.

He never really throws himself in the fight to really make a big difference.

If I was Rush Limbaugh, I’d quietly tell Obama that if he pushes the Fairness Doctrine, I’ll call a million dittohead march. He needs to use his power as a deterrant to Obama’s arrogance, otherwise, Obama and Rahm WILL get it in their heads they can roll up the entire country and take total control.

Rush needs to decide if he is really gonna do something, or just talk. Like that hero of some movies you see that wants to be left alone, but gets pulled into being the hero due to obuses of the powers that be.

Why should Rush, or even any of us donate to a party that has moved away from conservative principles? Rush is a conservative first whom is a registered Republican, a distinction that many on the left who peddle in group think can’t seem to wrap their heads around. Rush does what he believes is right for the country, NOT what is right for the party, and for that I salute him.

I’m so tired of hearing this trash that conservatives or Republicans are “mind numbed robots” falling in line behind Limbaugh.

Ryan Gandy on January 24, 2009 at 10:16 PM

On the tactical level, this Obama comment about Rush, and by extension the implication that all Republicans and Conservatives are mind-numbed lemmings following Rush, has grown from a “distraction” to a cause celebre. Less than a week into Obama’s Administration and they are using time and effort to put out a Rush brush fire.

The response, thus far, is not what Obama wants…he wants everyone to fall in lockstep behind him…ain’t gonna happen.

Each “distraction” has value, if used in a concerted way, methodically keeping The One off his game. Less than a week into the Obama Administration. Hard to believe. But there is an Achilles Heal in front of us. To wit, keep Obama off script…and keep at it.

Silently sitting by and watching it all unfold may be a fun thing to do, but of greater importance is to keep the flames of each brush fire alive, hot, burning. He is a linear thinker. The script is vital. Think in a 360 evironment, keep Obama off script…and the fact that the Emperor has no clothes will become apparent to more and more Americans.

When he does something that is good for America…let it ride. No congratulatory commentary. Just let it ride.

When he does or says something that is not good for America, then, strike the match.

Give Obama a free pass…and we will see in our lifetime a deeply entrenched socialist America, with most of the population totally beholden to the Left…and taking that to battle will get ugly, and costly.

An ounce of prevention…because that pound of cure is going to be darned expensive.

Remember, after Palin was announced and Obama flipped his lid for a couple of weeks until the media bailed him out again? Dennis Miller said: “He doesn’t know whether to defecate or wind his watch.”

Just as I used to say about famous bag person Cindy Sheehan; once someone gets wrapped up in the all-encompassing bubble of media idoltry, they lose all touch with reality. They literally come to believe they can do no wrong.

Barack Obama has never done anything to show character. he led a very sheltered life even prior to the last two years. Now, whenever he comes into contact with even the tiniest little bit of even the most good-natured opposition, you see him start to come undone almost immediately.

And this guy is now the President of the United States. God help us all.

Obama is shrewd the way a con artist is shrewd, but a con artist picks his chumps carefully. Obama chose Chicago and the Dem machine because he knew he could rise if he played by their rules in an environment in which he’d rarely be called upon to defend his actions.

The Chicago Way protected him from the consequences of any failure by controlling all the outcomes (federal prosecutors being excepted.)

But now he’s in the international spotlight, and there are people are who are smarter than he is, albeit not more powerful. He’s likes the spotlight when he’s performing, but not when he’s making decisions.

Wethal on January 24, 2009 at 6:52 PM

Brilliant, Wethal!

It will be more difficult than ever for Obama to control his environment as Public Figure #1. That reality alone will expose him to the kinds of personal challenges he’s never faced before. It’s all been rather easy for him, until now, and not even a fawning press corps can doctor/rig his environment to insulate him like he’s used to. Welcome to the fresh air, my man President.

Having said that, there may be enough information to go on here to remove all doubt. :-)

I hadn’t heard about the history teacher; it’ll be interesting to hear what he/she has to say.

I’m sure some of us on the board know of people who went to that school; maybe one of us can chime in with their own observations? I know of at least four students myself who went there, but the oldest one was at least a few years behind Obama, and I’ve not talked to them for years any-hou.

I have no problem with people like Lieberman, Zell Miller, John McCain or Olympia Snowe. There’s plenty of room for all of them in the Republican tent. As long as they don’t try to pretend they’re the ones leading the show. There is nothing good that can possibly come of that.

Disturb the Universe on January 24, 2009 at 10:43 PM

Yes – the thing is, over my (not-too-long) lifetime I’ve seen the “diversity ratio” of liberals vs. conservatives change, as leftists remake liberalism, and consciously drive more and more folks out of their movement, branding them as “conservatives”.

In other words: I think the conservative movement, whether self-defined or defined by outsiders such as the media, academe or Code Pink, has grown more diverse over the last 30 years, and the liberal movement correspondingly less diverse, even as the population itself has remained relatively static. The people have stayed largely the same, but the labels have shifted. All of this, mind you, was agitated for and driven by modern leftism “liberalism”.

It’s fascinating to compare what someone like Lawrence Auster has to say about conservatism (where, among other things, he is constantly striving to reinforce the traditional definition of conservatism, and keep it from “sliding” the same way that liberalism did…) to other so-called right-wing pundits of the day, like Coulter, Michelle, Krauthammer, Gigot, Hannity, and many many others.

Lol. I never thought of that. How about this, give everyone 1 or 2 million dollars IF they agree to invest 10% in the market or some other investment so it can collect interest?

It’s fun to think about. Besides, who wouldn’t say yes to them getting 1 or 2 million of their own money back. I think something like that would only work if every tax payer (and only tax payers) got to vote on the idea first.

As for Rush, I’m not that big of a fan, but who is Obama to tell anyone who they can and can’t listen too? The way he is going, I wonder if he will even make 2 years into his Presidency before he is impeached.
