Obama to GOP leaders: Stop listening to Rush Limbaugh; Update: Rush responds
posted at 1:40 pm on January 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.
“You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,” he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.
One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.
Smart points in response from Tom Maguire, especially number three. If, contra his campaign rhetoric, The One really does plan on bringing back Fairness, he just made his task of selling it to the public as a nonpartisan measure not aimed squarely at conservative talk radio a lot harder. Exit question: What’s his game here? Obama’s a shrewd guy; he must have known a comment like that would leak and that Limbaugh would have a field day with it. Maybe he’s trying to buy himself cover with the left by antagonizing Rush into a blood feud? Progressives will be less likely to grumble about his tack to the center if their archenemy is on the air every day accusing him of being the Marxist antichrist. Or, doubly Machiavellian, maybe he’s trying to bolster Rush’s influence so that he’ll drag the GOP back to the right, leaving the center to Obama and the Dems. Maybe? All theories welcome! The more sinister, the better.
Update: Limbaugh fires back, via Byron York:
To make the argument about me instead of his plan makes sense from his perspective. Obama’s plan would buy votes for the Democrat Party, in the same way FDR’s New Deal established majority power for 50 years of Democrat rule, and it would also simultaneously seriously damage any hope of future tax cuts. It would allow a majority of American voters to guarantee no taxes for themselves going forward. It would burden the private sector and put the public sector in permanent and firm control of the economy. Put simply, I believe his stimulus is aimed at re-establishing “eternal” power for the Democrat Party rather than stimulating the economy because anyone with a brain knows this is NOT how you stimulate the economy. If I can be made to serve as a distraction, then there is that much less time debating the merits of this TRILLION dollar debacle.
Follow the link and note well the conclusion.

Well considering how well the Republicans did last year being “Democrat Lite” maybe this is an Obama fatwa they should ignore.
Since the libs have everything anyway, why give them any bipartisan cover at all? Let ‘em do everything themselves.

Obama got elected despite Rush working against him during the election.
Now that Obama IS the president, he fears Rush more than ever, because Rush… well I don’t know exactly what Rush is going to do? Rant a lot?
This is exactly like how Olberman ranted a lot and brought the Bush administration to its knees.

I’ve thought about this all night, AP. And honestly, I think he slipped. I don’t doubt that what he expressed in this story is what he has been trying to communicate behind the scenes, but I think this was his campaign “voice” slipping out. Throughout the campaign he always referenced Hannity and Rush. It works on the campaign trail, but it sounds so petty when you have the Oval Office. Again, I’m not saying he didn’t mean it, I’m just saying he didn’t mean to actually say it. He has made a lot of un-presidential moves this past week, from asking an advisor if he is going to issue another EO, to going to the press corp. and saying he’s not going to answer any questions. That’s just stupid stupid behavior. I think this is another one. He’s become so accustomed to calling out Rush, that he doesn’t realize he’s now the President and what exactly that means. This was, however, a huge mistake. Just ask Harry Reid how his last tussle with Rush went. OR…he’s really that arrogant, and he thinks he can be this audacious.

BTW…I don’t listen to Rush, but I’m compelled to defend him over Barry Whosane, any day of the week. Sorry Rushaters.
The fact that BO attacked Rush and tried to shame the Repubs in ‘Congress’ (who also don’t listen to him), should be the issue. Censorship cometh and some of you seem to be in agreement with it, (because you don’t want to be seen as ‘stupid’?). Amazing.

Before the election, I wrote down a series of predictions for what a future Bambi administration would look like and what a future McCain administration would look like based off of historical trends and where I see the economy, society, international relations, and our culture heading. I claim no psychic abilities (awhooohooo) or precognitive powers or anything like that. I’m going with a mixture of historical knowledge, thrown in with some common sense and gut instinct. Now, had McCain won, I had predicted that we’d be going through pretty hard times–possibly a depression amongst other problems that he might not have been able to surmount; but the ones for Bambi are even more dire because of his basic character flaws. Much as I hate to say it, every single one of my predictions for a Bambi administration have come true so far.
You don’t want to know where my predictions take us, but believe me, it’s not to a very cheery place.
Matt Helm on January 24, 2009 at 2:25 PM
That’s what I think, too. Republicans have no power and very minimal influence. Why bother working with Democrats? It’s just gonna make the Democrats look more “bi-partisan and caring” to the public.

If you do a search of “Rush Limbaugh Obama” this is all over the place today.
Here’s the headline from the London Telegraph:
Barack Obama picks a fight with Rush Limbaugh as bipartisan spirit crumbles
It’s not too smart to make those remarks, because they were just the kind of thing to get picked up and blasted around.
One thing I don’t know. Was the media in on this meeting? Or were these remarks leaked by the pols who were there?

An effort to discredit Rush, and a warning that conservatism won’t be tolerated.

He said that if Obey continues to push the potentially destructive policies that he has been promising, then he hopes The One fails. It wasn’t wishing for failure of a presidency, just a failure of implementing bad policy. Very easy to take out of context, of couse. Which is standard operating procedure for the left.

And if we are smart all of us should be worrying about our wallets. It is funny that you mention the Soros tactic because on Friday Rush said that conservatives should start lobbying our representatives.

Cindy Munford on January 24, 2009 at 2:26 PM
President Obama should listen to his historians. Banning books results in people rushing (no pun intended) to get and read to see what is so objectional. In the 1990′s President Clinton finally learned that complaining about Rush was the wrong tact, and instead ignored Limbaugh, but it took time to learn that.
The result of President Obama’s complaint will be an increase in Limbaugh’s listenership, and loss of public support for the fairness doctrine.
If Limbaugh doesn’t sue and win, he’ll go to XM and then his followers and his haters will subscribe to listen. Too funny if you ask me.
Snake307 on January 24, 2009 at 2:26 PM
Good point. If it is a calculated strategy, he may be trying to turn his popular support against Rush, hoping to demonize him. Once 70% of a population learn to hate a public figure it is difficult to undo. Hatred is powerful force that often leads to a mob like mentality. If 70% of people learn to hate Rush, then the other 30% will be more inclined to keep their opinions on the matter to themselves for fear of various forms of repercussion.

The Dems overestimate the influence of Rush, Hannity, and Levin. Rush and Levin in particular despise McCain, and yet somehow that ***hole got the Republican nomination. I hope Obama’s attack does get more people to listen and become conservative! But I sure don’t see it yet! Maybe we should leave the RINOs and form a CONSERVATIVE Party.

Simple: Rush isn’t exactly adored by the political center, and is already on record as saying that he hopes Obama fails. If Obama can make the GOP position synonymous with the Limbaugh position in the public’s perception (something that the GOP and Limbaugh will certainly rush to do now that this has leaked), Obama will benefit by their apparent mindless obstructionism. Yes, he knows what he’s doing.
Big S on January 24, 2009 at 2:29 PM
And the truth, as usual, lies somewhere in between. Obama is a moderately intelligent individual who has studied a variety of ways in which to manipulate others and game the political system to his own advantage. He has been aided greatly in both endeavors by a besotted MSM that has long been desperate for an articulate, non-threatening, moderately intelligent, appropriately-pedigreed (i.e. Ivy-educated) black man who shares their liberal views.

If they tell you the moon is blue–and you see that it’s white, trust your own eyes! Millions of people listen to Rush who espouses conservative values. He’s hardly the spokesperson for the GOP as other posters have noted.
BO is a confused, little boy playing at being POTUS. He used Rush’s name in true liberal, snark form. Anything associated with conservative thinking is taboo, stupid, so non-Noonish! I don’t think is was a shrewd move at all. He repeated the same mistake he made in San Francisco by insulting the “bitter clingers”. The difference is that no one was paying attention at that time. This is going to be made very public by Rush – for the next four years.
Liberals always amaze me. They insult and ridicule the people whose support they need. It’s a sort of bully tactic that children use with parents.

As Rush says, he’s the last man standing right now. If Obama can slay Rush in a 1v1, he wins everything. Consider this the first skirmishes leading to the coming fairness doctrine battle. Rush is happy to take Obama on, and Obama is keen on getting the left back under his control united against a single enemy. In the end I think that Obama’s plan will backfire into uniting the right against him.

I think that, with Democrats back in power, the conservatives who once abandoned Republicans because they considered Bush a “relentless warmonger who eats Arabian babies” or a “big-spending, big-government corporate fascist” (i.e. Paulites and the like) will start to see the Republican Party as a symbol of hope once again when faced with Obama’s crappy policies. Maybe we can show them that conservatism can be “cool” again and convince them that the GOP truly is the party of limited government. I dunno; it’s just a thought.

Precisely. Conservatism will in due course find leaders–they’re already beginning to emerge. What we conservatives have to do is to stand firm on our main principles: the sacrosanctness of individual rights stemming from nature and based on the rational individual and not collective identity groups; individual responsibility; the sacrosanctness of private property; the free market as the most productive means of achieving economic prosperity; the worth of the individual as opposed to the identity group; and a strong national defense. We need to hammer these core concepts home anywhere and everywhere.
And drive home to our leaders and remember ourselves to quit playing Charlie Brown to the libbies’ Lucy!

But, yeah, its a shame that we didn’t follow your Orwellian example and, say, segregate dorms in the name of “multi-culturalism” and “diversity”.

Never pick a fight with anyone who buys bandwidth by the barrelful.
BDavis on January 24, 2009 at 2:47 PM
If BO wants this fight, he will have to fight more people than Rush. No, I don’t mean his listeners although they will be vocal.
Rush generates revenues for the stations who broadcast his show. They will not want to alter their arrangements. Remember also that Rush just signed a HUGE contract in the fall. Rush will not have to fight BO alone.
Barry the Buffoon may have his first engagement with capitalism in a very raw form.

This man is dangerous – in a fools way. I’m just wondering if there are any ‘re-education’ funds hiding in that Trillion $ giveaway.
EZnSF on January 24, 2009 at 2:57 PM
Not only is Obama arrogant, he is salivating power. Look at his executive orders, politicians slobbering all over him, goofy drones that buy Obama thongs and vote for whom Oprah tells them to vote for, and his response to republicans who proposed their own bill, “I won.”
Since Rush is actually the most powerful voice and leader of conservatism, Obama wants to rid Rush.
I hope some of the senate and house drones are reading our comments. We are tired of the liberals, and tired of the cowardice of the republicans we put into office. It is time to stand up like men and women and fight the liberal jerks who are trying rapidly to shift our country in socialism.
How many elections do these dumb republicans have to lose to get with the program?!

I really don’t think he’s all that shrewd. Giving the finger – dissing Nancy Reagan – singling out Fox News, Rush, etc., as his own personal enemies – all of these things are just STUPID.
I think he thinks his position is so cool, or something, that everyone who isn’t onboard with him now will be soon. And that’s not just stupid, it’s deluded.

Anyone who exhibits such hubris because drones adore him is a fool. Barry’s problem is that there are millions of smart people who will never buy into his BS, and they won’t take orders from him, either.
He’s going to crack when, and if, that realization registers.
Cody1991 on January 24, 2009 at 3:03 PM
The One needs to get elected in 4 years. He has to start campaining now so all those that voted for him this time around vote for him next time around. He figures if he goes after Rush he’ll only be down 20 million votes and he can still pull out a victory for the next election. He’s thinking 4 years from now then another 2.
Brat4life on January 24, 2009 at 3:03 PM
Yes, you libs seem to have ‘won’. I’m glad you are enjoying your wallow in the victory. But the thing that gives me comfort is that you are still wrong. Your way DOES. NOT. WORK. That you keep trying to do things that have always resulted in failure makes you something of a joke to those of us who have read up a little, though not nearly as funny as you would be if you weren’t dragging us and more importantly, OUR CHILDREN down with you. I have no doubt at all that in the end, you still lose. So enjoy it while you can.

His frequent giving the finger–remember he did it on more than one occasion to more than one individual and his insult of Nancy Reagan is really more the acts of an immature, petulant child. The singling out of Fox News, Rush, and Hannity are more the actions of a thin-skinned bully who can’t stand to be opposed.

What are we? Truthers now?
Here’s my theory: Hussein’s an idiot!
madmonkphotog on January 24, 2009 at 3:05 PM
I can’t overthink this. Obama has made a mistake rooted in immaturity, arrogance and inexperience. Doesn’t matter what he said just that the said it. He blatantly exposed himself to the fact that he hates criticism. Granted, the majority of public voices on the airways have stroked his ego beyond belief but the bottom line is this is a man who can’t stand to not be adored and cherished. Not a good character trait for a democracy, but yet a fine one for a tyrannical leader. Please keep talking, Slick. The tides will turn soon enough.
sherry on January 24, 2009 at 3:05 PM
Yes you can. I have recommended Rush to family members who are now a little more sane because of it. Some of them I could barely talk politics with before. Now when we do they agree with me more often than not, which is my goal. To get everyone on the planet to agree with Rush.
It won’t be long now that O slipped up. What a child.

Personally, I think it’s just one of a number of unforced errors caused by his being a bitter ideologue. He’d hidden it well prior to this.
I also think that he’s good at photo op bipartisanship. BHO’s great at the kumbayah photo-op, then not incorporating a thing that the R’s have suggested. It’s all about the photo-op.
Finally, I’m certain that BHO is thin-skinned. When Rep. Cantor didn’t follow the script of everything being sweetness & light, BHO got upset.

Could be something to that. His already over-inflated ego has been endlessly stroked for the past four days and by now he must think he’s invincible.
He should seriously consider the likelihood that he hit his peak in popularity this week and has nowhere to go but down.

Here here.
The nation is on a two steps forward, one step back routine with liberalism being the step back.
America doesn’t have it in its veins to be like France, sooner or later the spirit which created the United States will reemerge. It will be painful, but necessary. MY kids will not be dragged under, they will be the ones fighting back.

If public opinion does turn against him, we could see our first Presidential Temper Tantrum at a Press Conference.
kingsjester on January 24, 2009 at 3:08 PM
That’s just it. If it were just libbies like MediaHacks drowning in their own sewage, I’d have a good laugh–there are few things funnier than historical irony. Problem is, the libbies insist on dragging us and our loved ones down with them, leaving behind misery, pain, and a lot of hurt. If Bambi and the Dems get their way, future generations will pay the price.
