Heart-ache: Some Christians miffed at Obama’s reference to atheists

posted at 8:23 pm on January 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

Really? Here’s what he said:

“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers.”

100 percent true. And yet:

With that one line, the president “seems to be trying to redefine American culture, which is distinctively Christian,” said’ Bishop E.W. Jackson of the Exodus Faith Ministries in Chesapeake, Va. “The overwhelming majority of Americans identify as Christians, and what disturbs me is that he seems to be trying to redefine who we are.”

Earlier this week, Jackson was a guest on the popular conservative Christian radio show ‘Janet Parshall’s America,’ where a succession of callers, many of whom identified themselves as African-American, said they shared the concern, and were perplexed and put off by the president’s shout-out to nonbelievers…

Jackson says: “Obviously, Jewish heritage is very much a part of Christianity; the Jewish Bible is part of our Bible. But Hindu, Muslim, and nonbelievers? I don’t think so. We are not a Muslim nation or a nonbelieving nation.”

Newsflash, champ: Add up Jews, Mormons, Muslims, and Hindus and you’re still barely a quarter of the way towards the number of Americans who check “unaffiliated” when asked on surveys. In fact, among Christian sects, only Catholics and Baptists outnumber them. As for the moronic atheists who are turning cartwheels because The One boldly acknowledged a simple fact, see this guy: “Why on earth should I be moved, impressed, or happy that someone has deigned to recognize the physical existence of atheists in America? Wow — atheists exist! Stop the presses!” Exit question one: Does anyone seriously have a problem with this? I figure half of the progressive base is atheist; he was basically obliged to say it. Exit question two: Dude, what if the rumors are true? I can have the “My President Is An Atheist” t-shirts available for sale at Cafe Press within an hour!

This is a bit of Obama bashing since Bush made similar expressions when talking about America and Americans.

At the 2006 National Prayer Breakfast, Bush said:

In our country, we recognize our fellow citizens are free to profess any faith they choose, or no faith at all. You’re equally American if you’re a Jew, or a Christian, or a Muslim. You’re equally American if you choose not to have faith.

Similar examples abound.

I guess one can argue that Bush meant something different than Obama.

Of course one can. The fact that Bush said the exact same thing as Obama is irrelevant to those who love to have their preconceptions confirmed. Bush is ‘us’; Obama is ‘them.’

That remark The One said should make people aware of his agenda. Muslims? That is so far from the truth. Non Believers? Right! I don’t blame the churches for being upset. But, look at all the Christians that voted for that Clown. Look at the Catholics that voted for that Clown. A man that shuts down Gitmo because it is inhumane. But aborting a unborn child is not. He is a sick man and so is his cabinet. Our Reps are not to far behind him. The Republican’s that we have left that are real. Better start standing up.

He should have said:

“We are a nation of Christians and Jews, Muslims and Hindus, and nonbelievers.”
The order is important. With a simple word shift Obama negates centuries of established Judeo-Christian influence and places the johnny-come-lately Islam in the more prominent position. Stealth Jihad, people. Very subtle but effective.

OK, from Wiki, their designations and their statistics in Religion in the United States:

* Christian: (78.5%)
o Protestant (51.3%)
o Roman Catholic (23.9%)
o Mormon (1.7%)
o other Christian (1.6%)
* unaffiliated (12,1%)
* none (4%)
* other or unspecified (2.5%)
* Jewish (1.7%)
* Buddhist (0.7%)
* Muslim (0.6%)

I agree with

Disturb the Universe on January 24, 2009 at 9:03 PM

that listing Christians and Jews first would have been best because of our heritage.

However, the Muslims are statistically at the bottom right now, beaten out by the NONE!

This was all about the multi-culti inclusion of Muslims if you want my opinion.

Well, I get about the same sense from this as I do when a democrat says that we should help the poor. That is, the statement is true at face value but the real reason behind the statement is some Marxist/liberal agenda. So when I hear B.H.O. say this is a nation of something other than Christian, then what I hear is: There are people in this country who are not Christian, therefore we should not allow Christian principles in our governing and instead replace it with a Marxist/humanist style agenda.

On the other hand the problem I have with this is the churches mission statement says “To win the lost and equip the saved to be Christian leaders and Kingdom builders for Jesus Christ.” So how is taking a stand against atheists doing anything for “winning the lost”? Obama wants close to a trillion bucks for stimulation. Pelosi and Reid are unfettered. Economic advisors to Obama are drawing racial lines between who will get jobs and who wont. Gitmo is being closed. At least two SC judges are going to be up. The idea of a “National Bank” is being kicked around. We are now officially exporting the death industry of abortion. The AG nominee has skirted the issue of whether or not he’d support the Fairness Doctrine. We have a tax cheat, who is so smart he can’t run TurboTax, and who is about to have three hundred fifty billion dollars at his disposal, with the possibility of another installment of 700 billion, as Treasury Secretary. A continual balkanization of the U.S. And don’t even get me started on Chavez, Putin, China, Iran, etc. So no, AP, his list of “those he must mention” means very little to me right now. Obama makes a statement that is factual on its face, but the goal of which is to complete the long-building social progressive effort to erase all Christian influences from Western culture. The unstated subtext is “Therefore, we should allow no explicitly Christian references; can’t play favorites, now, can we?” This is standard leftist fare.

I agree with you NeverLib, but I’ll add that I don’t think he really has much of ANY religion himself. I don’t even think he is atheist or agnostic. I think he is so narcissistic that he doesn’t even concern himself with whether or not there is a God. It is, after all, all about the “O”.

20 years in “Reverend” Wright’s “church” convinces me of nothing. He was there simply to propel himself politically. From Newsbusters:

Despite having little previous interest in religion, Obama joined Wright’s growing church in part to deepen what one friend called “a whole web of relationships” in the community that gave him a strong political base and a well-connected mentor.

Worse than just an empty suit. Obama is a soulless, narcissistic socialist.

“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers.”

100 percent true.

A banality disguised as a profundity. (What a stunner, coming from Barack).

The same can be said about many countries on this planet. So what? It’s like an incomplete snippet of a census report of residents, which, dare I say excludes, say, Wiccans, Sikhs, Shintos, Taoists, Neopagans, Native Americans spiritual beliefs of many forms, and a plethora of New Ageists. How mean-spirited not to mention them.

And don’t forget short people, tall people, midgets, dwarfs, giants, non-people, and those who are somewhere in between.

Indeed, you yourself say as much here:

As for the moronic atheists who are turning cartwheels because The One boldly acknowledged a simple fact, see this guy: “Why on earth should I be moved, impressed, or happy that someone has deigned to recognize the physical existence of atheists in America? Wow — atheists exist! Stop the presses!”

One reason Obama was elected was the fact that his “words…just speeches” were not carefully scrutinized throughout the campaign. He got a pass on almost everything he said and how he said it. Words are a powerful indicator of ones thought process.

Giving status to Muslims in his speech, above Jews was a direct hit. He exposed his intent and where his true loyalties rest.

This has always been a Judeo/Christian nation. Always. His wording was part of his plan to rearrange America.

The thing about Obama to watch for is this; when he is talking on the fly his intentions will be sloppily exposed. When he is giving a prepared speech, his intentions will be more covert but available to people who understand his ideology.

katy on January 24, 2009 at 9:37 PM

I think that’s why he’s garnered such power. We have a world of empty souls looking for meaning and purpose! Life is so good for the godless affluent and so difficult for the brainwashed poor (because of liberal indoctrination) that Obama fills the void and gives them purpose.
Sad!!!

Thanks! It’s good to know I’m not alone. I hesitate to say that kind of stuff because people just think it’s sour grapes.

I think Lincoln was awesome but I doubt I would have given him my phone number.

No issue with that line here.

If only that line was the only issue I had with Obama, like these guys. That’d be swell.

With all his high-falutin upper-crusty celebrity pals in Hollyweird, I’m more shocked he didn’t mention Scientologists than in the fact he mentioned “nonbelievers”.

But I think he used the wording he selected, intentionally. I can’t say with conviction what his intentions are/were, but he could have phrased what he said differently without taking away from his speech.

No one should be excluded, or included, from anything because of religious views and beliefs. It just simply shouldn’t warrant mention in an inauguration speech in the first place. But if he felt so compelled to mention it in his inauguration speech, he could have made the same point by simply saying anything neutral, like, “Our nation is a melting pot of various religious views and beliefs”… or something else to that effect.

Even if you’re an aethiest, you have a belief. You believe God doesn’t exist. So everyone’s covered and no one’s slighted.

As a Catholic, I think Obama’s statement recognizes what I’ve always thought to be true about the country. I don’t see any need for controversy over this.

jgapinoy on January 24, 2009 at 10:15 PM

I have to disagree. First off this nation, whether it is to be acknowledged was founded on Judeo/Christian principles.
Because the media and Hollywood produce an image of a secular society does not make it so.

The majority of people in this country still hold true to conservative ideals but the media has convinced them otherwise. Most people work hard, love God, love and care for their families, pay taxes, give to charity, go to synagogue and church and I could go on and on.

The problem I see is they don’t have a voice. They go about their day in a constant state of attack on those values yet it does not mean they no longer exist. Why is it that Fox and Limbaugh and Hannity do so well? It’s there!! But it is on its last leg if we don’t restore it

katy on January 24, 2009 at 10:30 PM

Newsflash, champ: Add up Jews, Mormons, Muslims, and Hindus and you’re still barely a quarter of the way towards the number of Americans who check “unaffiliated” when asked on surveys. In fact, among Christian sects, only Catholics and Baptists outnumber them.

I’m not particularly interested in bean counting, but don’t Mormons are Jews belong in the Judeo-Christian category?

On another note, am I the only one that doesn’t think he’s all that great a speaker? And I’m not just saying that because I have so many issues with him. Honestly, I’m serious. Aside from the content of his speeches (which turns my stomach,) his tone, inflection and cadence seem sophomoric to me.
IrishEi on January 24, 2009 at 9:48 PM

The content of his speeches are incredibly vacuous. And of course he plagiarizes freely (“we are the ones we’ve been waiting for” (Bono), “words, just words” (Deval Patrick), “you’ve been hoodwinked and bamboozled” (Malcolm X)… ad nauseum.

Have you ever noticed how he slides in and out of his ‘authentically black’ accent? It gives me the creeps because it’s so phony and calculated, depending on his audience.

Mormons belong in the non-Christian category, at least according to their 80′s advertisements. They’ve since tried to pass themselves off as Christians. Problem is Christians only believe in the existence of one God. Mormons believe that there are many Gods but that they choose to worship only the Father God. If you ask a Mormon whether they believe in one God they will answer that, “yes, we worship one God.” Which of course really doesn’t answer the question.

The Romans too believed in many gods yet they would choose to worship but one of them. Think of Mormons along these lines. They’ll deny it, but as you get up higher in their secret rites and rituals (Masonic style) you’ll find that indeed they believe in the existence of many Gods but only worship one of them.

Savvy?

What about the Buddhists and the Scientologists and the Deists and the pagans…?

And I thought Obama was supposed to be so inclusive and tolerant.

Disturb the Universe on January 24, 2009 at 8:39 PM

The question is ‘why did he say this’. The answer is that he thought it would make people vote for him. He doesn’t say or do anything that he personally believes. He says and does whatever some committee tells him will get him more votes. This is the ultimate evolution of Democracy. The only thing that matters is getting elected. . . policy is secondary to getting elected by any means necessary.

This remark makes him win votes with ‘faithful’ and that is why he said it. There is nothing deep or revealing about this comment.

That said, I still expect us to be seeing Mohammed Obama pass the torch to the next president in a similar fasion that way Cassius Clay and Lou Alcindor did.

I became aware tha this “study” was done a while back ago,I will be the first one to admit I wrote it off as just being a bit weird but then later on,the person doing it compared Obamas speech patterns with a few others and if I remember the study it came in at Palin having around a perc of 30 in hers,McCain was rather low-in the teens, and Obama was running up in the 70s.I think Hitler ran in the 50′s. So maybe this write up has something to it.

canditaylor68 on January 24, 2009 at 11:54 PM

The Scripture states that righteousness exalts a nation. This country was founded on a Judeo-Christian foundation. Our ideals are what have caused us to flourish and attracted millions to swarm here and not to any other country in the world. The people who came here without a Judeo-Christian foundation either assimilated or failed to. Many, a growing number, who failed to assimilate, or outright reject the existance of a God are a major contributing factor to the disintegration of our societal strengths and have become the base of the Democratic Party which don’t seem to mind slaughtering babies in or halfway out of the womb; would rather give comfort to those who would destroy us and our ideals than to protect us from them, etc. Liberalism is not just a mental pathos but a spiritual evil.

In the Mormon scheme of things both Jesus and Lucifer (brothers) had a plan for the world. Jesus’ plan was accepted and Lucifer (who later turned into Satan) was the sore loser. It’s EXTREMELY convoluted and no two Mormons will answer you the same way. A lot of ex-Mormons (I’m not one BTW) have written extensively on the subject, like the Tanners. They run ministries to try and help Mormons escape their religion.

The fact that Jesus and Satan are brothers in Mormon theology came out during the primary and was quickly silenced by RomneyCo. The Book of Moron doesn’t contain theology like this but their other two canonical books, The Pearl of Great Price and Doctrine and Covenants most certainly do. I copied this from the LDS site.

The scriptures, or “standard works,” of the Latter-day Saints comprise the Old Testament and New Testament of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. According to Elder Ballard, these scriptures constitute a “great, indivisible whole” of God’s revealed word that help humankind understand the past, present and future. The great gospel plan contained in these works does not apply to one generation or one people alone but to all of God’s children throughout all time. Thus, in the words of Elder Ballard, “those who think that one part is more important or more true than the other parts are missing some of the beauty and completeness of the canon of ancient scripture.”

As with all cults it’s always the “Bible PLUS.” It always comes down to “some guy said” which is the basis of all false religions around the world. Christianity breaks out of that mold due to fulfilled prophecy and the resurrection of Jesus. The Bible makes it clear that in the latter days there will be many false prophets and false Christs.

That he mentioned non-believers? No.

ddrintn on January 25, 2009 at 1:13 AM

There are two different issues here:
1. America has Atheists (and Muslims, and Jews, and Hindus etc.)
2. America is culturally Judeo-Christian. No matter how many Atheists you have, they’re ateists who don’t go to church on Christmas, not atheists who don’t go to mosque on Ramadan. Their entire culture is Christian, and a good thing too. Otherwise America would be Turkey.
