Video: The Blagojevich presser; Update: The 2007 Blago tax hike

posted at 5:20 pm on January 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Honestly, Rod Blagojevich tired me out when he went through his second tortured cowboy analogy. Perhaps he has a point in here somewhere, but it’s buried under a slew of bad metaphors. At one point, he accuses the state legislature of pursuing impeachment as a conspiracy to … raise taxes?

Blagojevich challenged the Chicago Tribune to fight on his behalf, which is a little rich, since wiretaps have him threatening to kill a deal to sell Wrigley Field if they didn’t start writing editorials in his support.  The Tribune, which has the transcript, points out that Blagojevich seems to have missed the point of impeachment:

Blagojevich, portraying himself as the victim, said the impeachment trial rules are “a gross violation of every constitutional principle that exists.”

“If they can do this to a governor, they can do this to any citizen in Illinois.”

The impeachment trial, however, is a political procedure, not a legal one.

Well, duh.  The points he makes apply to any pending prosecution of Blagojevich by Patrick Fitzgerald.  The state legislature has plenary authority to determine the grounds for impeachment and to determine whether Blagojevich meets them.  There is no “presumption of innocence” in an impeachment trial, nor would calling John McCain and Kathleen Sebelius as witnesses about his prescription-drug reimportation effort mean anything to the legislature.

He’s not being removed for incompetence, he’s being removed because the feds have wiretaps of Blagojevich discussing the sale of Illinois’ open Senate seat.  And that’s clearly a political problem for Illinois state government and a reasonable issue for impeachment.

You have to love Blagojevich’s new spin, though, about how this is a political hit job because he’s so tough on taxes.  As some old cowboys would say, “That dog won’t hunt, pardner.”  Time for Blagojevich to mosey off into the sunset.

Update: Rod Blagojevich, Tax Martyr?  Er, hardly.  The Tax Foundation opposed Blago on a $7 billion increase in business taxes in 2007:

Governor Blagojevich’s proposal to increase tax revenues by at least $7.1 billion through two new business taxes would give Illinois taxpayers one of the highest tax burdens in the nation. Indeed, if the Governor’s plan had already been fully implemented this year, Illinois taxpayers would be paying the 9th highest tax burden instead of the 22nd highest. …

Governor Blagojevich’s FY 2008 budget plan would raise this $7.1 billion in new revenue by enacting new business taxes on gross receipts and payroll. The gross receipts tax would raise the bulk of the revenue with a large, hidden tax on all businesses that would exceed any tax increase passed by any state this decade.

Why, that lily-livered, no-good, lyin’ varmint!

Impeach me!!!

……And in other news, on Sunday, disgraced mayor Blago was found floating in the Chicago river. Sources say that he died of natural causes. His feet grew cement.

HornetSting on January 23, 2009 at 5:23 PM

A while ago I said that if the democrats in Illinois couldn’t get Blagojevich to resign before Obama’s coronation he was going to go down fighting and take as many of them with him as possible.

Blagojevich is no more or no less of a crook than most of the rest of the democratic machine in Illinois. He is going to tell everyone where the skeletons are at hoping that Obama will promise him a pardon to shut him up.

DJ Rick on January 23, 2009 at 5:24 PM

Blago tried to pass a massive tax increase in 2007, some sort of gross receipts tax, which got massively defeated in the House. I think more people voted against his impeachment than voted for his ridiculous tax scheme.

Illinidiva on January 23, 2009 at 5:24 PM

So the Illinois constitution provides for the impeachment of every citizen of that state? Could the Ill. Legislature impeach Dear Leader?

rbj on January 23, 2009 at 5:26 PM

can I just fantacize that he has something really juicy on the ONE and as he rides off in the sunset he takes Barry with him……PLEASE!

SDarchitect on January 23, 2009 at 5:26 PM

I do not think this is a hit job because he is tough on taxes, though, he has held tough on not raising the income and sales tax in Illinois. Trying to implement a Gross Receipts Tax…another story.

I will NOT be surprised once the Governor impeached that the legislature will try to raise the income tax. They have tried the last couple years and Blago has been in the way. Raising taxes now will provide political points to Blago and the current Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn said today that he will not commit to not raising sales and incomes taxes.

The thing is that you just have to listen to what Blagojevich is saying to see that the guy has completely lost any grip he may have had on reality as you and I perceive it. He is now drawing comparisons between his misdeeds and the bombing of Pearl Harbor and Wild West lynching’s.

It has now gotten to the place where there is no longer any humor watching this guy literally unravel before your eyes.

This is why I seriously hope the Illinois Senate will convene impeachment proceedings on Monday morning and then vote to impeach Blagojevich out of office by Monday afternoon.

People in Illinois are now sick of this guy!

pilamaye on January 23, 2009 at 5:33 PM

Hey! Who wants to see Blagojevich sign a girl’s boob? Don’t worry, it’s SFW.

Rockstar governor!

I think I see a pattern here……………

………. when Mr. Obama is starting to have a bad day, he calls up Blagojevich and tells him to get in front of the cameras.

Yeap……………. the ‘Chicago Way’, it’s all a machine, and it’s going to be a long four years.

Seven Percent Solution on January 23, 2009 at 5:40 PM

o/t sort of. Did you all read about the mayor of Racine, Wis. resigning? The only reason I mention it was that the AP played another round of Name that Party with the story.

Cindy Munford on January 23, 2009 at 5:41 PM

More, please. His plane is in a stall and not responding to the controls. Rod, this will be your last opportunity to take out your oppressors when the cameras are rolling. Man up and make it happen. You know you never liked Rahm anyway,..he’s going to make big bucks, get plenty of face time, and has a bright future. You’ll be working by the hour in a car wash. It isn’t fair. You know it, your wife knows it, we all know it. Do the right thing.

As a Chicago resident I am sick of this guy but I wouldn’t mind it so much if he decided to tell a few tales on his way out. The threat of prison is a great motivator.

sherry on January 23, 2009 at 5:47 PM

He has kind of grown on me.

Let’s keep him around a bit longer.

What?

Oh, of course not.

I would never live in Illinois.

Blago is the quintessential corrupt political scum.

This is gonna make a good movie someday…

JetBoy on January 23, 2009 at 5:57 PM

Perhaps he has a point in here somewhere, but it’s buried under a slew of bad metaphors.

Bad metaphors and poetry recitals. Down deep Blago is a frustrated English teacher.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!

Edward Genson, the lead attorney for Gov. Rod Blagojevich, said he intends to withdraw as the governor’s lawyer in the criminal case.

Genson, who has been practicing law for 44 years, made a brief statement to reporters after a hearing this afternoon in federal court.

“I never require a client to do what I say,” he said. “But I do require them to at least listen.”

You can draw your own conclusions as to what happened. But I think Genson realized he not only had a loose cannon for a client, but a certified loon as well, and he is cutting and running.

pilamaye on January 23, 2009 at 6:24 PM

Loon or not… this impeachment is interesting…

Apparently he can’t question evidence, can’t bring witnesses, and his accusers allegations are taken as fact, without having to provide proof…

As he has yet to even be indicted, let alone convicted by anyone except the press… I can see his point.

I still think this guy is a crook, but in a Republic, its the rule of law that is supreme, not public opinion…

But then… this kinda goes to show, we do not live in a Republic any longer doesn’t it…

Romeo13 on January 23, 2009 at 6:37 PM

The caller is right. Blago is scapegoat to protect the One. There can be no trial.

I had to laugh when Blago said he had done “mostly what was right for Illinois”.

Sue on January 23, 2009 at 7:33 PM

I could only take so much of listening to this guy. After about 3 minutes I wanted to poke my eyes out. Man is he long winded!

NathanG on January 23, 2009 at 8:35 PM

This halfwit reprobate makes Elliot Spitzer look good.

FlatFoot on January 24, 2009 at 12:56 AM

This is MY GUY! Keep him in office FOREVER! He has not been convicted of anything and he is a wonderful example of a democratic pol for the folks to watch. Also, he is a pal of The Most High Obama, May He Live Forever!

sabbott on January 24, 2009 at 6:30 AM

Hey, it’s time to quit bashing poor Blagojevich. Let’s talk about some of his good points instead!

-Did you know that he takes a shower almost every day?
-He can do his hair in less than two hours.
-He often wears deodorant.
-He washes his hands after peeing more than 50% of the time.

I’m just saying that we shouldn’t only look at his corrupt side. We should see the whole man for what he is. And he’s got pretty good bathroom etiquette. Kudos for Blagojevich.

This is getting entertaining. Need more popcorn

LOL. His lawyer just quit. How much longer before the men in white coats come with a straight-jacket?
