It seems that what the entertainers do not understand is what it takes to make money outside of the entertainment business. Entertainment people are actually quite isolated from business people in what it takes to run a business. While some may go from project to project and use the title of 'businessman', they do not actually need to concern themselves with things like managing a payroll or an inventory. They think, well I just hire an accounting firm and that is all there is. They have little to no understand of what it would take to setup and run a company to make washing machines or any sort of manufactured product. Managing a department store would be beyond most all of them.

This is why watching the 'celebrities' and many of the 'talking political heads' on TV can get really silly. As entertainers, they just do not get it.

When it turns out the very politicians making decisions regarding business have no understanding, it is not as amusing.

By rumor, the Kennedy family ran half a billion or so through Fiji with $10,000 or so in taxes. I was told that the Kennedy 'skip the inheritance tax' dodge was only an urban legend.

Reminds me of when Huckabee came up with that "tax me more" fund, where folks could voluntarily tax themselves and send it to the fund. He was tire of hearing people say that they were not taxed enough. It didn't generate much money. Subsequent "tax me more" provisions in other states have met with the same limited "success".

You want to pay your 50%? Cough it up, slick.

Have you guys seen Cribs on MTV (I know I shouldn't admit that I've watched that before) where rappers, athletes, etc. try to out do each other by having the biggest most expensive homes, cars, jewelry and clothes. The rap industry is all about how much stuff one can amass. I highly doubt he'll pay 50% of his income to the government. I'm sure he'll hire the best accountant to get away with paying the least taxes possible. Paying taxes is very pedestrian -- only the little people do that, not rich famous rappers.

An agent once told me that even DEAD stars like publicity. If it makes them seem cool, all the better!

This is B. S. on the part of the entertainers. And really strange on the part of The One and His sidekick who couldn't give 5% of their own money to charity let alone extra contributions to the IRS.

When Reagan entered office, wasn’t the top bracket 70%?

Yep and it was 91% when Kennedy took office. No, that is not a typo.

Yeah, Kennedy ran as a tax-cutter. The top bracket was cut to 70%. I believe that the progressive nature of the tax structure was different than it was by 1980. I don't think the brackets reflected the inflation of the 70s.

The expansion of the 60s was squandered on the War on Poverty (a war we lost in the most undignified manner... yet we're still trying to fight it using the same strategy).

What I think you're seeing is the beginning of a movement to try and change attitudes about reimposing a 50-60% top marginal rate. (Under Carter, the top marginal rate was 70%, albeit with significantly more deductions available that probably reduced the effective tax rate to more like 50%.) This drumbeat has been building for a few years, with guys like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett saying "I have no problem paying way higher taxes." Now you're getting "cool people" saying the same thing.

These are extremely scary times we live in. I fear for this country every day. New Deal I kept the Republicans out of Congress for 60 years - largely by making retirees and union members dependent on the government. New Deal II will make everyone dependent on government for their entire retirement (plans are afoot to nationalize 401(k) plans), health care, and so on. Republicans will be shut out of power forever, and our philosophies will be relegated to the dust bin of history -- along with, eventually, our civilization.

Yes, but there were "loopholes" and "write-offs" that effectively cut that rate significantly.
